Foods Top Ten things you eat the most often... Nov 20 2009
06:03 (UTC)
3

1. Chicken Breast (I'm allergic to beef, pork is too fatty, and fish is expensive, so I eat chicken pretty much every day, if not every meal.)

2. Egg Whites

3. Tomatoes (in salad, on sandwiches, plain, thrown in with almost anything I cook)

4. Apples

5. Oroweat Double Fiber bread or english muffins. (I love this bread, I never get anything else)

6. Joe's O's (Trader Joe's version of Cheerios) with milk and a little sugar.

7. Broccoli (also thrown in with almost anything I cook).

8. Rice (white, unfortunately. I bought a 20 lb. bag of it before I realized how much better for you brown rice is, and I'm still waiting for it to get used up.)

9. Low Carb-High Fiber tortillas

10. Olive oil (doesn't really count as a food all by itself, but I use it for everything except stir fry)

Wow, I'm so used to the popcorn I eat at home that I never would have guessed the popcorn at the theater was this scary! Not that I get popcorn at the theater very often anyway, but this definitely means I'll get my popcorn fix at home.

Foods Brown stuff at the bottom of my slow cooker? Nov 19 2009
23:19 (UTC)

If you're talking about cooking soup, and the brown stuff you're referring to is a  grainy sludge that settles to the bottom it's little bits of meat that fall away from the rest. It wouldn't be fat, because the fat melts and floats on top of the broth. Whenever I make soup, the last cup or so is just broth and a bunch of little particles from the meat, potatoes, etc.

Weight Loss How much water do you drink? Nov 19 2009

I'm horrible about not drinking enough water. If I don't consciously think about getting enough water, I can easily go all day without drinking any. Unless I work out, then I get really thirsty afterward. So I drink anywhere from 0-85 oz. a day.

When you click the "add to food log" button, the first thing on the form where you enter the amount of that food is the date. Simply put in yesterday's date, and it will put it on yesterday's food log. You can also put in dates in the future, which is great for planning ahead. (I generally try to do a food log a day ahead of time to make sure I'm getting the right balance of vitamins, fiber, etc. before I actually start eating so I don't have to try to make up for things at the end of the day)

Foods What soda does to your body Nov 04 2009

While I will agree with many of the reasons not to drink soda, I really do wish that doctors (or "doctor" in this case?) would run their articles by a chemist before publishing them.  Carbonation has NOTHING to do with phosphoric acid content.  In fact, root beer (which is carbonated) has no phosphoric acid at all.  Fact checking would be nice.

ditto

Young Calorie Counters Did you eat all your veggies today? Jul 16 2009

Generally I get enough fruits and veggies, but it kind of depends on how good I'm being and what I have in the house. I haven't had any yet today, but I'll at least have an apple. If I get any more fruit or any veggies depends on if I make it to the grocery store today (my fridge is pretty bare). But I want to have a nice big salad later.

I experience this regularly -- it is called orthostatic hypotension and it is, indeed, a form of low blood pressure. I haven't heard of it being caused by a caloric deficit, but perhaps that is one possible cause. I think that dehydration, too little salt in your diet, or a reaction to a medication of some sort are more likely culprits.

Edit: Digging around a bit more on ole' Google Scholar, it looks like there may be some kind of association between very low calorie diets and this particular condition. Your intake doesn't really qualify, though, as VCLDs are diets with 400-800 kcal/day. You might try eating a bit more and seeing if it doesn't improve, though.

Hmm. I've had this since I was a kid. I was told it was vertigo and was perfectly normal (by my parents), and when I went to the doctor he couldn't set it off so he assumed it was nothing. Interesting to find out it's low blood pressure. (Although now that I'm exercising more, I find it happens less frequently.)

There are a lot of useful tools (and helpful people) here, and it can help you lose the weight if you stick with it. I lost 40 lbs, but then I quit for 6 months, and now I'm back again.

Good luck!

Calorie Count Shouldn't We Be Counting Calories From Fat?? Jul 07 2009
18:23 (UTC)
1

When something lists calories from fat, those calories are already included in the calorie count. For example if a food's nutrition facts says 100 calories and then it says 27 calories from fat, It just means that of those 100 calories 27 are from fat.

The same thing applies to total fat and saturated fat (or trans fat, or monounsaturated fat). If a food has 6 grams of fat and 2 grams of saturated fat, it means 2 of those 6 fat grams are saturated fat.

You didn't ask about this one, but it works the same way. Carbs are generally broken down into sugar and fiber. If a food has 10 grams of carbs, 6 grams of sugar, and 2 grams of fiber, the grams of sugar and fiber are part of the total carb count, not in addition to it.

Hope this clears things up.

