Weight Loss HIIT = Weight (fat) Loss? Apr 23 2007

If you're not sure you're in good enough shape to try HIIT, give yourself a bit of time to work up to it (and if you're really not sure, talk to your doctor). It's important to first make sure you're not going to hurt yourself before you try something as demanding as HIIT.

It sound like you've got a good routine going. If you want to get started with something similar to HIIT but not quite as intense, you could try some intervals that are higher than your used to but not quite as high as a HIIT program calls for. For instance, if you were on the treadmill, you could do a 5 minute warm-up until you're at a fast walking pace. Then spend one minute running at a pace you can handle, and drop back to your walking pace for three minutes (repeat until you reach 25 minutes). The more your fitness level improves, the faster (and longer) you'll be able to run on your intervals.

If you do HIIT, you're going to be very tired and probably won't feel like doing any additional cardio after that. I generally use HIIT on days I want to work out but don't have a lot of time, and I really like it. Hope this helps!

Try HIIT on a stepmill - incredible. I do 40 seconds of climbing at a high speed and "rest" for two minutes at about half my high speed...and oh my God is it hard. I've actually managed to do it for 45 minutes but I felt like I was going to die, so I'm cutting it back to 30 mins. I'm still struggling to accept that doing less time at the gym is better though!

Thanks for the support guys! Seeing them really was a shock, but I'm trying not to use that as an excuse to eat the M&Ms in our office fridge :) I guess what caught me off guard is that like a lot of you, I just don't have pictures of me during my heaviest times - I avoid the camera like the plague.

And jenmcc - thankfully my old pictures lack shoulder pads and blue eyeshadow!

I think I'm going to have to stay away from the "before" pictures because it's just too upsetting to look at them (though unfortunately, I think one particular picture is burned into my mind for the rest of time). Maybe one day when I reach my goal I'll be able to look at them without cringing, but until then...not so much.

I really wish I knew then what I know now about eating, exercise and living a healthy life... I feel like I've wasted so much time being overweight when I could have been healthy and in shape.

Daisyg - I did the manual setting so I could control the levels. I kept on level 6, and then I did 40 second intervals on level 10 (just under a running pace) every 2 minutes. After 45 minutes I was completely exhausted. I really wish I knew how many calories I burned!

I haven't tried any of the preset programs on it yet. I'll have to give it a try tonight!

I used to use the elliptical all the time but even when I cranked up the resistance it still didn't seem as challenging as it used to. I can't imagne ever getting used to the stepmill.

Have you tried interval training on it yet? I did it yesterday and I thought I was going to die (but in a good way!).

Daisyg, if it's the thing I'm thinking about (looks like you're walking up a down escalator, right?) it's called a stepmill, and it's my new favorite machine at the gym. The calorie calculator here says a moderate pace on the elliptical burns more calories than the stepmill, but its seems soooo much harder and I'm always exhausted after I use that thing. I personally think the stepmill must burns more calories than the ellptical.
Weight Loss If you've been to Disney World, and have some healthy experiences HELP! Feb 27 2007

I remember hearing that the average Disney World visitor walks something like 10-13 miles a day. Not sure if that's true for everyone, but as long as you make reasonably decent food choices, it should go a long way to making it possible for you to maintain--if not lose--your weight.

I once asked my trainer which was more important, diet or exercise. He responded by asking me which was more important - my left leg or my right.

Exercise is important not just for weightloss but for your overall cardiovascular health. I agree with everyone esle - try to find something you like and it will make working out more pleasant. Good luck!

Obsydian, I'm so with you on this. To say I'm not athletically inclined would be an understatement, but since I've been working out with a trainer I've found out that I'm unusually good at weightlifting. I've really gotten into it and it's so much fun.

I think a lot of people, especially women, have a misconception of what a woman who lifts weights looks like. I saw pictures from a bodybuilding competition and all the women looked totally normal with clothes on - really fit and thin, in fact. The only reason they have such defined muscles in competition is because they diet down to really low body fat levels. Otherwise they look great.

Hey xoxo, just FYI, you're right to be suspicious about the whole "muscle becoming fat" thing. That's like saying you're pancreas can become your liver - they're two totally separate types of tissue and one can never become the other.

I have a problem with bulkiness too. For me the only way to deal with it is to concentrate on eating healthy foods, varying my exercise and stretching. I think what you're doing with the low resistance will help alot too. Good luck!

