Weight Loss for anyone who has ever doubted starvation mode... Nov 20 2009

I'm 18, currently weigh 132ish, and am 5'4. I want to get to 115 - I've been there before, so I know it's possible! I gained ten pounds from eating 1500 in two weeks...

I exercise when I can - I walk about 2 miles a day on average, do situps, sometimes run around.

I'm eating 1500; I was orignially eating 700-900.

Before I went to college, my parents were my models for how people eat. My father doesn’t eat during the day at all, and my mother is slim, covers everything in butter, but doesn’t eat very much. Eating 1000 calories of fresh food was difficult, because “I was eating so much!”

I went to college and my roommate is my body twin. She is the same weight and height as me, same composition, and eats way more than I do. That’s when I realized that there was a real problem.

I’m on day 14 now, and the scale seems to have slowed down and stopped. I do not know when I should start to cut calories again to lose…

Hey, do you think this is possible for me?

I’ve been in starvation mode for a crazy long time and now am eating 1500 calories... but I really want to lose the ten pounds I’ve tacked on. Is this even possible?

I believe you said, iceprincess, that after 18 days of eating maintenance your metabolism fixed itself – how did you know?

Use the 50% rule. I do not believe in eating anything fake because you "need sugar".

Many processed foods and desserts don’t have a good enough flavor to tempt me… I want the real thing. An apple tartin. Crème brulee. Flourless chocolate cake. Those things are incredibly hard to binge on because they are so rich eating too much makes one insanely sick. A little bit goes a long way, and when your mouth is screaming with mousse and cream, it is actually easier to put the fork down.

So savor. Very slowly. If you love it, there is no need to fight it to lose weight. After three bites our palates are generally bored anyway.

It entirely depends on how long it has been.

I am on day 11 of eating 1500 calories, and in that time frame I have gained 7 pounds.

I had been eating between 700-900 calories for over a year. When it started, I lost a lot of weight quickly, and I was honestly comfortable eating that amount. But, when I ate even a little bit over, my body snatched onto every calorie and stuck it on my thighs. In 4 months, about 7 days of “eating normally” tacked on 15 pounds. Not a huge exerciser, and I’m not a binge eater.  It doesn’t add up mathematically, but that’s what happened.

A lot of this is hunger. I was hungry in the beginning, but eventually I wasn’t. Change and shock cause weight loss, not numbers. When I got used to whatever number of calories, that’s what my metabolism slowed down to match.

I’m in the process of fixing it.

I know my metabolism is damaged, but according to the calculator posted above, 1500 calories is pretty accurate. I'm not the most active person in the world - I walk to class (probably about 2 miles a day) and run in ten minute bursts in my apartment on some days. I can be incredibly lazy and just not move.

If I can maintain on 1500, that is good enough. I don't want to eat any more than that.

I have been at my maintenance for over a week now, and I am finally seeing the scale slow down. I still feel gross and sickly full, but that is to be expected since my body is used to about half the calories. I have heard that I shouldn’t be exercising off too much to the point where my net is at 800 calories either. I exercise when I can (busy college student), and eat really clean already.

You sound like you know what you are talking about! I am beginning to figure out why I put on twenty pounds from under eating, and developed a plan that is healthy to get back to my initial weight. I’m going to eat at maintenance for 40 days to get my metabolism back in order, then cycle in a range of 1000-1200 calories until I’m back. I’ll eat at maintenance a few days just so I don’t mess everything up again, and then eat a higher number of calories once I am at my weight. What do you think?

Weight Loss Frustrated beyond belief Nov 15 2009

It's not really yoyoing when I don't know if I have ever eaten as much in my life as what the calculators keep telling me. My father doesn't eat during the day - it's complicated - so undereating runs in the family. I was a picky eater as a kid anyway, but there is no definitive way of telling how much I ate. All I know is I started to put on weight, stopped eating as much, and eventually found my way to calorie-count.com, when I discovered I was eating about 700-1000 calories a day.

