The Lounge Apartment Lease Advice Mar 10 2009

It totally and completely depends where you live. Look up your local renter's laws, it will be in there.

Some cities give renters lots of rights, some don't. If you lived where I do, you would have the option (if your landlord agreed) to find someone to take over the remainder of your lease. However, the landlord could legally say no, and is at no obligation to help if you could not find someone.

Also, check on your renter's rights. I know here that the landlord is REQUIRED to give you a printed copy of the landlord-tenant act when you initially sign the lease. (yes, all the legal jargon and city code) If there is something like that in your city, it would definitely have to state all this about the addendum.

I would suggest consulting a lawyer to talk and see...might cost you a little, but could save a lot.

I'd say...give him a date! I quit smoking when I met my boyfriend, and it is one of the best things I have ever done. I wanted to quit, but it really is hard without some motvation. Maybe he wants to quit and needs the right person to support him! One date won't hurt, but it is really up to her!

Weight Loss Coffee for Breakfast...ok/not ok? Dec 09 2008

This may not be exactly what you want to hear...

But, according to your profile, you just celebrated a big birthday. I am ENVIOUS that you have made it through your teenage years, school, your twenties, being a mom, losing 95 lbs and somehow find yourself NOT addicted to caffeine like most of us! I would say don't start now if you don't have to! Caffeine is indeed a drug, and though it boosts your metabolism (its a stimulant...making your heart work faster than normal/natural), adding 15 min to your workout will do the same thing! I started drinking coffee when I was around 12 and now I am a complete zombie (not to mention a huge witch) without coffee and worse yet, suffer massive migraines if I don't have it.

Of course, I'm not quitting:) Just a thought though... Congrats on your weight loss and happy birthday:)

Hmmm...what's your protein/carb/fat ratio on a typical day? Rather than cutting the calories, maybe you need to up the protein a bit and focus on gaining muscle. 30% fat is a bit high for someone so small. Try to stay off the scale for a few weeks, hit the weights, and focus on your weekly body fat % measurements for a bit. You might gain a few pounds, but if you get your body fat down you will be trimmer.

The Lounge Why sneak in vegetables for the kids? Dec 02 2008

I don't know if this is much help, BUT...

I was one of those kids who would not, could not and did not eat veggies growing up. Not a one...the only thing I would eat was potatoes, I would literally pick the celery out of chicken and star soup and the tomatoes out of pasta sauce. And I would gag if I had to eat them. My mom laughs about it now, because I did learn to love my veggies, and I eat lots now. Her pediatrician told her not to worry about it, and just double my vitamins up, since that is really what a growing body needs from veggies anyway. (TWO Flintstones dino vitamins, what more could a kid want!?) In any case, I am now 25 and I turned out okay, and totally healthy to boot. I am an exceptionally healthy eater now, and I still take vitamins everyday.

If I ever have kids, I will probably obess and try to make them eat vegetables, but I don't really think it is the end of the world if they don't!

Foods PB2 VS. Better'n Peanutbutter Dec 02 2008

I like both, a lot. I second the PB2 in the oatmeal, I eat that every morning and it keeps me full until lunch. It is especially good in apple cinnamon oatmeal. I disagree that PB2 is bland, I think it is really good, and you can have 4 spoons on a sandwich for the same calories as 1 spoonful of natural peanut butter. Also, you can buy the exact same thing for cheaper, it is really just peanut flour, which you can find in bulk at some places! I bought one jar of the real stuff and realized...hey, my mom used to bake with this stuff!

I like better n' PB from Trader Joe's as well, and use that on sandwiches or crackers, or to dip apples in. My only complaint about the better n PB is that it is a bit sweet, especially if you prefer natural peanut butter.

As not liking the taste, you just have to try them for yourself! I am a lifelong peanut butter lover, and I LOVE both of these!

I'm sure I don't have to say this, but get the non-toxic or medical kind.

Sorry to sound unsympathetic, but for the past 8 years I have watched a fool make foolish decisions and call them God's will. He has proven to be no more than one of the most terrifying tyrants of my lifetime. I am a person of faith, but I would be happy if we had an atheist in office. One person's interpretation of one God's will is not God's will at all.

Other presidents have attended church, so, obviously it can be done if one desires to attend.  I guess I question his desire. Did he attend church prior to the election simply for "show". I don't know and I won't speculate.  I am not judging, just throwing out the topic for discussion.  But I must note that the response is mostly from cc'ers who do not care for religion.

