Hi everyone! I'm finally back from my road trip and I feel like I was gone FOREVER! I've tried to catch up on your posts though. It's nice to see everyone still posting and even some new people. Welcome!
Well, I basically did no calorie counting at all while I was gone, ate a lot of delicious sandwiches on baguettes, and walked uphill a little bit. It was definitely a break week. But now I'm back on track. I have a lot of school work to do over the next week or so and I won't have much time for exercise, but I'm gonna do the best I can. We need to go shopping because there's NOTHING in the fridge and it's so tempting to get takeout!

Do you have time to exercise today so that you can "buy" yourself a couple hundred more calories for dinner? That's what I do when I eat too much during the day. Jump rope, go for a quick jog or a long walk, situps, pushups, anything... |

Weigh in day!
Start Weight: 148 Last Week: 143.5 This Week: 139.4!!!
I am so happy about this! To tell you the truth, I saw 139.5 a couple days ago, but I was afraid to log it or tell anyone because I thought it too good to be true. But here it is again. And I must have checked about 5 times in a row. 139.4! 139.4! 139.4! 139.4! 139.4! Wooooooo!
Ok. I'm done.
Now, iced, it's good to know there's someone else who understands this big dinner thing. Sure enough, you were right. Yesterday I spread my calories out a little better: 200 for breakfast, 300 for lunch and I budgeted 700-800 for dinner. I made scallops in butter with chantrelle mushrooms, crushed walnuts, and fresh sage over pasta. I only ate half. I was totally stuffed and couldn't eat any more. I did have a couple glasses of wine with my husband though. :( But I don't regret it too much, even though I went over my calories and ended up with a deficit of only like 300.
About being tired all the time. Last summer when I was losing, I remember feeling really weak all the time. Like the feeling in your muscles after you get out of a long hot bath. I never figured it out and I'm not feeling like that this time around, but it was sooo annoying. Are you sleeping well at night? Is it only certain times of the day when you feel tired or is it all day?
Sucks about your ankle, Jmom. I think the jumping jacks are what hurt my knees last week. I wouldn't return to Jillian 'til your feeling totally better. You don't want a permanent injury that keeps you from your really great exercise plans! That would be terrible. Btw, I hope work is going well today. Looking forward to hearing all about it!
Terrdog: Ok, so you messed up. But the fact that you instinctively came here to vent about it means that you're better off than you were before you started on CC. That's really a step in the right direction, I think. The next step is to think about all of your friends in this forum before ordering the burger next time. Imagine me or Jmom or susie or iced sitting next to you in the car, in your passenger seat, saying "Wait! Stop! Let's go home and make a delicious healthy dinner instead! Remember how much you hated the way your face felt all greasy last time? Remember? You want a big juicy burger? Let's go home and have a buig juicy chicken breast instead with a side of roasted potatoes and some green beans!" :) Seriously, though. It really helps me to think of you guys when I'm about to make a mistake.
Finally, congrats, leanne, on the loss! 128.6! Wow! I can't wait to see that number! |

I know you both are right, jmom and susie. It's a bad habit that I need to break. I think one of the reasons I'm not hungry when I wake up is because of the big meal the night before. It's just that big delicious 1000 calorie meals are so delightful! Gah! Its not like I'm eating burgers and fries for dinner either. I can down 1000 calories worth of spinach and salmon very easily if I want. Usually my evening meals are really healthy, there's just a lot of food. Today I will try to spread the calories out more evenly: I had coffee, yogurt, and a pear for breakfast (200), will have sauteed asparagus and quinoa with tomatoes for lunch (about 300?) and not sure what for an 700 calorie dinner.
Hoping to get in a 30DS for my exercise today. Can't run since it's raining all day.
Jmom: I don't think you're being irrational at all. I know how difficult it is to balance school, work, and weightloss. That's how I gained like 18 lbs back from last summer! In the summer I have nothing to do except exercise and write my dissertation. But when Fall hits I will be in exactly the situation you're in. Your plan for getting it all in sounds great. But remember to not overdo it. I personally need to schedule in some "off" days or else I'll start taking "off" weeks, if you know what I mean. It looks like Saturday will be your off day. No exercising (well, maybe a nice walk) and why not treat yourself to 1600 instead of 1200 once a week also? At any rate, the best thing you can do is check in with us every day, like you have been. When you're not able to keep up with the schedule you've set for yourself, send us a little note. When you eat something you regret, post in here. I can tell you with absolute certainty that the minute I stopped checking in with this thread was the minute I was off the wagon for good (well, for like 9 months). Also, I lost touch with a lot of people who I had really started to care about. At least susicue came back to me! :) |

