Weight Loss Having Trouble Getting Calories Nov 13 2009

Have you tried eating smaller meals every two hours or so? If possible, give it a try. It works great for me because I love to eat, but if you are eatingmore times it may help you get more calories. As for things to eat, these are mine:

  • I do a lot of strength training, so protein shakes are a staple in my diet. I mix the powder with water, but if you want to give it a shot you could get some more calories by mixing with milk.
  • Clif Bars-fairly small but very tasty and fairly nutritionally sound as well
  • Cashews
  • Ricotta cheese mixed with berries
  • Plain yogurt, cottage cheese, and berries all mixed together
  • Tuna fish with apples and walnuts mixed in (I don't add mayo, but you could if you need the calories)
  • Peanut butter spread on a piece of multigrain bread
  • Greek yogurt with some granola stirred in (so yummy, so much protein)

Hope that helps some! Remember to FEED your body to stay healthy and lose weight! Be good to yourself!

Weight Loss Increase calories by how much? Apr 02 2009

I am also a college student and I just turned 21. I'm 5'3" and I was eating around 1400 calories for months and losing very slowly. I started at 137 and as of the end of February I finally hit 119. Then I upped my calories to 1600 and I quicly started losing, now I'm down to 112.8 as of this morning. I'd say up your cals!

I say take a couple days off of exercise and have a day where you eat maintenance calories. I was losing extremely slowly for MONTHS and I took a week off of exercise because i got a concussion and I started losing like crazy. Plus, if you're working out hard EVERY DAY you're more prone to injury. Everyone's body needs a rest once in awhile, even if your brain thinks otherwise. I am also 5'3" and started at 137lbs, I am now at 113.6lbs.

Good luck!

I'm not sure if this is reasonable for you, but how about slowly increasing your calories without stepping on the scale? That might take some of the pressure off since it is likely you will gain a bit of water weight in the process. It's possible you won't, though. I increased from 1400cals to 1600 all in one go and didn't gain an ounce. You've been severely restricting so it may be different for you.

I know you probably know this, but you may need to increase beyond 1200. That is a good first goal to get to though. I know that you know the BARE minimum is 1200 and I'm not trying to lecture you, just prepare you for getting beyond that number in the future.

Weight Loss isn't fiber supposed to HELP you poo? (sorry for the excess of info) Mar 27 2009

I have a couple of things to add.

First, my mother complained of the same thing when she started eating FiberOne bars. She said it backed her up, so I asked her what color her pee was. When she responded that it was yellow and always had been, I informed her that she probably wasn't drinking enough water in general and in particular for the increase in fiber.

I also agree that you should try to get fiber from other sources. I used to eat FiberOne bars, but I didn't like that they had so many artificial ingredients so I just started eating more fresh fruits and veggies, and now I get more than my fair share of fiber.

And lastly, I believe a FiberOne bar has only 9g of fiber. Adding that to your original 5g you only get 14g in a day, which still isn't really enough. I would suggest (slowly) incorporating more fiber through fresh fruits, veggies, and beans and increase your water intake with it!

Weight Loss Does dieting make you miserable? Mar 26 2009

I agree with santonacci. I actually enjoy healthy foods though, so this lifestyle is great for me. If you like fast food, greasy food, chocolate, whatever then eat it! It may not be as nourishing for your body but it'll keep you sane. Just make sure you practice portion control and count the calories going in. I wouldn't advise constructing your diet out of these foods entirely, but in order to stick to what you're doing you need to make it work for you.

To add to that, calling it a "diet" makes it seem like you don't think of it as a lifelong committment, which could leave you yo-yoing. If you plan on going back to old habits as soon as you reach your goal, you'll surely gain your weight back!! So make certain whatever "diet" you're doing you can stick to for life. If that includes unhealthy foods, then that's okay! Make it work for you. It's all about balance.

