Foods Peaunt Butter Question Aug 17 2008

Original Post by amanda666666:

I ate some apple slices with peaunt butter spread on them. then i looked at the calories in peter pan peaunt butter and it said 2 tablespoons is the serving size and the calories are 190. But it said the container's serving size is 15. Well it defintiley looks like there are more then 30 tablespoons in that jar. So does that mean that 190 isnt the actual amount for only 2 tablespoons?

And if 190 is the amount for only 2 then is it still ok to eat a lot of peaunt butter because its good protein and fat?

Well, you shouldn't be LIVING off peanut butter but, yes peanut butter is good to have. It is good in protein, and high in healthy fats that are good for you and your heart but be weary of some peanut butter brands adding things other than just natural peanuts. :] Enjoy your peanut butter, but just watch how much you are having! Keep in mind it can add up REALLY fast. Also, I would go more for the actually measurement of serving sizes than just the amount of servings in a jar, better to get accurate measurements than just estimating about one thirtieth of a jar for your serving size. ;-P

Whenever we go to the store my mom insists we buy light, white bread because everyone in my house is dieting. I need more calories throughout the day and I want to start eating more natural foods. What are some good, whole wheat or whole grain (whatever is better), high fiber breads?

I, myself purchase the Roman Meal breads. Before I go off all fan-crazy on it, I'll state out the facts first. It starts off as a medium-calorie bread at the total of seventy calories per slice with a great count of two grams of fiber per slice. Now, going fan-crazy, here are some great things about this bread I really like. First off, it's whole wheat, I checked it like a thousand times and it is made with whole wheat flour. Check the ingredients yourself ;-O. Also, they have a no-HFCS line of breads that they do NOT put high fructose corn syrup in. This is great for two reasons, you are putting less ( yes, I say ) crap into your body along with it being more natural as you wanted your bread you are planning to buy to be. Good luck on your bread buying, make sure to read the ingredients on breads. Breads are most important usually in the ingredients more than the calories if you are wanting to eat natural, they're all around the same calories. Read your profile and I wish you luck and hope for the best!

Weight Loss How to diet and Study at the same time? Aug 17 2008

Original Post by sheilaphysio:

Hi everybody,

I am doing my PhD and I have to finish my thesis in October. I have gained 51 pounds in 5 years. I can not fit in any of my cloths, I keep delaying my diet to November but I am afraid that I will not have any thing to wear if I gain any more pound. I have tried to count the calories that I eat but I can not follow everyday because of my study plan. I would love to hear someone experience about how to deal with the weight gain in situations of stress like that.

Thanks

I'm not nearly to the situation you are in yet, but I do have a couple suggestions that may help you out.

  • First off, I'm guessing you have been gaining this weight from the stress of the study plan and having to do lots of studies and basically no time to be able to do your own thing and just heading off to McDonalds or some other fast food place. What I'd suggest is if you have a good sandwich place, like Subway nearby it could help boost your weight loss without the stress to count. Buy a foot long for five dollars and maybe only eat half for lunch if you are able to and save the other half for dinner. Saved you a trip to MickyD's and maybe a bit of money if you are able to do that.
  • Keep fresh fruit, ready to eat vegetables, nuts, good food to be able to snack on while continuing your studies. When having some free time you might be able to buy these in bulk at a nearby convenience store, grocery store or whatever suits you best. Cutting out pre-packaged processed foods or potato chips might help clean up some of those extra calories you may be consuming while studying.
  • Last, but not least, keep in mind that counting isn't everything to the key to weight loss. You don't have to count but keeping the concept of portion control in your mind is a great thing to do. If you have the free time, look up some of your common dinners, lunches, breakfasts, whatever you eat and see the calories. Then, decide a good number to settle for each meal and you can figure out how much of each thing you should be having. For example, if you usually get a Big Mac with small fries, and you only should have five hundred calories, you can maybe estimate half the big mac and maybe finish up your fries can net you a good amount around five hundred and save the rest you didn't finish for dinner. Estimation is the key.
I wish the best of luck to you on your weight loss and your studies. :]

Weight Loss why did I just gain two pounds? Aug 13 2008

My weight has been bouncing up and down since my last time of the month and I hadn't been very regular if you know what I mean. So, last week I decided I needed more fiber, water, and exercise and increased all 3.  I haven't changed the amount of calories I have been eating still 1200/day but I make sure that I get at least 25 g of fiber each day and drink 8 glasses of water. I have also started to run 3 times a week (half run half walk for now). It seemed to be working I have become really regular once or twice a day but then I got on the scales... I have gained two pounds in one week!!!  I have no idea what is going on. Even my clothes that were becoming loose fit are tighter again. Should I stop eating so much fiber? Or maybe this is a plateau? Do you gain weight when you plateau? Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to get my weight loss back on track?

