Weight Loss What will you do with your food scale once you're done? Oct 29 2008

I use it for portion control but I mostly have it for for recipes since measuring in grams tends to be a lot more accurate, especially for baking, than cups.

Don't worry, I'm an emotional under-eater also. Our bodies are strong, and even though it's not healthy sometimes you just need time to get through something. The guy I was seeing broke things off at the beginning of last week, and for about 3 days afterward I drank only coffee, ate the occasional piece of fruit or dry toast, and went to the gym obsessively to turn my brain off. It wasn't nearly as bad as your situation (so sorry about that btw!) but anything like that will always be difficult. My boss even came up to me at work when she saw me on day two making a second pot of coffee (I am normally a tea drinker btw) and she said, "Are you sure you don't want some cigarettes to go with that coffee diet?"

I laughed. She then told me she lost 20lbs on the coffee cigarette diet when her husband divorced her, and then put it back on with relapse binge eating.

Don't worry. I know it sounds cliche, but you really are better off without him. Hope you're feeling better.

Marinade the tofu for a bit in sauteed garlic, onions, scallions, white vinegar, and a little red wine. It will look pink and putrid, but taste delicious.

L: Large green salad with cucumber, carrots, kidney beans and lowfat dressing

S: Plain nonfat yogurt with fiber 1 cereal and fruit of some sort.

D: Spinach and mushroom omelet with a side of curried chickpeas with zucchini.

Occasional before bed snack: Celery with chunky peanut butter

And lots of water!

Tofu.

It just sits there in the fridge, looking at me every time I open the door. "Pick me! I'm bland! I have vile texture! I'm unappetizing in every possible way! Slice me up and add me to anything - I can ruin any food you choose! Pick me, I'm good for you!"

Tofu is delicious. I highly recommend marinating it in sauteed garlic and onions with white vinegar and some cheap merlot (the only thing 2 buck chuck is good for)!

It is healthier to not eat cheetos or chips, period. tortilla chips if you must, and the 100 cal packs if you're not willing to give them up (but only 1!)

The Freshman 15 is NOT a myth! It happens at one point or another but it is do-able.

I gained more like the freshman 25 in the dorms. I lost 10lbs the summer after my freshman year, then maintained for sophomore year. Now I'm working on that last 15 for this summer.

All i can say is dance, try not to drink heavily, and have home cooked healthy meals when you can, but it will still hit you no matter what.

Thank you so much everyone for all your support! I'm feeling much better (still crap compared to where I'd like to be, but a million times better than where I was at this original post). This weekend I visited some friends from back home, bbqed in the backyard and played football (the great kind, where you can tickle tackle the other people until they cry, or where my best friend's idea of an interception is picking me up when I have the ball and running me across the goal line).

I still hurt a bit, but I realize it will pass. Thanks for everything!

First, you're very pretty. Your husband has no idea what he's talking about (but I'm glad you talked to him about it and that things have worked out for the best).

Second, if you do want to lose weight, do it to make yourself feel better and be happy, not for your husband or for anyone else.

Love from CC and the wonderful community.

Motivation How do you resist temptation? Jun 16 2008
18:27 (UTC)

Just don't resist if you really want something. I let myself have whatever I want but you have to prioritize and decide what's really important. Is it really important that I have this slice of chocolate cake today? No, not really?

But then I go to the dessert diner 2 weeks later and think, "Is it important that I have a slice of the raspberry truffle torte with the dark chocolate grand marnier mousse and pecan halves? Yes, i think it is.

This weekend I was bad. I made brunch for fathers day with lots of butter, cream, sugar and champagne. And friday I had burgers with friends. But for me, those were one hundred percent worth it. This week I will be better.

And I find it amazing that your dining hall has good food. Mine never did.

Today was super bad for me. I made father's day brunch, so of course I made the richest food possible. We're talking pecan scones, eggs benedict, champagne, mango salad, etc.

worth it though. oh well.

I will totally join you! I'm in that stretch against that last 10 lbs too (end of sophomore year, but i totally **** up due to alcohol in copious amounts and the fact that people in my house like to make cookies and curly fries at 2am).

when you have fresh artichoke hearts, i love those to be crab stuffed. I think the ingredients you have here would make an amazing egg white omelet (with a little feta). If you want to do the stuffed mushroom thing, I recommend to leave out the artichoke hearts, and stuff them with a crab, wild rice and blue cheese mixture. season with thyme and tarragon. absolutely delightful.