Also, maybe your body is telling you to eat! At 116lbs you are very close to being underweight, and you're only 15 so if you are using CC's tools to figure out your intake you are probably severely underestimating. Teenage girls are still growing and need more calories than adult girls do!! I would check your intake because if you are eating as much as you say you are, maybe you are trying to restrict too much!

Weight Loss Do you eat when you're not hungry? Mar 26 2009

I eat every two hours. Even if I am not physically hungry, my brain always wants food!!! I never eat enough to be stuffed, and I look forward to the times I eat so it keeps me sane. So yes, I do eat when I'm not necessarily hungry, but I'm not forcing myself, I want to. I just love all the (healthy) food I eat, I suppose!

Weight Loss So confused... Mar 26 2009

You can try getting more calories in during the day by spreading your food out. You say you have a hard time getting in 300 calories each time you eat, so why don't you try eating about 200 calories 5 times a day instead? I eat every two hours during the day, then I finish up my calories at dinnertime. It helps keep me sane by not letting me go too long before I eat (there's something satisfying about eating even if I'm not necessarily hungry), and I can fit in all of my calories and have time to digest and not feel full before bed.

I also agree with the above posters in thinking you need low-bulk, high-calorie foods. Salad greens don't have many calories, but bread and peanut butter do. Even some fruits might get you less bulk for your calories. Things like nuts and avocadoes have a lot of calories but also good fats and protein. You'd be doing your body a favor by adding them to your diet!

I think you should give upping your calories another shot. If you gained on 1400, provided it was real weight and not just water weight (which might not be the case), you've probably done some metabolic damage. When you're done losing your weight, you don't want to be maintaining on 1300 calories a day, right? I'd give yourself a bit of time to repair your metabolism. You'll be happier and it will make it easier to lose the weight you want to.

The Lounge never... Jan 29 2009

I am a college student, and last spring I moved off campus into an apartment with a kitchn and roommates who LOVE to eat. I knew I needed to control myself but I couldn't. Toward the end of the semester I found myself ordering entire calzones when no one else was home, then filling up a bowl of cereal five or six times. I would call my mom in tears nearly daily. When I came home, I was ashamed of how I looked. To help me feel better my mom took me to the store and I picked out some healthy food, then I had to forbid myself from eating junk. I had to literally tell myself it was not allowed, not even an option, or else I would eat all of it. That was in June, and I'm npw 5lbs away from my original weight. I go to the gym every day now and I tell myself daily that I do not want to go back to where I was. I was miserable. I was antisocial all summer long and all of last semester because I felt like a cow. Even at the end of last semester I wore the baggiest clothes I had, and I was miserable. You can do it. For me, not giving myself an option worked. It gets better, I promise. Just nip it in the bud now before it gets worse!

Fitness Weights and Cardio counter productive? Dec 11 2008

Essentially, your body will use anything it can for feul before it turns to burning fat for energy. It's a basic evolutionary survival instinct. Your body will eat its own muscle before fat so that in an extreme, near-death case it will have something with which to sustain itself. Hopefully none of us here are at the point where we are eating no food at all, but if we were to do so your body fat percentage would probably shoot up as a result of lean body mass loss. In theory, when providing your body with less feul than it needs to survive (e.g. a calorie deficit), some lean body mass will be lost. You could lose muscle doing nothing, lose muscle doing cardio, lose muscle resistance training. I feel like often those engaging in resistance training have researched pre and postworkout nutrition to optimize fat loss and minimze lean body mass loss, and I am of the opinion that resistance training is the best way to presevre that lean body mass while losing fat, but due to your body's basic funtioning mechanisms, lean body mass loss is nearly inevitable when in a calorie deficit no matter what you are doing for exercise.

Weight Loss The best weight loss motivation? Money Dec 11 2008
12:00 (UTC)

This is true, but I think in my case I'm motivated enough to lose this weight without the bribe of money. I'm trying as hard as I possibly can, and no one's paying me! Sure, I have cheat days once in awhile, and I sure can eat, but usually on those days my urge to eat is so strong that no amount of money in the world could stop me. I tell myself that I'll feel better if I don't, that I need to keep my eyes on the prize nothing can stop me. And my weight loss has slowed due to being close to my goal, but I'm still working as hard, if not harder, than ever.

