Pregnancy & Parenting Old Wives Tales: Baby Gender Sep 25 2009

Thank you all so much!!  I think, according to everything posted, it's a boy!  For example:

The ring circled over my belly (although I was holding it, not someone else);

I look great (my complexion does anyway)--my beauty has not been stolen;

Baby's heart rate is usually in the 140's (although that seems to be controversial, as irishmum and bier have two different theories);

I'm carrying all out front, and low-ish;

No morning sickness;

My right breast is bigger than my left (but I've been inbalanced like that since puberty, in all fairness!); and

I'm craving salty foods, especially cheese.

The little one is very, very active, but I'm not sure that indicates gender either way.  Anyway, I'll have to let you all know once the baby comes (which won't be until February).  Thanks again!!

Hi!

Well, I have noticed that I get VERY winded VERY easily now, which never  happened before I was pregnant.  I have to take lots more breaks too.  I am almost 20 weeks, and it just keeps getting harder!!

One thing no one told me until recently is that you're not supposed to get your heart rate above 140 when you're pregnant, 150 max.  Before I knew that, I'd push it a lot harder and find myself feeling exhausted and miserable after a workout.  Not only that, something that used to barely raise my heartrate really pumps it up now.  Do you wear a heartrate monitor emilysmi?  If not, just make sure to check your heart rate here and there when you're exercising, because I feel much, much better after a workout if I push it but not beyond the 140-150 heart rate range.

Oh, and congrats!  When are you due?

 I didn't know that about the heartrate!! I am glad you told me. I am due march 17th so I am about 13-15 weeks (I can't ever keep track.)

 I didn't know that either (until I was about 16 weeks), even though I asked my doctor about working out a number of times.  It's made a huge difference though now that I know!  For what it's worth,  you're about 4 weeks behind me, so I think you're about 15 weeks :)

Congrats nycgirl!!!  I was hoping that was why you were asking :)  Aside from an elevated heart rate and waking up to pee a lot, I had NO pregnancy symptoms until 7 or 8 weeks.  Eventually my breasts got tender and started gaining weight, but I haven't had too many symptoms even to this day (I'm now 17 weeks).  Enjoy this time, and I hope all goes well for you.  Keep us posted!!

PS--I'm in NYC too!

I am just 12 weeks now, but here were my earliest symptoms (before I even knew):

1) While at the gym, my heart rate got VERY high very easily and didn't come down as quickly as normal (this was beyond weird for me;

2) I woke up to pee one night probably about 5 times (which I never, ever do); and

3) Once I got up to pee, I had a hard time falling back to sleep (also unusual--I sleep like a rock!!).

But otherwise, I had NO symptoms at all.  Not until about 7 weeks, at which time my IBS decided to act up and I could pretty much only eat cheese, carbs, fruit and milk.  Oh, and sweets and fried stuff--woo hoo!!!  Now I'm having very few symptoms again--my boobs are big, I'm bloated/showing a little, and I get worn out at the gym more easily than before--but otherwise I feel great!!

Safina,

I hate to generalize, but that IS the mentality at Equinox!!!  They are quite elitist there, and, even though SHE could not afford to spend that kind of money on personal training, she was sort of trying to intimidate you into doing it.  I don't think her statement should ruin your day, but it is off-putting and condescending.

If you want, I can give you the names of my former and current trainers, both of whom would train you on a private basis for much less, I'm sure.  I can also give you the name/info for a trainer at my gym who does classes in Central Park twice a week during the week (Thursdays and one other day) and Saturday mornings for $10 a class.  He's a great trainer, and since the classes are small, he would definitely take the time to help you with your form (and kick your ass while doing it!!).  His weekday classes are resistance-type conditioning classes and his Saturday class is like a boot camp (sprints, stair climbing, bench jumping, etc.).  Lots of fun, outside, and great workouts.

