Health & Support Feeling bloated, anyone? Sep 25 2009

i wonder if this is the cause of some of my insane bloat issues. i drink like 2 cups of water per day, but i can't seem to make myself drink more. i'm never thirsty and after a glass of water i feel so full. any tips on getting my water in?

did you post other links? :0

thank you for the site, i'll take a look. and my intention is to get in the habit of structured eating. the only thing i worry about is if i have a meal plan, i'll feel like i'm restricting again, like i was when i set for myself certain specific times to eat, what to eat, etc. and that i'll binge. does that make sense? i want to try making a meal plan for myself though, but i can't really seem to come up with one that satisfies me (i've tried dozens of times). i guess the problem is that i only crave carbs and sweets. any ideas on how to break free of this habit without feeling like i'm depriving myself?

but like i said, i'm not trying to diet. i'm trying to eat healthily, normally. sweets in moderation, etc. i don't restrict any more. in the past few weeks i have found that stopping purging helped to stop the binging (to an extent). the problem isn't JUST binging though. it's the fact that i ONLY eat sweets and carbs, irregular portions, and i can't seem to get myself to break this habit. i want to lose weight by becoming a healthy eater, not by dieting (just to sum up my long original post). basically, i feel that i could lose weight if i just eat normally. right now i'm overeating, causing the weight gain.

thank you for the link. i have thought about intuitive eating often, but the problem lies within my poor digestion. i am NEVER truly hungry except in the morning when i wake up. all of my eating comes from mental hunger, cravings. this is probably because food lays in my stomach for so long that i'm always full and never hungry. i wish i had hunger cues to guide me in eating intuitively, rather than cravings that come from various emotions, or sometimes from nothing at all. but if you don't mind i'd like to have a look at some of the links. thanks!

edit: ah, the link doesn't work, it looks like the domain name is up for grabs

i've been trying to get ahold of my nutritionist but she's not responding to me. i wish i could talk to her but i don't know where she is. i've tried to have my parents get ahold of other nutritionists as well but no such luck.

and well, i'm almost overweight. i would just like to lose until i'm like 115 lbs. i don't think that i will try to starve myself again, i've battled this over in my head so many times and i think i'm done with that. i really would like the satisfaction of losing weight healthily. i'm not saying that i want to be at that very low weight again, but i don't like teetering on the high end of healthy. and the B/Ping is getting better thankfully, i'm slowly making myself get over it..

i think you misunderstand, i'm not underweight, i'm 120 lbs and 5'2". i have enough real fat, the thing is does my body need even more..?

at this point i'm binging and purging every day, sometimes multiple times a day--i just need out but i'm so petrified that i've screwed myself up so much that even at this healthy weight, my body will continue to store lots of fat. i don't care if i gain a pound or five of water weight.

as for exercise i exercise daily, but i've been doing the same things for almost a year so.. i guess i need to mix it up but i'm having trouble figuring a routine out as well lol.

it gives me confidence to hear that you've recovered well though, hopefully i can do the same soon as soon as i'm done with this stupid battling myself deciding whether or not to do this. it's like, i WANT to get better, but at the same time i'm petrified of the fact that i don't know exactly what will happen.

oh, i don't weigh myself anymore primarly for that reason (last time was at the doctor's). i know i'll gain a LOT of water weight and frankly i'm too scared to weigh myself. i can accept that water weight, but like i said i'm really scared about REAL weight gain.. do you think my body will still try to put on weight even though i'm not underweight? urghhdkjdajash

lol i'm so torn right now. thanks so much for the reply though, i need all of the motivation i can get.

also, can anyone share from experience how long it may take (generally) for my metabolism to speed up after i increase my calories and stop throwing up? i did a little searching and i'm a little scared because although i'm at a healthy weight, there have been some reports of people becoming overweight after recovery even though they eat right and exercise plenty. has this happened to anyone..? i don't want to worry about losing weight atm but i definitely don't want to gain (i mean i don't want to gain REAL weight, i am expecting water weight)

hey, thanks so much for the suggestions--they sound really good (except for the salmon, can't stand fish so i'd have chicken instead haha), BUT really costly. lol, our family is kind of short on money right now.. and i'm still trying to get a job.. do you have any money-saving tips to recommend? :p

but yeah, i'm not afraid of gaining weight in recovery.. i know that if i keep going like this i'll gain weight anyway. i feel confident that if i start eating normally i should maintain or maybe even lose a little weight. but what i'm really afraid of is being full, weird as it sounds. there are a lot of reasons, like the fact that being full is what triggers my urge to throw up, i can't do activities while bloated, and i have GERD.. all really inhibit my ability to live a normal life. it really sucks but i want to get rid of this horrible cycle. i know i'm just going to end up gaining all the weight back that i lost via starvation unless i put a stop to this 2 year long horror story really soon.

