hmm, not to be a negative nancy or anything, but i noticed that a few of you want to maintain at ridiculously low weights, i.e. weights that would put you in the underweight and perhaps even the severely underweight category. i would seriously reconsider that idea. as great as it is to look thin, it is better to look, feel and be healthy. i'm just putting that out there and wish you all the best of luck with your weight goals. i think the overall aim should be to be healthy, so be careful in your endeavors! |

| Weight Gain | dealing with hunger? | Dec 09 2008 18:51 (UTC) |

hi there, i'm also a fellow weight gainer, although i have not had to deal with ED thoughts or anything like that, but i know what you mean. when i began upping my calories to 2500, i got hungrier so much more quicker to the point that i felt like i was eating every hour. if i'm correct, people gaining weight, regardless of ED or not, get hungrier as they eat more especially if they're underweight. this is because the more food you eat, the more fuel you are getting for your body, something that it's not used to. if you have been eating very little in the past, your metabolism has slowed down and the new amounts of food and energy "jumpstart" your metabolism. essentially, your body is using up all the "extra" energy because it has been starving, making you more hungry. hopefully this helps and sorry that it's so convoluted - it's hard to explain since i'm a little confused about topics concerning metabolism. the important thing is to keep eating and to listen to your hunger cues! eat your planned meals, but if you're still hungry, keep eating. your body knows what it's doing. however, since you're concerned about binging, i would try to stick with a plan. i have this problem too - not binging exactly, but not eating enough in the day and then just eating mechanically at night to fulfill my calorie goal. it's a bit scary because i sometimes feel like i can't stop myself from eating, even though i'm not all that hungry. i guess i just want to get the gain over with. anyhow, good luck! hopefully others will respond with better answers than mine! |

| Weight Loss | How do I eat a low amount of suagr? | Dec 09 2008 00:59 (UTC) |

yeah, i thought that natural sugars were ok to have. i don't usually count that in my sugar intake. and to add to the question, how would exercise affect sugar intake? my mom told me that people that exercise don't have to worry so much about sugar since that's used for energy. of course, that doesn't mean that one should go overboard... so, suggestions: instead of buying flavored yogurts, get plain and add fruit or honey (even though these contain sugar, they amount to less) cut back on cold cereals go for low-carb foods with little sugar if you want to continue having packaged food |

ooh, that's a toughie. i think i've tried apple pie, cinnamon roll, pecan pie, cashew cookie, lemon bar, chocolate coconut, and cocoa mole. my favorite of these is probably either coca mole or chocolate coconut. my least is lemon bar, but i'm not really a fan of real lemon bars anyway. i first tried these bars in 10th grade during AIDS Walk LA, where they give out free food and samples along the walk. they had bars that were half the size of the originals and i grabbed a whole bunch. they were SO good. i still love 'em, but i haven't had one in ages. |

hmm, i realized that my previous post sounded quite defeatist :/ so, change of plans: i'm going to eat MORE then 2500 these next few days, hopefully 250+ more, even if i have to over-PB my toast or forcefeed myself ice cream. on the other hand, i'm trying to do this the healthy way, so as much as muffins and cookies have helped me in my endeavors these past few weeks, i'll try to limit them (unless i really need the cals/am feeling in a muffiny mood). all right, i'm off to put peanut butter in my banana oatmeal :) have a good day everyone! |

hellos, just dropping by to see how everyone's doing. it seems like most of you are doing just fine :) to all that are having a hard time though, things can only get better! so after two or so days of increasing, i started to find it harder to eat more. it's bizarre because i barely reached my pre-increase calories of 2500 and felt so full and bad in general. i don't understand it - it's like i don't want to eat anymore. it's fine in the morning/day when i'm feeling hungry and eat, but after dinner, with a couple hundred more cals to go, i just end up feeling nauseas. also, i've been bloaty like my tummy's full of air, which also hinders the eating. does anyone know what's causing that or if there's anything i can do/take? luckily, there's peanut butter and muffins and whatnot to help out. even so, i've only been eating 2500 for the last two days. bleh. i'll have to weigh myself soon to see if i'm managing to gain on this because perhaps i am? one last thing: i know that it's hard to have a positive look on body image, but i just think that the reason i want to gain is so i look better and also so i'm stronger. thus, feeling "large" is probably a good sign. plus, mirrors don't always tell the truth. on another note, i feel like all the weight i've gained has gone to my lower half (happy that a bit of that is in the bum, hehe). i'm generally okay with that, except, when is it going to redistribute to my top half? that's the area that i felt needed the weight...i look rather disproportionate, haha. ok, gang, keep strong! good night! |