This is day ten of eating 1500 calories. I figure that there has to be something to cut back from if I ever wanted to trim off the ten pounds again.

My stats:

I’m 18, 5’4. I weighed 124 pounds, then shot up to 132. I’m trying to get to 115.

I can only hope, except when I upped my calories in the past to 1700, I gained 10 pounds immediately. I got scared and cut back again and it stayed :(

I'm also attempting to ramp up my calories to 1500 from about 1000. I've been at it for a week and I'v put on 7 pounds. It sucks, not going to lie - I'm praying that it is water weight. Bigger deficets do not equate to bigger loss, only a slow metabolism.

I'm at one week of eating my apparent "maintenance" calories - 1500 - and I've put on 7 pounds. I'm sure most of it's water, but I was already at a weight I was not happy with, and I want to get down to where I was six months ago. I've been told to keep at that level for a while before cutting back, so is this challenge still appropriate?

jrose15, in the 2 weeks did you gain weight like I am? I was eating 800-900 calories a day and actually gaining weight since before hand I was eating 700. I'm lost and frustrated.

Ugh, it seems like maybe I might be hungry in the morning, but at night I feel so incredibly bloated.

I've been eating 1500-1700 calories a day for 1 week, and I have gained 7 pounds. Please - somebody tell me this will go away. I don't exercise very much - I walk to class (sometims like 2 miles a day) and I run in 10 minute bursts.

I'm just like you. If you eat a lot of fresh foods, it is incredibley difficult to get a normal number of calories.

I like to have a bowl of healthy cereal - like Fiber One - with Soymilk. Or granola bars, or a lot of air-popped popcorn. Eating these seriously helps keep you regular :)

These are just some other ideas other than nuts and cheese.

I agree that bigger people eat more than thin people - that is just common sense. However, if you do not eat very much food for a long time (like me), your metabolism slows down to the point of death. You eat a little bit of food to maintain, not lose weight.

It's an incredible phenomenon of the human body to 5'10, approximately 115 pound woman sit down at Starbucks with a venti latte and a panini, and eat it all when that is about how many calories you eat in a day and you weigh 10 pounds heavier at 5'4.. Our bodies are not used to change, and change is the only thing that causes weight loss or gain.

AH! I fit into this category but am so confused about what I am doing wrong and need to do in order to lose 10 pounds!

I wasn't eating enough - I would have a final day's total of 900 calories. Then I increased to 1200 before exercise and maintained. I went to college and despite eating exactly the same I put on 15 pounds quickly out of seemingly nothing. I had a couple days when I over ate, but a couple days of very little eating to balance it out. Nevertheless, the weight stuck.

So now, I'm on a path to eat 1500 calories. Will it work? I don't know. I have no idea. But I am tired of restricting what I eat, especially when I am a fantastic cook.

Any help?

If you could lose weight anywhere on your body where would it be: My thighs and hips

What is your favorite weight loss breakfast: Dish of fruit and plain yogurt

What is your favorite weight loss lunch: Large salad with some protein and balsamic vinegar

What is your favorite weight loss dinner: Chicken Cattatorie (sp?), lots of fresh vegs

What is your weight loss dessert: Fruit

What are your snacks and how many do you eat (times a day): I'm going to try to eat more, but before I ate no snacks. It's just not part of my culture.

What is your indulgent dessert: Apple crisp, creme brulee, ice cream, chocolate

What are the few things that you avoid: Not much, but I *should* stay away from cereal because I eat WAY too much of it sometimes.

What is your favorite workout: I run around in my apartment either playing solitaire or speed-cleaning.

How do you stay motivated: This is so hard for me right now. I have been chronically undereating and gaining weight so motivation is something I need in a tenfold. I'm focusing on eating 1500 calories of food I love and not being ashamed or guilty about it.

Yes, I'm pretty sure I'm accurate - I've been doing this for a while now and have a good grasp since it worked when I was maintaining. I ate very little for a while - probably about 700-900 calories a day as a final total when i worked out. Then around the holiday season I upped it to 1200-1300 and maintained. I tried to cut back to the orignal numbers but my weight stayed the same.

