First of all, I think there's nothing wrong with being on a generic pill. It's just a non-brand name version of one of the brand name pills. No difference in the drugs you're getting.

If the pill you are on isn't helping you, you should probably talk to your doctor about trying a different pill. Each one is a slightly different balance of hormones, so you might find that a different one works better for you. Some of them don't have generic versions. I have no idea where you live, but are there any ways for you to get samples or cheaper pills, like family planning clinics or something similar? Often if you talk to your doctor about finances they can suggest something, or they may have samples they can give you. Drug companies love to give doctors samples so they often have them lieing around.

As for your mood, it sounds like you're going through some life stress right now that is probably making everything much worse. Maybe it's time to branch out and make new friends? It can be really hard (trust me I know, I have major social anxiety), but it might help you to feel better if you make the effort. Then when things have cooled off with your current circle, you can try to smooth things over. If you want to. I really know nothing about you and your friends so I can't really advise you there.

I am sorry that you're feeling crappy, and I definitely would tell you to not be afraid of going on an antidepressant. It's not such a big deal, although I know it can feel like it. And it can take time to work, and then to find the right medication to work for you, so the whole thing takes patience. What helps is to have support along the way - a doctor or even just somebody to talk to, like your mom, a friend (I know your friends are being asshats right now), or a counselor. Do you have access to a counselor through work or school? Are there resources in your community for people who can't afford counselling? (Which can be freaking expensive).

You've just got to hang in there, and try not to give up or get too frustrated. This site is a great place to come to for moral support also, so please continue to utilize it!

Fitness Naseous when working out- Any Advice Apr 06 2009

A friend of mine does hot yoga, and she told me that a lot of people get sick when they are first doing it... because of the toxins coming out of your system or something. Even vomiting is supposed to be fairly common.

I think all the stuff the above poster said sounds like it could be a factor too. Don't try to work out on an empty stomach, but not a full one either (like, eat a small snack maybe a half hour before working out).

Also I find that if I push myself really hard in a workout, it can make me feel sick. I think it might be the adrenaline. I don't think that would be a factor with yoga, although I know some forms are more intense than others. I've only ever done the boring slow kind of yoga so I don't really know :) I've never thrown up from working out too hard but I've heard people say that they have.

Thanks everybody for your responses. I think I am going to go see my doctor. I almost went to the clinic today but decided to give it one more day... I still haven't had a bm... so yeah I'm not super happy at the moment :/ I don't plan on trying any cleanses or dietary changes until I talk to my doctor though, I would hate to do something that might make things worse.

But to answer some of your questions... I don't eat sugar substitutes at all. I avoid caffeine for the most part. I do drink occasionally (like, maybe once a week I have a bottle or two of cider or beer, or a few glasses of wine, but nothing too much).

I suspect I don't get enough water. I try, and I've been trying more lately... but I know I'm still not there for getting enough.

Looks like my average for the past week was 16g. So I guess I should work on getting that higher. It's hard to get enough! I was looking at Metamucil but I think it's more of a laxative, and it says you can't take it within a few hours of other medications, which is a problem for me because I have different meds I take at about 2-3 times per day. So it would be hard to find a convenient time that wasn't within a few hours of that. Also, I am sort of wary of fiber supplements (especially the pill form ones), because I've heard that if you aren't really careful about getting enough water too then they can make things even worse.

This sounds like it might be rosacea. You should probably talk to your doctor about it if you're worried. (Rosacea isn't a harmful condition, it's more of an embarassing condition).

I've been wondering if I have sciatica too, but it's a bit different for me. I have pain in my lower back like right between my butt cheeks... and in my hips. It doesn't really radiate down my legs, maybe a bit into my thighs. When I have been lieing down or sitting for a while sometimes it is quite difficult to walk! I have asked my doctor about it before but havent mentioned the word sciatica because only recently have I heard about that term... and I don't think I've ever explained the pain to her very well so she has never diagnosed it as anything. Does it sound like sciatica to you guys?

You sound like me before I started using this site. What has worked for me is logging everything I eat, whether I know it's been a bad day or not. Keeping honest about logging has seemed to help keep me rational about my choices. For example, in the past, if I started having a bad day, I'd say to myself "screw it" and just keep going, as if there was no stopping after the mistake. Now, I will realize that if I stop... then it wasn't actually such a bad day after all.

