Checking in: I have not done well the last week or two weeks. I guess I am off the wagon. I have not been logging or running at all. I think I might be a stress eater though I have never thought I get stressed out much. This last week tested that way of thinking. My father-in-law who is 89 had his sister go in the hospital and it was not expected that she would live. So, I and my husband drove 5 hours each way on the expressway to visit the hospital all in one day. I did most of the driving. (Driving through big cities like Osaka is certainly stressful.) Ten hours of defensive driving really wore me out not to mention the hospital visit with face masks and all (flu prevention). Luckily, my aunt is doing better though she is senile. The other thing that completely stressed me out was learning that my sister who is only a year younger than me had a heart attack. I still can't believe that could happen to her. She was in the hospital and had stent surgery, and it was successful. It is so hard being so far from where she lives in Kansas. Even getting through by phone is tricky. Thank heaven for the internet and email. So, all that threw me for a loop. I go hiking tomorrow, so it is a chance to get squared away with my health goals again. Sorry to cry on your shoulders. |

I have to admit that I have been AWOL as your group moderator. I apologize for that. I have had a couple of emergency situations. My aunt who lives in another prefecture was critically ill and I had to drive my father-in-law who is 89 years old to the hospital to visit her. We actually took our funeral clothes as we thought she might pass away before we got there. Then my sister who is 57 had a heart attack in Kansas. It has been stressful to say the least. I have done terrible in eating and feel sluggish as a result, and my work is suffering. My aunt is doing better though she is senile. My sister had surgery and is now out of the hospital. I guess stents are like a wonder for repairing hearts. I hope to get myself back together as the danger seems to have passed for both of them. |

Fortunately my relative has gotten better. I did most of the driving, so I was pretty exhausted. I did do some stretching at the rest stops. Unfortunately, I didn't eat well though I don't think I went over my maintenance level in calories. A lack of vegetables in my eating also tends to make me cranky. I ate some terribel potstickers at a rest stop as they tend to be safe bets and there are usually a lot of Chinese cabbage and green onions in them. Not so for the ones I got. I left half of them on my plate. My 88-yr-old father-in-law raved about the food. I think his tastebuds must be dead, or he gets out of the house so seldom, just eating out is a treat -even something as aweful as reststop food. LOL Today, I lolled around the house and rested. |

Thanks for the encouragement. I sure do need it. Even though I got 75 points in exercise last week, I didn't get any done this week. I am not sure if it was because I was too tired out or a combination of a heavy work schedule with a little apathy mixed in. Today, I have eaten chocolate a couple of times. That's not good. It's possible that I am going off the wagon. If I can just catch myself before I fall.... I must make a long drive tomorrow to visit a relative who has a lifethreatening illness. Four hours out and five hours back on expressways with a hospital visit sandwiched inbetween is not a good way to spend a Sunday. Maybe I can do some stretching and yoga poses when I have chances. |

Nice to read about some DVDs people are watching... My work schedule is pretty erratic at the moment, so my lifestyle gets to be in flux along with it. Yesterday, my eating was completely off course. I didn't overeat, but I ate at odd times and didn't eat proper foods most of the time. I am getting over my stiffness from the hard hike I did on Sunday though. I feel loggy. So, today, I commit to exercising in 15 minute increments and eating properly with lots of veggies. I'm making curry for dinner, so I'll load it with vegetables. I will get enough sleep tonight too. Thanks to everybody for inspiring me to stay on track. |

Check in: I have not done well the last 10 days. I guess I have fallen off the wagon to some extent. I haven't been logging at all and I haven't gotten any runs in in the last two weeks. A week ago, I got sick with a flu bug and just didn't feel well enough to take care of logging and jogging... I didn't overeat I am sure, and I did get some exercise in through hiking. Luckily the days I was guiding, I was in better shape. I have run 10 kilometers and walked a total of about 30 kilometers over the last ten days. Some of the hiking was over very rugged terrain, so even though I have fallen off the wagon all is not lost I guess. This week's topic is a tough topic for me.... I would like to tell you what white_sakura (meaning white cherry in Japanese) has to say about her tendencies. She has trouble when she has more free time. And, once she falls off the wagon, things tend to spiral out of control. She often sets the lapse off by eating some foods like chocolate or nuts. It can take weeks for her to recover from such an episode. Then, at some point she gets all the temptation out of the house and avoids buying tempting foods. In addition, she tries to keep herself super busy. I myself have noticed that I sometimes prepare for a fall off the wagon by stocking up on inappropriate foods as I cruise down the supermarket aisles. I wonder what tips the scales to not caring and passing by the tempting foods, or the opposite of actually going out of my way to stock up.

