| Young Calorie Counters | College Kids: Tired of the whole thing? | Oct 11 2009 01:34 (UTC) |

I'm a Junior and don't ever get drunk, but I sip drinks a little (usually only finish 1 drink if I go out) and it keeps people satisfied! Everyone else is usually too drunk to realize that I'm not drunk and if they see a drink in my hand, they just assume I'm drinking and it's no problem. Also, now that you're a sophomore, most of your friends will probably start exercising and eating a little healthier when they realize they've gained weight and their body shape has changed! I know a ton of my friends started working out once they hit sophomore year because the fun and excitement of something new (college) was gone, and they started realizing that they maybe weigh the same, but had gotten different, yucky shaped bodies from all of the drinking and bad food!
Just stick with it, later your friends will admire that you're stubborn and stick to your goals/plans and they will probably be joining in soon! |

| Weight Loss | How many pounds do you fluctuate in day? | Sep 23 2009 00:22 (UTC) |
4 |
I do, and I'm the same weight as you too. I weigh 156 in the morning, and at night am usually around 158. I tend to lose 2 pounds at night, so I know it's a problem if at night I weigh 160, then the next morning I'll weigh around 158 and then I get worried because it seems like I've gained 2 lbs! At that point I'm just careful the next few days and I go back to 156 pretty quick. Anyways, your weight fluctuations are completely normal. Watch your sodium in take if you ever seem to gain like 4-5 pounds in one day though! that could mean you're retaining water. |

| Weight Loss | Help! with a plateau | Sep 04 2009 18:20 (UTC) |

Eat a tiny bit more (aim for 1500-1650 calories) and change your exercise drastically. Like if you run for your cardio, go swimming instead, just do a completely different activity. Also more strength training helps, I'd recommend buying some work out DVD's that incorporate circuit training (like 2 minutes of cardio, then 2 minutes of strength, then repeat, etc.), those are usually the most effective! |

Walking to and from an outhouse is the same as just walking for like 5 minutes... so I bet if you walked at a slow speed (the speed you might walk if you were going to the outhouse) you really would burn 212 calories/hour... not that bogus. |

| Fitness | Strange Thigh Question | Jul 24 2009 01:31 (UTC) |

My right arm is bigger than my left arm, and my right calf is also bigger. I did gymnastics and was a lefty, so you would think my left leg would be the bigger, stronger one, and my left arm as well, but i think my left side was just leaner because i used it more often...
Anyways, I've told people about my calves being completely different sizes (like about 1.5 inches difference) and no one notices. I would say unless you have a difference of 2 inches or more, don't worry about it! Make sure you work out both sides equally though! |

| Weight Loss | Why don't people acknowledge a small weight loss? | Jul 20 2009 20:13 (UTC) |
12 |
Depending on the person, 10-15 pounds isn't enough to notice. When a person is 5'8 and weighs 200 pounds, the person doesn't look any different 15 pounds lighter, but when a 5'2 150 pound person loses 15 pounds, it's way more noticeable because of their small frame... sooo i don't know how much you weigh, but that's one explanation as to why no one seems to be noticing! It's also a different story when people don't think you need to lose weight in the first place, so they try not to encourage it.. |

| Weight Loss | Body fat percentage slowing weight loss down, help | Jul 18 2009 16:24 (UTC) |
1 |
The scale is going to be WAY more accurate than your measuring tape because the measuring tape doesn't allow for determining your muscle mass. the body fat scales send electric pulses through your feet, the electric pulses travel through your body, and then the scale receives them back, if the scale receives the electric pulses quickly, you have a lower body fat percentage because your muscle and all of your organs conduct electricity better than fat... so that's how the body fat scales work. Obviously they can't be the most accurate way to determine your body fat because it also takes your weight, height, and water percentage into account, but if I were you I would assume that your body fat might be closer to 50 than 34... On another note, if you're a teenager, most of the websites online won't be accurate for you because you're not old enough. Some methods and equations of determining your calories needed and BMI won't be accurate until you're at least 18 or older because your body may not be completely finished growing and changing. Here's a website where you can calculate your BMI if you're under 20. |

| Weight Loss | Counting Calories vs. Weight Watchers.. I need to choose and I want your help | Jul 15 2009 22:51 (UTC) |
2 |
I think counting calories will work better because like another poster said, it's more of a lifestyle change. Weight watchers costs money, and you probably don't want to be paying for weight watchers and going to the meetings and weigh ins for the rest of your life, but counting calories is something you can do easily for the rest of your life. Plus, once you've counted calories for a while, you get the jist of how many calories will be in what you're eating, even if you don't run home and look it up on CC. |

| Fitness | Run twice a day.... | Jul 14 2009 22:40 (UTC) |
1 |
You'll burn the same amount of calories but running twice a day won't affect your metabolism. Your metabolism is affected by building muscle and strength training... so unless you're running 1.5 miles of steep hills each time you run to build leg muscle, it shouldn't affect your metabolism at all. Running 1.5 miles twice a day should be better than running 3 miles once a day, long continuous runs supposedly eat away at your muscle mass, and short bouts of cardio are supposed to help preserve muscle mass while getting your cardio in. |

