Maintaining How hungry should you be before you go to bed? May 24 2009

i think it depends on your routine and what works for your life.. as long as you stay within your daily calories and you arent waking up at 3am to eat, its probably fine either way.

personally, ive gotten into the habit of being a very heavy eater in the morning-early afternoon, and slowly tapering off and having my last meal around 4 or 5. granted, i usually go to bed at 9:30 or no later than 10, but because i eat so much in the morning and my body is so used to that schedule, i dont feel very hungry at night at all. and i sleep very comfortably through the night now. i wake up at 5am pretty much every day so.. that just works for me. i also eat about 6-700 calories with breakfast, and less and less as the daily meals continue.. and a very light dinner usually some fish and vegetables... or a boca burger.. usually no more than 300 calories tops.

congratulations on your efforts paying off!

it would be difficult for anyone to reassure you that you won't gain ANY weight AT ALL by eating sensibly.. what does eating sensibly really mean? without a calorie guideline, who can be sure? you may gain some weight initially while you adjust to maintenance or you may retain water, and i would hate to think youre going to gain back 20 lbs right away and revert to calorie counting because thats where it becomes obsessive.

i would advise you to stick with it and do your best- what i can promise you is that with all that activity in your life, if you eat 'sensibly' by any standards, your weight will stay stable at a place that is perfect and healthy for you and you will NOT gain 20 pounds. if you did you would need to seriously re-examine your definition of sensible eating. so no worries, you'll be fine, and good luck! i hope you are able to stop calorie-counting and still be happy and secure at your new weight. try weighing yourself once a week on the same day at the same time, and unless you see a weight gain OUTSIDE of 5 pounds, stick with it and you should settle somewhere perfect.

good luck!

once, when i was overweight, i had a best friend who was about my height (5'4") and told me she weighed about 120-125 lbs. she was thin. not too skinny but definitely THIN, perfect i thought. it was a great source of jealousy for me all throughout my struggles with weight loss.

i am now fluctuating between 108-112 lbs and have been maintaining within that range for about a year. and not one day has gone by that i have looked in a mirror and saw someone as thin or who looked as good as i thought my friend did.. although from what is reflected back at me through other people's comments and what the scales tell me, i can only assume i am actually probably much thinner?

so yeah, id say it's quite possible that it's just your pre-conceived notions playing tricks on your eyes.

i feel like i wrote that.

like you, i've reached a weight within the spectrum of what is medically acceptable and all that garbage..

but that's not really the point, is it?

i wouldn't wish this **** on my worst enemy... i really hope you and i will find a way back to the people we used to be (and still are at the core) with time. i think we can/will. i think its going to take a long, long, long time... but someday we will look back on this and will barely remember what it felt like. i hope!

i've been there. it never really got so bad that i was doing it more than once a day, and what made me stop was that i (gross) really clogged up our sink/garbage disposal, and it was a horrible and frightening ordeal to try and fix it before someone came home to see what i had done.

after that happened i was too scared to do it anymore.

but i know how you must feel, and what the shame and sadness feel like.. i feel like i am never helpful on here and i wish i knew what the right thing to say is... i hope you know you arent alone and a LOT of people do this- it seems like its this weird unprecedented thing because not many people admit to it or talk about it. but its out there i wish you the best of luck.

i was going through the same exact thing for like 6 months.. always at 330 to 4am.. and i struggled so much with it and tried everything to correct it

and then finally i just thought 'if this is what my body wants to do im just gonna stop fighting it and let it have food at 3am, whatever.. and then slowly (very slowly) it seems to be happening less, or actually just later.. which is nice.. you know, one week it was at 5am.. and now its around 6.

i dont know how helpful this is but i just thought id share. just do what your body is telling you to do and youll be alright i think

i just got off the pill too, about three months ago

i have no period yet, from what i hear this is entirely normal. i have also gained, not quite so dramatically but i've gone from 108 or so to around 111,112 with no outside contributing factors.

from what i've read, this really happens to a lot of people and it can take anywhere from a month to a YEAR for your body to re-regulate. i'm actually incredibly angry with my old doctor for failing to mention any of the side effects of taking/stopping the pill. (the whole time i was taking it, my sex drive was dead, and it is still not back 100% yet). i am now convinced it's a horrible horrible thing and i'm never going back on hormonal bc again. i'm getting the paragard iud.

anyway, the pill is evil, give it some time, you should bounce back.

