I had a cat from the age of 3 until 21. I'm hoping Molly (the cat in my profile pic) lives that long although she does seem to have a habit of running face first into things so I'm not holding my breath!! She has just turned 3 so there's plenty of time for her to learn to apply the breaks tho! |

I keep a punnet of cherry tomatoes on my desk and just eat a few when i get peckish. The cals will be on the packaging but for the weight that I got the last time, it was less than 100 cals. Because of this, you can snack on them during the whole day.

hello and welcome! You sound like you've got a good start to losing weight with walking and bike riding. I've noticed that you start to feel healthier before you actually look healthier so don't get down if that happens to you! I'm lucky that I live on the north east coast in Northumberland so I have plenty of pretty scenery to look at! anyhoo, good luck! Donna. |

Hiya, I was a little overweight at your age and the way I got my mam to start making healthier meals (hard with a fast food loving bro, let me tell ya!) was to get really excited about a "new" recipe and then ask if she would make it or let me make it. My mam loved the fact that I was getting excited about food and possibly giving her the night off! Things like "hey, this looks like a good recipe..." really worked for me. It depends on your dad's personality tho. One question though, is putting butter on veg a common thing in the US? It's not something I've heard of - on new potatoes, yes but not other veg!! An alternative could be to use a drizzle of olive oil instead. Ok, so it's still a fat, but it's a healthier fat than butter. You can even make infused olive oil - you just add garlic, chillis or herbs to some olive oil to flavour it. |

Hiya, I need to lose 110lbs (I think, we'll see - I don't want to get too thin so might not be as much as that!). Like the idea of a challenge - I need something like that to keep me motivated!! I have a twin brother so have a well developed competitive streak! |

I'm the secretary in a research lab which studies ageing. A lot of the research points out that a healthy and varied diet leads to a long, healthy life..... Which is why there are chocolate biccies every Friday and cakes when it's someone's birthday... I hate avoiding the kitchen area at those times but I have to because I LOVE chocolate and will give in to temptation. So for my next birthday, I'm bringing in lots of seasonal fruits We also hold seminars and meetings here and sometimes there's food left over - the last one had chocolate dipped strawberries.... HEAVEN!! I had a couple... or maybe it was closer to 6.... Probably more like 8 though.... |

Not just peas but any seasonal summer veggies! It's a british classic.... You can make a dip using low fat soft cheese and finely chopped mint or the indian dip, riata (hope I spelled that correctly!) which is yogurt, mint and cucumber. |

Could the chokers be watercress? It looks like a weed and has quite tough stalks. It's quite peppery and come across as bitter if you aren't used to it. I hate dressed salads - I love baby leaves (spinach, rocket, etc) and pepping it up with fresh herbs from the garden - basil, chives, coriander, etc. My favourite salad is rocket, spinach, watercress, coriander, chive, sweet peppers, cherry tomatoes (both for sweetness), celery and a little smoked bavarian cheese (not great in the calorie department but it's yummy!) I love the flavours zinging off each other - the peppery leaves and sweet veg go really well together. If I do have a dressed salad, it can only be beef tomatoes, basil or rocket and feta cheese dressed in olive oil, lemon juice and course ground black pepper. What can I say, I like my peppery flavours!! |

Hmmm, guess soup is out of the question! Unless you like cold soups, that it. They're pretty easy to make at the weekend and will keep in the fridge (or freezer) if stored in an airtight container. The other thing I do is chop up veg (celery, carrots, peppers, etc) and put it in a tupperware box. I usually chop enough veg for a couple of days and get a mixed leaf bag of salad, some soft cream cheese and wholemeal pittas. One pitta filled with salad leaves, 30g of soft cheese and the veggies fills me up for most of the afternoon (a banana on standby for a snack is good!) You can make it the night before and it takes only a couple of minutes to make it up. The pitta bread is lower in calories than two slices of bread. |

