Foods Froot Loops are healthy? :| Sep 08 2009

I agree that Froot Loops as well as egg McMufins and doughnuts are not "real food" I'm just saying that Froot Loops are not that nutritionally bad for you. Egg McMuffins contain 12 grams of fat (nearly half is saturated) and contain 87% of your daily intake of cholesterol. Froot loops don't contain any cholesterol at all, and don't even have a gram of saturated fat. Bottom line Eating a bowl of fruit loops for breakfast is obviously not the best option, however eating a bowl everyday IS NOT going to make you fat, eating Egg McMuffins or doughnuts everyday probably will.

Personally I eat reduced sugar Froot Loops as a snack on occasion when I want something sweet because it's better than eating cookies or brownies, but for breakfast I always eat yogurt with raisins and unsweetened bran flakes.

I think that you are being way to hard on fruit loops. They do have 12 grams of sugar per serving, but they are also low in calories, extremly low in fat, have some fiber and of course are fortified with lron, folic acid and vitamin b12 (all common vitamins for children to be deficiant of) although I would prefer my children to eat oatmeal and fruit for breakfast, fruit loops with skim milk is a MUCH better option than doughnuts, or fast food breakfast which have no nutritional value at all and are LOADED with calories and saturated fat or for them to go without breakfast at all.

Foods Chia Seeds... Aug 01 2009

oh the magical Chia seed....

I'm a nutrtion major at the University of Minnesota and the Chia seed has been quite the hot topic since it was first intorduced. It supposidly slows the breakdown of carbohydrates into sugar in the digestive tract. Many times it is targeted at diabetics because it can help keep blood sugar in check. It also supposidly helps you lose weight. Chia seeds are also very high in Omega-3 fatty acids which many Americans lack in their diet. I have never personally eaten a chia seed, but many of my schoolmates eat them and haven't really noticed any difference in their bodies, but you have to remember as nutrition students we already eat a pretty balanced diet. I think if you want to give them a shot you should. There is a blog called Eat, Run, Live that I read that you could check out. The girl (Jenna) who does the blogging is a healthy food enthusiast, but not an R.D. and she swears by chia seeds. Hope that helps and yes they are the same seeds used to make Chia pets haha that's silly.

I'm a college student too :) what works for me is baggies of cereal. special K blueberry is my favorite right now, but I also really like banana nut cherrios I measure out a cup put it in a bag and take it with me it's a little over 100 kcals. Hummus and veggies is also a great option I love cut up zuchinni sticks they are really low cal and hummus is about 30 kcals a tablespoon, but if you make your own you can make it without oil and it lowers the calories.  I also love cottage cheese and popcorn! I pop my own it's really low cal like 30 kcals a cup sprinkle it with garlic salt  and put it in quart size bags yum yum

hope that helps.

Foods How much Junkfood.... Mar 27 2009

It doesn't really work exactly like that. I'm a nutrition/dietics student at UMTC and my nutrition professors put it this way: you HAVE to eat the right proportion of fat, carbs and protein and forfill alll of your micronutrient (vitamin and mineral) needs. If you can fufill those needs in only 1,200 calories than you can "spend" the other 800 (or however many) any way you want. that way you won't feel deprived of the foods you like to eat and you won't "pig out" or binge as often. It's all about moderation. Eat to fill your nutritional needs and have fun with the rest. It makes life much more enjoyable and will ease some of your food stress.

p.s. I wouldn't calssfiy almonds and frozen yogurt as "junk food" you seem to eat very healthy and balanced. keep up the good work.

SALT and any other food containing an unhealthy amount of sodium pickles, sauerkraut, popcorn COATED in salt and then dipped in salsa, mustard on everything especially boca burgers. YES I HAVE A SALT ADDICTION!! haha I also use an unhealthy amount of splenda, but i can't help it I live in Minnesota and it's cold so I HAVE To drink a lot of coffee and it must contain 2 packets of splenda (per cup and I have like 10 cups a day) and a little bit of soy milk and SF vanilla syrup (which also has splenda...) yep it's bad. If they had Rehab for salt and splenda addiction i'd be first in line...