hey peeps, just checkin' in. i might even have time for replies! clay - i actually don't trust online counters all that much, except the problem is that i think that they overestimate, so i compensate for that. yikes. i run 5-6 days a week, depending on practices and such. 2-3 days are interval days, so not very high mileage. on the other days, i run easy distance (so 5-6 miles). even though i know i probably shouldn't rely on calculators, i had used them to figure out how much i was burning so that i could eat that back. don't actually know how accurate the calculations were though. however, i'm learning to trust my body, even though i feel like my body must be insane or running on overdrive since i have to eat so much. maybe i'm not eating enough nutritionally? by the way, i really enjoy your metaphors :) also, dark chocolate sorbet all the way! dolly - good for you! eat whatever you want because your body is telling you that it needs it! lady - that pancake topping sounds excellent. you know what else is awesome? vanilla yogurt and peanut butter. i've had it on one of those frozen eggo waffles (except i toasted it of course, haha) and it's amazing. i credit my roommate for that idea though. actually, a spoonful of PB in vanilla yogurt is great by itself too. if you can find banana-flavored yogurt, even better. lala - i agree with ladydanger's mum (ooh, that was so british! lol) aqua - my grammie used to make savory porridge, but i was never a fan. however, i believe she used eggs and milk. probably salt too. maybe add some chopped up ham in there (if you're not veggie that is)... also, i'm not sure if you'd know, but could hypermetabolism happen to just anyone who really upped their cals? because i'm not gaining, but i'm not losing either. (which is why i'm upping!) obsessive - congrats on the period! you're moving on healthwise, so don't give up! i hope you're having a good time in siberia and that things, foodwise, will get better for you! dang, i'm spending way too much time here. i really need to do work. curse you, organic chemistry! |

thanks gibbit! i guess i thought the 2500 minimum didn't apply to me. what i had been doing was looking up what i burned when sedentary using cc's tools, then adding in any exercise, and then the extra 500, which totaled 2500. i didn't realize that i should have been eating 2500 sedentary. it seemed to have worked...at first. i shall uppity up then! also, gibbet, i remember some of the meals that you posted and i thought it looked like more than 3000 since i seem to be able to reach 3000 on what seemed like less food. but that was a digression. i think that it's insane (in a good way) that you could maintain on that much. have fun at the party! charlie - i'm from cali too! however, i currently go to school on the east coast. i think i've gotten a bit used to the cold though. it was 40 degrees the other day and i was like, "yes! warmth!" haha. it's great fun coming home for winter break and not being bothered by the weather when everyone's complaining about the cold. :) mashed - i hope your mom gets better! also, i hope that muffin was scrumptious ;) dolly - hmm, i think mashed made some good suggestions for you. bars are always helpful and there are tons of good sandwich ideas out there (like that tofu one). how about just a regular ol' PB and banana sammich? that's easy enough and will help with increasing calories. or if you think slicing up a banana will take too much time, have PB with honey (SO GOOD) or jam. there's also avocado sandwiches, cheese, hummus, ooh, and i just thought of an interesting combo - PB and raisin! the possibilities are endless. good luck! slr - great job with your attitude! and don't worry about eating too much cereal - i eat kashi golean crunch! by the cupfuls! clay - i tend to eat more at night too, although i'm trying to teach myself to spread out the food more. still, if i want something, i'll have it. anyhow, i don't really think eating a lot at night will hurt you. i've always thought that the idea of eating before bed making you fat was suspicious. since you're a guy, you should be eating more anyway (some would say that that's lucky). ok, back to studying. bleh. |