I do think trainers add a lot of value to working out (I only use one once a week, but he pushes me SO hard and gives me great new ideas that I can use when I'm not with him), but do think $120 an hour is steep.  You have to make the decision that works for you, so ultimately it's up to you, but I understand why you think that woman is annoying now!

Good luck!!

Pregnancy & Parenting "Children 'should sleep with parents until they're five'" Jul 15 2009

I was a kid who slept in my parent's bed.  I think it began when I was about 18 months old, when I started climbing out of my crib (which scared the heck out of my mom!), and continued until I was about 4, when my parents bribed me with a goldfish to stay in my own bed (which worked).  However, I would still sleep with them when I was sick up until who knows what age (I was really sick right before I had my gallbladder out when I was 19, and slept in their bed one night even then).

I am now a very independent and well-adjusted adult.  As a child, I always LOVED sleeping at friend's houses and begged my parents to send me to sleep-away camp at a very young age, and absolutely loved it--never had any trouble adjusting to other locations/bedrooms.

Even now (I am almost 34), if I go to visit my mom without my husband (my parents are divorced now), I sleep in bed with my mom.  We watch tv, giggle and pass out.  And I intend on doing the same with my kids.  But it is a personal preference, and I think when you were raised to stay in/out of your parent's bed, you most likely follow what your parents did with you.

Weight Loss I need a new direction Jun 24 2009

Another thing to try is just creating less of a deficit.  You said your is and has been 600-700, which is pretty high.  Bump it down to 400-500 for a couple weeks and see if that does it.  If it doesn't, then eating at maintenance for a little while is probably your best bet.  I've read a lot about zig-zagging on here as well (if you run a search in forum topics, you'll find quite a bit).  The idea is to have an average amount of calories for the week, but don't eat the same amount every day (for example, if you wanted to eat 11,200 for the week, which is 1600 a day on average, you could eat 1400 one day, 1800 another day, 1500 one day, 1700 another day and 1600 one day, or something along those lines).

Also, take a look at your exercise routine.  How long have you been doing it?  If I don't change my routine every 2 months or so, me and my body get bored and I start to make less and less progress (law of diminishing returns??).  So you may want to consider changing your routine instead of, or in addition to, messing with your diet.

Basically, confusing your body does good things, so create some confusion!!

Foods low fat/ff ice cream alternatives Jun 23 2009

Ok, I have multiple suggestions (sweet tooth anyone?  LOL!!)

Edy's makes two kinds of light ice creams: fully loaded and slow churned 1/3 less fat (http://edys.com/main/index.asp?b=105 check out the "Loaded" and the "Fun Flavors" tabs).  You have to look at the nutrition info so you don't accidentally buy the full fat ones, but a 1/2 cup serving of these ice creams is 120-150 calories and they are AMAZING.  They have cookie dough, cookies and cream, etc., and they regularly have limited edition flavors (a few months ago it was girl scout cookie flavors, so they had a thin mint one and a samoas one.  Now they have a drumstick flavor that has pieces of ice cream cones and chocolate covered peanuts--YUM!!).

For indivually wrapped items, I find that most of the Weight Watcher's ones are the best.  They have a Giant Cookies and Cream bar that is SO good (and only 140 calories) and good ice cream sandwiches.

I also do a variation on the ice cream sandwich kbattiato mentioned.  Instead of using graham crackers, I use Quaker mini chocolate rice cakes.

Ok, that's all I can think of right now...

I wound up getting my period on Friday (April 24th).  After all that!!!  LOL!!  I think my body was messing with me because it was the first month I had ever tried getting pregnant.  In fact, just when I thought I might actually be pregnant, and decided to make a doctor's appointment to get a blood test, my period came.  Oh well--period is almost over now, so I can get back to the fun part...trying ;)  Good luck to you--let me know how you make out.

Hi lyndseyduck!!

