WEEK 10 (Aug 25) - 175.5 Cant believe that it's still coming off!!! I am so glad I found this website. Just logging food and being accountable for what goes in has made a HUGE difference. I really work out less now than when I was not logging. Apparently a whole lot of calories were going in while not enough were getting burned. I really think I can get back to a size 6 by Xmas. I will probably not do another challenge but will definately keep true my caloric intake. YEAH! |

Out of town...then sick. Finally back on track! Week 8 (Aug 10th) - 178 lbs (a little early but Monday will be hectic - again) Since logging onto cal count, I have managed to get back to a size 10 (was pushing a 16) and can finally put on some of my old 8's and get them zipped 1/2 way !!! I think this site helps me be accountable for what goes into the old piehole. Final goal be at a size 8 by Christmas. |

| Fitness | Question about biking/ spinning shoes.... I could use some help... please .... | Aug 05 2008 00:48 (UTC) |

Not sure where you are located, but would recommend going to your local bike shop. Try on the various types of shoes they have and let them give you a little guidance. They can also adjust the clips so they are a little loose and easier to clip in and out. Ride like that for a month and then have them tighten them. (not sure if that idea would work with a mountain bike) I have always had a road bike but only recently became brave enough to go to clips. (always had the cages) I absolutely LOVE them. They made a world of difference in my performance. I tend to toe in but opted not to get a floating system. It makes me more aware of my body and is teaching me to correct what is wrong. Good luck in your quest. Lisa |

Original Post by ser25: LOL... looks like someone is watching infomercials. I believe they use that phase exactly. I have now done 5 days of online research. Most of the stuff online is put there by the company reaping the benefit. Everyone of the posts read so far have mentioned herbal cleanses or colonics. No one is touching the oxygen cleanse. Anyone??? Please- no .02 cents unless you know what you are talking about. I have done the 'smooth move' tea and know how it effects me- therefore, NO HERBAL CLEANSE for me. People in America that have not traveled abroad can get and do have parasites and/or tapeworms. Does everyone- of course not- but dont dismiss the notion.

Original Post by megclifton: I tried it and it is just more hype. Matter o'fact...I am the girl that has tried almost everything...hydroxycut (new & old formula), EAS supplements - creatine,... Your body gets most of the 'supplement' type fat loss products from food if you are eating correctly- you dont need that stuff. During my EAS days...(was doing the challenge) I was on a diet that the fitness competition girls go on...OMG that was crazy. Plus I was using creatine and other 'creatine' type products put out by EAS...I ended up in the hospital with a kidney stone - I thought my appendix was ready to burst and apparently the ER people were in the same mind set because I had nearly passed the stone (which was a result of the creatine & high protein diet) before they gave me medication...NEVER AGAIN. Talk about learning a lesson the hard way. |

Original Post by yessicazctcs: Here is a food suggestion- substitute cucumber slices (with skin) for chips. I like them with a little salt or use them with dip. They fill you up pretty quickly, give you a really great crunch, and better for you nutrition wise... It really saved me over the 4th weekend. If you dont like cucumbers, try another vegetable that you can slice into a 'thick chip'. |

Fat weighs less than muscle. The scale combined with a tape measure and if available a trainer than knows how to use calibers to do body fat is one of the TRUE way to measure progress. People that are training hard and eating correctly are not necessary in a 'plateau'- you could be buillding lean muscle and burning fat with no change in body weight. |

Original Post by melkor: AMEN... I went to a PT for my left knee when I 'just twisted it'. I had swelling in both knees. Basically, I was told my body type was NOT made for running. The angle from my hip to knee was off the charts. To make matters worse, my quads were really over developed as compared to muscles on the inside portion of the leg/knee thus causing even more problems. He gave me some really good exercises to strengthen this area...Most importantly, it's made me get back on my bike...forgot how much I missed cycling...Is 45 y/o to old to start traing for Tour de France??? LOL.

