Weight Loss Counting Calories vs. Weight Watchers.. I need to choose and I want your help Jul 15 2009

Original Post by clairelaine:

The problem I ran into with the Weight Watchers plan (4 different times) was losing my 10% then hitting a plateau I couldn't break.  When the instructor would imply that I must not be sticking to the plan, first I'd try to eat less, then I'd give up and gain it back.

Now I know that a big downfall for me is undereating and starvation mode.  I just wasn't getting the calories I needed on Weight Watchers, and I certainly didn't get the advice and guidance I get here.

Clairelaine, you seem to have had the same experience(s) that I did when I gave WW a try. The first time, I lost 30 lbs and then plateaued ... then gained it all back plus some ... then lost 20 on WW ... then plateaued ... then gained it all back to end up the heaviest I've ever been (205). I never knew, until joining CC and educating myself on nutrition, that I wasn't getting enough calories or nutrients when following WW points system. Now I do, and NOW I can eat enough to stay satisfied while continuing to lose weight (aside from a 4 week plateau that've I've already gotten over).

My vote is for CC - you become more educated about nutrition in general and you have a better chance of learning and keeping healthier habits. Good luck!

Fitness Gwenyth Paltrow's trainer says not to lift heavy?? Jul 14 2009

Hey there,

I was watching Oprah and it had a segment on Gwenyth Paltrow and her trainer Tracey Anderson(?). She says that women should never use weights for their arms heavier than 3 pounds. To use bands and body weight so as not to bulk the muscle.

That goes against what everyone on CC says and also many PT's that I've talked to. But you have to admit that Gwenyth looks fantastic Her arms have really nice definition without looking big or bulky. She looks thin and fit.

What do you guys think? I ask because when I do lift heavy, I find that I do tend to start looking rather thicker not lean. That's with a high calorie deficit and plenty of proteins.

Anyone care to help? I feel confused !Undecided

Thanks.

That trainer is an idiot.

Fantastic book! I bought it in January and it's been super useful.

Just as a testimony as to the results of lifting ... I had to stop running (bad knee) or even doing anything on the treadmill, about a month ago. So, I started lifting again (it'd been a little while) 2-3 times per week, hooping, and jumping rope (doing HIIT 2-3 times/week) and that is IT. NO traditional cardio. I've lost more weight in 3 weeks of that routine than I did with months of running and I've noticed results in just that 3 weeks!

Is it soley due to lifting? Is it because I hula hoop like a madwoman now (I love it)? Is it the HIIT that I didn't start until I couldn't run anymore? My eating (which has been super good, at least 6 days/wk)? A combo of all of them? Who knows, but I'm seeing results AND spending less time working out, so I'm stickin' with it!

My doctor constantly tells me he wants to see me at 1200 calories.

.....

I'm 21, 5'10, male and currently 289lbs. I get about an hour of exercise per day.

Get a new doctor.

Yeah, my sentiments exactly. You're an adult male - even if you were at your optimum goal weight, you should be having AT LEAST 1500 calories per day, and THAT is if you do nothing but lay there still, just breathing, 24x7. Though you want to lose weight, you need to adjust your calories way up to support a quick metabolism for your 5'10, 289lb frame. The fastest way to NOT lose is to eat too few calories. Even if you don't feel like you're "starving" you could be tricking your body into thinking it is ... then comes the true lack of hunger, because your metabolism has slowed down so much ... then the stall in weight loss ... then the fast gain once you start to give your body back what it needs. No bueno.

Trader Joe's Vanilla Soy Protein Powder and 8 oz. skim milk ... usually after I work out. 203 calories & 33.3 grams of protein (combined), and if you add a couple packets of Splenda it's deeeee-licious.

Yeah I'm sure if someone you knew or loved passed away you'd want someone to make insensitive comments such as this about them. Grow up.

I'm not too concerned that Michael Jackson's loved ones might see my insensitive comments here on the ol' CC.com forums.

Now, why don't you and all the other delusional superfans come on back down here to reality. People are dying every day ... all around the world, due to unnecessary wars, in fights for rights, of extreme povery. A CHILD DIES EVERY 3 SECONDS from lack of clean water to drink. I wish there was an outcry for THOSE people like there are for celebrities.

We all have the right to feel exactly as we do about Jackson, but I gotta say that as shocking as this is, I don't feel anything at all. The guy was SO screwed up ... I know he was found "not guilty" for molestation ... but c'mon, people, COME ON!! He paid parents off in the past to keep their mouths shut and god only knows what he really did! I will say that it's sad that such a pop culture icon was so screwed up that there probably isn't a single one of us who could fathom what it was like to be him ... but still. Being that he was pretty screwed up, I'd bet he was self-medicating for a long, long time. He was also training with Lou Ferrigno to get in shape for his sold-out 50-date tour coming up, so who knows, maybe that had something to do with it.

People tend to turn the dead into saints, regardless of whether it's deserved, just because they died (something we ALL will do, let's not forget), and it turns my stomach to see people doing this already. Ugh. Good riddance.

Sadly, HIS death will overshadow Farrah's in the media.

Sadder still, Cris Angel (the world's biggest bag-o-douche) is still alive and well. HA! (Sorry, I got a little too morose for my own good, had to throw in a zinger).

OH, and those of you who will think I'm a horrible, cold, inhuman bitch because of my comments ... remember, I've got the right to feel that way, just as you have the right to think that of me. Oh, and if that doesnt' do it for ya, I coud give a rat's ass anyway! ;-)

Oh, Crazy, that just blows! Completely understandable, the way you feel, I'd be right there too if I were in your shoes. In fact, I'd be crawling up my hubbies ASS to the point of annoying MYSELF if I were in your shoes ... though that usually doesn't get me anywhere if I'm in a similar situation. Sigh.