but thanks a lot, i'm going to try to get an appt. made with my doctor as soon as i can, maybe a nutritionist too.

thanks for the links.

although *all* 10 pounds may not have been fat a lot of it MUST have been, because people were commenting on how i looked less thin and that my legs looked thicker. i also was measuring myself and gained about 2 inches around my waist..

with water weight gain, will there always be bloating?

I never meant to imply that you were obese.  I suspect you're on the opposite end of the weight scale, to be honest.  I just wanted to show you an interesting article that might help you to see that eating as little as you are isn't good for you and can, in fact, make your body prone to gaining weight.

I know you say it's muscle but the thing is that you can gain fat *inside* muscles and that makes it look like the muscle's getting bulkier when it really isn't.  I have a very hard time believing you're gaining actual muscle because that's basically impossible to do without (a) lifting heavy weights and (b) eating lots of protein and (c) eating more calories than your body is burning.  And it doesn't sound to me like you're doing (a) or (b).

When you increased your calories last time, how much did you increase by?  And for how long?  You may not have given your body long enough to trust that you were going to continue to feed it.  Was it with mostly healthy foods and a good balance of protein/carbs/fat?

The reason I'm sure it will be mostly water weight is that what happens when you start feeding your body properly again is that your muscles grab onto some carbs for energy ('cause they don't trust you to give them more later) and the carb molecules wrap themselves up in water.  That's to be expected.  And, once the muscles get used to being fed on a regular basis, they let go of some of that back-up fuel and the water goes with it.  I suppose it's possible you might gain a pound of fat (not ten though!) over the month of eating more but that should also come back off once your body stops thinking it has to store every spare scrap of energy you give it and lets the metabolism fuel up.  1500 calories/day is less than *anyone* with a healthy metabolism will burn in a day.  So, once your metabolism is healthy (should take no longer than two months - probably less), you'll lose fat on that number of calories.

you can gain fat inside muscles? i didn't even know that was possible, do you have a link to an article explaining how that happens?

also, last time i increased by about 100 a month until i went from about 1000 to 1800-1700 (there was one month during which i increased by about 300, so it didn't take 7 months). i didn't start gaining until i hit about 1500 though and i gained 10 pounds in 2 weeks.

also, i was eating *mostly* carbs with a few vegetables and some protein (coming from mainly yogurt and the chicken in frozen meals). all i'm really eating now is carbs: breads, cereals, etc. could this be a factor? i thought it was simply calories in/out. lately i've been eating a lot of junk because i thought you COULD lose weight no matter what you were eating as long as you were eating less than you burned. so i've been getting a lot of crappy stuff in my system like chips and cookies, but very small portions but i'm not eating any vegetables or protein. does this matter at all (in terms of weight, not general health)

wait a second--i keep telling you it's muscle, lol. it doesn't feel like fat at all. i asked my father who used to be into weight training if he thought it was muscle or fat, he felt it and he said it was "definitely muscle" and i can feel it too. also, i'm not in a calorie deficit. not at all. if i were then i wouldn't be gaining weight.

susie, the last time i increased my calories i gained weight very quickly: 10 pounds of nothing but fat (this was a year ago). i'm REALLY scared to do it again and i'm pretty sure that it wouldn't be in all water weight (i don't weigh myself much anyway. i just take my measurements). and i never said i was obese, i'm just not at a low weight. the last time i checked, which was a little less than a month ago, i was about 115 lbs at 5'2".

but i guess my question is: how can you be sure that the weight gain will not be "real weight" if it's happened before? i wouldn't be so hesitant if it weren't for the fact that i've tried this before and failed. moreover, the weight that i gained when i increased my calories a year ago didn't come off until i dropped below 1000 again..

