My best friend is 2 days younger then me. She's got a job, a boyfriend that she can actually talk to on a daily basis, a kickass family, super outgoing/total social butterfly and a super flat tummy. You bet I'm jealous of that. But I know she's jealous of certain qualities I have. I'm curvy as hell, I've got a pretty face, I do better in academics, I can perform athletically better then she can, and my family has done well traumatizing me so that I've creative and fun to be around. It evens out. She's a big motivation for me to do my best, but I know my limits. I'm not her, and I'm glad! I'm pretty awesome as I am, and I'm loved by my friends the way I am. I love her the way she is and I don't think she should try to be like me either. We all have our strengths and weaknesses. Just.. don't get too carried away. Comparing yourself to someone else can put an ugly jealousy battle in a friendship, and really kill your self-esteem along the way. Do your best, but just remember that you don't have your friend's DNA so you can't exactly look like her, even after you've lost weight. |

Frowned about? Hm, I never noticed any o' that... Most of the people that are underweight or skinny enough are encouraged to do other things like maintain, gain weight so they're at a healthy weight, and strength train. CC is here to promote a healthy lifestyle, and people who are on a healthy BMI are encouraged to maintain and try strength training if they feel "fat" because that would help them more then losing anymore weight. People who are underweight are encouraged to gain weight so that they aren't underweight anymore. Why? Because it's dangerous for your health to be underweight. Bingers are encouraged to stop, of course, no doubt. :P The only thing that is frowned upon is if someone seeks to continue their dangerous actions here.. whether it be restricting your calories to ridiculously small amounts, or to be in a competition of "who can binge more". Or.. something. o.o I haven't really heard many bingers talk about how they want to continue that lifestyle, haha. But on the BMI chart note, twilitwing is right. CC's tools are made for people over 21. Just for future reference: http://www.bcm.edu/cnrc/bodycomp/bmiz2.html This calculator is for anyone under 21. It includes calories for peeps under 21 too. :) Try using that to see if you're underweight or not. |

Yeah. Even if I don't like being overweight, I've learned a lot from the experience. It taught me that avoiding my feelings by indulging in something is never the answer. As weird as it is, losing weight has made me a lot more assertive. Before I'd just go with the flow, because I didn't want to "deal with it", but since I've started my weight loss journey I've had to stick up for myself & the things I want to accomplish, and deal with my emotions head on instead of avoiding it all together. It taught me what "healthy" really is.. IE, exercising on a daily basis and eating foods that are satisfying and nutritious. If I was naturally skinny, I'd probably be on the computer 24/7 and loading up on poptarts everyday. XD And you know, the suceeding thing built up some confidence for me, and like you, I don't think I'll ever be able to be a total a-hole to someone I don't know because of their looks, because I've been there before. :3 |

lul, WUT? You can't over eat if you're already starving. You, as a 16 year-old girl and still developing, need 1500 BARE MINIMUM! More if you're exercising (and by exercising, I mean anything that's not you just sitting in one position not fidgetting or anything like that.) CC's tools aren't made for kiddos under 21. BEHOLD!: http://www.bcm.edu/cnrc/bodycomp/bmiz2.html The BMI chart for us younginz. You're at an incredibly healthy weight right now, and you should consider weight training if you feel you're "flabby" or got any "pooches" I hear a lot about. Muscle goes omnomnom at fat when you're at rest, and makes you look lean and tone. Deffo check out the fitness forum for some great ideas on that. But seriously. Up your cals. Your body is omnomnoming at your muscles, and by undereating you're at risk for osteoporosis, losing hair, stunting your growth, etc etc. Not fun stuff. You will gain your energy back, and you'll be able to maintain on a larger amount of food later on. Stay away from the scale for atleast a week and a half. The extra food will make you retain some extra water or something.. I dunno, but the scale will say "hoho you've gained weight!" but in reality, you haven't. If the weight does stay however, don't use that as an excuse to drop your calories below 1500. Why? Because it'll be only temporarily. Eat a healthy deficit and you'll feel better and once your body is all regulated after coming out of starvation mode, you'll drop weight faster. Personally, I still think eating maintenance and strength training so you can build some lean and sexy muscle (no not like body builder muscle.. think Jessica Biel kind of muscle) will make you look a lot leaner then what the scale says, AND with that extra food, you'll feel better which will make you look better. You want to look good, you gotta eat. You want to feel good, you gotta eat. So please, pleeeease start eating more food starting.. Today! |

