The Lounge Work dress code opinions? May 20 2009

Good afternoon everyone.

I work in a "business casual" enviroment. I know from over-hearing the uppity-ups that you should always lean to the conservative side.  Just above the knee is short enough.  A nice cami to cover the cleavage is a good idea and you can go from work straight out if you want.  Heals should be easy to walk in (and not something you would see next to a stripper pole)pants should never pull or pinch across the belly, thighs or butt and the pockets should never gap.  Button Up shirts should not gap across the fullest part of the chest, that means it is too small.

To me business casual means a suit jacket is not required. Trousers + blouse/sweater or Skirt + blouse/sweater. Pumps or  boots and simple accessories.

Ok, sorry to vent, but I sit next to the "black socks & birkenstocks, polyester pants and cotton pullover shirt" woman all day.

organic apple slices, I apple

healthy choice chicken noodle, 1 can (which is two servings)

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Weight Loss Gaining muscle but not losing fat? Apr 21 2009

Back in 2006 I decided that I was not going to move up to a size 12, so I started working out at the gym. I went to spinning class 2x per week and a cross-training class called "power flex" 2x per week, with one day of swimming mixed in.  I gained weight (muscle).  I finally decided to start tracking my calories and eating 5x's per day.  What a difference that made!

Spreading my calories out over 5 mini-meals helped me lose 25 lbs! I have kept it off for 2 years now and I am very content with a size 8. I actually dropped my gym membership and substitued walking and a yoga DVD.

Hang in there!

Yes, we sound very similar.  I also have a desk job and I work 6am to 3pm.  It is part of my lack of motivation, I get up so early then when I get home I am dead tired and I still have dinner and homework with the kids to get done.  I try to get naps in, but that doesn't always happen.  I know that getting back into a work out routine will help give me the energy that I am lacking. Plus, with school being out I don't have the homework to help with anymore, that frees up lots of time in the evening for me.

I forgot to welcome  immom!

Thanks (as usual) to lynnhaslost.  Pizza is a huge weakness for me, but you are right, I shouldn't beat myself up about it! I have moved on and logged 1300 and 1400 for the 2 days since then, not too shabby!  One thing I have noticed is I need to eat more for breakfast...that is a new goal of mine.  Your suggestions were great as usual, and lucky for me I like stuff like veggie burgers, tofu, rocks, twigs, vegetables and all other healthy foods! (except rhubarb, YUCK, who invented that stuff)

musicismydestiny you are too sweet! I get carded unless I have my 16 year old son with me.  Plus I married a younger man, that also makes me look younger! *wink*.  I am so over my 1800 calorie day! It is so 2 days ago, I hardly think of it (until the next time we order pizza of course!)

...and talking about plateaus..I believe I am at a new plateau, they seem to happen every 10 lbs.  But, I am not going to stress about it, I have that running clinic coming up and I am off to Vegas next week... and I can't think of such things whilst on vacation! Cool

welcome musicismydestiny (mollie)

I struggled with anorexia when I was 13-17.  and now I am on thyroid meds.  I am not sure if it is related, my doctor has not said yes or no, but I feel for you.  I tend to hit plateaus and it feels like nothing works.  My only consolation is this:  even when I fall off the calorie counting wagon and feel crappy about myself, I look at it this way, at least I am trying.  At least I am out of denial and ready to change.  The average American woman is 5'5" and 165 lbs and a size 14.  I think if I am at least working on changing my body, that is what counts.  I am happy with what I have, I just want it to be a little better.  Also, now that I am in my late 30's, this time I am doing it for myself.

Hang in there Mollie, you are still a knock out! Take a look around next time you are out on the town,  take a look around, I am sure you will notice that you look just as good or probably better than most of the women in their 30's.

I agree, it is very relative.  My friend and I are good examples.  I am 5'4" and weigh 141 (lost 2 lbs this week!) and she is 5'5" and weighs 150.  I am a solid size 8 jeans and will be a comfortable size 6 at 135.  She is a size 12 jeans and will not be in a size 10 until her low 140's. However, I wear a medium shirt and she wears a small.  It is a matter of where your problem areas are.  She has large hips, butt and thighs.  I have broad shoulders and a large ribcage and my tummy is my problem area.

I would guess that if you keep a spreadsheet with your inches lost, not your weight.  That will help you determine when you can go try on the next size smaller.

My husband,  our closest friends and I went to Vegas in June '06.  I had reached 164 lbs (5'4") that previous December and I knew that the hot weather in Vegas meant shorts and bathing suits so I started working out.  I worked out like crazy! I did spinning classes 3 times a week and a strength class 2 days.    I lost 2 lbs in the 6 mo.s.   When we got back from Vegas I looked at the pictures we took and cried. I maintained 162 lbs for a year, then last September I decided to start an excel spreadsheet to log my daily calories/daily carbs.  It is amazing what a difference it makes when you realize exactly how many calories you are consuming!   Since then I have lost 20 lbs and I am still going! We are headed to Vegas in a week and I feel so much better about myself this time.  Now I just need to up the daily exercise and I should be gtg. Cool

Hi All! sorry to arrive at the party late, I just saw this post!

