Also make sure that you are not taking any new medication that may cause you to be sensitive to sunlight.  There should be a warning on the Rx bottle or call your pharmacist if you are unsure.

And you're how old? Pure semantics. You will find whatever source that you can to justify what you are doing to yourself.  Do what you will, but those 2 things on the side of your head called ears have a purpose other than for earrings.

15 times a day.  As well as your profile stating that your BMI goal is 18.5 which is UNHEALTHY-you are not treating your body well although you may think so at the moment.  Enjoy your life and stop putting so much pressure on becoming emaciated.

So, I've been scaleless for about a week now, and it's driving me crazy. I'm used to weighing myself about 15 times a day (and yes, I know all about fluctuations, so they don't bother me) that just feels so empty now. I've tried measuring myself at these times, but it's just not the same.

Obsess much?  Karma's a bitch.  Why don't you ease up and enjoy your vacation-live a little.  No wonder your scale gave up on you, your body is sure to follow.

I admit my weight and my emotions are a little too closely connected, but this is just down to me being a perfectionist. This same "flaw" that makes me crazy sometimes is also what has gotten me flawless grades all my life and probably what got me into med school, so even if it can mess up my self image I have to love my perfectionist tendencies for all the other things they've done for me.

I don't deprive myself by any means, sometimes I feel like doing but I've grown smart enough through experience and foolish mistakes to know it won't do me any good or make me any happier, I eat healthily now and still enjoy my treats, I love food and it's not just fuel to me, it's one of life's pleasures that I enjoy in careful moderation.

Are you planning to recite this pro ana mantra to your future patients as well?  .......".....so even if it can mess up my self image I have to love my perfectionist tendencies for all the other things they've done for me."

I certainly hope that you change your attitude before you begin to treat actual humans.  Getting into university is one thing, practicing is quite another.

Your caloric intake is not a large range at all considering how active you seem to be (although I'm not aware of your height-but a 33-36 waist is very fit).

The cause of your increased weight gain may simply be a lack of calories for the amount of calories you are expending during the day.

Take some time to look over the site while you wait for your tests to return.  Should your thyroid come back normal, you can do an in depth analysis of your overall diet.

All the best and good luck.

First you need to give us the basics.  How many cals per day are you consuming?  How many are you burning (have you used the CC tools to calculate BMR etc.?)?

Have you recently begun taking any new medication?  Even if it wasn't prescribed by a physician, perhaps by a friend for a backache from building the house or other rigorous activity?  Anything that is out of the ordinary that you are doing now that you didn't before.

How long has this been going on?  Days, a week, a month or more?

Did you actually see your doctor or just have your thyroid drawn?  If so, what did she say regarding the unexplained weight gain?

If you are only 14, a bmi of 18.2 sounds within reason. I'm sure you can stay healthy if you are willing to eat a well-rounded diet in proper amounts to MAINTAIN a weight of 95. I would fear that your physician wanting you to be a higher healthy weight than what you are comfortable with, it would put you at higher risk for relapse. Perhaps you can discuss with your doctor the chance of him giving you a "trial period" of eating healthily and maintaining the weight YOU feel comfortable with while continuing with your therapy.

Telling a 14 year old girl with a severe eating disorder to go to her physician negotiate a 'trial period'?  Nice work.  Send me your resume, I might have an opening in Uganda with your clinical expertise.

Relax!  Very rarely in the first test studies (selected states in the US-mid '90's) did it actually cause, excuse me, anal leakage.  If it happened to one person a warning had to be slapped on the label because it is a food additive.  Think equal-aspartame.

Enjoy, the products are actually quite yummy

well, for my 2 cents- I think you get angry a lot and don't really know how to filter your aggression.  A day lived in anger is a day that is wasted to you.

I see a lot of your posts about struggling to get over your ED and different things.  Sometimes a vent is in need, and I'm not one to judge how/when you should vent, but it seems that throwing it onto the internet and upsetting quite a few people isn't the best idea.

Start a journal.  Write down things about your health, about your friends...worries...hates, etc.  You are your best judge of character, and I think looking back on your journal entries, you will learn from yourself.

People will have their ideas about you and you cannot do anything about 'em.  Trying to have everyone agree with you and like you is an impossible task and immature to strive for.  Just be you and be confident in who you are.

Swimchick, if you got nothing else out of this thread, print out the above message from ginger.  Read it over and over until you get it-she is very wise and very kind to give you such sage advice.

Weight Loss Gastric Bypass VS LapBand Surgery Jun 26 2008

The problem with the 'comparison article' you have is that it comes from a company that only specializes in the Lap Band surgery. How can it be objective?

Should a person be interested in surgery as a weight loss option, first discuss it with your primary care physician who then can refer you to reputable surgeon(s)/practices who are familiar with, and preform, the many WLS procedures now currently available.

How is your restriction?  Maybe it's time for a fill?

It sounds as if you are actually too tight.  A lot of the patients who have the surgery tend to think that the tighter the band the greater the weight loss; not the case.  If your band is too tight you are only able to swallow high fat liquids such as ice cream, gravies, soft foods and potato chips!!(liquid fat)-all the things that are not nutritionally sound.