i think it's a decent balance of protein and carbs.. i eat protein with every meal.. i dont purposely shy away from fat, although i think my diet is low in fat generally. i try to eat 1800 cals/day and i maintain a weight of 109-112 lbs on that amount, i'm 5'4".

today seems to be going well, i'm trying super hard to stay busy and i'm not planning out the day in advance. well, actually i'm at about 1350 cals right now and it's only 11am.. but today has been suuuper boring and at least i have enough left for a light dinner and light snack. here's hoping.

yeah i definitely have the best luck when i plan to have a tonnnn of tiny little meals every 1-2 hours.  it has nothing to do with hunger, in fact i think it gets WORSE the fuller i am.. i just wanna keep on stuffing it in. and once i reach my cal. max, i have nooo problem eating nothing else, no matter how long i have to go. until i wake up every hour at night starving.

well it's another day so today i'm gonna try to be as intuitive as possible and only write things down after i've eaten them, that way i'm forced to be a bit more mindful re: actual hunger.

thanks, thats great advice. i guess i gotta just keep trying! i think maybe it has something to do with the fact that i plan out meals for the whole day in the morning.. and when i see it all written down, i just dive in until there's nothing left.  i dont think i could stop keeping track altogether, but maybe if i write things down AS i eat them rather than all first thing in the AM.

also, my stomach seems to have become slightly distended from all of this- does anyone know if it will go back down if i correct my habits? i find that even in the evening after i havent eaten for several hours, it is stretched out far past where it used to be normally.. i have this permanent baby-bump look.

there were a lot of really horrible things but i think for ME, the two worst were

the incredible cold intolerance/poor circulation (i still deal with this even though i am otherwise healthy) and fatigue

but the WORST WORST thing was

being sooooo constipated that i like, literally would go a week and a half without taking a crap. and when i did, it would be like, nothing. this went on for SO long. i was taking laxatives all the time (not to purge, just to try and go to the bathroom because i was so uncomfortable!) cute huh?

PORTIONS

Plain and simple. Go ahead and by your bag of fattening chips. As soon as you get them home from the grocery store, portion them out into your own snacksized portions. Do the same with anything you binge on. For me I have to do that with all snacky foods, but it works. Your eyes sometimes have a bigger appetite than your stomach as they say.

i second this! my biggest problem is cereal, and although i try not to count my calories TOO obsessively anymore, i always measure out my cereal.. because while for most people a serving is like, a bowl lol... for me i'll use a GIANT bowl and fill it til its practically overflowing. so i measure out a generous serving and just make sure to budget it into my daily calorie allowance. you gotta just let yourself have a little bit of what you want. satisfy your cravings (within reason) or else you'll go nuts.

if you must weigh yourself do it first thing in the morning, before you eat. my weight always is a few pounds higher at the end of the day than at the beginning. i prefer to look at the flattering number. also for some reason it's higher after a workout.. i have no idea why, someone explained it to me once but i forget the physiology behind it. the end-of-the-day weight just discourages me, and probably needlessly because i think its usually just water weight or bloat.

I had a rough week too.  I had been doing well for a while and all I wanted this week was crunchy sweet cereal.  I went overboard with frosted flakes and frosted mini wheats.  There are more frosted mini wheats in the cabinet and they are calling my name right now.

i say go for it. today all i could think about was alpha bits, so i went out and got some and had a generous bowl for lunch.. and i didn't go overboard the rest of the day. even though that's like more sugar than youre supposed to eat in a day in one sitting.. im trying to give myself some slack during this time. i definitely find that if i just give in to the craving a LITTLE bit, im less likely to go nuts on some all out binge later.

you're totally right about just giving in..moderately. i learned this lesson a fwe days ago, when i really wanted a bowl of cereal for dinner, but since i had already had one that day, i didn't let myself, and i had something more balanced instead - and then later that night i gave in anyway and had 3 bowls! whereas if i had just let myself have it in the first place i probably would have satisfied the craving.

me too, since i started eating healthfully i have settled at about 110, 111ish. and i greatly prefer the way my body looked at 103 pounds. but.. i try to tell myself that if this is where my body clearly WANTS to be with a healthy diet and exercise regimen in place.. then i guess i have to accept that.

sometimes i think id rather be as thin as i was even though i felt like crap mentally and physically and was very sick all the time.. but at the end of the day, this is so much better. i think you should listen to your body because it's going to try to do whats best for you despite your efforts to fight it.. and if it wants to be 113 pounds (which is pretty darn light) my guess is you look great at that weight.