Tacos?! ROFL!

Do you all personally prefer being hard-bodied or soft? Would you in this case take other people's interest at heart and have the same opinions about yourself as to how you'd want others to be?

Lol, tacos.

I'm so much harder on myself than I am on other people. I want to be on the thinner end of (if not thinner than) what I find attractive on other women. But if my husband found thin women grotesque (I'm glad he doesn't), I'd aim for a lesser weight loss goal. But, at least for now, I'm losing weight for health and career issues, not just to look better.

With a little less belly fat, I'd have the body type that I look for in other women. But I want to be smaller than that.

Honestly, I prefer both my men and women to be a little "squishy". But that's just because I find it's easier to cuddle up to someone who's not overly bony or muscle-y.

Motivation What Do You Listen To? Jun 30 2009
01:22 (UTC)

I run on the treadmill so I'm bouncing too much to do something as entertaining as being on the laptop and the tv's directly above my head so I can't see it. So I pretty much just listen to music. I go through my music and find the fastest paced songs I have (yay for metal and techno). Whenever I walk/run outside I have my mp3 player with me too. Occasionally when I'm on the stationary bike, I read a novel. I end up engrossed in what I'm reading so I don't pedal as fast, but I don't notice the time fly by either, so I figure it evens out.

Lol. You obviously don't weigh yourself often enough to see that your weight fluctuates.

I try not to weigh until it's over. Seeing the numbers go up is too disheartening. I made the mistake of weighing this morning (ttom just started) and my weight had jumped up 2 lbs.

Foods prolonging the life of feta cheese? Jun 29 2009

Sorry, I don't know about the block stuff. But if you get certain brands of crumbled feta (like President's) they have natamycin, which is a natural mold inhibitor. I've had a container of feta in the fridge for over a month now, and it's still just fine.

It's scary how easily I could have been that big.

I agree that it's generally the parents' fault. They're the ones that are responsible for buying food, teaching their children how to respond to food and exercise, and keeping their children from just eating whatever they feel like. And a lot of parents are too ignorant or too lazy to make sure their children grow up healthy and active.

Foods Peanut butter is good? Jun 26 2009

Peanut butter is good for you, but like all nuts and seeds, it's a very calorie dense food. But you do have to be careful about which peanut butter you buy. Some of them have a lot of added fat to make them spread better. I get fresh ground peanut butter and add a little honey to sweeten it.

I might try something similar with lime juice mixed in with vanilla yogurt. I just got a package of rice cakes and I love them.

Weight Loss Hi guys, really quick answer- yes or no : ) Jun 24 2009

Yes you do need to eat back the extra calories you burn. You should never have more than a 1000 calorie deficit.

EDIT: You should log those calories into the activity log along with the time period you burned them in, as CC will only add to your burn meter the excess over what you would have burned with normal activity (according to your activity level settings).

Fitness Obese or just really out of shape? My Couch to 1 mile personal challenge Jun 24 2009

I used to think I was too out of shape to run, but I started on the treadmill and have been working my way to a mile. As of this week, I can run a mile without slowing down to a walk. Now I'm trying to increase that to two miles and I'm also trying to get under a 10-minute mile (eventually I'll do both at the same time, lol). If I can be a runner, anyone can.

Foods Question for those of you who are hitting your daily calorie target. Jun 24 2009

Original Post by michellejlr:

I would love to....but then it pushes the individual targets out....like for Fat and Sugar. Can I go beyond these targets and still loose weight if I hit my calorie target (and not go over)?

I hope I'm making sense.

You most certainly can. The other targets are for good health and won't really affect weight loss. I find that when I eat the recommended servings of grains, meat, fruit, veggies, etc. my sugar intake is still over. If the sugar is coming from fruit it's not as big of a deal as it would be if you were to eat that much refined sugar. So try for your other nutrition targets, but they don't have to be exact. You should be more concerned with making sure you're eating enough calories.

I buy all my free-ranged/grass-finished meat products on line! I am addicted to: North Star Bison (http://northstarbison.com) - I trust the woman who owns this farm 100% because she really know what she is talking about!

I only eat 100% grass-fed red meats and let me tell you - her products ROCK! She offers bison, beef, lamb, ostrich, elk, goat, chicken & turkey... And she also has AMAZING shipping deals! Do not delay - go to her site and order away! Tell her GIGI sent you (she'll know who you're talking about! ha ha).

Thanks, but I get this stuff a lot cheaper at the butcher I go to. I couldn't afford it otherwise.

I'm actually a lot nicer online than I am in person. Lol. (partially because sarcasm just doesn't come through when you're typing)

And I stay on topic online (life needs a backspace button). In person I go off on random tangents that have very little to do with anything.