It's all about finding the right one. Saroful's right about checking their certs, and if you have a chance you might want to talk to another one of his/her clients. Before I started using a trainer I paid attention to how all the trainers at my gym worked with their clients and made my choice based on that. Having a trainer is great but it's not for everyone. I will say this though: you'll never push yourself as hard as a trainer will push you.

I think more important than what you should eat is how you should exercise - make sure you're doing a good bit of strength training if you're eating less. Otherwise you might lose weight, but it will be from both muscle and fat instead of from just fat.

I'm sure someone else will have some good suggestions about what foods to eat.

I personally don't trust weight charts - I don't feel as though they take into account how muscular a person is or the extent to which your body build affects your weight. If you were happy and comfortable at 225, then I say aim for that and don't worry about what any chart say. But you might want to get your body fat checked just to make sure that at 225 you don't have too much fat. I can't remember off the top of my head the healthy percentages for a man, but I'm sure you can find it on this site.
Weight Loss Reduced calories = stunted growth? Jun 05 2006

I really doubt it. Unless you severely restricted your calories for a long period of time and were malnourished for years, I don't think eating 1200 cals of healthy food will do anything to your height. Also, since you're 17 you're probably coming to the end of the time at which you're still growing anyway. I know I stopped growing around 14 or 15.

Maybe using weight to determine pant size isn't the best approach. Two people can be the same height and the same weight but be very different sizes based on how muscular they are.

I love the elliptical, swimming cycling and weight lifting...I LOVE weight lifing. Dancing when I go out with my friends is also great!

I HATE running. I wish I liked it but I always get terrible shin splints so it's just not worth it. Mountan climbers are pretty bad too. Has anyone else done them?

Hey Salome, jumping rope is a great exercise and it burns tons of calroeis. To start off aim at jumping the rope 100 times fast without stopping. It took me a while to work up to 100 (I was usually dying by 25) but now it's no problem. Make sure you have a rope that's the right length and that you're not trying to jump too high or swing your arms too hard. I don't know what you weigh but I'm not exactly a lightweight and I didn't have trouble with it. Just make sure you have a good sports bra!
Weight Loss Hoodia... Diet Supplement May 28 2006
04:10 (UTC)

When I first heard about Hoodia I did some research on it because it sounded really promising and different from what's out there now, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't wasting my money. From what I found, it seems as though the only form of hoodia that was effective was the raw plant, which is a problem because it grows really slowly. It's also against the law (I think) to export the plant, or something like that. So anything that's on the market now is either made from the ground up root of the plant, which doesn't have the same effect as the plant itself, or illegal. I can't say this is all 100% absolute fact but I read that in a few places, so it really turned me off to it.

One other thing to consider - Pfizer had purchased the rights to make a weight loss drug from the plant but they were never able to make it work. They eventually sold the rights to another company. If they couldn't do it, I doubt some diet pill company pulled it off.
Weight Loss First Week - Disappointing May 25 2006

Champykk - first of all, congratulations on choosing to lose weight the right way. It's sounds like you're doing everything right.

The reason you're having trouble getting started is because, as you put it, you were a "fad diet junkie." Most diets focus on WEIGHT loss, not FAT loss. There's a huge difference. When we lose a lot of weigh on fad diets, a significan portion of that weight isn't fat but muscle. Having a lot of muscle increases your metabolism, so losing that muscle on a fad diet is really really bad and absolutely kills your metabolism. This is why most people who go on a diet end up gaining the weigh back - after losing all that muscle, your metabolsim is completely shot.

Since I don't know how much you exercise this may not apply to you, but if you'd been on a lot of diets, chances are it does (I would know - it happened to me on Weight watchers). Your weight loss is going to be a little slow in the beginning as your metabolism recovers, but you can help it along by making sure you're eating 4-5 small, healthy meals a day and doing some sort of strenghtening exercise several days a week along with your regular cardio. If you're doing things right, you shouldn't lose more than 1.5-2lbs a week (any more than that and it's probably muscle). Good luck!

It depends on what you put in as your activity level. If you put your activity level as sedetary or light, then no, it doesn't count that and you have to log those activities separately. If you said your activity level was moderate or high, then 1900 might cover that.

Personally, I prefer to set my activity level as low as possible so I can log my exercise separately, but it's up to you how you want go about it.