Another thing that has helped me is being realistic about what I can do. I can't make myself eat completely cleanly. I crave sweets, I like to eat big portions sometimes, and I hate salad. I just try to keep everything in moderation. If I really feel the need to eat more than the 500 deficit I shoot for (even if it's for emotional reasons, like I have my period and I really need a chocolate bar!), I give myself a break and do it, I just try to keep my calorie intake around maintenance.

I've lost almost 20 pounds since I started in June, it's slow, but sure, and I don't feel like I'm compromising anything to do it. It isn't a "diet".

I think one of the biggest problems I used to have was the guilt that came with eating. I used to freak out and think I was getting fatter, and then basically give up, figuring "I'm already a whale, I might as well enjoy my food." Now, even if I wake up feeling like I'm having a fat day, I can at least look at my calorie log and see that actually I have been eating a reasonable amount, and so I avoid binging out of guilt or giving up.

Good luck, I hope this is useful to you in some way. This site really has helped me to get my out of control eating back into some realm of normality.

Besides, it's almost impossible to tell with restaurant foods because you just can't tell what's doing what and what's been added where.

Tell me about it. Maybe I'm paranoid, but even if a restaurant lists its nutritional info, I'm never convinced that the food didn't get prepared with extra oil or cheese or whatever. So many things can add huge amounts of cals :/ But I agree with you that sometimes it's totally worth it.

Weight Loss Dinner Time Calories Nov 12 2008

Original Post by brokeirishlady:

Sue,

I tend to want to nibble after supper a lot of times because it is down time for me..... what I discovered I could do when I really want to snack is to make a bag of microwave popcorn. Most of the standard bags are 3 cups of popped popcorn and the whole bag is only about 120 calories. You can lower this even further if you use a hot air popper versus the microwave ready bags, but it's not quite as convienent (sp?). The thing to remember with the air popper is that you can't add all the butter and salt that you might want.... but the butter salt isn't too bad and doesn't actually have any calories. It is however LOADED with sodium so keep an eye on that.
Kerry

Be careful about microwave popcorn. All the bags I've ever seen have more than 2 servings per bag... and clock in at around 200 cal per serving... so a whole bag is more like 400-500 calories.

Weight Loss Certain foods affecting weight? Nov 12 2008

I really doubt that a few handfuls of cereal are going to throw you off. You could always try to measure them (for example, measure out one serving of cereal each day, put it in a baggy, and snack on that throughout the day, that way you know how much you ate).

You should give us more of your info, though. There are some common reasons on here I've noticed why people have trouble losing:

- not eating the "magic number" of calories (which seems to vary from person to person, and often takes some time to figure out... to aim for a deficit of 500 seems to work well for a lot of people). So this can mean you might be eating too much, or too little.

- hitting a plateau - which means you need to change something up, maybe try some different exercise routines

- you may be a healthy weight to begin with, in which case your body isn't going to make it easy for you to lose more weight! if this is true for you, you should probably consider exercises to help strengthen and shape your body rather than focusing on weight loss.

There is a lot of talk about different foods and their benefits or not, but the bottom line is, a calorie is a calorie. As far as nutrition and what satisfies your body's hunger, that's another story! 100 calories of candy bar is nowhere near as satisfying or filling as 100 calories of broccoli. Well, maybe more satisfying if you're on your period ;) but you get what I'm driving at.

Hope this is helpful, good luck.

Most chocolate bars around here are more like 230-250 calories.... not the king sized ones, the regular ones. I eat one once in a while, and it's definitely worth it! You just don't want to eat them all the time.

Weight Loss Drunken Eating....AWFUL Nov 08 2008

I'm really bad for the drunken eating thing too. But since I started calorie count I haven't been drinking NEARLY as often. Because alcohol has soo many calories in it. Do you know how many calories are in a big glass of long island iced tea?? I won't even tell you.

But don't beat yourself up, just try to learn from your mistake. I think your biggest mistake was not eating enough before you went out... like the other posters have said. Combine that with decreased willpower from drinking AND the fact that alcohol tends to make your body want/need food, and you're hooped.

Weight Loss To be me or not? Oct 28 2008

I think I'm in the same boat. I'm at 155 right now (I'm 5'4")... my goal weight is 130, I'm down 15 lbs from 170 (which was a scary weight for me). I've been maintaining at 155 for about 6 weeks now, and I am starting to wonder if I really do want to make the push to get as low as I thought I wanted to be. I know I can be healthy and active at the weight I am, and I feel (pretty) good about how I look.