| Weight Loss | Hunger - Ok, someone explain this to me. | Jun 11 2009 00:49 (UTC) |
6 |
That happened to me when I started exercising more. I think it was my metabolism kicking in. When this happened to me, I did start eating more (but more healthy food, not sugary snacks or candy, usually fruit, string cheese, granola bars), and it was okay. I may have actually lost weight easier when I started eating just a little more, to keep my metabolism going on overdrive. If you're hungry, eat a small snack. As long as you're TRULY hungry, it doesn't matter that you eat... just make sure you really are as hungry as you think. Try drinking a glass of water when you get these hunger pangs and if after 15 minutes you're still hungry, then go for it! |

| Motivation | So positive and motivated for so long and then... | Jun 08 2009 00:17 (UTC) |
|
I had this problem too, but on a WAYYY larger scale. I kept up the healthy eating and exercising almost every day, for 8 months (july 08-february 09) and then came march 7, and I went out of town and couldn't exercise for a week, after that I consistently exercised less, only 30 min, then only 20, then counting walking my dog as exercise, etc. and by April, I wasn't working out at all. Now that it's June I've gained back 18 lbs. and am having a hard time trying to find my motivation again. I've just recently starting exercising more (every other day for 30 min.-- nothing compared to what I was doing in February!) and counting calories again, which is helping....
So like other posters have said, are you taking enough break time? you should allow your self two days a week as a break, but probably not two days in a row. I used to work out every day and have one day as a random break, like once a month or so, and that was way too much for me to handle and I burnt out eventually... It also might help to get on CC more often and just read other peoples problems and successes, etc. to get you in the mood to eat healthy and exercise.
Definitely DO NOT let this continue though! Or else you'll end up like me and 18 lbs. heavier! I was 5 lbs. away from my goal weight in February! |

Also, 1200 is the average, like because I'm 5'2 I can eat 1200 calories and not go into starvation mode, but being so tall, you need more, you should probably stick to the 1500. |

You're tall, so 1800 sounds right. Your body needs more calories to keep it running because being taller also means having more mass to keep moving. I'm only 5'2 and I burn 1600 sedentary, and around 1900 when lightly active. I've found that if I stick to calorie counts numbers I lose weight (like if I exercise every day to burn around 300 calories and eat 1800 calories, I lose weight). |

| Health & Support | Just Found Out I Have Severe Hyperthyroidism.. | May 12 2009 19:14 (UTC) |
|
I don't know from personal experience, but my mom had hyperthyroidism, and then she got it taken care of and now she has hypothyroidism. When she was hyperthyroid, she was extremely under weight (she's 5'6 and she weighed about 115 lbs. most of her life). Then she found out about her hyperthyroid and got it all fixed, and her problem turned into hypothyroidism. Now she takes a pill every day to keep her metabolism going, and has a definite weight problem. she's not like extremely fat, probably not even considered obese, but she could definitely lose like 30 lbs. and still be a healthy weight. (I don't know exactly how much she weighs cause she's pretty sensitive about it).
So anyways, from my experience with her, you have to be really careful about not turning hypo thyroid, and if you do gain weight, you may have to exercise a lot more to stay at a healthy weight, although if you already eat healthy and you must not be eating too much if you're 5'3 and 110 lbs, I would try not to change your eating habits! |

| Weight Loss | Fat arms..? | May 09 2009 21:07 (UTC) |
|
I have this same problem, but mine is that my arms are too muscular (I did gymnastics for 16 years and now I have massive man muscles) but anyways, I hardly do any strength exercises for my arms, and it seems to be working. I do occasional push ups, but no weights or arm machines at the gym, and my arms have definitely gotten smaller. This might not help you if you already don't have muscle in your arms... but I figured I'd offer my experience! |

| Weight Loss | Digital Scale or Steel Beam Scale, which is more accurate? | Apr 14 2009 21:13 (UTC) |
1 |
I also wondered this. I have three scales and one of them always reads 2-3 lbs. heavier than the other two, so i put my 6 lb. weights on each scale and sure enough, the one that reads 2-3 lbs. heavier said my 6 lb. weight was 8 lbs, but at least it was consistent. I think consistency is key and every scale is going to differ 2-5 lbs.
Also do make sure you weigh yourself at the same exact time every day on the same scale, wearing the same thing (or nothing). I weigh in the morning after I've gone to the bathroom with no clothes on and I get consistent readings of losing or gaining or whatever. When I weigh myself at night (even without clothes and after I've gone to the bathroom) I'm anywhere from 1-5 lbs. heavier than I thought and it's completely different every night depending on what I ate, so I say mornings are best for weighing in and getting consistency. |

If you used permanent dye it won't come out. You could try dying back to your natural color, but it's pretty difficult to figure out the exact shade of your natural color because your roots tend to be a little darker than the rest of your hair, and your roots are all you have to go by when deciding what your natural color is... Go to a salon. |

