Weight Loss Does your wrist really determine your frame? Jul 11 2008

Original Post by clharr:

The theory is that you don't have fat or muscle on the wrist, but if you are obese, you do have fat there. 20+ pounds ago, my fingers did not overlap. Now they do. So it is not a very good measure

I agree.. my fingers overlap my wrists but I'm slightly overweight and 168 lbs..

Uh.. go to the hospital? Work or not.. you don't know what those pills have done to your body... I used them back before I found CC (ephedra free version) and I had no side effects but it says on both the bottle, box and instructions to cease use if your type of symptoms arise and to see a doctor.

I don't know what kind of answer you are expecting besides see a doctor and go the hospital.. I wouldn't waste time waiting for more replies..

That's a pound a week. Which is what you'd get with a 500 calorie deficit.

Make sure you keep your goals realistic. When you think about the numbers, 4 pounds in a month is nothing to despair over.

Exactly.

Keep doing it the CC way and you'll keep it off. Trust me! There are many on this website who can say the same thing! Good luck! =]

I love this thread... I thought we were supposed to be encouraging and making ourselves knowledgeable about HEALTHY weight loss..

Normally, I would have ignored this but it's infuriating. I asked an intelligent question not too long ago about herbal supplements and extracts and no one responded. Yet someone makes a thread about a starvation diet and 47 people respond? The majority positively? Pathetic..

Thanks guys! I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing.. I don't see my question getting asked a lot and I think it's an important one because it's hard to know whether you've lost fat or muscle when there is no change in inches around the body.

Yes, most of the time it does cause a weight change. I took Alesse over a year ago and I gained weight but more in my breast area (bonus! hahaha)

I tend to disagree with Kelleigh's last statement because when it comes to this type of BC, everyone is different. Most people do gain weight and I don't believe it is 98% of time because of poor eating habits but rather because hormonal changes within one's body. Like I said, everyone is different but I myself do gain weight and it's not something noticeable like in my tummy area.. I usual go up a cup size or two..

Weight Loss amount of carbs in your diet Jul 05 2008

I'm approx 170 lbs, 5' 5", 18 and female.. my ratio is 50-30-20 (Carbs, Protein, Fats)..

I eat, according to CC, 180-210 grams of carbohydrates daily which is in the 50 to 60 percent range..

I agree with most of the statements here.. make the right choices and introduce the right kind of carbs into your diet. I only eat multigrain, whole wheat breads and pastas, of which I should mention, I don't eat a lot of pasta. Lots of veggies and fruits will help you aswell.. fibre rich foods as always to keep you full longer..

Well Bryndchildr, you must have missed the part where she says she already "walks 30 minutes" and "has been trying to lose weight forever" and and nothing is happening.

That is why I said that doesn't count. It's not doing what she wants it to do. If that is working for YOUR body, that's great. But you are not her, don't have her body, don't have her metabolism, and don't have her goals. You cannot compare yourself to her needs.

I'm a professional trainer and providing free expertise to guide her to meet HER goals in HER timeframe. And from her own statements, she obviously needs to do a lot more than just walk with kids.

But glad that's working okay for you.

I'm sorry, I suppose that was wrong of me to judge her needs against my own. The only reason why I felt the need to say something is because my metabolism is extremely slow after having a child due hormonal imbalances and I've had poor eating habits all my life. Figured I'd give my two cents since I've had success with CC and the advice given to me on here.. of which some was from this website, and some from a professional trainer aswell. All the advice given to her thus far is very helpful and true (including your own).

Perhaps she does need to do more than walk with kids, all I'm saying is that it's working with someone who struggles with imbalances, someone who never knew how to lose and maintain weight properly before. Perhaps it may work for her. And I don't just walk 30 minutes a day with my son, maybe it'd help her if she did some other type of cardio and walked with the kids for a bit longer? (And yes I noted that she mentioned having an elliptical trainer)

I don't know, I'm not a professional trainer.. oliverio should also speak with her doctor to make sure she doesn't have any imbalances of her own, perhaps that may be the problem... another reason she could not be losing the weight is because she's not eating properly? There is so much to consider.. I don't think one should rule out a walk with the kids because she's not losing weight.. there are too many factors to consider and I've read her posts very clearly but I haven't read anything that describes her eating habits..

Anyway, thanks for the reality check.. hah.

Walking with kids doesn't even count. Unless they are big kids and you guys are hoofing it, that is just another leisure activity. You need to be MOVING in order for it to count as a fat burning activity. I suggest you do the following 3 to 4 days per week, making sure you do cardio twice per day even on days you don't weight train:

I tend to disagree with that.. I've lost 5 lbs in the last three weeks and that's all I've been doing.. walking either by myself or pushing my son in a stroller for 4-5 miles everyday.

Otherwise, you're dead on and so are the rest of the responses! I think you'll be fine.. just cut out the unnecessary. Extra pop, juice, fattening foods, etc, should be cut out immediately.. lots of water and fibre rich foods! Use this website as much as you can.. there are a lot of helpful tips and tools that will help you achieve your goal! The Calorie Counter is very beneficial as is the Burn Meter.. Good luck with your situation, I hope to hear a success story very soon!!