I am somewhat offended by your assertion that by responding "I don't care" means that someone "does not care for religion" or is not a "religious" person. I think that most people are just saying that religion is not a requirement to run this country. In fact, that's why this country exists. Check your history and move back to 18th century Europe if that's how you feel. Sorry, not trying to sound snarchy, just trying to give an example. And maybe attended for show. Just like basically every action of all the political candidates for the last 2 years.

I consider myself a person of faith, and this month I am thanking God that we will finally have a leader who will consult experts in their respective fields, as opposed to "praying for inspiration on a daily basis."

This is history for many of us, and he ran a good election.

This was history for ALL of us. America shed a dark vestage of its past yesterday and once again stood up as a country of hope. Regardless of what he means to the world, that Barack Obama's black family is now America's first family is a visual refute against the negative rhetoric of African-American racism. Every generation from this day forward is changed, and every voter that cast their lot in with John McCain to prevent this from happening is being dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century.

Also, Obama was very strongly linked to Palestinian leaders and the PLO. This is fact, not something I heard on the news. Whether his ties were or were not "savory" is not even important. He refused to aknowledge them or explain the situation beyond dismissing it. I could care less about Rev. Wright. I would never hold him accountable for another man's rantings.

First, did you watch the 3rd presidential debate? Obama made his ties to Ayers quite clear. Irrelevant as that ordeal was...

Second, so what if he has links to Palestine? What has Palestine ever done to us? Maybe if we would stop funding their oppressors and start to take note of Israel's (and thus, our) human rights record, which the US media so blatantly ignores, Palestinians would like us a little more:) In fact, I hope Obama does have ties to Palestine! It would be a breath of fresh air to see the US actually engage in foreign policy discussion instead of just putting guns in other peoples hands.

The Lounge Question for McCain supporters... Nov 04 2008

Yes, but it's not even votes for "free stuff," it's votes for less taxes (or so they say...I realize this is not true) which means poorer schools, roads, health care, and other government provisions. Taxes provide rights, as far as I can see.

It just doesn't seem very Christ-like to cling to your money (or to spend it frivolously) rather than help your neighbor who is in need. I don't think Jesus ever said, "Love your neighbor, as long as you think he works as hard as you and has had opportunity to get ahead in the past." I mean, what happened to giving your last coin? Alas, I will continue to turn the other cheek, Christian or not. I would really just like to hear a well-grounded argument from a Christian who is voting for McCain. I'm not trying to change views or votes at this point, I would honestly just like to try to understand!

As for the bedfellows, I see entirely how the religions right helps the government conservatives, but I do not see what they get in return.

Hey guys, really enjoying this discussion.

I don't want to change the subject, but I would like an answer to this question, which I think applies to the OP. Why is it, that most Christians side with the Republican agenda? I don't mean to generalize or stereotype, just to look at trends. I was raised Christian, which I have mostly moved on from (dang Catholic guilt!) and I do not understand how someone who supposedly follows the teachings of Christ can be in support of a capitalist system. I'm no expert on scripture, but time and time again, Christ taught us to love our brothers, and to help those who where the poorest and weakest among us. How then, can a devout Christian justify a Republican vote? Voting for an agenda that keeps the poor poor, the sick sick, etc. I mean, Jesus Christ is arguable one of the most influential reformers of recorded history, whether you believe in his teaching or not, and he was a compassionate socialist in every way that I can see. It seems so counter intuitive and wrong to me, I honestly don't understand.

Is it just the abortion issue? I feel like the Republican party has taken that stance just to nab votes...I'm not sure. Just wondering, thanks.

Taxes aren't the only way government gets our money. It's just the only way that is obvious to the average joe plummer.

How do we pay for an ultra expensive war while paying less in taxes? Hm. Check out the National Debt. We're in a war that nobody understands, the value of the dollar decreases, housing market crashes, interest rates and the cost of fuel and natural gas (30% this year) spike up unbelievably, stock market is completely wonky, unemployment rate is way up again, and because more people are unemployed more is taken out for health, food, and housing aid. People are either spending less money or borrowing more money because...well...our money is far more worthless now than it was 8 years ago.

But hey, we paid less in taxes this year!