AGRU: yeah, i know...i guess i'm still grappling with how i'm able to eat as much as i'm eating and not gain because it doesn't make sense to me. sorry about being repetitive - it just helps me put my thoughts out and see where i'm going and what i should do. thanks for the push though. it may be silly, but i suppose i needed clarification and someone to tell me what i should do - i'm no nutrition expert and that's a fact. also, i've been weighing myself once a week and not just after that one meal. nonetheless, thanks for the reminder. a question for you though: how is everything going for you? are you still managing 3000 calories? you've been so helpful here and i appreciate the advice you give. i hope all is well with life, etc! |

hey ladydanger, i get what you're feeling. i think i eat 10 times more than anyone else, but the thing is, they're not trying to gain weight. actually, i don't have an ED and i feel like i eat so much more than some of the ED recoverers here (i'm not pointing fingers, i'm just sayin'...). there's no way to know how many calories you're eating unless you also post the portions though, so i can't really judge. just don't worry and keep eating. i think maybe you should cut down on vegetables and low calorie, high bulk foods for now so that you don't feel as stuffed. admittedly, this doesn't work for me - i get hungry no matter how much i eat. it's like my body knows EXACTLY how many calories i'm eating, regardless the bulk of the food, haha. to help you out, here's what i ate today (i'm probably not the best example to follow since i eat quite frequently and end up eating more snacks than i do meals): breakfast: toast with cream cheese and honey; about 1 1/2 oz of smoked almonds snack: (this was like 1/2 hr after a late breakfast) chocolate lunch: english muffin, half with PB, half with swiss cheese; cup of cheerios snack: a munchkin donut (random - they had free donuts and coffee at the music/movie store i was at); poptart with glass of milk snack (yes, again): PB and honey on toast; odwalla food bar dinner (planned): pita stuffed with egg, hummus, and green beans; apple snack (planned):cottage cheese with half a banana and graham cracker; possibly some pita chips and hummus if i'm still hungry (which if i'm not, i probably will be) this is around 2500 calories and i didn't go running today. honestly, the amount of food i eat is worrisome to me. i mean, i don't mind eating this much, but i feel like it's abnormal. why doesn't anyone else eat this much? i'd starve if i ate any less...do you guys think i just have a fast metabolism? because i don't really know what my metabolism was like before i started xc running in high school. i always thought i had a normal one, but i get hungry so easily. sometimes i think i''m not actually hungry and i just feel like eating...i wouldn't call it binging or overeating, exactly, although i might eat a whole bunch of cereal in one sitting - i know what i'm doing and i don't feel guilty...just concerned about my metabolism, etc. i don't know. i'll try not to worry until after i gain my last 4 pounds. woot woot! by the way, i don't seem to have gained anything after eating a massive thanksgiving dinner and upping my calories by 100-200. how long does it take to see the weight gain o_O? |

Yay Thanksgiving (belated, I know)! Thanks for the encouragement guys! I suppose you're right - gaining is gaining, although I am trying to be more healthy about it. Anyhow, I hope everyone (namely the Americans...) had a fantastic Thanksgiving and that fear foods and ED/gaining thoughts were conquered! I go to school on the East Coast, but home is California, so I stayed on campus for the holiday break. For Thanksgiving though, the head proctor of my dorm last year (who is now graduated and works here as the adviser of student activities) invited anyone staying on campus who would like to come to Thanksgiving dinner at her apartment and be with friends to have Thanksgiving with her. It was really nice of her and I had a lot of fun. I got to hang out with friends and meet new people. Also, seeing her apartment makes me excited about becoming an "adult" - she is such an amazing person and has the cutest home ever complete with a spice rack holding a vast quantity of spices, haha. The food was great too. I had: appetizers (chocolate plate, carrots and hummus, crackers and tuna salad, brie, homemade chocolate dipped cranberry nut biscotti with chocolate raspberry coffee...yum), brown sugar-brined turkey, bread stuffing (donated by the dining hall), honey baked lentils, honey chipotle sweet potato spears, cumin and turmeric cauliflower, and pumpkin risotto. It was a lot of food, but I managed to have a bit of each and was SO full by the end of it. We all had food comas, haha. Of course, we still managed dessert. There were three kinds of tarts to choose from (my ex-head proctor is amazing and baked them all): orange zest mascarpone with cranberry sauce, peppermint chocolate, and pumpkin with whipped cream. I had the pumpkin, but I tried a bite of the peppermint chocolate too. This may have been the best Thanksgiving ever. I really enjoyed everyone's company and we played games and talked all night. Hilarious times. Anyhow, enough about me. Now that it's the day after Thanksgiving, I hope everyone will keep up the eating and not feel guilty about the feast they had the night before. Good job and good luck all! |