Health & Support Question about my ED Nov 16 2008

i totally get what you're saying. i never really will admit to anyone or myself that i have or ever have had an "eating disorder" officially, whatever that means.. i think it falls under the category of 'disordered eating'.. so stupid lol. either way its bad for you and a horrible trap to fall into. but anyway..

i never hid behind big baggy clothes either.. on one level i always thought i was fat, even when i was like barely more than 100 pounds, but i think on another level i knew i was getting pretty skinny.. because people would constantly comment about it.. and i liked it a lot but it would scare me too. i went to great lengths to like.. hide the evidence that i was doing anything weird or unhealthy, because i didnt want people to think i was crazy, and i most certainly didnt want a bunch of weird attention..

i dunno. all im saying is that i get what you're saying. if that means that you didn't fit perfectly into the criteria for an eating disorder.. then you didn't. either way, it's good that you're not doing it anymore. like i said, "official" or not, it sucks and you suffer.

i go through that too.

i just make sure i get exercise 3 days a week, period. that's it. that gives me the freedom to have "lazy days". ideally, i'd go sunday, tuesday, and thursday. but say on tuesday im exhausted after work. ill just go wednesday and friday instead. and if i realllllly dont feel like going to the gym, i try to go ice skating or go for a long bike ride with my boyfriend.. just something that breaks a sweat for like an hour counts to me.

and.. if all else fails and you skip a workout here or there.. just let it go, forgive yourself, and remember that tomorrow is another day. try to remember that you're trying to make a lifestyle change, and that in the grand scheme of your new life of healthy eating/activity.. one day isn't going to kill you or throw you totally off. =) hang in there.

when i first upped my calories i gained and bloated a lot. stick with it because my weight seems to be settling down now where it wants to be. it hasn't changed in a while. just get healthy exercise and eat a variety of healthy foods and your body will settle at a weight where it feels comfortable and healthy- and youll look great. just give it time. and remember.. you have to give your head time to catch up too. at first i freaked out at every 1/4 pound i gained... just HANG IN THERE. =]

if you truly are that weight despite eating plenty of healthy nutritious calories daily (check out your daily calorie needs on one of the online calculators to be sure), then don't worry about it. although it truly wouldn't hurt you to put on just a couple of pounds, if that's just the way your body works then you can't help that. just be healthy. they might be jealous, their perceptions of what constitutes a 'normal' weight might be off...

when i was seriously restricting, my weight was only slightly above where yours is, and my family and friends made comments to me just like that. the only difference is, i didn't always look like that and it clearly was not just the natural state of my body. so i would just advise you to be careful and really just make sure you're getting all the nutrients you need. to be fair, i have to admit- when i was around your weight (and i am 5'4" also) i thought i felt fine and i was hugely in denial about my weight and health. when i look at pictures from that time, i honestly look skeletal. and i had a myriad of health problems that i tricked myself into *accepting* as normal. they weren't. just make sure you're really being honest with yourself...

Health & Support my scale and my ed Nov 09 2008
13:26 (UTC)
5

hey,

you know, i think after my experiences with food and weight issues, one of the most important things i'm learning is that balance and moderation is the key. to everything.

the scale can be a helpful tool in your recovery, and it sounds as though you are aware of how important it is to get better (since you have started eating more etc), but there is a fine line between using it as a tool to monitor your health and using it to facilitate obsessive patterns/behaviors.

i used to weigh myself every day, almost every hour. now i make sure i only weigh myself every sunday at the gym. it's good to weigh yourself once a week to monitor gains/losses before they get out of hand, but if you're weighing yourself too often, those changes are likely due to water weight, a full stomach, bloating, any number of things. any gain or loss under five pounds shouldn't be something you worry about since it could be as simple as water weight and is likely a temporary fluctuation.

that being said, if you find that you have a hard time limiting your use of the scale, and that it really stresses you out and hinders your recovery, then i suggest putting it away altogether (for now.) if you're going from starvation to eating a somewhat normal diet, your body is going to go through huge changes, physically and psychologically. you have to give your body time to adjust and level out, and try not to freak out at every fluctuation.

i hope this was helpful? i know it can be very hard, but just try to trust yourself and i ASSURE you, if you're only eating 1300 calories every day, you are NOT fat or going to get fat, that would be literally impossible. so good luck. =]