I have noticed that eating the 5 veg/fruits helps to keep me fuller and more satisfied throughout the day. Since doing the slimming minis for the last few months, I have gotten so I start thinking in the middle of the day whether I am going to do okay on getting those in for the day. It's hard to overeat some of the more fattening stuff if take care the veg/fruits have been consumed in the day. Of course, I still eat chocolates and things like that, but I'm too full and satisfied to eat too much. Winter is coming. I live in a temperate area, so I should be able to get my walking and running in through out the winter months. I have done terrible to date this month on this challenge. I caught a cold that knocked me down for a couple of days. I will go for mountain hiking tomorrow. I am the guide and expect to walk about seven hours over a fairly steep mountain. Going down the mountain is the worst for me, and as I am guiding, I'll have to keep a good face on it... I'm always ravenous after hikes like that, so I will make an effort to not overeat afterward. |

I had a bunch of emails from all of you today. Great going everybody. We are off to a strong start. On counting execise, this is the way I have been doing it: If you have 30 minutes walking in addition to 2 x 30 second planks, 50 crunches, etc. that would be 2 x 15 min. = 6 points, plus 1 point each for the other exercise for a total of 8 points. Anybody who wants to do the toothbrush challenge can add it to their points as a personal challenge.

Welcome aboard theprize and jamescl. I hope you can meet your personal goals and we can collectively get healthier. theprize - Yeah for baggy clothes. I have some too. LOL my top was gapping due to excess cloth yesterday... The exercise DVD idea sounds great. I can't go to the library, but they might have rentals at the DVD shop. I have four new exercise DVDs I bought recently and haven't actually watched/worked through any of them yet. I would be glad to do mine too. That would be good for a point for trying some new exercise routine via DVD, and another point for reviewing one. Of course, you would get a point for using the DVD anyway if the time exceeded 15 minutes or each 15 minutes logged. jamescl - Great going on the loss last month. I don't know anything about TOPS, but I know from my own experience here that there is strength in numbers. It IS possible to get into good health and a healthy weight range. PS. I'm in the turtle club too, but I'm working hard to get out of it. |

We are off to a flying start. I want to get 900 points. It's not impossible, but it will be very challenging. I'm thinking that starting into the holidays is an important time to keep my exercise level up. I want many of my points to come from that area. Welcome to all the newcomers. Any thoughts you have during the challenge will be much appreciated if you care to share. I think it's our collective willpower that keeps us on the right track. I was outside for five hours. Some of it, I was walking at a nice pace, and other times I was standing around. The air was so fresh and clean (and a little cold). I only counted three hours as actually moving with intention of exercise... Next weekend, we walk over a 1,200 meter mountain. I am excited about getting a workout there... |

At long last after more than a year of slogging through the trenches and clinging to the wagon sides for fear falling off, I am on target with my Wagon Jumper goals. I think I aimed just high enough to have a challenge and low enough that the challenge is achievable. I am on target for logging my foods and running 3Ks despite being down with a cold the last few days. (I really felt terrible for a couple days and couldn't participate in the 5K I was committed to and really looking forward to running. ... oh well. Next time.) Congradulations to those others who are doing well. And, if you are not doing well... don't give up. Do what you can each day towards your goals - even if it is a tiny thing. Success will come.

I was thinking a stone was 17 lbs, but I was too lazy to look it up. I bet I'm fat everywhere - visceral and otherwise. I would love to see Wales. I'm a quarter Welsh, but I don't know much about the country. I've been taking it easy with this cold/flu bug I have. Lazed the day away and read a trashy novel in bed for a while. Yesterday, I was so tired from it that I zonked out. I never do that, so my body was telling to rest... I have a cup of hot chocolate at night sometimes to keep off the cravings. Mine is 1/2 cup hot water, 1/2 cup hot milk, 1 T instant coffee, and 1 T unsweetened cocoa powder. It keeps me from getting the munchies when I am aware enough to realize that is where I am headed. Apples microwaved are my other alternative to out-of-control snacking. A whole apple will fill me up pretty well... On eating... I'm left handed so it's tricky to talk about. Everything is in reverse for me. I eat both European and American style according to the food and the people I am with. I tend to eat European in nice western style restaurants. Every week, I want to watch the biggest losers, but alas, it's not on TV here in Japan. |

Welcome Margaret! I'm not sure how much a stone is in pounds or kilos... It's great that you are solid. I sure wish I was. All jiggles here. LOL I am having a bout of the flu or something. Last night I was having chills and no appetite... I was to participate in a 5K race today, but I cancelled. I need to get over this by Wednesday. We are having a holiday on Tuesday and have plans for the day. So, I am hoping to be back to health by then. I rarely get sick, so I think I will get well soon. I listed up the Slimming Minis for November. Anybody who would like to join the challenge, you can find it listed in the forums section of Games and Challenges. I didn't do well last month, and in fact gained weight somehow or other. I need to exercise more! |