Hello everyone! Welcome to all the new posters here! I haven't been posting much lately due to the load of work I've got, but it's finally Thanksgiving break, so thank goodness for that! No new gains lately...I'm thinking it's because I'm eating around 2500 without factoring in exercise...I'm maybe 4 pounds away from the end though, so is it too late to change my intake? I'm just worried that I haven't been eating enough to get the metabolism into tip-top shape. Other than that, the eating's been okay. My problem is that I always feel like I have to save up cals for the night and I look forward to my nighttime snacking. However, this is probably not good if I want to improve my eating habits and eat normally (i.e. not a billion snacks a day). Also, I'm worried that I've been eating too much sugar. Like way too much. Sorry for spurting out all my problems... I guess I'm just afraid of developing eating problems... But, everyone here is doing wonderfully with following eating plans and stuff. I just eat my meals and also when I feel stressed about gaining... |

| Health & Support | Is anyone else REALLY bad at intuitive eating? | Nov 15 2008 05:50 (UTC) |

my problem is that i ALWAYS seem to be hungry, but i try to ignore it when i know that i shouldn't be hungry since i just ate. it gets harder at night though. right now, i'm trying to gain a bit of weight, but i'm also trying to slow the weight gain a little since i'm nearing my goal weight. that's why i want to learn how to be an intuitive eater, so that when it comes time to maintain, it won't be so much of a struggle. i do agree that thinking about an allotted amount of food is a culprit though, but i don't really see any way around it... |

hello everyone, thanks for the replies :) wow, there's so many posts...it's a bit overwhelming, haha. i'll try to reply to some though - can't always be so self-centered. gibbit - i find that when i eat A LOT before bed, i tend to get night sweats. this doesn't happen all the time though. i guess i never really gave much background info about myself, haha. well, to be honest, i'm a bit underweight (bmi of about 17.9). also, i'm a cross country and track runner and started running in high school when i lost a lot of weight without even realizing it. i gained a lot of it back though. i think i started out 98 pounds at 5' 1"? then i went down to 90. i'm 18 now and in the last year, i gained 5 pounds back. however, i could use some more poundage because i think i would look better and be a better athlete. coming from a family of relatively small chinese people, i suppose my small frame is inherited. i would also like boobs and a more booty :) unfortunately, these don't seem to be in the genetics... slr - hey i think we have similar stats or at least the same height anyway :) i really like your attitude towards gaining - it's really awesome and you're making a great example for everyone. how's the gaining going by the way? spek - you're doing really well! i know it's hard with all these physical side effects, but you'll be better really really really soon! mashed - looks like you're going to need 2500 cals soon. this may be a scary number, but i found that once i started eating that much, it really doesn't seem like that much. in fact, i worry that eating anything less won't be enough for me in the future and wonder how people aren't starving...anyway, good job with the foodies! you're making progress! falling - yay! congrats! lala - you look good in that photo ;) afon - yay for reaching your cal goal! aqua - don't think that you're not worth it. you ARE worth it! okie - sometimes all we can do is say, "i tried and did my best, but tomorrow is another day." and you're going to ace that day! clay - hot chocolate and oatmeal? boy, i've been having that since this summer. however, the strawberries sound like a yummy addition :) good luck and have fun! dolly - hmm, you ARE going to see your doctor again soon right? what you're describing seems a bit worrisome - i know i'd be worried :/ nonetheless, you're doing great! keep it up! you'll be hitting 2500 in no time :) and a bit about invisible calories: i find it hard to eat them, basically. haha. i don't know, i guess it's because i get hungry pretty easily and actually want to eat something that will fill me up...of course, this then leads to me eating lots and lots of cereal. so if you're finding it hard to eat because you get full fast, i'd recommend munching on things that aren't very filling (cinnamon toast crunch being an example...well, at least for me). oh and one more thing - is it fiber that makes you bloated? because i've been finding that after eating a big meal like lunch or dinner, i feel bloaty-full. like i'm empty, but full and can still eat, except i would get even more bloaty. ok, i should do some homework now... |

