We once went with no power for 4 days, it was sure stressing the first day because it came unexpectedly (it was a dust storm or something, I live in Monterrey, México), dealing with the food in the fridge... we put it in coolers and kept plenty of ice but since it was unexpected and power was very slow to come back (lots of damage) there were the trips to many places to find more ice.

But we survived pretty much the same and ate the same as well, except maybe more fruit, I don't know how they hook up stoves over there... mine has an electric 'starter' but its still connected to the gas, so even if the starter thing doesn't click and turn the plate on, the flame from a kitchen (long neck) lighter would do.

Have you seen that Simpsons episode when Marge hires a nutriologist and puts Homer on a diet?, they tell him if he wants to snack on something he should bite on a sweet pepper, it's hilarious how he keeps biting on them and stating how delicious they are, Moe even blends some to make him a drink!... although I don't really remember how the rest of the episode went!

Well my point is! that I've managed to control my cravings and I guess after almost 7 months of eating differently... I actually crave different things, case in point are baby carrots and yambean with lime, I'm not saying you should start biting on sweet peppers every time you want some chocolate (I've wanted chocolate myself and often go for the snack sized versions, but you already know thats an option), but I've constantly shared how "I feel like having some grapes" or "have you seen all the different kinds of apples?, I want to taste that kind" and slowly but surely my friends and relatives are getting with the program...

It sure took a while, though, but now I get granny apples as "tokens of appreciation" instead of hershey's cookies and cream. Just the other day while visiting a friend she was very excited to show me how she found splenda granulated to cook me an apple pie with, it was delicious by the way... although I had a small slice, hehe.

In Mexico we eat tuna salad with avocado all the time, its kind of its perfect companion. It doesn't have to be guacamole... by the way, if you just mash the avocado a little without adding anything but perhaps a bit of crushed black pepper.

I have a friend who chops tomato, sweet peppers, and celery and cooks them then adds the can of tuna, yeah! she heats it up too!. Then blends the leftover tomato and pepper (cooked in moist heat but not with the tuna) to top it with salsa, it's pretty good!, avocado here would be a side though... and make sure you get some crackers! (preferably rectangular, if you ask me).

I agree with a_mckh, Nature's Own light bread (40kcal per slice) is really good, the options I have over here in Mexico aren't many, I should say, but HEB carries Nature's Own Light Wheat and also Light Sourdough (white bread that my 16 year old sandwich lover brother doesn't pass on), there is also a Bake Shop brand from HEB itself that makes every variety with 45 calories or less per slice.

I don't think she's trying to sabotage you, unless there's something in the way she speaks to you that might seem like she has any intention of being "mean".

I felt the need to post a reply because this has happened to me before, quite often actually, with my aunts specially, sometimes I feel it's a bit of "female envy" but I do realize it's a lot more of just, you know, plain niceness and concern.

I mention concern because I don't know what body type you are, but I am... I think... a pear, so I started losing weight and looking different from the waist up, including my face, so it's more noticable and sometimes they complain I'm "wasting away", little do they know I still have about 40lbs to lose... I'm 5'5 and 187lbs right now, but I started at 260lbs, so I guess the difference is "too much" and they think I'm sick or something...

oh! and about the kit kats!, I'd advice giving them away right now!, get rid of the chocolate and make some friends all in one move :P

Foods Best food to eat at McDonalds? Jul 31 2008

I don't live in the US, so I'm sure you have better options (I heard of a McVeggie burger on whole wheat), but last time I was kindly forced to eat at McDonald's I had a grilled chicken salad, skipped on the croutons... had a lite vinaigrette dressing which I only used half of (not because it was too high on calories but because it just wasn't necessary).

For drink I went with a small, supposedly sugar free, lemonade.

Needless to say, your uncle will probably still make fun of you for ordering a salad... so be ready for that!

Weight Loss Lost 60lbs in 4 months, not proud but amazed. How I did it Jul 13 2008
23:55 (UTC)

Hey, woah! now that's some crazy four months!... I've been on my own "mission" for four months and a half now, so I think I can relate... I was 266lbs when I started in March and now I'm exactly 60lbs lighter!, I've had some minor setbacks mostly from health concerns (I mean: feeling like crap), I see my nutritionist/psychologist (yes! what a slash!) every two weeks. Two months in I had to take some blood tests, but I'm all clear now... the whole issue was that since losing my (huge) appetite I started being a tad careless about nutrition and often thought "bah, I'm not hungry", left home without eating properly and returned a weakass (excuse my language, but that's how I felt, it was pretty bad, I now leave with an "emergency apple" every time).