Weight Loss How many tries did it take you till you were fully committed to a healthier lifestyle? Jul 05 2008

It took me been about ten years since I started fighting with myself in terms of self-image and health.. I was always an overweight child, growing up I became somewhat thin but I always ate the wrong foods and never included the good ones. Since my pregnancy over a year ago, I have tried two times since then and the second was when I joined this website.

I wasn't ready to commit to a healthy lifestyle which included exercise, proper eating and body nourishment. Before, I had never made it past two weeks on a "diet". Now, I've lost 5 lbs in three weeks so far and I'm extremely motivated. Now that my young toddler is no long a baby, he eats our food and no longer baby food. I know as long as he is eating right (veggies, grains, meats, alternatives, fruit, etc,.), I will be too!

I have to work on quitting smoking now..

According to the National Institute of Heath, your BMI would be 16.4 at 105lbs. Have you seen the starving children in Etheopia? Put your face on their bodies and there you have it.

bryndhildr was very appropriate in stating not to 'abuse this site to become unhealthy'. In addition, the majority of members here will not tolerate it. We are here to support healthy lifestyles, not to encourage people with unrealistic and unhealthy self images.

Lol, I didn't say that.. I just agreed.

Weight Loss How often should you eat? Jul 03 2008
21:10 (UTC)

From what I've read, discussed with a nutritionist/dietician and from what works best for me:

-ALWAYS eat breakfast

-Eat three meals a day

-Eat three healthy, low-cal snacks a day

-Never eat 3-4 hours before bedtime.

-Drink lots of water during the day (also include fiber rich foods - helps fill you up), it helps keep unnecessary munching at bay and your body needs it!

Hopefully, those help tips help you..  I used to never eat breakfast or at times and never any snacks, fruits and vegetables.. since taking all of those tips into consideration, I've felt more energetic and the weight is coming off! Good luck!

Weight Loss Who to listen to when losing weight? Jul 03 2008
21:03 (UTC)

I listen to myself.. and my doctor if needed. I've always been a very healthy person and the only reason why I've decided to lose weight is because the extra 25 lbs I put on during pregnancy a year ago is putting me at risk for Diabetes, Heart Disease, etc,..

I have never paid attention to the media and what they display because the majority of the time, pictures are distorted and photoshopped. A lot of Hollywood stars go on Crash diets constantly and in the long run, they won't live as long as a seventy-year-old. They also seem to promote eating disorders and unhealthy lifestyles so for me, that's another reason why I ignore it all.

I also don't get all depressed about the number on the scale. I've learned to get to know my body and I know I have a very high muscle mass and that's why my weight is higher than most people my age. I think one should be more concerned per say about the inches around their waist rather than a number on a scale.

That's my reasoning behind my answer, I hope you will always listen to yourself and your doctor about what's best for YOU. Your boyfriend and family are not you, therefore do not know what's best for you. =]

I looked at your stats and your goal is unrealistic. With a height of 5'7'' and a weight of 105 pounds, you would have a BMI of 16.4; severely underweight. I too am 5'7" and your age, with the same starting weight. Now I weigh 118 and I am perfectly happy. 118 is a little on the thin side, but I am a runner, so I need to be light.

Saying that you want to get down to 105 and "be healthy" is hilarious. You could seriously hurt yourself in the process. This is coming from someone who tried to model, and I say, IT IS NOT WORTH IT! You'll screw up your metabolism (which could lead to weight issues later on in life) trying to get down to 105.

Please don't abuse this site to become unhealthy, get an eating disorder, or whine about how you need to lose weight. Because, in reality, you don't. Don't do this to yourself.

Agreed....

I ain't raggin' on you either girl(ohhmyy93) but I get annoyed when I read unrealistic goals like yours.. all for what? To model? I'm no longer a model and let me tell you, when I was one, I never let any photographer or client tell me that I had to be 105 lbs. Unrealistic and not beautiful at all.. When I was modeling, I was 150 lbs. I wasn't overweight or obese, I have a high muscle mass.

The weight you are at now is perfect.. if you want to tone your body, build some muscle.. I'm going to stop here because I don't want you to think I'm ripping you up, it sounds like you have self-esteem issues. Good luck with whatever you decide to do, come up with something more realistic though. =]

P.S. It sounds like you lost some water weight.

Weight Loss Anyone walking off the weight? Jul 03 2008

Original Post by mkculs:

It was amazing because I mapped out a walk that's about 4 miles and probably would take about 20-30 minutes if I walked 3.0+mph. I live in a small town too so all I'm doing is walking through a lot of empty streets within a mile or two of my home.

I love your suggestion, but just want to make sure you realize your math is a bit off in this example. 4 miles would take an hour and 20 minutes at 3 mph . . . and that's ok!