Wow. Cool, I appreciate all of your replies! :D la_discotheque - That's a really interesting site. I'm going to give it a go and see if I can use it. I've never really heard of CBT before, but that method might be useful! I'll defiantly try it, thanks! trustwomen - Aw shucks, special thanks for your reply. It really made my day. ;) I honestly believed I was the only one dealing with this sort of feeling, knowing that there's others in my position makes me feel a bit more secure that I'm not a total weirdo with issues. XD I reflected on what else I could be avoiding with weight gain, and there's a lot of possibilities and not so many as well. I'd have to dig a little deeper to find out for sure. I'm defiantly going to try my best with CBT. Thanks. And I'm rooting for you! cerealaddiction - Yeah, there's a whole lot of things that I say to myself that I would NEVER want to say to anyone because it'd probably make them burst into tears! (Eeks.) You defiantly have a point, and I've been very lazy when it comes to being nice to myself.. which isn't good at all. I know that negative self-thinking could also plague my friends if it slipped out, and I don't want that. But, even if I believe I should do that, I feel like I'm missing the steps to actually be able to do it. To be nice and friendly to yourself just feels/seems.. foreign and very awkward. Sometimes it feels like I'm being dishonest to how I actually feel. Am I doing it wrong, or is it normal to feel that? |

Whoa. Two hours of working out? Man, I don't think even I could sustain that for very long. Maybe you could work with how you're feeling instead of fighting against it. For example: Try HIIT. 20 minutes of high intensity training, and you'll feel like you did an hours worth. Or try upping your intensity in your one hour workout so you don't even need that second hour! As far as eating goes, what else is to focus less on what you can and cannot eat, and amount of calories left in a day. Plan ahead, and focus on eating healthy... which means tons of fruit and veggies, whole grains, and lean meat (or legumes/soy/tofu if you're a veggie). If you focus more on the abundance of yummy fresh foods you're more likely to feel satisfied. I don't know about you, but having a HUUGE salad, or a bunch of veggies next to whatever I'm eating makes me feel a lot more satisfied then if I just had a small bag of cheetos with the same worth. Think: What will give you energy? What makes you feel full? What makes you feel glowing and happy? I don't think booze, cake, or any other junk food has ever given me that. Being healthy feels more amazing then what a couple of seconds of processed crap has ever given me. Keep that in mind. For me, what encourages me is to look at someone who is fit. Are you into fitness blogs or food blogs? I highly reccomend ohsheglows.com or katheats.com! Both are healthy, balanced people! I also look at trainers and fitness experts who say "Yeah! You can do it!" For me, those fitness trainers are Tony Horton (http://tonyhorton.blogspot.com/) and Chalene Johnson (http://chalenejohnson.blogspot.com/). I get a lot of encouragement to keep up with my program by looking at their advice, and looking at others who have done the same program as I'm doing and have excellent results! But don't fret. Losing motivating, having some extra calories when events come up are all apart of your life. You can't avoid a piece of cake forever, and there will be days when you can only fit in 10 minutes of your workout before you're done! That's perfectly O.K! What really matters is getting your spirit up and doing your best. If you feel like you can do more, do it, because whether you can or can not, you're right. You have the power to do anything you want to, and I know you'll be fine and get back on track in no time. :D Good luck! |

| Young Calorie Counters | To what extent are you girls influenced by models? | Apr 27 2009 03:13 (UTC) |
51 |
I've always been more influenced by what people say about models, celebrities.. or even regular people! If someone went "haha porky" to a 110 lb model I felt really bad about myself. Now I know better and recognize my value as a human being and I recognize I'm a sexy beat in my own way, I think it's pretty irresponsible of the media to say negative and mean thing about another person's body. That's not good for anyone of ANY age. But generally, I recognize most models have to go extreme lengths I feel is not necessary for a girl like me to do in everyday life, I also recognize most models have body types that are drastically different from mine, so I really don't care about how much they weigh and stuff. I always thought a model was more about the face and attitude/posture then the actual body shape and weight. Maybe it's just me? But I always awed Tyra Banks. I thought she was the prettiest Victoria Secret model. XD I still think she's hella pretty despite gaining weight. She could become overweight and I'd still think that girl could pull it off and make it.. *ahem* fierce. XD |