Are you sure you're eating enough? Some people start out with the 1200 calorie a day diet but once some cardio pops in you may need a little bit more. If you have too much of a deficit your body may be clinging on to every calorie you have and not assisting your weight loss or maintaining goals.

Foods Stuck in the lunch vortex....help!! Aug 12 2008

Hey everyone!!  Just a pretty simple question for you guys....

I'm insanely tired of having just normal sandwiches for my lunches.  I have an office job and rarely any extra money, so I pretty much always bring my lunch with me.  But even when I was trying to buy better bread and add toppings to my sandwiches, they still just weren't cutting it.  I'm TIRED of them. lol

Anyone out there have any suggestions for other things that are good for lunches, but still stay around 300-400 cals a meal?  I'm trying to get back into making myself some salads too, but I can only do so many of those....little cracker sandwiches like Lunchables I wouldn't mind, if there's something a tad healthier.....I'm just kinda stuck.  Even a lunch that I just kinda snack on during the lunch hour would be great, but it's hard for me to think of healthy options with that....

So, any suggestions for any good, reasonably low cal, filling lunches??  :)  I'd sure appreciate any help I can get!!

It may not sound like a lunch but maybe you can make some kind of dip that incorporates some beans for your protein, avocados for some good fats, and some vegetables and you can dip some vegetables into it or spread it upon your bread for a good lunch. :] I do that a lot and if you choose the right foods to pulverize or mix together for your dip, it can be a very good and filling lunch. You can also make some fried rice if you like rice which is always a great choice since you can pretty much add any leftover sausages, eggs or anything leftover from the night before and still make it taste good. Good luck!

As it would seem, I'm new to the community, and I've stumbled upon this webpage as I'm sure many others before me have as well: To adopt a healthier lifestyle, in some way or another.

To begin, I've always been a very unhealthy eater. Influenced by my family, generally, whom are all overweight, I've been eating fried, frozen/microwaved dinners, fast food, etc, with very little fruit, vegetable, and other healthy foods intervening.

I THINK I'm about 150 pounds, and I'm about 5'10". A week ago, I moved in to a new house, and during the entire moving process, for about five days straight, I had nothing but fast food for lunch and dinner, and it made me pretty sick. Sadly, but thankfully, that was the breaking point for me. Now I'm swearing off fast-food, microwaveable dinners, soda, and what-have-you. Now I'm incorporating vegetables, fruit, and hopefully other healthy meals in to my diet, daily, and what once was a life consumed by the computer and videogames, will now be replaced with some planned activity.

I'm a relatively skinny kid. Or at least I appear as such with clothes on, outwardly. I'm slim but chubby - I've got deposits of fat on my lower-back, hips, thighs, butt, etc, that I wouldn't mind burning off - a lot of it is loose skin and such from when I used to be slightly overweight(not sure what offset this.)

Anyhow, my goal is to, oddly enough, gain weight - but lose fat and gain muscle. Soon, in a couple of days here, a friend of mine and I are going to start hitting the gym to see how we like it - and coupled with my new eating habits, I'm hoping to gain some tone and overall, look and feel healthier.

Anyhow, that's a mouthful. Or five. Nice to meet you all. This website and community in general is a very neat idea, methinks. :P

PS: Can somebody offer and tips/hints to get started? I'm a horrible cook, infact I don't know how to, and I'm 18. The rest of my family is unhealthy, and overall overweight, so it's difficult to rely on them, and they never cook dinner, thus I'm usually left with canned and frozen alternatives. Either I need to learn how to cook, and quick - or I need some healthy alternatives. Any suggestions? Thanks. :P

Heh, I didn't really know how to cook either when I started (a bit cheating in a way, I watch my mother work hard at the stove every day with the things she puts in it and how she makes things) but a good way to start is once you know the basics of how to get meat cooked well and know how to do it well, reward yourself with some herbs & spices. Can't go wrong with oregano or basil leaves, smells delicious along with some other herbs that are great additions and very tasty. Experimentation is always great; there are also great sites to find in Google for anyone. :] The internet is a great place. Have fun adopting your new lifestyle, and always nice to see some guys around here. < -- :] Boy speaking right now.