I think it's pretty common these days. I get the bus home from work every day. In order to get home for 6.30pm, I have to run out the door at 5pm and hope that a bus comes to take me to the city centre. I then race to the bus station (I'll soon be classing it as excercise... lol) and usually get there for about 5.20. The bus is due to leave the station at 5.25 but it's usually late. There's always a queue and I join the back of the queue. But there is this one woman who persistantly goes to the front of the queue and stand right next to the doors so that she's first on the bus AND she has the bloody cheek to glare and rant at anyone who tries to stand up to her! She makes a big deal out of the fact that she gets the bus at 7.30am - I know she does cos it's the same bus I get only I get on it at 7am! I had to laugh on Friday though - this little old lady gave the woman a right telling off - it was so funny!! She was under 5ft, looked as frail as a bird and got right into the woman's face and said exactly what we had all wanted to say. I almost applauded but thought that would be cruel.... but I did notice everyone was smirking as the woman slunked to the back of the queue....

My cat responds to "sit", "paw" and "lie down" as well as knowing what "out" and "treat" means. I did try to teach her to play fetch and managed to get her to concentrate on her ball but she was concentrating too much on it... and ran into a door.... |

kelleigh - i agree with you. For any people from the UK reading this thread, the average dinner plate is 12" but if you want a smaller plate for portion control purposes, get yourself to Ikea as they sell 9" plates for about £1 each! I'd rather eat off the smaller plate than spend money on a printed plate. My family rib me enough about trying portion control as it is |

Oh hun, I'm so sorry. I know it hurts now and you'll feel lost and lonely for a little while to come, but you will still have friends who care for you and will not leave you. It will be hard, but you will get through this period and come out the other side a stronger person. I've been in a similar situation that, with hindsight, I realised hadn't been as great as I had thought it was at the time. I too wanted another chance but I honestly believe now that it would have been the worst thing to do. Think of him as a habit you want to break. When you want to talk to someone, it's only natural that you will want to talk to him but like any habit, you have to find another way of dealing with it. Do you have any female friends you can confide in? And like most habits that you want to break, it's going to be on your mind. This is a phase and it will pass, promise. Try and be strong. <hugs>

What about The Thing with Kurt Russell? I first saw it as a little girl (my nana fell asleep while babysitting!) and it scared the crap out of me. I saw it again recently and practically peed myself laughing at it! Or what about Ghostbusters? Or, and I love this film, the Goonies?!

Firstly, I love the Mika song and the video because those women ooze confidence and there's this really skinny guy saying "love yourself for who you are because that makes you beautiful". Believe me, if I had the confidence, I'd be wearing a corset in public too - as it is, I keep it for the bedroom and haven't had any complaints!! Mostly cos you need boobs to look good in a corset and my waist is a dress size smaller than my hips anyway, but I digress... I agree it's personal taste whether you find someone attractive or not but you have to give those women credit for, not only being in public, but being in the public eye when there is a huge number of people who don't find anyone who is overweight attractive. I'm sure Mika and his PR people knew that it would cause debate and in the process elicit free publicity..... It's all about what's inside and although some people may look at those bigger (bigger?? Laughable cos I wouldn't mind being that slim! lol) ladies and think "eurgh", who wouldn't want that confidence? Who wouldn't want to say "this is who I am, take me or leave me" whether you're fat, skinny, model-like or gollum-like.... In the Uk, we are not pro-fat but at the same time, we're told to be realistic about the images shown in the media. In fact, in some cases, I would say that the UK is still very much fat-ist - even in the medical sector as proven by my very own GP! We find the uber skinny celebs that are praised so much in the US laughable because they DO NOT look good and I would rather be a lady from Mika's video than a lindsey lohan or paris hilton type any day.... after all, it's just as unhealthy. And I think the reason Beth Ditto is applauded in the press is because despite the media shoving skinny minnies down our necks, she is a success. Look back at the music from the 80's and a lot of the singers were less than attractive but from the mid-90's onwards, you had to be exceptionally good to get a record deal if you weren't of a certain mould - slim, attractive and willing to have your voice manipulated via software (a la Britney Spears....) Juliebean, it's called opinions - and more free publicity for Mika! Hmm, I really need to learn to stop rambling! |