Just an FYI: 1500 calories is the bare minimum for teens and you'll defiantly need more on those days that you walk around!! Hurrah!: http://www.bcm.edu/cnrc/bodycomp/bmiz2.html = For anyone under 21 because CC's tools are not made for younginz! I would calculate it for you, but alas, I just installed ubuntu, and I haven't installed java yet. Grrr. Anyway, use that tool and subtract 500 if you want a deficit. Since you're really not focusing on weight loss but toning, susiecue has got the right idea, you're going to need more exercising to become toned, and a deficit in calories really isn't needed since your focus isn't on weight loss.. You're really at a kickin' weight for your height. :] More on that resistance training stuff in the lovely fitness forum. ♥ G'luuck~! |

Well, I think you healthy, petite, and toned. If I were at your weight, I'd stop at that point, start maintaining and chuck the scale if it makes you want to lose more to get to a slightly lower number. :D I totally understand where you're coming from. Sometimes I question whether my friends and family are being honest with me when I ask for their opinions, and sometimes there are just days where I feel like I'm fit and sexy and I should consider maintaining soon, and other days when I'm like "man.. I have so far to go..", an unbiased opinion is always good. ;) Kudos to getting where you're at! <3 |

| Health & Support | How do i speak... | Apr 17 2009 07:54 (UTC) |

I would defiantly sit her down, and talk to her directly, but be careful of what you say. Sometimes when someone comes at you, even if they mean it well, it can sound like you're attacking her instead of speaking out in concern. The way I would do it would be to ask her about being underweight, bring it up as a casual topic, like.. And then lead it into expressing your concerns "I read that if your BMI is too low, there's studies that <insert health concern with being underweight here>. And I was thinking about you, and I was wondering if you had any health problems yourself that could be related to your low weight. If so, is there anything I can do to help you find a doctor, or give you a ride there or something?" If you go at her like "You're too underweight. You exercise too much. You need to go to the doctor." She'll feel very attacked and overwhelmed. Trust me, I've had my dad do something similar, except he was saying that I was looking gaunt and pale (I have anemia, and I'm actually overweight...still! lol) and "You need to do" this and that really put me into total rage, and did not help me at all. But voicing your concerns is a good thing to do, just be careful how you do it. Don't be too pushy, if she says she's fine and doesn't want to talk about it, back off but tell her that you're always wishing her the best and you'd love to help her if she ever needs help with anything. :) G'luck! |

I pimp slapped my best friend for tackling me, partied with my old park friends until I peed myself and realized "oh snaps I got my period and have no pads with me", and the most note worthy event was I saw my 3rd grade peers (you know, those kids you recognized in school but never talked to?) graduating from 3rd grade, and I walked up to where they were sitting waiting to leave and I said "Hey guys!", there was a girl I didn't recognize asked me in a very rude manner "May I help you?" I turned to her, and said cheerfully "Naw, I'm helpless!" before sneaking off so I wouldn't get caught and questioned by the teachers. When I was exiting there was a couple in a car outside saying "oh man, here comes one of them! Look! A graduate! Wowwww~!" the guy had the most gnarly moustache ever. I swear I passed like 4 hamburger shaped houses when I was walking away. There was tooons of shrubbery too. I love me some shrubbery! Ahh. Radio + Insecurities + Hidden Emotions = one hell of a dream. I almost fell on this little bike turn with no rail that was over a 50 ft drop. I wasn't even on a bike! Sheesh. Is it just me or is walking in dreams very wobbly to do and hard to balance? |

