Weight Loss Looking For Success Stories. Jul 23 2008

My success story is less about losing weight and more about being healthy. I'm 5'9'' and 146, I have lost 8 lbs since I started in May and want to lose maybe 6 more. Besides that, I finally eat healthy after years of just grabbing and go. I make sure that I get fruits and veggies in my diet and I'm eating whole grains and less fat. People have noticed that I look brighter, I have more energy and all in all feel better. My husband noticed that I'm less cranky and seem happier. So...yes, losing the weight was nice but I'm so happy about feeling great.

I agree with the opinion that it varies on geographic region. I live in NYC where there are so many thin, healthy people. The portions are generally decent sized, and there is an abundance of fresh, organic, local foods and restaurants that provide them. That is, if you can afford that kind of food. I used to be a social worker for the impoverished, mainly working in boroughs other than Manhattan. Obesity is a problem there because healthy foods are a lot more expensive and harder to come by. Also, there is a cycle of poor eating passed down generation to generation. In the U.S., health food is expensive if you don't live in an area where its locally grown.

When I go to Western Massachusetts to visit my parents, its a different story. It seems that everyone is overweight. Just this July 4th, we went to a park and I was amazed at how many obese people there are. Its sad because its a rural, farming area and there are so many fresh vegetable stands and local farms that provide milk and meat.

ITS YOUR AGE. In my experience, teenage boys think they are supposed to find a certain body type attractive, somewhat a peer pressure issue.  When they get older, they may be more comfortable accepting the fact that they are not into skinny girls. Also, older men like WOMEN, (with breasts, hips and butts). I would try dating non-Americans as well, they have different standards regarding beauty.

Do you enjoy group activities or sports? I take classes at my gym and I love it. If you find a good teacher, they will really motivate you. Also, have you thought about playing sports on the weekend, like tennis or frisbee?

Ok, thanks for your help! I just went out on my lunch break and bought the protein shake stuff. I'm going to definitely be more aware of my calorie, fat and protein intake now. I wrote down the percentages I need on a postage note and put it on my desk so I'll be all set.

What happens if I eat less than 1500 calories. I havent really changed my diet since I started on this website so I may have always eaten this way. I do eat a lot of fattening foods but find it difficult to get protein without fat included.