Another month starts today. It is the start of the eating season with Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, and lots of parties to celebrate such occasions. I didn't do as well I as I expected in October. I fell 250 points short of my goal of 900 points. I know when I reach 900 points, I usually lose a couple of lbs. Last month 204 of my points came from exercise. I want to up that to half of my points (whatever they may be) to be coming from exercise. Weight start 71 kilos. Goal of 900 points with half being from exercise. |

I can hardly keep up with work, caring for my aging inlaws, diet, exercise, etc., etc. I am not posting so often. Sorry everyone. I do read things, but my main goal is to log my food before midnight - which I often end up doing just before midnight. I love apples. I eat them most days. There is a lot of bang for the buck in terms of quality and quantity of food, taste and ease of preparation. |

It looks like I won't make my goal of 900 points. I will give it a good shot in the next few days though. Lots of exercise might be the tipping point. |

Another difficult to address assignment here, Sara... First check-in: Boy am I on a role. I am 100% on target and maybe even a little ahead for this go-round. YAYYY... I'm getting my 3 kilometer runs and more in regularly. And, I have been logging all my food at least 6 days of the week. It is nice to turn that around so I can see how much I am actually eating. On the running, I guess it helps to aim low and be able to over achieve the goal. I think my biggest problem in life in general is procrastinating. Here are my top three in order of annoying frequency: A double-punch (as they say in Japan) is "I don't have time" coupled with "I'll do it later." Of course, we know how far off "later" can end up being. If it is taking care of myself, I can put it on the back burner indefinitely. If it is work related, I can put it off until it can't be put off any longer. This is so ingrained, it's hard to think of some way to turn this into a positive thing. Thinking Positive: I have the same amount of time as anybody else - only 24 hours a day wherever you are, so I will use my time wisely like a precious commodity. I can set aside a little block of time to whittle down the backlog of things to do. I will not take on anything new until I am confident I can use time more wisely. "Why bother, it's hopeless." The "poor me" syndrome. It seems like no matter how hard I try, I haven't been able to lose the weight to below the "obese" level of fat. I know I am really making efforts, too. Positive: I learning all kinds of things about my body and how it works. I know a lot about what keeps me on track, what makes me feel physically better, what foods to eat, how to exercise. I may still be obese, but I am actually much healthier and a lot slimmer than when I started a year and three months ago. "My husband will get mad if I (supply the reason)." When I started jogging, I hid the fact that I bought shoes and was sneaking out to jog because he would say things like, "You don't have time for that." "You can't do that." "You need to do (...) first." I would not eat some meals because I knew he would want to go out later after work finished and would expect to eat and have a drink. I would think, "DH will get mad if I refuse to go," because it's more fun if we go together. There are quite a few things that make him irritated about my efforts to get healthier if it impinges on his lifestyle choices. Positive: Despite the challenges I face in learning to integrate a new, healthy lifestyle into my home life, I will never give up even after I reach my goal. I will approach each challenge with the attitude of "how can I enjoy this AND meet my health goals." Having said that, DH has a job until the end of next March, and is out of the house for the first time in nine years. I feel it is a gift of time from the Gods to boost my efforts to get into good health. I am taking advantage of having a more flexible schedule.

So sorry you have not been feeling well. I hope you get well and back in the swing soon. Doing a triathelon event sounds impossible to me, but it would be a great goal. I can run (not fast) and ride a bike (don't like it), but I barely know how to swim, so that would be a REALLY difficult thing for me to do. I have the goal of doing a full marathon before I am 60 years old. I'm in the middle of my 58th year, so time is of the essence. I ran a half marathon last year and it nearly killed me. I couldn't run well for three months after that. It's good to ease into that kind of event. Today, I will run (wog/jog/walk/run) 10K. It will be hard, but I really want to do it. Last year when I ran 10K, I felt like my body was revved up and metabolism in high gear for a whole week. Next Sunday, I will run (jog/run) in a 5K. My goal is to do well in that... EDIT: I got the run in and at a good pace for this nearing 60 year old gal! No wogging for me today. According to CC+ 's calculator, I run at a pace of 5.1 miles per hour. Very nice. Jogging is slower, and wogging is even slower. |

My knees were hurting a little yesterday, so I took a day off of running. I want to be able to run "strong" on Sunday. I have been doing an isometric type exercise of sucking in my gut whenever I remember to do it throughout the day. Even with only a couple of days of the exercise DVDs, I can feel my muscles tightening up. Maybe I can get the fat to melt off my back. Ha ha. Wouldn't that be great. I also am hoping to become able to do one full chin up before the year is out(as one of my New Year's resolutions of this year). A lot of the exercises on the DVDs strengthen the arms, so it seems quite possible. |

