Weight Loss How long does it take for true weight gain to show up on the scale? Jun 30 2009

I completely disagree with bmfan77. Of course the second you've swallowed your food, it won't be converted to fat. Your body needs an energy supply, and stores excess as fat later. I've heard that it takes about 3 days for food you ate to become fat. However, I don't think you will suddenly gain weight several weeks after overeating.

Health & Support Yet-another-period-question... Jun 19 2009

Original Post by izzyy23:

My question is, for those who managed to regain their periods, is it normal for the period to be quite irregular during early stages of regaining it?

YES. After gaining 15 pounds recovering from anorexia, I got my first period in almost two years in January, and the second in June (one day short of 5 months later). I used to have a heavy 8-day period (which was terrible!) and the two I've gotten were light 4-day ones. Try to reach/maintain a healthy weight, and eventually you'll get another period.

If you are still struggling with an eating disorder, I highly recommend seeing a doctor. I would have never recovered without medical support. Usually people can't do it on their own. At least tell a family member you can trust. Good luck with your period and being healthy :)

Generally speaking, if a woman misses three or more consecutive periods, she should go to a doctor. However, you just began menstruating 9 months ago. If you feel like you're still suffering with disordered eating, I'd suggest telling your mom that you are having some serious trouble and ask her to take you to a doctor/nutritionist who could help you.

Also, was your BMI higher when you last got your period? I lost a lot of weight due to anorexia, and then gained it back during recovery. The very lowest I get my period is with a BMI of ~19.5, so maybe gaining a couple pounds (or at least eating enough calories to maintain) would help.

Yes, but I've found that it's important to remember that your loved ones don't know or care that you gained 3 lbs and you are still the same person. Don't let the scale get to you. Tongue out

Weight Loss lady question... Jun 19 2009

I was up 2 pounds the week before my period. Yesterday was my last day and I've already dropped 1 of them.

I'm usually a pound or two heavier, but some women can be very bloated and be like 5# more than usual. You'll be back to your normal weight when it ends (assuming you didn't eat 10 bars of chocolate....Embarassed)

As long as you're eating for maintenance/loss, don't worry about what the scale says.

If you're sedentary, you're probably going to need slightly less calories to lose weight unless you're (a) male, or (b) very tall/heavy.

Maybe try 1600 for a week or two and see if you've lost weight?

Fitness Running in the morning? Jun 13 2009

I adore running in the morning! I guess I am the opposite of karozel. In my opinion, morning is the very best time to run (especially in the summer!) because the cool weather keeps you running briskly to keep warm and the sun doesn't melt you. While my legs can be sore after a run, I'm never psychologically tired-- always very energized. Good luck!

This is interesting, silverbutterfly. I'm just over 5' 0" and 102 pounds-- yet I have the same body fat % as you! You must be very athletic and muscley! Wink

I've always been very soft and curvy for my weight (measurements 30 1/2- 23 1/2- 34 1/2, pear shape!)

This happens to me often. I will be eating with friends, who are all eating vast amounts of food, and I am eating more modestly. My friends (often those who are eating the most and are very overweight) always try to force food on me-- "Aren't you hungry?" "Do you not like my cooking?" "You must be starving, you've hardly eaten anything!" I think when people feel self-conscious of their own eating habits, they try to discourage others from eating healthy. It makes them feel better about themselves in a mean sort of way.

This probably isn't the reason why, but I get dizzy upon standing because I have low blood pressure. Undereating can also make you dizzy, though.

You will not look any different losing 2 pounds. If you don't mind me asking, why do you even want to lose weight? Your BMI is barely 18, so you are already on the borderline of underweight. Also, 1200 calories is bare minimum.

Try doing strength training to gain your muscle back. You will look fitter and leaner, and also actually be healthier.

Try using whole-grain bread and adding some protein. Just bread and oil wouldn't keep me going through the AM.

How do you feel/look when you're not basing things on the scale? If you're fitter and have more muscle, your BMI is naturally higher. BMI is a generally helpful but flawed number.

If you're really set on losing 10 more, I'd say don't tell a lot of people if they're unsupportive. Try to find a supportive friend/relative who you can trust to keep you motivated to keep going.

Good luck!