I love Skippy Natural. I've tried tons of other natural and organic versions of peanut butter and Skippy Natural is my favorite, it tastes the most like regular peanut butter, and is only 180 calories versus the 200-220 calories of regular peanut butter. I've also tried reduced fat peanut butter, it's disgusting, it doesn't have any of the fat so it's dry and makes your mouth basically stick together. Go with Skippy Natural since you like Skippy's regular peanut butter anyways! |

| Weight Loss | Eat BMR? Less? More? | Apr 07 2009 20:46 (UTC) |
1 |
If you eat your BMR you will lose weight. Your BMR is how many calories you burn laying in bed doing absolutely nothing but breathing with your eyes open. So if you eat your BMR, you should already have around a 300 calorie deficit, and then by working out, you'll have an even greater deficit. If you're burning around 2100/day, eating 1500 calories should be perfect for you. If you go lower or higher than that on occasion it really won't matter. Just don't make it a habit! |

| Weight Loss | What's your strategy? | Mar 24 2009 21:32 (UTC) |
2 |
Hi! My goal is to get down to 135 by the end of April/beginning of May (I'm 142 now) and eventually get to maybe 120, it all depends on how I feel. I'm pretty short (5'1 maybe 5'2, not completely positive) so I could even go down to 110 or 115 and still be right in the middle of my healthy weight range but I don't know what I'll look like that low! My strategy is very similar to yours! I eat treats when I want to but try not to go crazy with them. I always order dessert but try to eat half of it for example so I still get my sweet tooth fix but without TONS of extra sugar that I don't need! I used to exercise 6-7 days a week but I've been super lazy lately and have only been able to commit to 3-4 days a week! I eat 1200-1700 calories, usually closer to 1700 whether I work out that day or not. I don't eat many "white foods" or enriched products, mostly whole grain or whole wheat for me (except spaghetti because whole wheat spaghetti does not taste good!). I also buy all organic or natural foods in an attempt to keep all of those unhealthy preservatives, sodium, and hormones out of my body! Good luck with your goals! you've got like 9 more months to lose 20 lbs, you can TOTALLY do that! Great job so far =) |

| Motivation | Just pigged out the past two days...need help. | Mar 24 2009 17:05 (UTC) |
2 |
i know it's a few days late, but i know exactly how you feel! i do this a lot too. i've found that binging for 2, even 3 or 4 days in a row shouldn't affect your weight, but anymore than that will! so don't beat yourself up over those 2 days, the occasional day of consuming more calories than your calorie allowance can actually help boost your metabolism and keep your body from getting too used to a low calorie diet (and then your body would slow your metabolism a little since you're eating less...) and for the exercise part, maybe try to get a friend to go exercise with you to keep you more accountable for going, and make it more fun. once you get into the gym for 2-3 days in a row, it will become habit again and you'll be working out regularly again! hope you're back on track now that it's a few days later! and hopefully this advice will help you in the future =) |

Congratulations on liking yourself the way you are.... but like another poster said, being obese has very serious health risks... | Motivation | Already over my limit but still hungry! :( Help! | Mar 20 2009 22:09 (UTC) |
1 |
Sorry I forgot to write this, here's some filling snacks I like for next time this happens and you need to know what to do! - Mini bag of popcorn (usually like 100 calories and pretty filling!) -Big piece of fruit, like an apple, an orange, a grapefruit, a banana- usually will be 100 calories at most. -Piece of whoel grain toast with a tablespoon of peanut butter- higher in calories (closer to 150-200) but VERY filling because of the protein in peanut butter.
Snacks that combine protein AND carbs really keep you fuller longer, try to get in at least 5g of protein every time you eat something, it should help with the hunger! |

Have a healthy, filling snack. If you go over your calories ONE day, it won't make a difference! I do agree with the other posters that you're already at a healthy weight (and with a BMI of 20 you are even on the thin side) but at the same time I understanding wanting to lose weight at a younger age! (I'm 19...) So my point is, definitely try not to freak out if you go over your calories for one day, it will be fine and you won't gain any weight unless for some reason you consume 3,500 calories in excess of the 1500-2000 that your body needs... |

| Weight Loss | Simple weight loss | Mar 03 2009 00:14 (UTC) |

While it is "calories that matter" in terms of gaining and losing weight, you simply cannot feel full all day and satisfied on 2,000 calories of chips and soda, for example. In order to feel FULL and stop the binging and snacking, you need to eat whole grains, lots of fiber, and protein. Protein and fiberous foods take longer to digest, and therefore make you feel full longer. So it really is the type of food you eat that matters. If I could eat 1500 calories of skittles all day and feel satisfied and not hungry and not crave any other foods, then I would do it, but obviously I can't do that... and you probably can't either. So focus on having a more balanced diet, if you know you have a problem with eating too much snack foods or eating because you're bored, try to up the protein and healthy fats to make you feel full and hopefully stop that snacking! Sorry for the rant in the first paragrpah, it just gets on my nerves when people say it doesn't matter WHAT you eat, as long as your calories are in check! You can't keep your calories in check if what you're eating isn't healthy and balanced! Good luck! |

So you can log your weight -- which allows you to do the following:
- Plot your weight curve
- Analyze the trend of your weight (see under Recent in the figure above)
- Determine the projected target date (see under Overall in the figure above)