I am probably going to alter my goal weight, maybe aim for 140 to make it a bit more realistic and less about ideals.

What we should both do is... stop comparing ourselves to others! And focus on what feels right for us.

Weight Loss How come I feel BETTER after eating a giant cookie and chocolate bar?? Oct 26 2008

Just a word about cookies... I remember actually weighing one I bought at a coffee shop (i took it home) and found out that it had 750 calories in it.

I bet your big cookie had more than you think, too.

But I also don't think you should deny yourself something delicious, especially if you're having an intense craving for it. I find that being aware of the calories in something helps me be realistic about whether or not it's worth it, and at the very least lets me know how bad I'm being so I won't do it *too* often.

Health & Support How long before birth control pills start to work? Oct 25 2008

My doctor once told me that the reason they tell you to wait a month is because it takes that long for most women to get used to taking them. If you take them at the same time every day and don't forget, a week should be enough.

But... I'd recommend starting them on Sunday just to be really safe. It depends how much risk you're willing to take.

Health & Support I'm not bulimic. Oct 18 2008
23:39 (UTC)

Good for you for talking to your doctor. I don't know a lot about bulimia so I can't really offer you any "real" advice but I think the fact that you threw up after overeating, even if you weren't aware of feeling guilty or whatever (and assuming you didn't just eat something that was off or you don't have a bug), probably means you are still dealing with bulimia and definitely need to get help.

Have you seen the information on this website? http://helpguide.org/mental/bulimia_signs_sym ptoms_causes_treatment.htm

There is a phone # help line for people with eating disorders, maybe you should give them a call.

National Eating Disorders Association’s toll-free hotline at 1-800-931-2237

And, from that website I got this, too...

The importance of deciding not to diet

Treatment for bulimia is much more likely to succeed when people stop dieting. When bulimics stop trying to restrict calories and follow strict dietary rules, they are no longer overwhelmed with cravings and thoughts of foods. By eating normally, they can break the binge-and-purge cycle and still reach a healthy, attractive weight.

So you might want to think about that. I don't know if keeping track of calories really counts as a "diet" but it does make you think a lot about what you're eating... and I can imagine that for someone who has had trouble with an eating disorder (past or present), analyzing everything you put in your mouth could be counterproductive.

Good luck, I hope this was helpful!

Fitness Elliptical Cal Count Wrong? Oct 02 2008

Original Post by alisha_m:

I was told once by someone who has a masters in sports medicine that they are not very accurate, but are a nice guideline.  She said that it's way more important to measure your heart rate and stay within a reasonable range.  Here's a link I found that talks about elliptical calorie counters: http://www.allellipticals.com/elliptical-trai ner-calorie-burn.html

That's a pretty high heart rate.  I am 26 and my BMI says I am overweight.  I've been using the ellipticals at my gym for 10 months.  My heart rate is usually around 72 to 75.  Any higher than that and I get light-headed and sometimes dizzy.

Here's a link to what your target heart rate should be: http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml? identifier=4736  She told me that there are no benefits to excersizing above your target rate.  It does the same about of good for your body, but just leaves you even more exhausted.  Good luck!

edit: I meant 172-175

Oh FYI I'm only 23 so I think it's safe for me to have that high a heart rate. But, I have been thinking lately that I'd be better off working a bit easier and not exhausting myself so bad. I don't really like the feeling I get when my HR is that high anyway, I feel really out of breath and maybe a bit light headed too.

Fitness Elliptical Cal Count Wrong? Oct 01 2008
22:51 (UTC)
14

I personally worry that the calorie count amounts overestimate the workload. I always put down what the machines say (although I use the ones at the gym so I think they're fairly good). I usually do around 200-220 calories in 28 mins of fairly vigorous effort. My heart rate goes up to around 170-180.

Maybe you should check your heart rate by using a clock/watch with a second hand, and counting the pulses? Usually you can find a pulse in your neck or wrist fairly easily. One suggestion is to use your first two fingers rather than your thumb to feel for the pulse, because the thumb has a strong pulse in it or something and that can confuse you.

Count how many heart beats you get in 10 seconds and multiply by 6, that gives you your beats per minute.

