I was thinking about not weighing in too because I have not had a very disciplined week--Valentine's Day did not help, but generally speaking, I just blew off Calorie Count. This has always been my problem--I get off to a good start, and then falter after a couple of weeks. I have not been able to work out due to my knee, and I need to see an orthopedist, but I have no insurance so I must rely on these clinics (unemployed for 2 years). So, I was afraid to weigh in, but I thought that would just help me not face the consequences of my eating. So I weighed in and I have gained 4 pounds in a week. Discouraging, but I have HAVE to keep trying. Overall have only made a 3 pound dent since I started a month ago, but I have to keep reminding myself that I have to take those "baby steps." DOn;t know if I will hit the 30 pd target, but will keep trying.

as a former Nawlins resident, I can personally vouch for the fact that you need to be glad that you do not know what King Cake is--right, minlyn?

I totally f#$@$^%$ed up yesterday. Someone brought donuts to work. I ate FOUR. Caloric total was 3400 by the end of the day. I will have to work hard before my weigh in on Tuesday. Sheesh!

sounds like the Superbowl did a lot of folks in. I had to refrain from exericise because I overdid it last week and injured my knee. It is feeling much better now, so I hope to go to the gym tomorrow. But mine is a lesson hard learned--go slow and steady as many of us have too much pressure on our joints as it is.

Despite a major M&M relapse, the Superbowl and no exercise, I still managed to lose 2 more pounds so I feel encouraged.

holy crap--I lost five pounds. I am genuinely surprised.

Re surgery--I once consulted with a surgeon and he was so sweet--he said--this is not for people with serious weight problems, but for people slightly overweight who need a "nip and tuck." You would have to lose a lot before we could consider you for this surgery. I left feeling so great. NOT!

thanks for the reminder about needlework at night to keep thehands busy--I have the same problem--snacking too much at night. My husband doesn't help as he has a king size Snickers every night. I need to get him to do this with--he needs to drop about 25.

I used to needlepoint at night and it really worked. Some way I stopped and I will start up again--thanks again for the reminder.

I need to work out more, but I really messed my knee up in a brisk walk last week. I did not go to the gym today to give my knee a rest, but plan on it tomorrow. I also have my first weigh-in tomorrow and I am nervous. Actually, it's after 12 so I really mean today.

I forgot that this is a June 15 group. I gave my goal as 100--obviously not by June 15. Perhaps a year from June 15. At any rate, my goal for June 15 is 30 lbs.

Hi Sam--

well, if it is any consolation, I don't even know what you are talking about--what is the "calorie deficit thing"? I am curious to see the answer to your question above. Hope someone answers!

Kim

Does anyone know the correct RDA of sugar? I pretty much understand how to watch fat content, but not so clear on sugar. I somehow got 40 grams somewhere, and I consume way more than that, but now I have seen a formula that says it should be 10% of your calorie consumption. So, if my calorie consumption is 1350, then my sugar intake should be 135 g? That seems high, especially compared to 40. If it's true, then I am in good shape, as I have never come close to 135. Another question is this measurement for added sugar only, or does it include natural sugars?

I am on day 4 of staying more or less near my calorie target. What if you go way over, like at a party or something? Is there any way to eradicate this? I assume exercise more the next day, but does that really work?

for me, it seems like no matter how I diet, nothing much seems to happen unless I exercize. I gotta take it slowly, tho. All this weight has taken a toll on my joints. My goal is start out walking and move into the elliptical.

So far, I have spent 3 days on the unhealthy food wagon. But, I can't think about that. I just need to think about how I will get thru today. No more peanut M&Ms.

My addiction has always been cereal. I love nothing more than a huge bowl of cereal. I used to binge and eat an entire box in one sitting. I don't do that now but I still eat a helluva lot. Any kind of cereal--hot, cold, sweetened, unsweetened--you name it. It is a big source of my sugar intake so I am trying to cut back as much as I can. And this may sound weird, but I swear I feel high when I eat it. I read somewhere that certain foods for certain people can increase endorphine level. I am pretty sure that must be the case with me and my cereal.

That said, I ate a small bowl of granola today.

Hello gals. I am late. I am too scared to get on the scale, but I will estimate that I am 240. I am 5'3. I am basically 100 pounds more than what I was when I got married. I finally forced myself to look at current pictures of myself. It was not as bad as I anticipated, albeit horrifying. My goals are not just calorie counting, because I actually struggle to eat 1200 per day. But I eat a HUGE amount of sugar and I don't exercise. SO, I want to work on less sugar and more exercise, with an eye toward calorie count.

I also want to work up to courage to get on the scale. HELP!

Motivation Something is wrong. I need advice. Jun 30 2008

I am in a similar situation, but I am a gal, so people always write it off to child bearing, premenopause, etc. First and foremost, as a few others have said, go to the doctor and have your thyroid checked. And/or, get an evaluation by an endocrinologist--frankly, it sounds glandular if everything you say is true. Secondly, as we age, our caloric needs go down, so just keep that in mind--you cannot keep eating what you did in late20s/early 30s. Hope that helps.

Health & Support my doctor threatened to call the cops on me if i didn't go in for treatment...need some advice please! :/ Jun 14 2008

I think there is a common mistake in all the replys about the intepretation "totally healthy except being underweight." You are not the people who should be offering suggestions to this person.

As a recovered anorexic, I can tell you a few things. One, you will always feel you are fat/flabby, no matter how thin or fat/flabby you are. You will always be unhappy unless you get the MENTAL health treatment you need. I believe that is what your doctor was talking about--your mental health is threatening your physical health. SHe is trying to be preventative. You are losing too much weight too fast to sustain your heart and the fact that you think that your weight for your height is okay tells me that you are well entrenched in distorted anorexic thinking. This will lead to continued deteriation of your muscles, INCLUDING your heart. Listen to your doctor and get help as soon as possible.

Donna-I am new too so I have no clue how this works either, but even tho I have more to lose, your profile more closely matches mine than these young little gals I keep reading about. I am not divorced, but sometimes wish I were...perhaps we can be weight loss buddies? I just need someone to rant at and to share progress or lack thereof.