But I'm so glad to see your post in general, because I'm using walking as a big part of my weight loss plan. I used to hate walking, but I've learned to like it a lot more since having kids and finding out how nice it is to pop them in the stroller and go! I still prefer soccer/running/hiking, but the walking is such a great, simple addition to my weight loss plan AND one I can drop or use when I reach maintencance, too. I'm a teacher and summer is "free time" for me, so in addition to more rigourous workouts 3-4 times/week, I'm walking about 3.5 miles once a day (takes me about 50 minutes now because I'm pretty fit). When school starts, I can use the walking on days I don't get in a different workout.

So thanks for the post. Maybe we can have a "walkers group" and check in once a week or so. Let me know and I can try to organize a forum for us.

Haha, Math was never my strong point anyhow but thank you!! Same with myself aswell, I used to hate walking. It is hard for me as a single working mother who is also partaking post-secondary education to get out and do activities like hiking, soccer, hockey, etc,.. now that I've finally got myself on the right track in terms of making a commitment to healthy eating and exercise, I more than enjoy walking a little bit longer. In fact, I'm trying to find excuses to walk longer.

As for the idea for a Walker's Group, I think that's a fantastic idea!! I'm sure there are many others too that would be interested in it. I'm all for it! :D

Dunno if it's working, but it sure is saving me gas money ;).

PS: Dogs are GREAT motivation...but Haley---I do know my beagle was never an excercise partner:

walk, walk, sniff, pee, walk, sniff, pee, eat something off the ground, sniff, walk, approach person going by to see if they have something to eat, pee, walk, sniff

Hahah, I don't own a dog but I'll take my son in the stroller along for the walk. Great motivation and he gets fresh air too :D

Hmmm maybe this is just what I need to get my lazy butt back into the exercise mode!!! I love walking in combination with light jogging....I use my treadmill TONS and also have a beagle that probably needs to be walked more often as well :)

~H~

You know, I personally think it'd be a good start for you. I just started walking around to the grocery store and around the schools in my area and I was real surprised after I found out how much/long I walked. I don't have a treadmill myself but I was reading up on walking off weight and I came across this: http://www.mapmywalk.com ;

It uses Google maps and allows you to map out where you want to walk. It was amazing because I mapped out a walk that's about 4 miles and probably would take about 20-30 minutes if I walked 3.0+mph. I live in a small town too so all I'm doing is walking through a lot of empty streets within a mile or two of my home.

If anyone is interested in using that resource, this will go along with it too: http://walking.about.com/library/cal/uccalc1. htm <-- just an approx idea of how many calories you would burn if you walked slow, fast at certain speeds and for a particular duration.

Weight Loss My Scale is Broken!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Jul 03 2008

I agree with gi-jane when he/she (sorry) says that it's a blessing in disguise.

I personally do not own a scale anymore, I go over to my neighbours every week or two weeks to weigh myself. I find I get less discouraged if I weigh myself at those intervals rather than everyday.. there is a lot to take into consideration like water retention, menstrual cycles, etc, and I found I got discouraged when I weighed myself everyday and the scale didn't change or said I gained a lb.

Good luck!

I'm 5' 5",

SW: 181 lbs

GW: 150-160 lbs (I have a high muscle mass, no need to lose more)

CW: 173 lbs

I just started getting serious about having a healthy lifestyle and I have posted on this site on and off since January. Back then, I wasn't fully committed but now it's been two weeks (not a long time) and I have so much more energy and I'm not at war with food anymore.. Since I started at 175 lbs two weeks ago, I have lost 2 lbs (Pretty sure it's not water weight since I've been this weight consistently in the past few days).. sorry for the rant but I've never felt better in my life. I'm thankful that this website exists.. and of course, I must give SOME credit to my willpower hah.

My only advice to you is to eat healthy..Up the protein a bit since you are working out too!

I'm somewhat concerned by the fact that you are trying to lose weight after giving birth a baby almost three months ago and that fact that you are breastfeeding, you shouldn't be restricting calories.. baby needs it!! The weight doesn't always come off after having children..

Anyway, congrats again on your baby and good luck!

There was a time in my life that I believed to be fat. I was only 110 pounds. I lost alot of weight and I started to get stretch marks. 3 years later I still have them.

People will lie to you and tell you that if you use any type of lotion they will go away, but that is not true. The lotions only help you prevent them, meaning if you don't want any stretch marks and don't have any then you can put on the creams. They will actually prevent them. Because your skin is moisturized. On the other hand if you already have them and you are trying to get rid of them you have a problem. Once they are there they are there for good. It takes time to finally accept it, but after you get used to seeing them you get over it.

The fact of the matter is that most woman have stretch marks due to weight gain or weight lose or pregnancy. There are some that don't and some that lie about it.

Be you because whoever loves you or is going to love you is not going to care. Most men don't care about the marks. We women on the other hand judge ourselves and others who have them. I will never understand why women spend so much time judging each other. I think it has to do with lack of confidence.

Remember be free and be happy.Laughing

Right on the point.. great post!

I find myself afraid of getting more but it's part of life.. you have children; you may get them.. you lose or gain weight; you'll get 'em!