This is not to disagree with you, though, the promise of money would sweeten the pot, and probably motivate me if I didn't already have motivation! And I sure can tell you I wouldn't be opposed to $250,000...

Weight Loss Does a weighing yourself everyday help you lose weight? Dec 08 2008
00:33 (UTC)

I like to weigh myself every day, especially now that I'm pretty close to my goal weight.  I think it helps me consciously make better eating decisions. If I think to myself "If you eat that, you won't be very happy when you step on the scale tomorrow," it sometimes gives me a bit more willpower. And if I do decide to eat mass amounts of whatever it is I told myself would make me unhappy, when I confirm by stepping on the scale it gives me something to remember for the next time! And I know a lot of that is daily water retention fluctuation, but it's a mental thing for me. And if, for instance, my boyfriend and i go to a brunch buffet and stuff our faces enough to actually gain real weight, I have a whole week or so where the scale is above my trend to say "Hey, it was your choice, now you're set back a bit!"

Weight Loss Green tea extract? Dec 07 2008
20:30 (UTC)

I COULD still take a vitamin, I just don't need to. The only reason I took one was because of a few key ingredients that were to help my trouble with my joints, as everything else I get from my diet.  So now I take fish oil which takes care of that and is cheaper! Plus I haven't decided how I feel about multivitamins and the body's ability to absorb all those vitamins at once, as well as the inability to customize them for your own needs.

I take green tea extract and fish oil simply for health benefits. If they help with weight loss too, great, but I replaced my multivitamin with them because for me it is more beneficial.

Fitness body fortress protein powder!!! Nov 30 2008
20:32 (UTC)

I've tried Body Fortress before, and I think it tastes TERRIBLE. My brother bought a big tub of it and he could barely get it down so he let me at it...I couldn't do it either.  But the other thing I would check is the quality. I don't have a tub handy so I can't check the ingredients but look to see what the first ingredient on the list is.  If it says something to the effect of "proprietary protein complex" I would shy away...that essentially means that there is a very small amount of the advertised protein type in the mix, combined with some other cheaper proteins. By calling it a protein complex they can put the ingredient of interest at the top of the list, while normally it would be close to the bottom.

I actually have a pair of pants that stopped fitting after I gained weight last semester.  I'm sure i could fit into them now but I refuse to try them on until I'm closer to my goal.  I've been wearing too-big jeans, T-shirts, and sweatshirts instead of the wardrobe of super-cute clothes that I have, postponing until I get there! it sounds silly buy I think it keeps me motivated.  I do regret my summer a tiny bit though, I came home weighing about 20lbs more than when I left and I felt GROSS! I cried to my mom on more than one occasion! (Luckily she's amazing and understanding) I didn't go out for a lot of the summer, partially because I didn't want to be in pictures, partially because i didn't want people to judge me for gaining back the weight I'd lost when I first went to college, and partially because i didn't want the temptation to ruin my diet.  I missed out on some fun things, but I also felt a bit excused since I worked 70-hour weeks and wasn't technically lying when I said I was tired or I was at work!

Also, in my search for a good whey I discovered trueprotein, and have become a very active customer and advocate! I love the guys over there! They're super helpful and you can find anything you need! I asked for a discount code in case you ladies wanted to look into it.  Flavors and quality is excellent! It can be a bit confusing since they offer so much, but they are extremely knowledgeable and I've educated myself so you can ask me any questions! the code is KYN741, and it helps get me points for free protein too!Tongue out But seriosuly, this stuff is awesome!

I have a specially formulated pre-WO protein that's meant to be taken on an empty stomach! I work out at 5:45 every other morning to make it to class by nine, and it works out great!  I have a different shake immediately post-WO, then yet another before heading off to class.  Itmakes things easy...add water and shake!
