Health & Support hypothyroid -- diagnosed at an early age Nov 06 2008

hey

i was diagnosed at 11 but it was a fluke. my family doc was just one of those awesome thorough kinds that did a big round of tests on my blood.  i was actually extremely hyper and not displaying any of the typical symptoms except for cold intolerance and we lived in TEXAS. at first, my mom thought she got the wrong daughter.

only with a lot of activity was i able to shed off the pounds.  i am still a little more heavyset than the average girl, but being a bit plump runs in the family too.  it is really important though to keep her TSH levels in check (i go every 6 months(.  i've changed my dosage a couple of times since i was diagnosed.  and just because her levels are in the "normal" range does not mean she will feel "right."  i was in the normal range a couple years ago and they ended up upping my dosage cause i was feeling very lethargic.  so now i'm in the upper "average" range.  people are all different and they don't call it an average for nothing.  make sure ot ask how your daughter feels if she needs to go on medication.

if you have any other questions, feel free to ask. i gotsta bounce.

prettymess: FOOD COMAS!  i know exactly what you mean.  i used to pass out all the time after eating out. especially with the rents.  we're all big eaters... haha. and when we're together it's like some sort of hive mind surivival of the chubbiest.  a mindset i'm trying hard to get out of...but 21 years of training are hard to break.  i feel you on the recovery thing though.  i have this bronchial spasm thing i'm trying to get over, which makes it hard for me to work out, especially in the heat--at least that is what i tell myself when i get winded... Tongue out

randomlife: good luck with the working out!  i totally feel you on the slipping this past weekend though.  at least you were on vacation!  i was just home with the rents and, yeah, they don't like to hear no.  they give me the sad face for why i'm not eating the food they make me (lovely carb food of course --> CHINESE!!!) so i eat it...  but i'm sure you'll work it off in no time!  i unfortunately haven't been able to get off my bum since friday!  i've already lost my drive and it was less than a week!!! i just choose to nap instead of working out...

any suggestions?

mor: vampire romance novels are the best! i've never heard of the ones that randomlife and prettymess suggested, but i used to crave laurell k. hamilton's novels.  well, before they became hard core orgy books.  it's hard to respect the main character when she's basically screwing all the males (conveniently blamed on a twisted vampire-bonding side effect...) multiple times a day and sometimes in multiples...  but the books were addictive until #9 or so. lemme know how the skinny chicks book turns out!

haha and has anyone stepped onto a Wii fit lately and had a VIDEO GAME tell you you're overweight?  because i have. it's sad... Cry

mor: haha thanks!  i've got a life time of experience! Wink oh and i was wondering if you could help me calculate how many calories i have to burn via exercise per day outside of what i burn just living (lol) to reach my goal (around 2lbs/week)?  according to caloriecount i burn 2000 on a typical day and i need to eat 1230 calories. so yeah. help? i was never good at math...

randomlife: your welcome! lemme know how you like 'em!

hey randomlife!  good job on the boston trip! great way to be creative to maintain your goal and still have fun with your friends!

yeah, china town will be tricky.  there are lots of carbs in the cuisine.  so the best bet would be to get steamed fish for the main course, but watch out for what time of sauce it comes in.  soy sauce, garlic, ginger, and vegetable oil type sauces should be ok, but when it comes down to sweat and sour or fancy, thicker sauces, i would be careful.  also, chinese restraurants can tend to be a little salt heavy, even with their vegetables, so you could ask the waiter if they could go easy on the salt.  watercress and bokchoy tend to have simpler preparations that may help with limiting unnecessary calories while still being very yummy.  also, i'd be careful with the tofu.  just because its tofu doesn't mean it doesn't come packing with a lot of hot oil and its probably fried (steamed is best).

best way to get some delish chinese food i would recommend is make a compromise with the dumplings (the soup dumplings rock!) and the more 'healthier' dishes by going family style with friends, so you're eating less automatically.  also, filling your bowl or plate with what you're going to eat in that round before eating will help keep track of the servings.  i know i tend to just shovel it in from this dish or that dish without knowing that i've probably had four servings of this and another four of that.

oh and there should be plenty of fruit vendors around (LOVE asian pears!) if you need something to take the edge off right before you eat so you don't just go crazy when all that yummy steamy food arrives at the table.

hope that helps!

hey all!

i'm new to caloriecount like fifteen minutes ago! i'm 5'4 and 154lbs ("slightly overweight" according to caloriecount.com) and over the past three years i've gained 30lbs! (damn college Yell) but i'm still not to the weight i was senior year in high school. it was then when i started monitoring my food intake so i wouldn't negate the exercise i got from sports. in total, over the course of my senior year in high school i dropped from 169 to 125lbs! i would like to make a similar transformation now although its harder since i have a job 10hrs a day/5 days a week and no coach or teammates to push me to get off my bum after work.

my target weight is 135lbs (i.e. lose ~20lbs) by late august.
please help me! i wanna look good for my last year at uni!