Age 37

Weight 142

Goal 125 (would be happy in the low 130's)

I have posted in the 30's lounge that I hate exercise, but I made a decision today after some wonderful support from the ladies in there and I am signing up for a 12 week "Learn to Run" course.  It doens't start until July 30, so I will have to start walking in the interim.  My calorie goal is 1200, but I usually hover around 1400. (When I start running I will obviously up the calories) I need to get to the grocery store this weekend and start some meal planning.  I am a daily shopper-I go after work- and I cook for 2 teenage boys and my husband.  Let's just say that 3 oz of fish and some brocolli doesn't satiate their appetites.

Good luck to everyone, and wish me luck because I am going to Las Vegas in a week and that always sets me back.

lynn: Aren't men funny that way? I was talking to my husband about losing 10-20 more lbs and he was shaking his head and I could see the concern on his face.  I just laughed at him because when we met I weighed probably 105 soaking wet! He saw me go from 105 to 164, then back down to 143 and he thinks I should stop.  I reminded him that when we met he was happy with my petite size and always said how he liked my size.  When I hit 164 he said he loved my new "curves".  Now that I am at 142 he thinks I look better than ever...men are so weird!  I would say he is just trying to be nice, but that isn't his personality...he really doesn't know how to not be brutally honest.  He is the kind of  guy that answers "yes" when you ask if your butt looks big in those jeans.  Thanks again for your support, I was skeptical about joining a community because I have always been one to "do it on my own" and not ask for support, but I have changed my mind!

Manta: Thanks to you and Lynn, I am writing a check for $90 and registering for a "learn to run" course that lasts 12 weeks.  I figure I do it for 12 weeks (minus one week in August when we take our family vacation) and if I hate it, I try something else, but what if I love running and I have been missing it all this time? You never know until you try! If I don't like it, then I will take the guide njmattes has posted!

Thanks to both of you, and everyone else! I will keep you posted as to my progress.  And I will try to get a picture up to go with my name here soon!

lynnhaslost: Thank you for your support!  Motivation is my achilles heel. I would love to lose 20 more lbs to get to 123, but I would be happy with 10 lbs, that should put me at a comfortable size 6.  I have lost 10 lbs counting calories and 10 lbs by counting carbs.  My heaviest weight was 164, which I hit in 2006 and maintained for a year.  My husband doesn't think I need to lose anymore, he likes the "curves" (that means he likes the increase in my bra size) My friends have less motivation than me.  If I don't learn to do it for myself, it will never happen.

jennelaw:  I do love having my teenagers around, they are so much fun! I am really lucky, they have not acted up or had any "angst".  It has been a pleasure so far.  I will look at the library, see if they have books on CD (I don't have a tape player). Thanks for the suggestion!

edit: I just added pilates to my activity log for today, so my motivation has started-time to dust off the pilates DVD!

It looks like I am not alone in my predisposition.  Exercise is just not something I enjoy.  Maybe if my husband were to exercise with me, but he says he walks enough at work.  My friends will exercise with me for a week or two, then they give up.  It is sad because they in just as much need of exercise as me, if not more so.

I have a bike, but not the inclination to get on it.  HELP!

Good Afternoon everyone!  I am new to the site, I have been tracking calories on my own excel spreadsheet for 2 months and I have lost 10 lbs.  I am now using this site to track calories and exercise.

I am 37 years old, married, 2 teenage boys ages 13 and 16.  I am 5'4" tall and weigh 142 lbs.  I am a comfortable size 8, I can squeeze into some 6's.  Dress size is 8.  At my ideal weight/size I was 122 lbs. I last saw that weight approx 6 years ago.  I am on thyroid replacement for the rest of my life as well.

I have an athletic build (narrow hips and thighs, average size chest).  My problem area is (hold onto your seats, this is a new one) my mid-section.  Since I have a "boyish" figure (narrow hips, straight waist) the extra inches in the middle make me look much bigger.  Also, I have broad shoulders and big arms.  All of this upper body bulk is making me look awful.  I used to be very active but now I have a desk job and I hate working out.  I might be ADD because working out is so boring to me that I dread the thought. I find that when I decide to exercise I spend the day thinking about how much I am not looking forward to actually doing it.  I get myself all upset and begin dreading the end of my work day. I am an avid reader, movie buff and computer nerd. My brain has to be stimulated or I am a basket case.  I need suggestions so I can kick this lifestyle and start getting active!

One of my ideas:  Books on CD-listen to a book while walking.  Pro: brain activity Con: they are expensive.

Other ideas? So far I have belonged to a gym with 2 friends (I lasted a year longer than they did); a girls walking group after work (again, all bailed after a few weeks); spinning class; step areobics.