Just did my 7th day (not consecutive) of 3DS Level 1. Iced, congrats on Level 2! You reminded me... I was wondering how heavy your weights are for all you 30 Day Shreders. I've been doing Level 1 with 8lb weights because these are the lightest I have. I can barely make it through some of the exercizes, especially those weird ones where you like kick your hip out to the side while rasing the bars in front of you to eye level. Maybe I should get my hands on some 3 or 5 lb weights. It sounds like I won't be able to handle 8lbs at Level 2 at all!
Anyway, good for you, Jmom, for opting for the healthier snack! When I have salt cravings I make kale chips. You wash, rinse, dry and roughly chop one bunch of kale. Mix it in a bowl with about a tsp of olive oil, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Then spread the leaves on a baking sheet and bake for about 30-45 minutes at 350-375. You have to watch them or they will burn. This may not be for everyone, but I've practically convinced myself they're the same as chips: salty, crunchy, and really really good for you. Mmmm.
What's everyone having for dinner tonight? My guy is making huevos rancheros, one of my favorite meals: 2 tortillas covered with non-fat refried beans, salsa, and lettuce and then topped with two poached eggs (he makes his fried) with a side of avocado slices and sour cream. Delicious!
I haven't had anything to eat today except a pear... I know that's bad. I wish I could get used to eating smaller meals throughout the day, but I just love eating substantial dinners and the idea of eating like six 200 calorie meals sounds terrible to me. Does anyone know how damaging it will be to my weightloss if I eat like 200 calories during the day and then 1000 at night? I hope it's not terrible. Lately I've been doing this like 4 - 5 days a week. :( |

Hi! Who wants to join me in a NEW!!! June challenge of losing 10 pounds :) |

I'm in too! I started out about 3 weeks ago at 148 and am down to about 141 now. I think most of that was water so I'm prepared for the weight loss to start slowing down soon. I'd love to lose about 8 lbs in the month of June before going to Florida for my brother's wedding on the 27th. My ultimate goal is 115-120, so by the end of June I'd like to be at like 132. But I'll take anything under 135!
I've been exercising on and off for a while and trying to get a deficit of about 700 a day. Mostly I run and do the Jillial Michaels 30 Day Shred dvd.
Really excited about this challenge. Let's do it! |

Hi all! Looks like everyone is doing pretty well. I, on the other hand, haven't exercised since Sunday! :( I've been staying away from drinking and smoking though and have kept my calories pretty low. Thinking I might return to the Thirty Day Shred today even though I totally don't feel like doing anything! Ugh. Lazy lazy lazy. But I will be going out of town for 5 days starting on Sunday and I doubt I'll get much exercising in while I'm gone, so I'd better work now... Bleh. I'm just having one of those days, you know? |

Good for you, terr! I know what you mean about not having money. Over the summer my partner and I don't get paid (since school is out) and we basically have to live on savings. This pretty much eliminates my biggest weakness: restaurants. :)
Mmm, I love chai tea. Can you post your recipe?
Going to another BBQ today. I'm thinking I will have one chicken breast and some salad. No beer or wine for me! I messed up yesterday and had 3 glasses of wine, but never even got tipsy. Even though the wine was delicious, this, to me is still a waste of like 300 calories since I never even felt it. :) So, no drinking for me today.
I'm having some pretty good results with the scale lately. This morning it said 141, which was a surprise. I know I'm not supposed to weigh every day, Jmom. :( I can't help it. I'm obsessed! But lately I've been justifying the daily weighing by telling myself that if I weigh only once a week, there's no way of knowing if it's water or undigested food or whatever, you know? So weighing every day, though it fluctuates hugely, ends up resulting in a better picture of my average. Does that make sense?
Anyway, I hope everyone is having a good weekend! |

Quick question. So I haven't eaten anything yet today except some coffee with soymilk, about 35 calories even though I ran and burned 600 cals (I know, bad). Basically I haven't had anything since last night (a bowl of yogurt and some strawberries at 10 pm). My question is this: I just got out of the shower and weighed myself without clothes and the scale said 140.5 lbs. Is this accurate or should I ignore it? |

Hi all! Hope everyone's enjoying the long weekend.
Got up early this morning to watch my friend finish his first 1/2 marathon. I was really overwhelmed by the vibe at the finish line. I think I'm gonna do it next year!
Came home and jogged for about an hour... 600 calories!
Saving up for a burger tonight at the BBQ celebrating the friend's run. I still think I'll abstain from beer though. |

