Motivation 25 pounds of CAKE! Jun 24 2008

I say go for a decent workout for an hour or so, then take a little bigger than normal piece, and chow down.  Then get rid of the rest by taking it in to work with you.  You'll break even, you won't obsess over it, and most importantly, if you hold out hold out hold out...you'll break down and eat fifteen of the 25 pounds.  (At least I know I would if I were in your situation.)  I guess the best option is to not eat it all, but dang...cake is good, isn't it?  Give yourself a little bit - in the end it won't kill you - it just might slow progress a little bit.  As Marie Antoinette once said..."let them eat cake!"  Then she was beheaded...bad example... :o)   Good luck!

You all are so awesome and supportive!  thank you!  I"ll try to eat some more food, I think that might help me out a little bit - right now I am burning an extra thousand or so calories per day, so that means I do need to be eating some more nutritious and filling foods.  I totally dig on soup it feels like cheater food - apples not so much, but maybe a banana or some berries instead?

Hmmm... have you done all your stats?

How many calories are in vs. burn rate? There are alot of tools on this site that can give you information on tracking your calories as well as how much you should be eating vs. burn.

I ran your numbers:

BMR = 1429 (amount it takes to live)

Most people on this site set their activity to sedentary and then add back in the calories burned.

At sedentary your calories / day would be: 1429 X 1.2 = 1715.

However, if you are doing that much working - then you are burning some major calories and the acceptable different between what you eat vs. what you expend is between 500 to 1000 calories / day (1 to 2 lbs / week)

So, it may be that you are hungry because you ARE HUNGRY, but you might have to rethink your food choices. For instance with your dinner what about fruit. Is the rice - brown rice which as more of a fiber tends to make you feel fuller.

While it seems overly intensive at the beginning you start to get used to the logic of it and it gets easier.

Good Luck...

Thank you!  come to think of it after I posted, I remembered I dug into the fridge and chowed on about a half cup of fresh raspberries, and that kind of curbed it.  I'm still on white rice because  I have one of those huge vats of white rice I need to eat first - teacher salary in the summer time...but next time I buy, I"m going for the brown rice - I already switched to whole grain pasta, and I'm pretty used to it now.

According to the Harris Benedict Scale your BMR is 1429.55 and if you are exercising 6 to 7 days a week that makes your calories to maintain your current weight  2465.97375 and with a 500 calorie deficit you should eat 1967 calories a day as long as you are active 6 to 7 days a week.....now most people say when they are so close to their goal weight that their bodies can only handle a 500 calorie deficit..sometimes it can take your body 4 to 6 weeks to adjust to a new number..so I would recommend giving it a try..Good luck!

Wow!  1967 calories I can eat???  Whoo hoo!  Sounds like cawilder was right - I'm hungry because I'm HUNGRY!  I just thought it was all a normal part of the process to be hungry and grumpy and have your stomach growl all the time.  I don't know what kind of math I was doing - I guess I just took the 1429 and thought that was all I could eat regardless of my activity in order to lose weight.  I'm pretty new to this - 4 to 6 weeks?  That's painful!  I hope it doesn't take that long.Surprised   I'm pretty darn impatient...thanks for your advice!!

I'm using it the activity log, but I'm only logging in the big things like bike rides, etc.  I really like the feature because there are so many different kinds of exercise I do - it's hard for me to go to the gym.   I did the same thing, too and set myself at sedentary, but the little number thing always says I'm not burning enough - is there an activity listed for that base amount of calories you need to eat in order to live?  Should I be adding in all of that, too?  I'm a little lost on the activity thing.  Also, I feel like it might be a bit off - I rode my bike at a moderate pace for two hours, and then when I recorded the activity, it said I burned like 1100 calories...I didn't feel like I worked that hard.  (But hey, I'll take it!)

So what I'm still a bit lost on is the eating/deficit thing.  Are you saying that if I eat 1200 calories, I should still try and burn 500 extra ones by running or biking or something?  Or does that mean I eat 1200 but I "get" 500 extra ones because I work out?  Should  I cut completely back to 1200?  My fiancee says that we should go to the gym in the mornings and get in a full work out and then go and do whatever outdoor fun stuff we want to do on top of a 2 hour workout.  I still haven't made it that far, yet!  I think he thinks I'm kind of lazy because I have times in my summer vacation where I would like to sleep in until 8am and watch an episode of Deadliest Catch before I make it out of the house.  Anyway, bottom line is I agree with you - I don't think I'm eating enough - I don't feel like I'm getting enough energy - but the whole point is to eat less and exercise more, right?

Totally normal!  Your body is getting rid of all kinds of good, icky stuff! Since it's that time you might retain it for a while longer, but you should feel better later on.  I drink crazy amounts of water because I live in a dry climate.  Remember, the instant you feel thirsty, you're already dehydrated.  I know there's all kinds of drama going on around Nalgene bottles with the cancer thing (completely bogus by the way), but they are awesome to tote around all day.  They remind you to drink up, and the bottle gets lighter the faster you drink it, so you don't have to huck around as much weight! Laughing   Ha!
