I love this thread, thanks for all the great ideas!

Things that keep me going:

- A good set of measuring cups and measuring spoons

- A high quality digital kitchen scale

- A Polar fitness heart rate monitor - lets me easily keep my exertion level at optimal fat burning level during a workout, and tracks calorie burn more accurately than any website could because it knows my weight, and heart rate throughout the entire workout

- Throwing out my own personal scale and only weighing myself at the gym, not 4 times a day at home

- My food dehydrator for making my own healthy fruit snacks and fruit-roll-ups out of applesauce, etc.

Foods that make it enjoyable:

- Salt-free Spike.  A spice mix.  Tastes good on everything, especially popcorn, chicken, mushrooms, roast vegetables, and...well, everything.  Description here. I buy it at Whole Foods and you can buy it online too.

- Chunk light tuna packed in water.  I have a hard time getting enough protein so this is a great food for me

- Oatmeal with raisins stirred in, oatmeal with a tbsp of maple syrup, etc.

- Homemade soups.  All the filling and healthy benefits of soup, but *I* control the amount of sodium that goes in

- Fat free plain yoghurt - I eat it with a tablespoon of jam stirred in for breakfast, sometimes, but even better, this is what I use to make all my "creamy" pasta sauces and curries now. Has the creamy texture I love but without the excess fat of cream.  Tastes almost exactly the same, you wouldn't know the difference unless you cooked it

- Al Dente brand Carba-Nada egg noodles.  Low carb, and tastes amazing, just like restaurant pasta.  And it's free of the chemical junk they put in most low carb foods.  Details here.

- Spinach, strawberry, tomato and goat feta salad, with some Annie's raspberry vinaigrette salad dressing.  My favourite salad ever

Is there going to be another exercise challenge for July?  That sounds like a cool idea, I could get in on that!

Well my stats are a bit hard to determine since the only scale I have at home is a real old clunker.  It says 245 right now, but I remember weighing myself about a month ago and being just under 260.  So either I've lost weight without trying (unlikely!) or one or both of the scales was wrong.

I tend to wear anything from a size 20 to a size 24 depending on the clothes.

I'm looking to get down to about a size 12, which I think for me would be about 150ish.  Also I want to be able to be active again, and to get back to loving walking, hiking, swimming and biking rather than dreading exercise!  My goals are more about body health and shape than weight I guess, but weight is tied to those of course.

I definitely have work to do both in the food habits and the exercise habits department.

Room for one more in here?

I'm in my late twenties and I want to lose about 100.  I'm currently sitting at just under 250, if the scale can be believed.  I want to get down to 150-160ish, although I may adjust that as it goes depending on how I look and feel, because I have always been curvy and I like that - I don't want to get too thin.

I just started earlier this week and I'm trying to start slowly and realistically.  I cut pop out altogether right away, and am drinking lots of water.  I don't really miss it, at least not yet.  I am still letting myself have a bit of chocolate every day, because I think otherwise I might just snap - I'm not good with drastic change.  I would love suggestions on healthier ways of getting the chocolate fix in.

My goal for right now is just to do some activity (walking, biking) every day, even if it's just for 15 minutes. I am also trying to eat healthier foods, and stay underneath my maintenance calories at least.  Working on a bigger deficit will come soon, but right now it is a big step for me to not be eating ice cream every day!  As sad as it might sound even these small changes are a good step for me and I feel proud for doing it.

Hope to get to know some people here better.  I know we can all support and learn from each other.  Who knows?  This site might be the best tool for health I ever found!

I'm another newcomer with 100 pounds to lose.  My current weight is somewhere around 250 (scale says 245 but I am sure it must be higher, and the scale is old) and I want to get down to 150ish.  I remember being 150, about 10 years ago, and I looked and felt great.  That's still my mental image of myself, and I want to reconnect it with reality!

To be honest though the weight isn't the important thing.  I just want to look the way I looked 10 years ago, and be able to swim and run and hike and feel invigorated again instead of exhausted. So it's clothing sizes and health that I really care about, I guess.

I've got some long standing bad habits (it's scary how far back they go when I think about it - I was hoarding chocolate bars in my room all the way back in grade 8! That was almost 15 years ago!) and I think that's going to be the hardest part by far.

Look forward to getting to know you all. I'm always happy to get some tips from those who have been doing this with success!

Hey everyone, I'm just starting too.  Looking to drop from around 250 (I don't have an exact number, my scale sucks!) down to something around 150 or 160.

I have a lot of rewiring of my brain and body to do, in order to get rid of the bad habits that have been making my weight slowly creep upwards for years.  I'm trying to be realistic and start at a reasonable pace so that I don't burn myself out.  So, for example, I've cut out pop entirely but I do let myself have a bit of chocolate every day. I think if I tried to cut everything at once I'd just be sabotaging myself because it's too much to do drastically.

Anyway I look forward to sharing stories with everyone and learning from each other.

Is there room for one more in here?  I just joined this week, looking to drop from my current weight (somewhere between 245 and 255...I don't know if my scale is trustworthy or not, it's as old as the sun) down to about 150-160.

I'm new to Calorie Count and this seems to be a good group for me.  This is from my intro post in the new member forum:

I'm still trying to get used to a new routine of food awareness, regular eating habits, and higher levels of activity. I'm hoping to find some people on this site who can relate to what I'm starting, and how big of a life change it is.

I wrote some background info in my profile, so people who are interested can check it out.  I'm hovering around 250 pounds right now (my bathroom scale says 245 but I'm not sure I believe it) and my target weight is somewhere between 150-160, so that leaves me with about 90-100 pounds to lose.

I'm not in a huge rush, so if it takes a year or two, or even five, that's okay. There's that old cliche - even if it takes me five years to do this, those five years will pass by whether I do something about my weight, or not. So I might as well make the change! Better to have it happen in 5 years than never.

At least...that's what I keep telling myself! Part of what I am trying to do is to teach myself that this is not about a quick fix. It's not about working hard and depriving myself, just so I can get to a lower size and then reset my behaviour to normal. This has to be about changing my definition of what 'normal' is. I have problems sometimes with giving up on things if I don't see results right away, and that is part of why I am looking for encouragement and motivation here. I know I need to convince myself that I'm in this for the long haul and that living healthier is worth it, no matter what size my jeans are.

I look forward to getting to know everyone here a little better and helping each other along.  Any tips would also be welcome, I'm still finding my footing as they say.  Thanks!