The Lounge Sundresses, what do you think? Jun 09 2009

I say keep trying pretty dresses on, and when one comes along that you feel good in, buy it! Unless it's ridiculously expensive, you have it in your closet waiting for you to find the self-confidence.

In the summer, I see women of all sizes wearing sundresses, bikinis, etc so I don't think you'd be breaking any rules! I'd suggest that if it's very low-cut, wear a tank top/camisole underneath. Otherwise, don't panic if a little of your bra strap shows. Being a teen, I'm probably not the one to give advice to you, but I don't think it's a terrible thing for someone to glimse a *strap*! Yes, women have breasts and yes, they wear bras. (I would say that you shouldn't try to abandon it. I'm small enough to get away with it but even if you are, it creates more uncomfortable feelings than it's worth!)

Health & Support Blue fingernails (still!) Jun 09 2009

I have the same problem. I have very poor circulation in both my fingers and toes. My doctor says that it is likely mild Raynaud's (though not as horrible looking as in the link vwiggins posted!). Exercising helps, or anything to keep your fingers warmer (like gloves, holding a warm mug of hot cocoa/tea).

My fingers weren't weird until I developed anorexia, and even though I have been eating normally for about two years, they are still blue when I am anything but very warm. I think it's sort of the price to pay for hurting my body :(

Obviously I'm not a doctor, but in my opinion, unless it's painful or otherwise damaging, a doctor is probably not necessary.

Weight Loss Body Fat % vs. Body Weight May 31 2009

This calculator gives me a much higher bf% than mine actually is.

My bf% is about 22% and it gave me 32.42% (!)

I wouldn't worry about it.

I was skeptical of one someone posted using your BMI, but it gave me 21% so it seems pretty accurate. Here it is:

Adult Body Fat % = (1.20 x BMI) + (0.23 x Age) - (10.8 x gender) - 5.4

(for gender, use 1 for male, 0 for female)

See if that works any better for you Tongue out

Maintaining What a nutritionist suggested. Opinions? May 15 2009

This sounds like a very bad idea to me! Eating 600 calories/day is ridiculous. You can zig-zag calories but more like:

Day 1: 1600
Day 2: 2000
Day 3: 1700
Day 4: 1900
Day 5: 1500
Day 6: 2000
Day 7: 1900

That way you won't starve one day and feel painfully full the next. Also, unless you're either very small or you are quite sedentary, 1800 is perfectly reasonable for maintaining.

This is just my 2 cents. Generally, women shouldn't eat less than 1200 cals/day. (Men: 1500/day)

Health & Support Large Breakfast vs. Small Breakfast Oct 04 2008
03:25 (UTC)

I would definitely say to eat a big breakfast. Whenever I eat a big breakfast, I am never very hungry for dinner (and small nighttime meals also help digestion and sleep). When I eat a small breakfast, I am ravenous the rest of the day, and want to keep eating even after I am full in the evening.

Sorry, but if 200 calories still sounds like a lot to you, this doesn't seem like recovery. Might I ask, what foods are they? Is it nutritious? If it is, then don't worry. And if you're maintaining, then your body needs that extra bit of food.

I can totally sympathize with you. I have just started high school and its so hard to keep on track with recovery when you're stressed and presented with bad role models. It's great that you managed to gain the weight back. And when you're gaining, 3000+ cals is totally fine. Just tell yourself that this is all about staying healthy and ALIVE! Best of luck to you, I know you can do it!

(P.S. gi-jane said to aim to gain 10 more pounds. I know how terrifying this sounds, so take it just 1 or 2 at a time. Much less scary!)

Just wondering how old you are? I think that 96 is fine since you're so short, but you're not eating much. If you're exercising at all, I'd try 1400-1500, maybe even more if you're a teen. I'm short too, 5' .5" and eat ~1800 to maintain.

you are most definitely NOT fat!!! and honestly, there is no way you'd notice losing 3 pounds. i've had to gain also for anorexia recovery. i've put on 11 pounds already, and am just starting to notice any difference. maybe you could strength train to get more muscle? also, everyone can pinch fat (and skin!!) on their bodies. dont worry, and be healthy! dont let the ED win.

1 day doesnt do anything horrific. eat what you can, and get a better intake tomorrow. however, if this happens often where you don't feel hungry, eat anyways. your body needs food.