I can go look back at my journal for the two months in college and see that with exercise, I have some days that only totalled to 400 calories. I've been moving a lot and eating the same food - I live in an apartment and cook. I used to eat more at home!

I'm at the point where I am frustrated beyond belief, and feel like since I love to cook for crying out loud I'm just going to eat more and see what happens. I don't seem to follow the natural weight loss laws, so maybe I'm going to see the scale start to tip back down again...

This is what I figured - and I'm hoping that by eating more consistently my body will just level it out. I was quite a bit heavier when I was younger - about 145-155 pounds, but then lost the weight and never regained it. I don't want to end up there again; on my small frame that is way too much. My weight has never distributed evenly, and my thighs and butt go up in size whle my ribs still show...

I'm going to try and eat more, but I have to eat more to lose eventually.  It seems backwards, but gaining a rapid amount of weight quickly makes no sense either.

Edit: And I had my period at about 107 pounds.

I'm right there with you. And unlike the others saying "starvation mode", I'm going to say something practical.

Have you ever heard of Paul McKenna? He has some sensible advice. I can speak from personal experience. When you drive your body hard, for a long time, your metabolism slows down.

Don't plan out meals, aim for calories, exercise if you hate it, or any other sabatoging experience. Just wait until you are hungry. On a scale of one to ten, how hungry are you? Try to eat at a 3-4, stop at a 6-7. Enjoy your food slowly. Eat whatever you like. And stop whenever you might think you are full.

What does this do? Your body is not a calculator. It has an internal system that says: hey, I want food now. It doesn't say at ten o'clock, time for 100 calories. Think of how kids eat - that's natural. Over time, your metabolism fixes itself. When you eat according to a schedule, you override your own natural signals. And when you begin to tune into it, the body will understand and start sending out hunger signals more often. You'll be eating more - we're talking in a while, not immediately - and you'll weigh less! Nobody bossing you around except your own body.

Just trust yourself, seriously.

I think maybe since you were eating such a small amount, then ate a larger amount, your body naturally hung on to it, even when you went back down to 800.

I have similiar problems.

Weight Gain Racing heart after eating Jul 13 2009

Yes. I went to the doctor who didn't explain anything at all, so I did my own research.

When you eat a signifigant amount more than you normally do at one sitting, your body releases a ton of insulin to get rid of the excess energy. It's like when kids get too much candy. I had my heart beat taken mid-attack, and it was up to 130 bpm. Your body is burning off the calories, making your body work harder.

I exercised to bring my heart rate up naturally after this started. Once you do some cardio, it will go away.

I was going to go on about how I had a horrible relationship with food, but instead I should just recommend Paul Mckenna's I Can Make You Thin.

Read it, follow the techniques, because it actually works to stop binges and think about food normally. I had serious problems with this, and even though the tapping seems strange, it works.

Most of my friends are in sports and also don't eat in the morning. I go to a thin school, where it is strange to see somebody overweight instead of the other way around.

Hmmm... my closest friends aren't active at all, but like I said don't eat in the morning. One will have a juice or soymilk, water, wrap with tons of meat and cheese and a cookie but eat only about half. The other brings her lunch, which is a pbj sandwich, applesauce and a sweet. Both are tallish and are healthy.

Some of my friends don't eat lunch or breakfast. They go to the library, and might sneak a muffin in.

The athletes must eat. A cross country runner is extremely underweight and eats bosco sticks, pbj sandwich, and a cookie. Some girls eat two cookies, chips, and pizza and weigh about 98 pounds.

I hate the food, but I'm raised with the three-a-day attitude, so I eat there. I generally get a little bit salad with a little fat-free dressing, fruit, and a water, and I'm 5'4 and about 103 pounds. I can't stomach the grease, especially not when my mom is a chef.

High school sounds horrible, doesn't it?
