Fitness So...I've been jogging for a month now... Aug 08 2008

Yeah, this happened to me too. It was because I ate more because jogging made me hungrier. Jogging isn't any good for weight loss anyway, so I quit that, and started lifting weights instead. Much improved.

Health & Support Can a laxative cause this? Aug 06 2008
15:58 (UTC)
2

Yes, it's the laxative. Laxatives are a strong stimulant for your bowels, and you just freaked them out. Your bowels are spasming, which is going to give you nausea and loose stools. Drink lots of water, take it easy, don't eat anything crazy or do anything drastic.

If you don't feel better within the next day or so (after which time, the laxative should be out of your system), then go to the doctor. If you are in real pain (which could indicate a serious condition), go to urgent care.

I used to get this kind of reaction to laxatives all the time when I had undiagnosed irritable bowel syndrome with constipation. It sucks, a lot, and laxatives make it worse.

Fitness How often do you increase the weight with free weights? Aug 06 2008

First, congrats on going up in weights! I lift free weights pretty much exclusively, and the way that I gauge when it's time to go up in weights is if I can do more than 15 reps of an exercise with good form and control. If I can do less than 6 reps, the weight might be a bit too heavy. If I can't do 5 reps with good control at all, the weight is DEFINITELY too heavy. How often you go up is a very personal thing, based on a lot of factors, including how often and how hard you lift, what your diet is like, etc., but I generally go up in weights every 3-4 weeks.

Regarding the look of your muscles, there is absolutely nothing you can do to change the way that your muscle is structured. It'll grow (or shrink) the way it's going to grow, and no exercise can change it.

Also, don't worry about getting "bulky" because of big muscles. It's nearly impossible without taking steroids and spending several hours lifting weights every day. The vast majority of women who are serious about lifting weights don't end up looking like Arnold. They end up looking seriously smoking hot, with toned and beautiful figures.

The reason a lot reps at light weight don't work for you is because they don't work at all. Period. It's a myth, perpetuated by stupid people who don't know what they are talking about, and who want to soothe women who are unnecessarily afraid of getting "bulky".

Keep in mind that typically, women who lift and look "bulky", look this way not because their muscles are too big, but because they are fat. They lose the fat, and voila, no more "bulky".

Edit: Melkor said it more succinctly than I could. I'm a woman also, btw, if that helps.

"If she's afraid of 'bulking up', explain the 'low weight, high rep' concept to her."

This is actually wrong. It's really really hard to bulk up if you are a woman, regardless of what you do. She would have to be lifting heavy weights for a couple hours every day, and probably taking steroids in order to build visible muscle bulges, and even then, it may not happen at all.

To look toned, she needs to lift heavy weights. Low weight, high rep does NOTHING. It doesn't build muscle, it doesn't make you look toned. It just wastes time and energy, like cardio.

Maybe she likes walking. Don't dis it. In terms of calorie burning, though, walking isn't especially effective. Walking at a normal pace for 1 mile burns maybe 65 calories.

What are you tired of, exactly? The dieting? The exercise?

Weight Loss Fat loss? Aug 01 2008

It's not about body type, as in "there are X types, and you are type Y". It's about YOUR BODY. Everyone is different, and there's no predicting it.

I lose fat in my belly first, and then my neck, arms and face, and my thighs last.

Weight Loss cardio +strength training - how many calories do I eat?? Aug 01 2008
21:59 (UTC)

Sounds like a fine plan.

Eating your maintenance calorie intake or a little bit less should be just fine. As long as you aren't in a very deep calorie deficit, and you are actively working out, your body will build muscle. If you are a woman, it'll be a bit harder for you to "bulk up", so don't worry about that.

Key to the process is good protein intake (40% of your calories), and adequate recovery time for your muscles. Don't work the same muscles two days in a row. At this stage, it's not rocket science, and it's hard to go wrong.

You can't permanently mess up your metabolism, but if you aren't careful, you'll lose muscle rather than fat, which will make you gain even more when you go off the diet.

Squats. Definitely. Hate Hate Hate Squats. Even after I'm done, I still hate them. Only reason I'm happy is because they are over with, and it'll be another week before I have to do them again.

Your regimen seems a little excessive to me. Are you seeing results? For abs, I do hanging leg/hip raises. 3 sets of 8, once a week. Holy cow they kill, but they work.

Ok, this is gross.

When I had my wisdom teeth out, I had to irrigate the holes with this little syringe full of water. One day, I ate a burger, and then cleaned out the holes after, and there was at least an ounce of burger that came out of my holes.

I doubt that's your situation though. In any case, as the first poster said, if you put it in your mouth in the first place, it should already be accounted for in your counts.

Also, if you are obsessing about food stuck between your teeth and the impact on  your diet, you have far greater mental health problems than physical health problems.

Fitness morning run advice Jul 27 2008

No, that's not true, but it's beside the point.