Those of you that put up unhappy faces next to your no weightloss post or that dropped a couple of pounds but are still unhappy because it was not enough...read on. I am sure most if not all of us have seen the show Biggest Loser. The contestants live and breathe working out and diet with other people that have the same goal AND they have a personal trainer monitoring them nearly everyday. Think back on the weight loss.... by the 3rd show, almost everyone had slowed to between 3-5 lbs. Personally, I dont live with a group of like minded people that are helping me stay on track NOR do I have a personal trainer that comes to my house (that is equipped with a personal gym) to make sure I am working out. But, if I did and I didnt lose weight...MAN WOULD I BE MAD! I am preparing myself for the scale on Monday after this weekend. I fully expect to see my 2 lbs lost last week, back again |

| Weight Loss | Ate too many calories yesterday, less today. Will this work?? | Jun 28 2008 19:09 (UTC) |

Original Post by sophiaeco: I think this hits it on the head. You really need to control what goes into your body. Chinese food typically has a lot of oil and if I had to guess- you didn't get brown rice. I just do extra cardio the next day when I overdue my food. Most importantly, dont beat yourself up over it. All of us, at one time or another, have gone over calories. |

If you have a natural foods store or your grocery has a organic or natural section- start there. I am lucky to have Publix and Whole Foods very near by. I love raw almonds. I take them with me everywhere. Also, Kashi has some really good pizza's out. The thin crust is my favorite for day's I dont want to cook. Pick some of the vegetables/fruits that you have always seen and wondered "what the heck is that". Research it online and attempt cooking it or using it in a recipe. Think of changing up your diet as an adventure to another country rather than a chore. I was a "instant dinner" kind of girl - now I love the fresh produce section!

Take this for what it is worth... I worked for an athletic club that did body fat for Nicky Taylor (her agent sent her) when she was just getting started in the modeling world. Alot of guys (trainers included) could not stop gawking. I mean, afterall she is a beautiful girl. Her results - she fell into the obese category. Alot of the staff was shocked. She had barely any lean body mass... this is not what anyone should aspire to be. Thin does not equal healthy. A healthy, strong body (both inside and out) is VERY SEXY. Lean muscle wins at any age. Just my .02

Hello to all...I also need this challenge. I will use all of you as my workout competition. I have not found a workout partner yet that will commit to MY schedule LOL... anyone in the Fort Lauderdale area??? 5'10", 45 (46 fast approaches). My ultimate goal is 170lbs by Labor Day but I'll be happy with a more realistic goal of 175lbs. To achieve this, I will have to really kick it up a notch witht the cardio and free weights.... Week 1 (June 26)- 186 |

| Weight Loss | Is 8 pm to late? | Jun 21 2008 15:11 (UTC) |

I have to say, I disagree with most of the above. Everyone is different. Late night eating got me into ALOT of trouble. If you had just come from a run or the gym and now you are eating...no big deal. You are still burning calories and will continue to burn into the night by working out later. If it is easy for you to add pounds and you are not working out on a regular basis, you are heading down the wrong path. Having said all of that....we ALL do this. When I fall back to this bad habit, the next day, I kick it up a notch on cardio and eat EXTREMELY clean. I am also 45 years old and those 'late night' habits came from my 20's and early 30's when ALL was forgiven. If I could do it all again, I would have broke from those habits then and would be 30 lbs lighter now. |

Original Post by ren01: EXCELLENT SUGGESTION! All of the above are harder than you would ever think and will not only tone but give you functional strength....add crunches for abs (core) and static squats - put your back against a wall and slide down it until your legs form a right angle-now hold. If you are a beginner or have weak quads, dont go as deep into the squat. |