You CAN enjoy what you eat, and you CAN enjoy what you want to eat. Just in moderation. I bet you have heard this a million times and have been befuddled by the word moderation. Moderation can be so confusing at times, but a way to simplify it is that if it fits into your calorie count, go right ahead! Enjoy that sweet tooth of yours, I do the same! You have to enjoy your life!

Also, if you didn't want to count your calories and just want to enjoy what you eat, keep in mind just the concept of portions. If you want a little of this a little of that, go right ahead! If you wanted to try everything, maybe just keep in mind to have a little of each not a heaping serving of each! We all can do that, calories can be a bit monstrous and so tiring at times. So, if you want to enjoy what you want to do, just make sure you know how much you should be getting. ;-)

I LOVE pancakes. Any kind, any type, whatever kind of pancake you set on my plate I'll devour it. But, problem is, all the pancake recipes I encounter are ~500 calories for just a few 4-5! I don't mind mini small pancakes, with pancakes I love quantity over quality, so can anyone shoot me a recipe that will be relatively low calorie for like tons of them, heh? :]

Have you thought of doing crepes instead of pancakes? thin, delicious and very few calories!

Here are some of my own recipes - crepes at 62 kcal each (C+ grade) - these don't have sugar but it can be added (for savory crepes eliminate vanilla), this one is for cottage cheese pancakes at 57 kcal each (C+ grade), and this one is for regular pancakes at 70kcal each (B grade) (not thick)

I add blueberries, strawberries, bananas, etc.. I substitute some of the flour for oatmeal, or wheat flour.. Notice that most pancake recipes call for oil but I never add any.. really not needed.

Edit - PS.. Please note that all my recipes have SOYMILK (light, plain) instead of milk.. and you really can't tell the difference.

Thank you SO much for these recipes! :] -preps for tomorrow's pancake bonanza- I really appreciate it.

thanks!

I'm not an EXPERT at making pancakes, so sorry in advance if I don't have ones you might like hehe. Putting in some cinnamon would be great with your pancakes and maybe if you want some pumpkin pancakes I saw a recipe that added some canned pure pumpkin and some pumpkin pie spice. Vanilla may bring out some good vanilla flavor into your pancakes. Blueberry pancakes are also good, no need to pulverize them in the food processor or mash them or anything, whole blueberries will work fine and dandy along with a good yum into your pancakes. I have heard of sweet potato pancakes along with pecan, it all depends on you. :] Let your imagination on pancakes go wild.

According to CC, bread and toasted bread have the same calories..  Wouldn't a blackened almost burnt peice of toast have less calories? Seems like you could "burn" off the calories.

But a blackened piece of somewhat burned toast may have effected the amount of nutrients that you can find inside it rather than having it heated up and just a bit crunchy. ;-P Or, you can just find a "light" bread if you are really wanting to get to the nitty gritty on your bread calories somewhere around your local markets.

im 160 and i eat around 1200 calories a day

It's most likely you are in "starvation mode" or in a situation where many teens trying to lose weight and sometimes adults encounter when trying to eat so little; when you eat too much of a deficit which you probably are (~1000 deficit). When you feed your body too little and your body goes into shock and it starts thinking, "Woah woah woah! Stop processing all these calories and burning the fat! We're going into a famine or something, store all the fat you can to survive!" Your body does the opposite of what you want to do, it hangs onto every little calorie you have and it doesn't help you one bit trying to lose weight. Your body has adjusted your metabolism and so used to what you have been eating it just wants every little calorie to keep you alive and that's not good at all and won't be helping your weight loss. It's actually hindering it.

What I'd suggest you to do is search around for a TEEN calculator for your daily calories and set a deficit that is healthy (~500 calories). Slowly increase to the desired number, and you will see some pounds gaining, do not worry about these. These will go away soon enough, and you will then see the pounds starting to drop off and make sure you lose them slowly and steadily. If you lose them too fast you might just make them right back. Eat a healthy amount, eat good and you will be much more energized than before of eating 1200 calories (you will see the huge  difference) and doing your body good.

:] Have a nice day.