hey, looks like everyone's making some kind of improvement :) yay! ok, i've got a couple of questions...first, who here has their hunger signals back? i've never really lost mine (i'm gaining due to non-ED reasons) and since eating more, they've multiplied :/ and i'm also a "night eater" - i eat the bulk of my calories at night. i know i should probably break out of this habit, but that's when i feel the most hungry. it's like i'm insatiable and i'm really hoping that this is unrelated to night eating syndrome or something. it could be that i'm not eating enough in the day though and i hope that's the reason... and second question: i know that girls should have about 3 glasses of milk a day for the calcium, but i don't really drink milk that much. i get most of my calcium from yogurt and cheese. is that okay? is there a difference? yeah, sorry about that. anyway, in the last hour or so, i ate a whole bunch of cereal and snacks, haha. i think i had like a cup of life cereal, a cup of kashi golean crunch!, and also a homemade granola bar, some chips, and chocolate pudding. almost a binge... i'm trying not to worry about this though. hopefully, when i'm at a better weight, i can ween myself of this habit. i think i mainly eat so much at night because that's when i get thoughts like, "i would look so much better if i gained a bit of weight." and i'm not going to lie - the idea of being able to maintain on a decent amount of calories is appealing too :) yay for speeding up metabolisms! ooh, another nice breakfast/snack idea: make some apple cinnamon oatmeal (either from an instant flavor packet or cut up apples, cinnamon, brown sugar, and oatmeal). then top off with cottage cheese! |

Hey guys, I've been quite busy lately (but still hitting my calorie goal and maybe even going over!), so I can't go on and reply as much. I'm still following the thread though! So, I think I've put on a pound (hopefully it will stay), but even though I'm gaining, I'm feel like I still look the same. There IS, however, one pair of pants that seem to be tighter... Anyway, I just wanted to share this DELICIOUS breakfast I had the other day :) - I call it Hot Cinnamon Banana and Peanut Butter Cereal Pudding! I sliced up a banana, tossed in some cinnamon, microwaved the whole thing for about 45 - 60 seconds and then spooned in some peanut butter. I topped this steaming concoction off with some Honey Nut Cheerios and instant deliciousness :) Oh and Gibbit, where might I find your recipe for homemade poptarts? Sounds awesome! Keep it up everyone! Food is NOT the enemy. Just remember how yummy it can be... |

hey guys, i know i shouldn't worry/think about this now, but if anyone could give me an answer, it would relieve me a bit. so i've mentioned being hungry all the time and i understand that i have to listen to my body and eat (which i've been doing). however, i don't know if i'm hearing the signals correctly. i wonder if i'm just eating and am not really hungry. it may be fine for now, but what about in the future? also, i've been eating 2500 or more each day and i don't seem to be having any trouble, meaning i'm actually hungry for all 2500 calories. does this mean my body's adapted to this intake? will i maintain on this in the future? or if i DO decrease to maintain, will i still feel as hungry? thanks a lot guys and i hope this post isn't getting anyone else worried or anything. this just really pertains to a non-recoverer... |