Have your surgeon loosen the band and then request a fluoroscopy (x-ray of your esophagus and lap band to make sure that the band is not obstructed and flows nicely).  You should be able to start to enjoy solids in small quantities.  Lean meats, veggies, some complex carbohydrates.  Approximately 1/3 of what you were eating prior to your surgery.  Still be very mindful of your caloric intake!

Remember, the band is a tool, it is there to assist you, make sure it is calibrated properly-only your doctor can help you with that.  Your surgeon's office should have some type of after care or support group, don't be afraid to ask or even start one if there isn't.

And as always, here is a great place too.

As for your protein, rule of thumb is a gram of protein for every pound of weight.  I weigh 130 so I strive to get @ 130g per day.  I also make sure that my fiber and water is right up there as well.  Some will tell you a little less on the protein but not usually the case when you are lifting.  Helps the muscles recoup faster and burn more fat.

So I weigh 224lbs are you saying I should eat 224 grams of protein?  That's a heck of a lot. I would have to have about 70g of protein for every meal.  That can't be right can it?

A post from one of the moderators' forum:

There's been an awful lot of posts here, recently, regarding extreme diets. People who truly believe that eating less than 1200/1500 calories is the best or only way to lose weight. People who believe fasting is both useful and helpful.

And I'm here to say, to anyone who will listen to me, it just ain't so.

Most of you know who I am. I'm writing this post with the full knowledge that many of you know who I am. I'm HK, the author of the Calorie-Count.com Diet. I'm not a doctor, but I've been doing this weight loss thing for a year and I know a few things about how to lose weight in a healthful manner, one that my doctors all agree with.

And extreme dieting is not healthful.

I'm not here to try to convince those of you who are sure I'm wrong. You aren't going to listen to me anyways. I'm here to try to convince those of you aren't sure, yet.

For those of you who aren't sure, who want to lose weight, but aren't sure how to do it, listen:

Alot of people want, or need, to lose weight fast. The bookshelves and airwaves are full of promises of fast weight loss, 20 lbs. in 6 weeks, or what not. These are all fad diets. They promise you fast weight loss with strange diets that sound too good to be true. Low carb, high carb, low fat, no fat, high fat, no sat fat. Blue foods, red foods, green foods, no foods. These are ALL fad diets and the world is FULL of them. And they don't WORK. Some of them don't work at all, some work short term, but you can't stay on it so you fail and gain more.

Yo-Yo Dieting WILL mess up your metabolism, as you lose muscle mass. How much it messes up your metabolism depends on how active you are. If you continue to try to lift weights, than it won't mess you up too badly. If you never touch weights, your metabolism will continue to lower for each yo.

But there *IS* a way to lose weight, healthfully, with none of these issues. All it requires is patience and commitment. That's the Calorie-Count way, the way discussed in the Calorie-Count.com Diet so many of you are familiar with.

The methods we discuss in the Calorie-Count.com Diet work, my friends. I'm proof of that. 70 lbs. lost. I'm not the only person, though. Ask around the boards. People have lost 100 lbs. or more just counting calories, getting active and eating better.

For MOST of us, the way to make a Diet work is to bring it INTO our lifestyle, make it part of our routine. To make friends with your new lifestyle, you need to be prepared for everything.

Extreme Dieting requires an extreme personality. You've got to be willing to count EVERY scrap of food that enters your mouth (whether you spit it out or swallow it), and never ever ever go beyond it. Extreme Dieters can not enjoy a break, a splurge, for any reason. Whether it be for a birthday, a holiday, or the Superbowl, their diets BECOME their lives.

But if you pick a more sensible, slow diet than it's OK If you fall off the bandwagon because it does no lasting damage. Just enjoyed a triple-chocolate moccachino with extra whipped cream with friends? Well, that sucks. But you've done no lasting damage. You can get up, dust off, and do better tommorow.

Extreme Dieting hurts the body. It forces your metabolism to slow down, and your body temperature to fall. You CAN live this way, you may even live longer.. but it comes at the expense of being ever to be truly energetic and active again. Extreme Dieters live life in the slow lane. You'll never find an extreme dieter who can use their body to it's FULL potential, do something like run a marathon or be an Iron Man like our very own neeners. That's how great the toll extreme dieting takes on you. They also will never have a distinct pair of six-packs/four-packs, because extreme dieting destroys the muscles.

Please consult your doctor before starting anything that sounds too extreme. Please know that there are better, if slower, ways to lose weight. Ways that will not harm your body, that, if you go the same route I am, exercising and becoming fit, will actually help your body to get to it's full potential.

This is what Calorie-Count.com is about. Slow, healthful weight management. This is what we support and this is what we're here for.

Thank you for your time.

what?

Hi Whitney.  Your body needs at least 1200 calories per day to properly function, period.

Eating, or not eating, as you are doing at this point is extremely unhealthy as I am sure you do realize at 22 years of age-you sound very intelligent.  There are no quick fixes.

I see that you have been on this site for some time now and I see no reason to reiterate what you have more than likely read before-you will get your share from the moderators.