I like the Fiber One cereal because it is so good and healthy for you, especially the original kind but it made me really bloated and I felt so weird when I was exercising. Probably because the Aspartame flavoring but it is still good and wonderful. :] You can probably have too much fiber but I don't think it would damage much, just make you run to the bathroom one too many times.

My mom is extremely understanding and supportive of my healthy eating. She is very weight-conscious and she tries to be healthy she just lacks some knowledge. She and her boyfriend laugh at me in that "Oh that's her being healthy!" sort of way when I talk about health food, but they certainly try to learn from it. When I'm home from school I always shop with mom to spend time with her, and she's taken to asking me to go through ingredients with her to help her make the best choices which I think is really sweet. She always buys health food for me and her, but I often shop for myself because I have two younger siblings who definitely do not appreciate health food and I feel bad if mom spends more money on me.

My siblings eat terribly. My brother understands why I eat well and doesn't give me a hard time, but he doesn't join. My sister, though, actually complained to my mother the other day saying she was starving because all we had was health food! We all have a really fun, joking relationship though so everything comes out in the wash!

Your family sounds JUST like mine, like, exactly! My mother is a very healthy eater and she never eats the processed and junk things; but occasionally when she makes breakfast for my brother and my father, she makes like banana bread, muffins and things, she usually has one with cereal (etc.) and some other fruit and healthy snack. I go shopping with her a lot and we choose out a lot of healthy food we can cook and I feel terribly bad because a lot of the time she has to pack on double the shopping cart because we eat differently than the other half of the family. Exactly like yours, my brother knows that I eat healthy but he has a stint of eating healthy but he eats what he wants. ;] Nice happy family, eh?

Oh, my father eats basically what he wants. He's a landscaper so he's outside all day, working really hard [he skips lunch] and he eats my mom's homemade cooking and has huge portions of it.

Have fun and I hope it doesn't rain.  I mentioned the Starbucks because I was there a month ago.  It's worth seeing, especially if you like their coffee, and across the street you can watch them throw salmon around.  One thing I really like at House of Hong is sticky rice wrapped in tea leaf.  Wait for a while and it'll show up on a cart.

Hehe, hopefully it doesn't; Washington is starting to cool down and become 'ol Washington again. Hehe, I'm not much into coffee, but their pastries are excellent whenever we get some randomly. Ooh, the sticky rice in the tea leaves are really wonderful; I believe when it was the holiday for that (or so I recall..) I went shopping with my mother and we bought like five at a Chinese market because they weren't going to be made until next year! ;-P

My favorite for dim sum in Seattle Chinatown was House of Hong, but I don't know whether it's still around.  I'd suggest going somewhere else for dessert, maybe down to Pike Place for a coffee drink and a pastry at old #1 Starbucks.

I've eaten a lot of natto in sushi places.  It's fermented crushed soybeans mixed with raw egg and some finely cut green onions.  A lot of people don't like it because it's stringy and has a texture a lot like snot.  The flavor is kind of bland, but it makes a good sushi topping - a little bit like flying fish roe (tobiko?).

Hehe, thank you for the suggestion of the dim sum place, I'll suggest it once we get there; Pike Place or Starbucks sounds wonderful, pastries sound good at the moment. ;] Hmm, sounds interesting; I guess I might search around and find a package. Thanks for the information about natto, haven't got much replies about natto when I asked about it in other places ;P

I'm afraid I can't stop calorie counting though, for some reason I've gotten so addicted or obsessed with calorie counting I just can't get it out of my head; when I do try to get it out, the day I do try to get it out, it just comes right back in the next day or during the day because I keep thinking I'll get fat or something. It's been getting to be part of my lifestyle and getting kind of big in it. :[ I guess I'll try to loosen up a bit; I thank you for your post.

The fact that you're afraid that if you stop counting calories you'll get fat is a bit alarming to me.  At 13, your body still has a lot of growing to do!  Right now, you're only 4'11 and 79-81 pounds, you're inevitably going to gain more weight.  Junk food once in a while is nothing to be afraid of; the obsession with calorie-counting is what is more discerning at this point.

Sorry if this comes off as mean; I don't mean to.  I've just seen way too many people fall into horrible situations because of things such as this and I'd hate to see it happen to more.