Maybe you could subsitute a body-weight strength training workout until you can get back in the gym? I've done a couple of the ones at Train With Me Online http://www.trainwithmeonline.com/) ... at least you'll burn some calories and not feel like you're just sitting, right?

Good luck to you. :-)

My pastor in MD said that "you teach people how to love you by how they see you treat yourself and how you allow them to treat you". That statement really helped me grow up.

cellotlhicks, thanks for such a wonderfully positive post. I think no matter where we are with how well we treat ourselves and treasure ourselves, we all need to be reminded of this occasionally. We truly are our own most precious resource andt he only way to truly love others and to be truly loved is to start by loving ourselves (regardless of the things we've done in the past or how we feel about them). It takes longer for some than others, but the important thing is that we realize we are worth it and that we move in that direction.

change_in_sc ... thanks for that quote, it's quite powerful. I think I must steal it and put it somewhere that I'll see it all the time. Smile

Here's hoping everyone has a fantastic day!

Fitness Can I do both? Jun 24 2009

You may find that, eventually, you can completely replace running with HIIT - for weight loss. HIIT, in it's true form, is very intense and can burn a LOT of calories as well as put a LOT of stress on your body (especially your heart), so if you're just starting to run or you're in the beginning phases of working out altogether, don't overdo it. :-) Good luck!

Hi Kyla! I tried an S-Factor (pole fitness) class and loved it - the actual "warm-up" (45-minute cardio workout) was fantastic except that I've got bad knees and you put so much of your body weight on your knees that by the 3rd class it was nearly impossible for me to do the workout or any floor moves. It not only hurt while in class, but my knee (it hurt both, but my main 'bad' knee was mostly affected) would swell for 2 or 3 days after. Total bummer. :-(

Enjoy the class, though, it's very empowering to be using your sexy to get in shape and feel strong ... set's off an awesome chain reaction: feel sexy while getting stronger, stronger 'cause you feel sexier, then sexier 'cause you're feeling strong ... good stuff!

(crazydiamondchrysalis, you friggin' crack me up!)

Kitty, that was quite uncalled for and very unintelligent. Just thought I'd say it.

Do me a favor kitten, before you get to taking yourself so seriously that you can't resist the urge to chastise me, define two words for me:

   1. blasphemy

... go ahead, I'll wait here while you look it up at Dictionary.com ...

   2. sarcasm

Now that you know what both words mean, I'm sure you're feeling quite foolish about misjudging my little JOKE.

Now, go get yourself some tofurkey and text your MySpace friends about the new sticker book that mommy just bought you ... then its of for a nap so you don't get cranky at your play-date later.

Good night and have a pleasant tomorrow.

I don't know if it helps any, but I feel your pain at having to use the bathroom so often.  I've always been that way; I have a gerbil bladder (TMI, I know!).

Girl, you almost made me spew my water (I'm on 24 oz tumbler #4) out of my nose and onto my keyboard with your gerbil bladder comment ... friggin' funny!

Well, I will say that when I weighed this AM, I was down over 2 lbs from last week and I have a feeling that it's flushing my system well enough to battle any little bloat I may incur, so at least there's that. :-) Kassy4, thanks for the link!

Also, stumptuous.com.

Starting Strength is a good book to get to explain the nitty-gritty of the basic moves (including deadlifts and squats)

You said it, Amethystgirl! I just discovered Stumptuous and am in love, and NROLFW is amazing.

Another good resource for learning proper form and a tone of different exercises is Train With Me Online - over 800 videos for strength training exercises, it's totally free and you can download the videos to your PC, PDA or smartphone (or iPhone). You can also put together your own workout routines and save them, track your progress, and they have a ton of ready-to-use programs as well. It's been extremely helpful to me as I learn the proper form. Great site!

Oh dang, then that explains it! I know most people lose a lot more per week during their first couple of weeks, and if you were eating that much previously then went downt o 1500, that's completely logical that you'd lose that much at first. Congrats, by the way, and here's to staying motivated! :-)

Because you are incorporating strength training into your routine, you will most likely see good, pretty consistent results if you are consistent all around with your eating and level of activity.

I can somewhat relate to your limitations, as my knees no longer let me trail run (which I love) or do anything else that will impact them. I now lift and do HIIT with a jump-rope (a fraction of the impact on knees as you lift yourself maybe 1" off the ground, but super challenging cardio-wise) 3 days per week, as well as hula-hoop for 45-60 minutes as many days per week as I can find the time. It's only been 2 weeks of this routine, but I'm already seeing results. :-)

So keep it up, and you're sure to see results. Good luck!

Thanks, MeganR, I think I'll just bite the bullet and invest in a good HRM. I'll probably increase my intake by 200, too, and use that on a post-workout protein shake or something (I know of a few good ones).

uk_babe,thanks for your input as well. The increased hunger I'm feeling usually hits between 2pm - 5pm, then again about an hour or so after I eat dinner. I'm not exhausted after working out, though I am breaking a sweat. I think you're on the right track that I may need to just get some good recovery food into me right after my workout, instead of waiting until I eat dinner (which is usually an hour or so after).

Anyone else out there had issues with whether or not the CC.com burn meter is telling the truth or not? Anyone had it actually affect their weight loss or maintenance?

Not sure what Floggingsully's answer will be, but it seems really ... awkward. I do side crunches, side planks, and side plank hip raises (I mix 'em up) but on the floor. For the side crunches, I use a stability ball and for the plants, well, that's kinda obvious. Here are some good videos from Train With Me Online that show how to do 'em ...

Side crunch on ball ... Side plank on floor ... Side plank hip raises.

This is a fantastic, free site with over 800 exercise/lifting videos & how-to's, so enjoy!