You know, I keep hearing stories like this!!  They say those tests are SO accurate, but clearly they are not 100%!!!  My period was due April 12th and I still don't have my period.  The last test I took was Saturday (negative).  I'm going to the doctor next week if I still don't have my period.  Did you just keep testing and testing?  Or did the doctor do a blood test for you?  CONGRATS on your pregnancy!!  How very exciting for you :)  Thanks for sharing your story with me...and keep your fingers crossed that I have the same result as you!

Thanks bean.  I am trying to remind myself that everything in my life has happened when it was supposed to and how it was supposed to, so baby making will hopefully go the same way.

I took another test this morning--negative again--but still no period.  I guess I'll call my doctor if I don't get it soon.  Hopefully it's just stress, and the negative test today will quiet my mind down and allow my period to come.  Thanks again for the response.

Hi!

Thanks for the input everyone!  For some reason I wasn't notified of the responses yesterday, and was busy so didn't check.  All interesting stuff.  I still don't have my period, and haven't taken another test yet.  I kind of feel like I am having period symptoms today (I feel bloated and maybe a little crampy), but nothing has happened yet.  I wonder if I am like bean_7...like my body is just messing with me.  My "dad" (not my real father, but like a surrogate to me) is an OBGYN, so I'm going to call him tonight if I still don't have my period to have him explain all of this to me from a medical perspective (and to see how long I should wait before taking another test).  I am a little scared to take another test because the negative tests bummed me out  (which they shouldn't I guess, because we just started trying this past month, but they did!).  I don't want to get all bummed out again by a negative test :(  Wahhhh!!!  Thanks again for all the responses!!

Edited to add: How do you stop worrying about trying to conceive?  I'm really new to this, and find that it occupies my mind a lot.  Any suggestions?

Very helpful bier, thank you!!

What is the name of the other, similar topic?  I'd like to read up on this.  I don't want to trick myself into even remotely thinking I could be pregnant if I'm not (I don't want false hopes that I've had a false negative!!), but at the same time don't want to do anything silly in case I am.

I appreciate the input!

randibeth--so you were not pregnant when you tested negative, but then got pregnant after a skipped period?  Just trying to clarify.  Also, had you ever skipped a period before?

Thanks for the response binski82.  I was under the impression they were fairly accurate if used anytime after a missed period.  But I've never tried this before, so I have no idea--lol!!

Thanks.  Anyone else???

Do you  have a Planned Parenthood in your area?  Call them and go there if you can.  I don't think a doctor's office can refuse treatment even if you're 16.  I've never heard of such a thing.  Planned Parenthood will not refuse treatment.

I've gone from working out every day to 6 days a week and now down to 5.  My progress has been virtually the same, but the extra sleep has been great (I work out in the early morning)!!  So I would recommend doing 5 days hard core and then taking two days off.  I don't take off two days in a row (I take Sundays and then Wednesday or Thursday off).  If you're tired, your workout isn't going to be very good, so you're better off resting.

Congrats!!

I am so glad you have a supportive boyfriend and best friend.  Support is the most important thing.  You sound like you have a very, very good head on your shoulders, and the motivation to succeed in life, so I am confident you will!!  As I mentioned, I have never been pregnant, but I did go back to school to become a lawyer later in life and I can tell you that classmates of mine were pregnant and mothers, so it can be done!!  Especially if you have that support.

In the meantime, definitely take a prenatal vitamin (I've heard there's a very good one at Whole Foods, but it doesn't have omega 3 in it, so you need to take that as well), do the best you can with the eating (as long as you don't eat any raw food, and limit your fish intake, you'll be fine!) and get lots of rest!!  The doctor will tell you what else you need to do/not to do when you go there.  Best of luck!!

Now that I've read this post, I need to know too!!  I've never been pregnant, but can say that I had a scare with my boyfriend (now husband) in college, and as soon as I peed on the stick (from the test), I wiped and my period magically appeared!!  Good luck!!!!

Hi!