OMG I ate SO MUCH today. most of it was probably not very nutritious, but i'm trying to tell myself that IT'S OKAY! i do have a goal of trying to eat less junk though. i want to gain weight, but i also want to gain health too. brunch (my school only serves brunch and dinner on the weekends): 2 maple walnut pancakes with 1/4 c lowfat vanilla yogurt a bowl of fruit salad (cantaloupe and pineapple - i don't like watermelon or honeydew) a small cinnamon roll snack cup of life cereal (i'm addicted to this stuff) apple corn muffin dinner salad with black bean hummus brazilian chicken soup broccoli 2 slices of toast with hot fudge sauce :) snack another cup of life cereal bag of stacy's pita chips (SO GOOD) chai tea latte made with skim milk before bed yet another cup of life cereal (i really need to stop eating this...) blueberry muffin large vegan maple walnut muffin
i am stuffed. however, i also get that bloaty feeling after i'm done eating a meal, except i interpret it as dissatisfaction/hunger. i'm afraid that i'm still reading my body's signals wrong though. like, i always have to eat a cup of cereal after i eat dinner because i just feel so...empty? i don't understand it. i would just really like to be able to eat intuitively once i'm done here. i'm worried that eating a weight gainer's diet has messed up my eating. like, i'm always hungry, except i'm not sure whether or not i'm actually hungry or if my body's just used to eating at the time or something. argh. so i'm like 1000 over the usual. yesterday i had 3200 calories, about 700 more than usual. i feel really really awful, but at the same time, i'm thinking, "well, the sooner i reach my goal, the better." it's quite frustrating. also, a question. should i follow cc's calculation of how much to eat when sedentary or should i pretend i'm still a kid and eat more than that, even though it's not that much of a difference? i'm only 5' 1", but i'm really hoping i have another inch or two left in me :) dana - for me, i started out eating 2700 calories minus exercise to gain the first 2 weeks, then went down to 2200 calories a week, but since i only weighed myself after a month, i don't know my weekly gain. i think i averaged about a pound or a little more a week. also, i think that it's good that you're able to eat 3 big meals a day. i eat every 2 hours, sometimes every 1 1/2 hours because i get so hungry and i'm worried about making this a habit. i know i shouldn't think about maintenance, but i keep thinking that i'll be hungry eating maintenance since i'm so used to eating more and at certain times a day. |

hey guys, i was wondering if any of you get this, but i always feel like the day after i eat a ton over my cal goal, i'm so much hungrier. like yesterday, i had about 2700 calories, 200 over what i normally have. then today, i had: a yummy brunch plain yogurt + cottage cheese + maple syrup + kashi golean crunch! + strawberries <3 cantaloupe, kiwi coffee made with soymilk and then a snack/late lunch chocowalla odwalla food bar life cereal mixed with golden grahams a yellow apple then half an hour later (at 3:30), i was still STARVING. so i had another 2 cups of dry cereal (one of golden grahams and the other of cinnamon toast crunch) and some more kashi golean. yes, it's a terrible habit of mine - snacking on cereal, which might explain why i'm never satisfied. cereal is just NOT filling. anyway, i was still hungry, so at about 4, i ate 250 cals worth of honey roasted cashews. so now i'm up to 1800 calories, which is good, but i just don't understand why i get so hungry! am i not eating properly? would it be better to eat real food as opposed to cereal? i don't know. maybe my metabolism is really really speeding up, but i don't know why it would now. |

i consider myself to still be a kid, but if i were to steal other kids' candy, i would definitely go for twix, kit kat, and any form of dark chocolate :) |

On that note, what's the recommended intake for sugar? Actually, I know that there really isn't a "recommended amount" (at least from what I've seen) and that the less, the better, but is there a certain amount that people shouldn't go over? |

hello :) i've noticed a lot of people mentioning that they eat most of their calories at night. i'm the same way too, but i've been wanting to change that because i do it to save calories. for some reason, i worry that something unexpected will come up and i'll eat more than i wanted to, which is silly of course. actually, now that i think about it, it's really not that much...usually not more than 1000 anyway. also, i just like snacking when i study in the evening :) basically, i don't think it matters when you eat the bulk of your calories. at least, i haven't seen any bad side effects yet. speaking of which, about those night sweats...i've gotten them a couple of times, but i'm not sure if it's a sign that my metabolism is speeding up or anything. the thing is, i feel like i usually get night sweats when i go to bed after eating a lot, which makes sense since my poor digestive system has to labor all night processing the food. what other signs signify a speeding metabolism? |

i also agree with the above, but all this talk about age and weight made me think of something. if someone had an ed at a young age, like 14 or whatever age they're still growing, but don't begin recovery until they're 18 (practically adult), are they still considered teens in regards to caloric requirement? i know 18 is still young, but it's a lot older than 14 and is usually when girls are close to maturity. anyway, just a thought. |

hi everyone! thanks for the advice about maintenance! i think i'll keep eating and gaining, at least until i reach my highest weight and maintain there to see how i feel before keeping on. last night, even though i was full and not very hungry, i kept eating until i had about 2700 calories, 200 more than usual. i didn't finish eating all this until 2AM. this morning, i woke up ravenous and i've been hungry all day no matter how much i eat. what's going on? why am i hungry again? i would have thought that eating so much the day before would make me less hungry, but this does not seem to be the case... |