It's mostly your age, but in large part social circles (also based heavily on geography, and ethnicity too). I've dated mostly white guys with a latino guy here and there, and they all prefer curvy girls to stick thin models. Additionally, most are sort of fascinated by a half asian girl with curves (my mother is Portuguese, therefore I was destined to never be skinny, no matter how hard i try).

Mostly, it's all about seeming proportional. Curves don't have to mean fat. My #s are 36/28/38 (trying to work on those ratios a bit) and i would much rather have that be stick thin.

Additionally, California (just not LA) may be a bit more forgiving to that since you do have more exposure to different body types, different groups, and different ethnicities (which to have common biological characteristics). If you're from the middle of nowhere, then there may be a more commonly accepted standard of beauty.

Just don't get discouraged. It's mostly just high school. In college and later in life, most guys start figuring out that what they want is not necessarily what magazines or TV tell them to want. We all find someone eventually.

Weight Loss Weight loss question Jun 13 2008

Good to know these numbers. Hopefully they're accurate

Weight Loss overestimating my calorie intake. Jun 13 2008
18:43 (UTC)

What everyone said before. I highly recommend high fiber foods. A serving of plain oatmeal with fresh blueberries or bananas will fill you up much more than toast (and all the salt from vegemite is pretty bad for you too) For lunch, i would recommend high protein things in the middle of the day. Have tuna on whole grain breads, cut out the snack foods (and I've also taken to preparing things with plain yogurt that I used to prepare with mayonnaise). Have salads with chickpeas and light dressing (i also highly recommend flax seeds on everything for a nutty, crunchy, high fiber/protein satisfier).

If you're just in high school, you really don't have reason to be concerned. It's good that you're watching out for your weight and your health, but i remember high school and how hard it is to find time to eat right and exercise. College is potentially more difficult for that, but at least you get to cook your own food (at least i do) and know exactly what goes into it.

Hope you're doing better with your goals.

Weight Loss Restaurant Suggestions Jun 13 2008
18:34 (UTC)

Simply put, you're not going to get away with 200-300 calories when you go out to a restaurant for lunch. It's just not going to happen, especially if you get chinese food (not a big fan of PF Changs myself). Hell, even if you just get a salad, you'll probably walk away with more calories in the croutons and the dressing.

It's not so bad to splurge once in a rare while. We all deserve to treat ourselves sometimes. Go out and order shellfish with lots of veggies, preferably grilled and no sugar sauces. Order dressings on the side and box up half, but you don't need to stick so rigidly to this plan.

Foods What is the most deliciously bad for you thing that you crave? Jun 07 2008
20:12 (UTC)
40

Craving number 1: Haagen Daaz Sticky Toffee Pudding Ice Cream (about 300someodd calories for a serving)

Have switched to Ben and Jerries Half-Baked frozen yogurt. About 180 for a serving (delicious btw)

Craving number 2: Cheese, in mass quantities, as well as cream.

Also curly fries, also in mass quantities

And I make a killer hollandaise sauce that I pretty much adore putting on everything... have to cut that out too (sadness)

Weight Loss How do you curb that hungry feeling? Jun 07 2008
19:24 (UTC)

High fiber foods do wonders for keeping you full. They take longer to break down in your system, so you are less likely to feel hungry. For example, my breakfast in the morning is 3/4 cup of plain oatmeal prepared with water, splenda brown, and blueberries or a banana. This is only about 300 or so calories, and it totally keeps me going from 8am until sometime around 1 in the afternoon.

I highly recommend oats, flax seeds for your salad, and agar powder (it's a seaweed product that is a great gelatin replacement for baking and can be mixed with tea in the mornings or afternoons). I use about 1/2 tsp for a 7oz cup of tea.

I just started using this website. I'm 5'1", medium frame, and currently 139 trying to get to 125 or 120. I like that this offers the community support and resources to take off 15lbs of college induced laziness, ice cream, beer, midnight snacks, and simple bad habits.

Hope this was of any help