Anyway, I agree with mrsdangle, getting smart with the grocery list is where it's at, I'm 23 years old, definitely not married nor with children but I live with my parents and siblings, lately I make the list or go to the supermarket myself and so far they haven't complained, we've succesfully changed to skim milk, nonfat yogurt and cheese, from frosted flakes to corn flakes or all bran flakes, pork ham to turkey ham... regular bread to bake shop light wheat bread, became addicted to apples (do you know how many kinds there are?! it's amazing!) bananas, grapes, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach and peas, among other things. Sometimes it feels like the twilight zone to open the fridge and actually see radishes, zucchini, celery, jicama (yambean), lots of water bottles, sugar-free juices, and... like my brother said "there's more than one kind of lettuce?", there's some bizarre (and pretty) ziploc container arrangement there.

I must admit though that I do feel a little crazy at times when I'm looking very closely at nutrition information on labels, but what the heck... it sure has paid off so far, so has learning to use this site, so here's to losing 60lbs more! (or something).

Young Calorie Counters Not eating enough...anyone else having the same problem? Jul 07 2008

What happens to me more often is that I feel I'm horribly miscalculating... specially after I've had lunch and I'm feeling specially full and satisfied, I feel guilty and like I've eaten "too much", even if after logging it doesn't seem like a lot... that guilty feeling does not leave my head and I end up having less for dinner than I should.

I'm not sure if I'm making mistakes at calculating and somehow I'd rather be 300 below than 300 above, although more often than not I do try to narrow the deficit with fruits and almonds. I'm trying to "fix" this though, by only logging every other day and giving my mind a break!

Still I get a tad obsessive-compulsive... I doubt my counting abilities, I guess.

Fitness Anyone try the Wii Fit yet? Jun 02 2008

Well, a VLCD is a "very low calorie diet", I started three months ago with 800 calories a day, I see my doctor every two weeks, the weight loss was massive for this first three months (about 20 kilos, 44 pounds). Lately I do between 900-1000 calories a day, I should mention that my level of activity is pretty null... and if it wasn't for the Fit I wouldn't get to moving, or actually sweating, that much.

I'm 5'5 and down from 266 to 222 lbs (120.8 kilos to 101, I think in kilos over here!). Often I fear I'm stuck, and my doctor assures me my "body type" doesn't require more than another 25 kilos loss or so... I'm not sure if that puts my BMI in a healthy range (probably not), but I've been told I shouldn't trust that thing too much.

Weight Loss I Refuse to..... Jun 02 2008

You're not using the Balance Board on a carpet, are you?, I've heard that affects the measurement. Anyway... I've also found the number the Wii Fit gives me is closer or equal to what I get at my doctor's office (his scale is a bit of a more sofisticated balance board actually), you should experiment hitting the + button to repeat it all and weigh yourself again on the same moment with the Fit, I've found it can fluctuate at least 300 grams depending on your posture.

Oh and I also refuse to use my dad's "chic" scale (made of glass or something), it depresses me every time!

I've used it everyday for the last week and had a lot of fun with it, my sister and brother also got their Mii into it (I'm the only one who bloated, by the way!) so it's challenging seeing how we do and trying to do better, beat each other's scores. I've already unlocked every aerobic and balance game and I'm working my way with the yoga, I do an hour a day at least but of course the Wii counts it as 30 minutes, what I find exciting is that I can finally do some excercises for 10 minutes non-stop... that's what gets me going, specially the boxing and footing.

On the other hand, I was off it yesterday and probably today too, I haven't gotten my period and I feel terribly uncomfortable, oh!... I should say after the first few days of some tonification/yoga combinations (that it suggested) I did get mildly sore but nothing to worry about, I find it exciting. I should probably mention I'm on a VLCD diet too, I've lost at least 3 pounds in the past week and a half without straining myself.