Original Post by rnjt: Hi rnjt Yes, you will look different LOL... It's hard for me to explain. Google lunge walking and you will get a ton of how to's with video. For me, this is the quickest way to incredible legs. Works your glutes, quads, hamstrings and calf muscles. The first time you do them, I guarantee you will be extra sore the next day but DONT GIVE UP. Give yourself a couple days rest, then get back at it. You can do them in the gym as well with dumbbells. Power walking is different than going for a walk. Shorter, faster steps focusing on heel to toe movement. Use your arms as if you were pulling yourself forward with a rope. It is reeeaaally easy to get to 160 when you walk like that...LOL- especially if it is 90 degrees with 70% humidity. |

| Fitness | Fat back and tire solution?????? | Jun 11 2008 15:05 (UTC) |

Original Post by syleena: This is referred to as plank position. It is incorporated in pilates floor programs as well as some yoga classes. Google it and you will more than likely get photos of proper positioning. The only thing left out of above is reference to your spine (make sure you keep everything in alined) Dont let your hips sag, dont hold your breath. An excellent exercise to tone the muscles under your 'back fat' is the one armed row. (working right side) Support your left side by putting your left knee and left hand on a flat bench. Make sure your back is level (not arched). Get a dumbell in your right hand (start light and move up in weight). Bring the dumbell up level to chest and lower back down. Slow, controlled movements without twisting your torso. When doing a seated row (machine), my trainer taught me to 'pinch a penny'...which means when pulling toward your chest use slow, controlled movements then sqeeze your shoulder blades together....slowly release. Remember not to round your shoulders or back on this one either. (bonus...after doing this exercise for awhile with proper form- GREAT posture) |

Dont forget women have a thicker layer of fat over the muscle than men. Another reason women have to work extra hard and be extra anal about their diet when trying to achieve a really defined body. When you first start lifting, you tend to gain weight and look bulky. This freaks out most women and they stop lifting. If they only knew that beautiful muscle they are putting on their bodies help them in so many ways as they get older. Help burn fat and bone density to name a few. |

| Weight Loss | How do you curb that hungry feeling? | Jun 09 2008 15:08 (UTC) |

I found that chewing gum helps. Also replaced any sugar/honey with raw agave. It releases into your system slowly so no sugar crash or hunger pangs. |

| Weight Loss | low weight and weight loss | Jun 09 2008 14:53 (UTC) |
|
The only way to acheive fat loss when your are at that weight/height is to start weight training. Since muscle weighs more than fat, you will more than likely not lose weight. Dont freak out when you gain a little weight (that's usually what happens), just keep at it. The more muscle you have on your body the more fat you will burn. I would recommend lower weight with higher reps. If you have never weight trained before, get help from one of the personal trainers. If you hurt yourself at the gate, chances of you finishing your race are diminished. Cross training can also help. Mix it up- your body will get accustom to your workout- so you tend to burn less. |

| Weight Loss | Sugar fiend! | Jun 05 2008 19:03 (UTC) |

First, dont drink alcohol. I dont care what kind it is, if you are a sugaraholic you will crave sugar. Second, when you are craving sweets, you may actually be craving fat. Try eating small pieces of your favorite cheese. Third, try not to eat after 5pm- if you do- NO CARBS unless they are fiberous (ie broccoli, etc) I have found a sweetner (all natural) called Agave nectar. It is fantastic. It has a very low glycemic index so your body absorbs it slowly. Since I love a glass of wine at night, (sabotage for my diet) I came up with a solution. I use lime juice (fresh squeezed or juiced) and ginger root juice (you can use a garlic press to squeeze the juice which is a workout on its own or juicer) about 1/4 cup to a gallon of spring water. Use Agave to sweeten. I am 5' 10 and just weighed in at 180(lost 12 lbs in 3weeks). My ideal weight is 160lbs. I have a muscular build and a 1500 cal diet never worked for me. I am currently taking in between 1100 and 1200 per day. I have to be extremely anal about counting and weigh myself each morning to make sure I am not gaining. Are you sure that your calories going in are less than what you burn in a day? Good Luck. |

Yoga and pilates tend to lengthen muscles and while toning-you might try this. Think about the exercises your are doing now. If you have a job that has you on your feet most of the day- that could be contributing. If you have always had big calves or most members of your family have big calves, you may have to embrace them. |