America is our home, it needs some repairs, and we need to pay for them. Really, a slight to none increase in your taxes is the least of your worries during this election. Pay a bit more in taxes and watch everything else come together.

cheers. well said!

Interesting  . . . I find it a bit more remarkable that Palin  was not well versed in   John McCain's policies when she was interviewed by Katie Couric.  Although we should all be expected to know the issues and policies when we are voting, I am not surprised at this.  Let's have these same questions asked of John McCain supporters in the heart of a very red state and I think you would have similar results.  I would like to see someone post a link to something like that.

And I find it even MORE remarkable that Palin was duped by the Canadian Pranksters...She was not not tipped off when he said that Stef Carse was the Prime Minister of Canada and that Quebec had a Prime Minister at all. Oh hilarity! It is good to laugh:) Otherwise I would beat my head against the wall! There are incredibly stupid people on both sides of the fence, it is true.

Ahh.  So many reasons and so little time.  most of them tie into the city's value system.  It is the most liberal city in America.  SF has banned JROTC, display as open sex acts at fairs, marijuana decriminalization, and has an open-door immigration policies, has one of the worst mayors I've even seen, and is the home of Nancy Pelosi and Cindy Sheehan.  Just the tip of the ice burg.

The problem with "socialist economic tendencies" is that those "tendencies" tend to  keep growing into greater and greater tendencies until they are edicts, then mandates then -- the hell with it -- the Nannygov't has to just take it all and dole out exactly what it feels you need. Why don't 'wicked liberals' like you Wink ever take this "tendency" to it's natural conclusion? Have you nothing to say about the ever-increasing federal and state taxes? Do you EVER see an end to this "tendency"? When will you FINALLY get pissed off enough to say, "Y'know, gov't, I was silent when you were taking 45% of my income, but, now that it's crept up to 79+% I'm starting to get just the weeeeeeeeee bit concerned...." Do you think it's somehow "doing your fair share" to keep giving away more and more of your income to an ever-increasing, over-bloated government so that it can "spread it around"? Or do you feel that paying more taxes is the ...eh-HEM... "patriotic" thing to do? Socialism is a failed philosophy. It goes against practically every human instinct and how we're "wired".

Democratic socialsim vs. fascist capitalism? Please! National Socialism and Fascism are both socialist movements, with the government in control of every aspect of the economy. Good grief! Fascism does not allow for individual choice independent of the State. Capitalism cannot work if the individual is not free to choose within the marketplace. Fascism and Capitalism cannot co-exist.

Whoops! Knock on the door. Gotta go! ...now, where are my jack boots?

Dan...where to begin?

First, Communism and Socialism are two distinct philosophies and are not the same. Second, as you seem to be a student of history, then you must know that the National Socialists were NOT in fact socialists but ethno-fascists and perverted the term "socialist" in order to gain and maintain control.

Socializing our health care in order to provide every American citizen with the most fundamental of human needs (not a Saab) is NOT the first step down the pathway to a concentration camp or the gulag. It would only be a first step at changing our rank of having the highest infant mortality rate of any developed country.

Why do you say that the government "SUCKS" at being efficient? (and by the way, have you ever had to deal with a health insurance company...?) We have hands down the best interstate highway and postal systems in the world. We pay taxes, and the systems run. Because we FUND them. When WE pay taxes, you get something in return. It is quite a simple concept. We will never become a "socialist" country, we Americans are selfish capitalists at the core, but there is nothing wrong with socializing some of our programs, particularly the ones that provide the most fundamental rights, ie. health care and equal education.

I am a definite advocate of secession (I'm from Montana).  A nation created out of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Alberta, and British Columbia would make great sense.  First of all we have more in common with those states than say, Connecticut... and we're all part of the Columbia river drainage system.  But beyond my crazy secessionists ideals of course states should have the right to peaceable succeed and I think that it has less to do with red state blue state but more to do with economic similarities or maybe even cultural similarities than merely red or blue distinctions.

at least that my opinion

I have to disagree with your reasoning here. I grew up in Idaho and now reside in Washington and the views/economies are EXTREMELY different. I love the contrast between the two and I think we keep each other in check. On a larger scale, I enjoy the contrast all across the country.

Also, Alberta and Western BC have basically nothing in common with one another politically or economically, not to mention that they are part of Canada, and we can't just steal them.