I have a foot injury that is on the mend right now, but I've been out of commission for a while.  Here are three things that I've done to pass the time: (1) "knee boxing"--I either get on my knees (on top of a box/step at the gym), throw on some gloves and punch a boxing bag or just hold some light free weights and punch the air--keeps you totally off your foot (use the step/box so you are on your knees and your feet are off the edge, otherwise you'll end up pressing on your foot.  And use a mat or towel to pad your knees!!); (2) weight lifting (for upper body/abs only!!).  I have always been a weight lifter, but i really kicked it up since my injury.  Just discovered a way to make it really hard too--get a Bosu ball, ball side down, and do all your weight lifting on your knees on the ball.  Gets the heart rate WAY up and works the core too!; and (3) swimming.

I know exactly how you feel--it's so frustrating being injured!!  But just be overly anal about using your foot as little as possible until it gets better so that the injury heals as fast as possible.  Don't bother with the bike, elliptical or anything, as all that weight pressing on your foot will just prolong your injury.  Be creative and modify things and you can get back to running sooner!!  Feel better!!

Yeah, and people never seem to know when to use "and I" versus "and me."  I see this constantly!!  My mom taught me a trick about how to do this correctly--just take out the other person you're talking about, and the sentence will still make sense once that other person is removed.  In other words, if I want to say, "My mother and I went to the park."  I can check it my removing "my mother."  "I went to the park" still makes sense.  It wouldn't make sense to say, "My mother and me went to the park" because "Me went to the park" is nonsensical.  That one gets to me!!  But I think it's because my mother-in-law is always correcting my hubby and his brothers with that one, so I'm hyper sensitive to it.

And I just re-read this and realized that I am such an old fuddy-duddy.  Ahhhhhhh!!!!

i think the fact that your even eating fruit is great,why weigh it is what i wanna know, weigh the food thats gonna actually make you gain weight .im sure your not (i hope) eating 10 Bananas in a sitting i never really hear of people getting fat off of fruit so give your self a break as long as its a snack, you should allow your self about 2 (depends on person) 100 cal or under snacks

 I'm being really anal right now about weighing everything because I hurt my foot and am very limited in my exercise.  I saw how easily the weight was creeping up after I hurt myself (I have been injured about 5 weeks), and I'm trying to limit that.  Even though bananas are healthy, a calorie is still a calorie and I need to be careful right now.  Trust me--I am not short-changing my calories by any stretch of the imagination (I eat about 1900 a day).  Just trying not to gain weight while injured!!!

Thanks for the input.  I have had it about 5 weeks now, not a week (I am leaving on vacation in a week and a half), and have been popping Advil, icing it (heating it made it stiff, and the doc said to ice it) and have forced myself to do NO cardio except box while on my knees (don't ask--it gets the heart rate up and puts no pressure on the foot!!  LOL!!).  I live in NYC, so I have to walk a bit, but other than commuting and a little weekend shopping I have been staying off the foot completely (and wearing flat shoes, which I hate, but ok!).  I emailed the doctor this morning and he recommends that I get a Swedo (it's an anke wrap thing that will go around my foot as well).  I'll give it a go.  Thanks again for the responses!!

I think yogurt (as you mentioned) or pumpkin (as vron mentioned) would be your best bet.  Sometimes you can find frozen pumpkin or butternut squash puree (butternut squash is very similar to pumpkin), so if you don't have the canned kind you might have that.

My only other two suggestions (and I haven't tried either, so I have no idea how they would work): (1) low fat mayonaise; or (2) fat free or low fat salad dressing.  I saw both of these things suggested elsewhere on CC, but again, have never tried either.

Good luck and let us know what you use and how it works!

Kiwi skins definitely do not look appetizing, but they are really good (I'm sure you don't believe me--lol!!  It's ok...most people find it odd).  I don't peel fruits and veggies unless I have to (I recently heard about a friend eating the skin of a mango--not sure I'm that adventurous!!).  I don't eat my bananas at home during the week (I eat them in transit), so one of these weekends I'm going to have to weigh the banana without the peel to get a better idea of how much banana I am eating.