I personally thought Billy Banks was wayyy too easy. D: It barely got me sweating when I did it. May be different for you, though. -shrug- I highly reccomend Chalean Extreme. I've been doing it for a couple of weeks now, and I feel so much stronger. It's intense, but unlike P90x, it doesn't last for a whole freakin' hour, so I'm personally more motivated to do it. I love it though. Chalene Johnson is incredibly motivating and not really annoying. I thought Tony Horton wasn't really motivating enough at times. I wanted to kick him in the groins when we did yoga and he was like "Well, you're not going to like this, and you can come out if you'd like.." guh, not what I wanted to hear. Chalene would be more like "YES! Feel the burn! You can stay there! Only x more seconds!" which is what keeps me going. XD But yes. I think I put forth a lot more effort in a short amount of time in the Chalean Extreme videos then I do in P90x. Buut, P90x is a pretty sweet investment too. (I'm just biased and think C.E. is better. Hehe.) Generally speaking, Power 90 can be intense if you put forth the effort. I think they have an "advanced" dude in the bunch when you do the workout to show you how to make it more intense. I didn't do much of Power 90, though. Only a little before I started P90x. Turbo Jam.. I thought I was uncoordinated, and at first I was really bad at it, but once you do it a couple of times and get used to Chalene's cueing (which isn't the zomg best cueing evarrr) it's actually pretty easy to get through the video following along, not hitting yourself, or bumping into things. :o |

| Young Calorie Counters | Happy Easter! What are your motivators? | Apr 12 2009 21:39 (UTC) |

For me, it's because I like it. I like feeling like I'm doing good for myself. I like the endorphin high I get after working out. I like the attention I get for my body because I take care of it. I like being able to out walk, run faster, jump higher, and breath easier then any of my friends and family members! I like the way I can now shop in normal clothe sections and not be embarrassed about my size at all. The way I keep up with those things is to take care of myself by eating good stuff and working out. So I do, because I know if I stop, I'll lose those things that I like so much. So, my motivation is primarily for myself and things I like. I could never really get motivated by health myself, I guess I'm more of a shallow variety. These days now that I know what 'healthy' feels like, I do get more motivated about it. Now if only I could find that motivation to remember to brush my teeth after every meal. -sigh- But in general, find anything that gets you going. If you think this super cute guy will notice you if you get more in shape and active, go for it. More then likely later on your motivation will completely change once you discover how great being fit, active, and healthy is. :D |

Why not have both? Have one cookie, and a little bit of fruit together. That way you can moderate the portion of cookies you have, and still have a little healthy somethin' on the side to keep you full. And putting away the cookies also helps. :P But think about it: do you plan on avoiding cookies for the rest of your life? If you were maintaining your ideal weight, I bet you'd allow yourself a cookie. Just.. not the whole bag. Moderation for the win! As for making healthy foods more satisfying.. Try new things and adding food groups. Fruit and nuts go great, cheese and veggies, grains and pretty much anything. Think about what'll fuel your body and make you feel full.. while still be pretty satisfying. Protein, fats, and carbs all balanced out will make you feel very satisfied after a snack. 'Specially when you have extra protein and fiber! |

I became a vegetarian because I didn't really care for meat to begin with, and I just felt.. bad for eating it. I wouldn't bring myself to kill the animal, why would I let myself eat the meat of an animal that someone else killed for profit? I don't see the point of it, and I'd rather abstain for it and allow the ones who enjoy meat have the share I would've eaten. Not too into the whole vegan and vegetarian clique. I hate PETA with a firey passion, and I don't make my vegetarianism known to the world. It's just food choices, yanno? -shrug- But you know, the whole health benefits is pretty gnarly. |

| Young Calorie Counters | Calories Causing Plateau? | Apr 09 2009 00:20 (UTC) |
|
Whelps, for future reference use this handy dandy tool to calculate your needs: http://www.bcm.edu/cnrc/bodycomp/bmiz2.html&n bsp; Yup, on the days you're working out, you should be eating more. You should be eating somewhere around 2000-2500 calories on the day you workout for a nice healthy deficit. I'd say a good number to stick to would be 2100 calories on the days you workout. Assuming your binging isn't hugely emotional, upping your calories to your activity level might actually stop the binging. That and allowing yourself a splurge every now and then to maintenance or a little above will remind your body that you're not going to starve. :D You might also want to remember that you're at a REALLY great weight for your height (down at the middle of the BMI chart) so your body might not really like the idea of going lower, and as well since you've added strength training, you'll be gaining muscle which will make you look leaner buuut water retention and general muscle gaining will make the scale plateau or gain. Just an opinion: Ditch the scale. Try taking measurements instead. :D |