I was sent an email by someone I was dating when I questioned why he didn't seem interested in introducing me to his friends and family (we'd been together for months!). He forwarded a joke email and had highlighted one of the jokes - "fat girls are like mopeds - fun to ride till your mates find out". Needless to say, that relationship didn't last more than a second after that!! I've also had "You'd be pretty if you lost weight" from some random drunk guy and "You've got a pretty face but it's just downhill from the neck down" from a blind date. As my name is Donna, I've also had "donna kebab belly" when I was at school, but soon pointed out that I might have been bigger than them (I was a UK size 14 as a teen) but I was fitter than them. It was true - one skinny cow decided to try and beat me up for no reason other than the fact that I was overweight when I was 13 but, although she got the first punch in, I came out on top. I hit harder and I was faster. She tried running away but I caught her and said very calmly and very close to her face that if she tried anything again, I'd break her nose. I wouldn't have cos I'm not that sort of person but it spread around the school and no one bothered me after that. I'm a little ashamed and a little proud of standing up to her - I would never condone violence but it was self defence up until the point I chased her and grabbed her. Apart from the above, i've been lucky. A lot of the pressure I feel to be fitter actually comes from myself.

Hiya, I've had very mild IBS for a few years but I only ever "suffered" if I was particularly stressed. However, since I had a period of ill health for 6 months, it has gotten much worse depsite the fact that I'm now (apart from the IBS) 100% better. My GP tells me to be patient and see if it settles but apart from throwing some very general leaflets at me, hasn't been much help (I'm changing GP soon so fingers crossed I get some better advice!). I can't eat some of my favourite foods without suffering from bloating, cramps, etc. For example, as I type this, I've discovered that I need to add strawberries to the list I love lentil soup but can't eat that unless I'm willing to put up with the pain. Spicy foods are out. Chocolate is out (maybe not a bad thing if I'm on here!). Coffee is out (and I LOVE coffee). Brown rice is out. I think you get the idea! Anyway, please feel free to add me as a buddy and maybe we can swap some recipes. Hopefully, I'll learn a thing or two about my condition other than, to quote the leaflet, "the triggers vary from person to person" (yeah, but what are the triggers??!!) Donna |

I honestly feel like I've been banging my head against a brick wall. For the first couple of years, I was told to give it time and it would heal - the original injury involved the whole of my left leg and I had damage to the tendons in my knee and to my hip which got better within a month or two. You've got a good idea with the swimming/running in water... Only problem is I get very panicky in water!! I'll see what classes are available though because the doc is no help so I've got to do something! |

Hey! Love your post! I constantly seem to be fighting the inner demon that tells me the media is right. I know I'm not as healthy as I could be and that's what I'm working on - I have a fitness related goal not a weight related goal. I love my face and I'm worried that losing weight will change it but fingers crossed, it'll change it for the better! I don't want to be skinny minnie cos I love the fact that I have curves men can grab but if they wobbled a little less, I might be a little less self concious when I'm with that special someone... Oh, and there's something I've noticed recently which I found quite funny.... those guys that only seem to go for the skinny ladies are always to first to check out my cleavage!! Sometimes, you've got to wonder who the media is really affecting! |

I think you're already on your way if you've started chatting already! To be honest, I'd wouldn't "try" to do anything - if it comes naturally, mention something a little more personal to do with your life outside the gym and see what happens.... If he's keen, he'll take the ball and run with it! Have fun! |

Hiya, Are you sure it isn't muscle? Have you gained any inches? If you haven't gained any inches then I would think it was just fat being turned into muscle. I know how you feel though - I've had plenty of moments where I think I've been doing great only to have the scale tell me the opposite! Please keep going though! Donna |

Hi
I currently weigh 225lbs (but apparently I don't look as though i weight that, whatever that means!) My goal is to get within the health range for my height - 5ft 2" - and the weight smack bang in the middle was 115lbs so looks like I have 110 lbs to lose! I'd love to have some support and to support people in turn - my family are very dismissive of my desire to get fit so it can be quite hard to stick to this. I'm determined this time though and have given myself till 2010 to get fit enough to run the Great North Run.