Thanks, Jmom. I needed that!
Just checking in real quick before dinner so I can stay on track for the rest of the evening. It looks like I'll have a nice deficit of like 750 today. Had yogurt and coffee for breakfast, portabello sandwich and kale chips for lunch, and the dude is making grilled salmon, asparagus, and spinach pasta for dinner. Might have a pear for dessert. Too bad this still won't make up for what I ate yesterday, but I'm back on track again and that's all that matters.
How is everyone else today? Dinner plans? Weekend plans? |

J-mom: Yeah, I guess I was hoping for some wiggle room while I'm on vacation. But more than that I was just really hoping to be down to 140 by the time this trip rolled around and a screwed up and didn't make it. I hate realizing where I could be by now if I had just stuck with the diet and exercising. It's so depressing. Anyway, I know 2 lbs won't be a big difference, but last summer when we went to this same conference/road trip I think I was at like 138. I just get so nervous when I haven't seen people for a while and have gained weight in the meantime. I feel like everyone is gonna be like "Wow. Wasn't she a lot smaller last year?" I dunno. I need to stop thinking this way...
Re: Gradschool and weight loss... I wish I had advice, but all I can do is empathize. Last summer I was down to like 132 and then school started up again in the Fall and, well, you know what happened. I just felt so exhausted after a day of teaching/reading/writing (not nearly as demanding as your days, it seems) that I would come home not wanting to cook or do anything besides smoke and watch television. It's really hard to keep up a summer weight loss regimen while in school. It doesn't help that there are like ZERO fresh organic veggies here for most of the winter and that pizza tastes so good. Anyway, this year I am starting a new job. Instead of teaching undergrads I will be the Graduate Assistant at my University's Gender Institute. This will be a TON of work on top of the dissertation writing (which needs to start happening soon), but hopefully I won't mess up again this year and will be able to keep up my exercising and eating right when the long cold winter hits. Let's do it together! |

Hi all! Just got back from a morning run and burned 450 calories! Had a really bad day yesterday. The usual. But I'm hoping I'm back on the wagon for good now.
Question: Is it healthy/possible for me to go from 143 to 141 by the first week in June? I'm thinking of upping my workouts in preparation for a trip to Quebec with some friends. Two lbs in 8 days? This would mean a deficit of 875 per day. I hear that as long as I don't let my deficit go higher than 1000, I'm ok. What do you all think?

Ok weigh in day!
SW: 148 GW: 115 CW: 143.5
I'll take it!
Went to the "beach" yesterday (if the shores of Lake Eerie count as a beach, which apparently they do to my friends who grew up around here. I'm from Florida though, so I guess I'm a beach snob!). Not yet ready to be in a bathing suit, but I still managed to get a ton of sun which I think makes me look smaller.
My weigh in on the Great Cookbook Debate of 2009: I love cookbooks (for all the reasons cited, especially the beautiful pics), but I mostly use the internet which means bringing my laptop into the kitchen and praying I don't destroy the keyboard with whatever I am cooking. Easier said than done.
In other news... I'm pretty sure I make you all uncomfortable when I lament my pot smoking troubles since no one ever responds. Times are a changin' but apparently not for everyone. I for one think it should be legal for a bunch of different philosophical, social, medical, and political reasons, but I know that there are still a lot of people who think that illegality indicates inherent immorality. Anyway, so I think I'm just gonna work through it on my own from now on. Sorry to have bothered anyone. |

I had a terrible day yesterday. I don't even want to tell you all what I did, but suffice it to say it invoved smoking and lots of eating. I failed, in other words, at my plans to not smoke until the beginning of June. But I did also go hiking along this really great creek in the area with my friends. I'm sure I burned like 400 calories doing that, but unfortunately that wasn't enough to undo what I had for dinner. Bleh. Ended up with a pretty big calorie surplus which essentially undid a lot of the work I've done so far.
Now, I'm pretty disappointed with myself, but instead of letting that disappointment throw me permanently off track, I'm getting back on the wagon immediately today. I've learned a lesson: I've now confirmed, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that I cannot diet and smoke. It simply will not work. So, I'm realizing that I need a genuine lifestyle change. I can't be someone who has the stuff around at all. Luckily I only smoked yesterday because my friend came over with some. I'm pretty sure I've decided not to buy it anymore... I just can't bring myself to delete the guy's number from my cell phone! I would love to get to a place where I could smoke only like once a month. Sigh.
So it's back on the wagon today. Thinking of doing a Jillian workout and some jogging or biking. Question for those of you doing the 30 Day Shred: Anyone experiencing any pain in their knees from the jumping jacks Jillian makes us do? Yesterday, when hiking, the minor pain from the jumping jacks became excruciating. I'm wondering if jumping jacks are the best thing for me...
J-mom: Hang in there with the not weighing til friday. It's gonna be hard for me too, but if I weigh myself today it will not be pretty. Maybe we should put our scales somewhere out of sight?
Sorry for the long post. Hope everyone is well! |