I think it just had to start with how realizing how many people around me were getting overweight and I just got a little thing inserted into my mind and it won't get out. =/ I realize I still have growing to do and such, I am not trying to limit my calories and such it's just that I dunno. :[ It's just..Dx

are you serious? if you are 13 and eating only 2000 max, you are going to stunt your growth. you seem very intelligent, so i'm surprised you didn't realize this. your bmi is 16.2. you must eat at LEAST 2600 calories. yeah you might put on a little bit of weight at first, but everyone does when they're your age, and then your body will adjust. you have to put on weight to grow. not just height-wise, either. your brain is trying to develop and you're giving it the amount of calories an adult needs to maintain their weight, not the amount a growing boy needs.

as far as your nutrition goes, don't think about it. seriously. you can eat absolutely whatever you want. i'd advise you to see a counselor, you could have obsessive-compulsive disorder--i have a mild case (it's really more extreme perfectionism) which contributed to my having an eating disorder, so it could be the same with you.

Thank you, I'll try to keep in mind D: I'm starting to get a little looser and looser about my calorie counting and my nutrition after some of these posts and yours too; I'm trying to fix some of my "habits" and I'm trying to loosen up. It's just sticking with me and I'm trying to get it out. Thank you so much for your support; I'm trying to fix it best as I'm able to.

Young Calorie Counters Cheat Days Jul 05 2008

Cheat days are okay! I, myself, treat myself to cheat days about twice a month actually; you may think you gained a lot of weight the next day but it will be okay! Do not worry a bit, you will become okay if you just eat clean and healthy from days on until your next cheat day which will hopefully not be tomorrow, then it will be a problem. Cheat days actually help you, they help relieve some of your stress and your cravings and you probably got so sick and bloating that you probably won't want to have any for days!

Also, here's a good fact to keep in mind. From Tim Ferris's blog, you can read this exact post and he says...

"I recommend Saturdays as your “Dieters Gone Wild” day. I am allowed to eat whatever I want on Saturdays, and I go out of my way to eat ice cream, Snickers, Take 5, and all of my other vices in excess. I make myself a little sick and don’t want to look at any of it for the rest of the week. Paradoxically, dramatically spiking caloric intake in this way once per week increases fat loss by ensuring that your metabolic rate (thyroid function, etc.) doesn’t downregulate from extended caloric restriction. That’s right: eating pure crap can help you lose fat. Welcome to Utopia."

See, it's not all that bad. I had extras too, and I had a little more. Except, way more, than what I usually had. I had about seven bowls of macaroni salad. I felt so sick afterwards, I don't even feel like eating that much again and I feel better eating healthy the next day, don't you? ;-)

Don't worry and just keep going.

I hope this is a joke - your language usage is not at all like a 13-year-old. Just in case, in answer to your questions, you need some starch in your diet - about 55% of your calories should come from carbohydrates. So if you cut out refined carbohydrates, replace them with unrefined things like brown rice, wholegrain cereal, oats, wholegrain bread, etc. Remember that your body needs a bit of sugar for quick energy when you exercise. So fruit is not bad - you can happily have 4 or 5 a day if you want.

In answer to your rant, remember that a healthy lifestyle allows you to have small amounts of 'junk' food. No food is forbidden. Learn to listen to what your body is telling you it needs. Stop calorie counting completely. Go cold turkey - do it all in one go. The first week will be scary. Maybe the second, too. But your body will soon start telling you what it needs - you'll find yourself craving omelette after exercising, or craving fruit to wake you up in the morning. Hide the scale for at least a month. It's so much more fun to just be a kid, and not have to worry about what you're eating.

Hehe, thank you for your reply; I am currently on the computer a lot during the days since it is summer and I practice my grammar and much else, I'm used to typing professionally (or so I think. ;-)). I do have a bag of brown rice my family is finishing up and they'll be happy I'll be finishing it up most likely, my family is mostly Chinese and their main staple would happen to be the ever-so-smelling jasmine rice; I have been including oats into my diet, those regular flavored, instant pack oatmeal you can get pretty cheap at Albertsons. I'll take note of the sugar from the fruit, I guess I might have some fruit during the day anyways; I had some watermelon today but I was just curious about the sugar content and how much I should be having.

I guess that having junk food every once in a while (or at least, eating out in my case, my mother doesn't buy much junk food anyways :-)) will be fine for me. Thank you for your effort to post nicely and politely, I really appreciate it. :] I'll take these tips to mind and hopefully into heart. Have a wonderful summer day, hopefully it won't be as thunder-stormy as in Tacoma, Washington as it has been today. :[ It was horrrible.