no, i'm probably not eating that much. to be honest, over the summer i was eating about 1000 calories (which i had been doing for a long time previous, i just randomly started losing weight before the summer without changing my diet). i'm eating a couple hundred less now with the occasional over 1000 which i haven't done in a while, since i had seen that i was gaining weight.

but i've been undereating for over a year and have never gained weight before until last december when i gained weight after a short period of eating about 1800 calories. i understand that i'm in starvation mode, but i've been in starvation mode for a long time and with all of the walking i'm doing now i don't understand why NOW i'm gaining weight rather than before.

over the summer i got a blood test and my doctor said my thyroid was fine. it's not like i haven't lost weight before, i'm just having a hard time losing it again. i lost maybe 10 pounds a little before the summer and it's all come back even though i've been more active.

But are you as active now as you were during the summer?  I know I don't have as much time for long walks/bike rides now (especially with the snow on the ground) as I had in the summer.  If you're gaining any significant weight (i.e. not just 1-5 pounds which might be water weight), you must be either eating more than you think or burning less calories than you think.  When you log a 1 hour walk and CC (or another source) tells you you've burned 300 calories (for example), are you factoring in that 50-75 of those calories are ones you would have burned anyway just by existing?

With regard to the thighs, they might be acquiring intramuscular fat (rather than a layer of fat over top).  That's a lot more likely than them getting muscular/bulky from just walking.  To combat that, you just need to make sure you eat fewer calories than you burn and it'll eventually go away.

actually i'm even more active. over the summer i walked 3-7 miles a day and now i'm walking 7 EVERY day , plus an additional 3-4 every other day in walking fitness class (although this isn't as intense as my power walks). during the summer i was also just sitting at my computer all day aside from my walking, but now i'm up and running at school.

i don't log my calories online but i eat the exact same things every day so i KNOW i shouldn't be gaining weight on this many calories, especially considering i've dropped a lot of them since the summer. the problem is that my body does NOT want to burn fat for some reason. i figure my BMR must be ridiculously low, but i'm not even at a low weight.

i've been gaining fat in every area except my thighs, where it's really, really obvious it's muscle just by attempting to squeeze it.

and yeah, i keep very close track of my calories and i have been eating even LESS than i had during the summer where i weighed less, i'm not sure what happened there but that =/= the discussion.

thanks for your input everyone, but i'm afraid nothing is helping, even though i've been eating more fibrous bulky fruits and vegetables...

also for some reason its becoming hard for me to stomach small amounts of food, and i'm starting to involuntarily throw up a little every once in a while, could my intestines be blocked....?

ohh i see... so do you think i should stop eating so much fiber one? maybe limit myself to 1/2c a day for a little while until things get better?

i'm thinking for fiber i could eat carrots.... as they're the only high fiber vegetable i have in the house (or vegetable in general actually, the fridge is very empty) right now. good idea?

oh and does boiling the carrots destroy the fiber?

but i've been doing it for a while, and the constipation only started recently..

well is it constipation if there isn't really any waste in my anus (i don't feel any)? it feels like all the food i eat is just stuck in my stomach, and i have a lot of gas but its very hard to pass and usually gets stuck. i also have hemroids now, which makes me feel like i have waste up there which makes me push and make it worse, but i think all the food is stuck somewhere else... i took a laxative like two days ago, it made me get rid of a LOT, including stuff i ate a couple days back (i saw corn lol), and it HURT like hell, but now everything is all stopped up again.

oh and i just counted, i guess i get about 32-35 grams of fiber daily

so i don't think fiber is the issue at all, and i drink a lot of water too

no honestly since i'm trying to recover from an ED, but it's hard for me to eat a lot, though some times i make it up to 1700 cals but i'm scared and go back down most of the time. thing is i've never had this problem even when i was restricting really badly soo i don't see how that could be the problem (im at least eating more than idid during the bad part of my ED but even then i wasnt constipated)

hm, well i don't count my fiber grams, but i know i get plenty, if i can finish off a box of fiber one in a week.... haha

also i eat a lot of carbs that contain fiber like oatmeal.

as for water, i counted yesterday and i know i got at least 90 oz of water. i also drink green tea (2 tea bags daily, which is i believe 16 oz)

so i don't think i'm dehydrated... ): but no i haven't introduced any new foods lately, so i dunno