Welcome terrdog! The 30 Day Shred is a workout dvd by Jillian Michaels, one of the trainers from the Biggest Loser. It's pretty good. I burn about 250 calories doing the Level 1 workout. Bought mine on Amazon for like $10. Totally worth it. It would probably be really great for someone as busy as you are. All you need are some hand weights, a mat, and enough room in front of your tv to do jumping jacks in. |

I did kind of a dumb thing for dinner tonight. I ate a burger... with a fried egg on it. A fried egg on a burger!
Had I eaten a normal dinner I would have had like a 750 calorie deficit today. But I didn't and I think my deficit was probably around 200. Thing is, I fell pretty great about this. The burger was delicious. :) |

iced: The worst is going out with friends and not drinking, like I did again last night. It's funny though, when you're not drinking you can really notice the subtle differences in friends' personalities as the night wears on and the pints get emptied. Hahaha.
all: I was feeling really unmotivated all day today. This weird thing happens to me when I reduce my calories. My muscles start to feel really weak and weird, like after you get out of a long hot bath or a sauna. Does anyone else have this problem? I don't feel particularly hungry, just really weird. I go back and forth between worrying and telling myself this is just what it feels like to burn more calories than you consume. Anyway, I felt like poop today and I didn't want to exercise AT ALL. But I did the Jillian dvd (250 calories) and am just now getting back from an hour long walk with my partner (215 calories)!!! I'm really proud of myself and hope I can keep this up for the long haul. Does anyone else get really discouraged when the calculate how long it will take to get the weight off at the rate you're going? My math tells me I won't be down to 120 until like October! That seems SO FAR AWAY! :( |

I'm jogging, walking, biking and doing weight training with Jillian Michaels' Thirty Day Shred. But, I don't do all of these things every day. Also, if I'm honest with myself, I'm really only exercising like 4-5 days a week. So I guess what I'm really asking is if it would be ok to have around a 750 calorie deficit 5 days a week and only about a 400 calorie deficit 2 days a week. |

Welcome kde! Sounds like you'll really benefit from participating in a group like this. One thing though: I doubt that any of us are going to give you our blessing for losing 8-10 lbs per week. I can only speak for myself, but I think that 1-2 lbs per week (as recommended by CC) is the only way to go. I know it's tempting to try to lose more, but I am certain it's not healthy and will definitely not sustain itself. Besides, losing weight that fast is a great way to guarantee that the minute you slow down your exercise and start eating more you'll gain it all back in a jiffy. Really. In my opinion the only way to get it off and keep it off is slow and steady. Remember, this is a lifestyle change, not a diet. It may very well take you over a year to lose 80 lbs, but this is the healthiest way. And CC will be here for you the whole time. Good luck! |

jmom: I have never regulated my incessant weighing. I must step on the scale 3 times a day at least. It would probably be a good idea to do it only once a week, I think. So I'll join you on your challenge of not weighing til Friday.
lovin: Congrats on all your activity this weekend! Hang in there, you'll see results eventually. I wish I had exercised more on Saturday and Sunday. I didn't do much of anything besides a couple 45 min walks, but I did keep my calories down, so I think I had a pretty good weekend.
leanne: Tell me more about these squash sticks of yours...
all: So I weighed myself this morning and got 142. I started off a little over 2 weeks ago at 148. I'm wondering what you make of this? Is it possible for me to have lost 3 lbs a week with a 500 calorie daily deficit on average? I haven't been starving myself either. I wonder if it's just water or something. |

iced: No worries. Just get yourself back on track as soon as you can. I think it's probably good to go over every once in a while, to keep yourself from going crazy. As far as the drinking goes, I'm exactly the same way. In fact, when I'm even the slightest bit inebriated on anything my defenses crumble and I want to eat 1000 pizzas. So that's why I'm taking a break from that stuff until June. Then, maybe I'll start letting myself drink/smoke once a week. If I actually make it through the end of the month this will be the longest I've gone without drinking, I'm ashamed to say. :( But I think it will be a nice reward to go out to dinner and share a nice bottle of wine with friends in a couple of weeks.