Short answer: If you are underweight, you should do the following two things:

1. Eat more.

2. Lift heavy weights, regulary.

I assume that you understand that your running is burning lots of calories, and that if you don't eat enough, you will stay scrawny, or get scrawnier. Your body won't divert energy to build muscle if you don't give it enough to sustain your activities. Building muscles is a low priority (as opposed to, you know, keeping your organs functioning), so you have to give your body enough energy cushion (food) and the impetus to do so (lifting).

Foods Does anyone eat low-cal/fat-free whip cream .. by itself? Jul 25 2008

Original Post by beanaparker:

2) I think a "tablespoon" is very small. I usually take good sized spoonfulls and count them as tablespoons...but i dont think that's right. There should be a total of 68 tablespoons per tub of coolwhip free...I only get about 40-50 spoonfulls out of it i think....   So you might want to watch your tablespoons.     BTW, what exactly IS a tablespoon? I have trouble with peanut butter too. Do you fill the spoons up evenly across the top part, or do you take a "heaping" spoonful???

Typically, the serving sizes are accompanied by the weight in grams. CC pegs 2 tbsp of Cool Whip Free as 9 grams. This is the measure you want to look at. Get a kitchen scale, tare the empty spoon, and give your serving a weigh. No more guesswork.

Weight Gain alarming rate of weight gain Jul 23 2008
13:27 (UTC)

According to the BMI tool, you could stand to gain at least 20lb (9kg) before you are out of the woods. The bottom end of healthy weight for your height is approx 140lb (65kg).

As others have said, the weight gain will slow down and stop as you approach a healthy weight. In order to avoid looking "plump" as you put it, when you gain weight, you must put on lean muscle mass rather than pure fat. Begin a weight training regimen (under the advice of your doctor, of course) to start to re-build your body.

Don't do cardio at this stage!

Health & Support Struggling with a supressed eating disorder... Jul 22 2008

According to the BMI tool, 5'8" at 135lb is a BMI of 20.5, which is the lower end of the healthy weight spectrum.

You don't need to lose weight. If you want to safeguard against gaining weight, do some resistance training to build muscle and improve your metabolism so you don't need to worry so much about what you eat. You'll look better, too.

Fitness To polarize or not? Runners? Jul 22 2008

Original Post by ehp1975:

I actually hate polarized lenses, but I'm wondering if they were just done improperly or the technology has improved (I got mine 3-5 years ago).  But the ones I had threw off my depth-perception and made everything very reflective.  I also think they gave me headaches (which I normally never get).  I think it's a personal preference.  But I'm guessing that a local eye doctor or sunglass store would have a pair that you could try on to see what you think.  Just make sure you try them outside before you buy them--if all looks good, then they're probably a good investment for you.

Sounds like they did it wrong. It's supposed to both improve your depth perception and make things LESS reflective. I bet the lenses were at off angles to each other.

I used to get those, and it turned out to be panic attacks brought on by GI discomfort (gas putting pressure on my esophagus). It felt like I couldn't breathe, which would freak me out. I was afraid I was having a heart attack.

Went to the emergency room a couple of times, with two clear EKGs, before I figured out what was going on. Definitely a good idea to get it checked out, though, to eliminate the possibility.

Gold standard of measuring food is by weight. Get yourself a kitchen scale and all your problems will be solved.

Barring that, go by the fractional bag units. The bag is weighed, while individual nuts can vary in size/weight wildly. To specifically answer your question, you got two servings worth.

Fitness Getting annoyed... Jul 15 2008

2nding what everyone said, but keep in mind that the reason that you are pissed is not because she didn't show, per-se, but that you changed your schedule for her, and then she didn't show.

The obvious solution is for you to NOT CHANGE YOUR SCHEDULE. If she wants to work out with you, she can join you, as others suggested. But, don't give her any more control over your schedule.

There is a difference between being a good friend (letting her join your workouts) and bending over backward and letting her walk all over you (changing your schedule, being at her whim, beck, and call). If you set better boundaries and protect yourself first, you will both be a lot happier.

Foods wholewheat/wholemeal vs white.. will the brown stuff help me lose weight quicker? Jul 14 2008
21:44 (UTC)
Original Post by gi-jane:

A slice of wholemeal bread contains the same calories as a slice of white bread.  But the extra fibre and less refined nature of the wholemeal means that it takes a lot longer to digest and doesn't spike the blood-sugars the same as white.  Result.... you are satisfied on slightly less food plus you don't feel like eating again quite so quickly afterwards.

Strictly speaking it is your total intake of calories that has resulted in you losing weight. But your selection of wholegrains means that your calorie allowance has gone a lot further than it might have done.   People who reduce their calorie intake but retain a diet based around processed/refined foods tend to give up more quickly because their food isn't satisfying.

2nd this.

A lot of the calories you burn weight lifting are actually burned AFTER your workout is over (over the next 36-48 hours).

Yes, exactly. And you are building muscle

Not just that, though it's great to have more muscle. Resistance training has been shown to increase your metabolism for several hours after your session.

You should work on stretching. I usually get pretty tight chest muscles for a day or so after a chest workout, but stretching helps recover faster since it directs more blood to the area.