Checking In: I am completely on track for this go-round. I'm ahead on running. I might have stumbled on the right mix of things. I got my DVDs in the mail the other day, and I am trying them out when time permits. It's tricky with my schedule I actually put a recipe in for this week's assignment. I have a lot of recipes tagged that I made myself, but many of them are barebones descriptions of how to put the ingredients together as they are for myself. I love fish, and living in Japan, I can pretty much eat fish every day. There is a kind of salmon cut that is for sushi that is a fillet rather than a steak cut I like. I but a piece that will make about six slices of sushi but microwave it instead. I often drizzle a little olive oil and chopped peperoncini (mushrooms) over the top and microwave until it is just done. With a big salad and a small clear broth type soup I can eat well, get full and not go over calorie. The recipe I input is a little different. I usually use shiso leaf(the pretty little leaves that are often arranged with raw fish resting on them for a sushi presentation), but I substituted a fresh basil leaf for this recipe. I am looking forward to reading the other recipes. .....*-*-*-*- ..... Sakura - I live in Japan and teach English in my private school. I don't have to get up early every day (well didn't until DH got a job recently), and I don't finish teaching until around 9 or 9:30 pm most days. Sometimes, it is hard to fit dinnertime meals in and around my schedule. As a result, I used to often eat dinner after 10 pm. Then, in the morning I wouldn't feel like eating, but hey... breakfast is supposed to be so important, I would try to eat something anyway. That's mainly how I gained 80 lbs with such a poor meal schedule. It took me nearly a year to switch my meals around so that I rarely eat dinner so late. I am absolutely sure that has been a huge factor in me losing the initial 20 lbs I've lost here and the slow loss of the next 20 lbs. If I end up being forced by circumstances to eat late at night, I have a snack of almonds or slices of apple between 6 and 8 pm. Then, I have a regular dinner of about 500 calories. Sometimes, my schedule is so packed, it's hard to manage even that, so I eat a big breakfast with the protein and fiber factored in, a light lunch and two or three light snacks every 3 or 4 hours. At the end of the evening, I tend to stay under calorie for the day. If I can, I do some calisthenics before bed to rev up my metabolism, too. Even 25 crunches, jumping jacks, etc. or ten minutes of some kind of movement will have an effect. Then, I am properly hungry in the morning. I also usually eat breakfast within an hour of getting up. That helps to keep a good cycle for getting hungry at the right time of the day. Weighing everything helps me, too. Japan is metric, so I use that. When I log everything, I can see how much weight I took in of liquids and food during the day. Eating "heavy" foods (cabbage, tofu, winter squash, etc.) seems to help me as well. Don't give in. Find something you really like that is good for you and eat it in little snacks through out the day. My favorite is popcorn microwaved in a paper bag. You'll get over this hump... If you eat big in the morning, you'll probably feel a lot less like overeating in the evening naturally.

Years ago, I worked on the green chain - the place where you pull cut logs and boards off the moving chains. It was hard physical work and difficult for my 5-foot frame. I often did yoga after work. It's slow and methodically works all the muscles and in particular stretches the muscles. That is the best shape I have ever been in. I lived on a small island in Alaska at the time, and there were no teachers of yoga, so I used the book called Richard Hittleman's Yoga - 28 Day Exercise Plan. That was thirty years ago. I still use the book - it's so good. |

My new DVDs came, and I did one today called Turbo Jam by Beachbody. I did the 10 minute intro to how to do the moves and 30 minutes of Burn. I can definitely feel my muscles all over my mid section in the front and back. I worked up a sweat quickly, too. It was pretty fun even as lame as my efforts to move were. I liked it, too. I bought 4 DVDs and had my daughter send them to me. I spent half my day off figuring out how to get our old computer to do DVDs. We all miss Helene, but I suspect we will hear from her when she gets a chance to check in. No doubt, she is still busy settling in and renewing her sense of self in her old stomping grounds.

I haven't had time to contribute much lately. Sorry. Also, catching up on the posts takes a while. Sometimes I just don't have time. I'm keeping busy. I've been good with exercise and eating. Better than usual... I hope it's a trend. These days, DH is going off to work in the morning at 7:30 am. I work until about 10 pm most days, so I want to get up a little later, but as soon as he is up, I get up too. Grhh. Anyway, I've always believed that "the early bird gets the worm." I just have to be careful not to "burn the midnight oil" too much. Thankfully, DH is tired from his new routine and goes to bed at a reasonable time. |

So you can log your weight -- which allows you to do the following:
- Plot your weight curve
- Analyze the trend of your weight (see under Recent in the figure above)
- Determine the projected target date (see under Overall in the figure above)