If you're going really fast on the elliptical, you might be burning more calories, especially if the machine isn't counting your heart rate properly. It might think you're doing less than you are. Although not all machines are sophisticated enough to take heart rate into account, they just estimate the calories burned by how many steps you take (I think). Anyway hope this helps.

Foods Do you have a control food? Sep 26 2008
21:56 (UTC)

I don't think a control food would work for me. When I get really hungry, I actually start feeling sick, and don't want ANYTHING. I also get extremely indecisive about what to eat. I often have to get somebody to tell me what to eat, or force myself to eat something small to get my appetite back again.

And no I never intentionally get to this point, I try to avoid it, but sometimes I just forget to eat because I'm always running around being busy. I really have lost all conception of how much food my body needs and when due to issues with overeating... so counting calories has been really good for me.

Weight Loss Do I even need a calorie deficit? Sep 25 2008
23:17 (UTC)

I agree with you in that I'm not on board for the "clean eating" thing. I've lost almost 15 pounds over the past 3.5 months by working out 3-5 times a week (cardio and strength training), and keeping my calories at or a bit below my light exercise level number from this site (I am now 156 lbs, I started at 170... my light activity burn is apparantly about 2070 calories, and I tend to eat between 1500-2100 calories a day).

I eat what I want, but I keep it within those calories. If I want a treat, I certainly have it, I just make sure I know how many cals are in it!! Like the other day I bought a cookie, weighed it, and found out it was 700 calories (it was a big cookie), so I only ate half of it. If I have a big lunch (like today, I had a footlong sub for breakfast/lunch), I have something smaller for dinner. I try to never skip meals but I will adjust the calories in them depending on what I've eaten throughout the day.

I know you're not looking for weight loss, just toning, but what I'm trying to say is, for me, I have found that a calorie is a calorie. I am losing weight in spite of not banning anything from my diet. I don't eat junk food every day by any means (it'd be impossible to keep within my daily limits if I did), but I don't eat extremely cleanly either.

What I would suggest for you is to try eating the way you do normally and add strength training. You will probably be really happy with the results. I am finding that even at my current weight, 155 (and I'm 5'4"), I am feeling really good about my body, better than I would've expected to. I thought I'd have to lose a lot more before I felt this good. And I attribute it to the strength training more than anything else. It really changes your body in good ways, and you feel stronger too.

If, after a month or so of regular strength training, you don't feel you're seeing enough results, then maybe look to your diet.

Also keep in mind that some of us do have bits of fat here and there that we just can't do anything about, they're genetic. So there's some level of just accepting who we are in there, too. Anyway good luck!

Fitness recumberant bike versues regular stationary bike? Aug 27 2008

I find that for me, biking isn't the best way to burn calories (which is what you will want to do to lose fat, burn it through aerobic exercise). I just don't get my heart rate up enough cycling, and it only really uses your legs.

I'd recommend getting an elliptical trainer over either bike. That's just my opinion though.

Weight Loss Having Issues Aug 14 2008

I find that for me, it's all about just getting to the gym. I can tell myself I'll just go (ie physically get myself to the building), and see what I feel like doing. Then I always end up doing a lot more than I thought I felt like.

Sometimes I don't feel I have the energy for a workout or whatever. But I always have the energy to get to the building. And then I do whatever feels right when I get there.

For me, having workout buddies has actually NOT helped. Well, it helped at first, but then they started to lose some steam I guess... and many times I will call to see if they want to come with me, and they don't. That makes it so tempting for me to also stay home. But I battle it off by following my above advice... just freaking GET to that gym! And also by thinking about my goals, the progress I've made, and reminding myself how much better I've been feeling overall since I made going to the gym a regular priority.

Weight Loss Why does my weight NEVER change no matter how much/little I eat? Aug 06 2008

I definitely gained weight for not eating heathily. Like I said, a guilt relationship with food really led me to some bad behaviours, like restricting and binging on junk. I think I hurt my metabolism pretty bad.

I mean there's been a lot of factors to it, I had trouble getting exercise for a long time due to a knee condition, and I've been on meds for anxiety/depression that definitely have made me put on weight. But the poor eating habits are probably the biggest factor.

Original Post by wrenster:

Why would you want to lose weight? Your BMI calculated from your figures is 22.0. This is well within the healthy weight range (20-25).

There seems to be so many people on this site who are both young, within normal weight limits but still unhappy with their weight/body. This is what I find most troubling.

Be sensible. Thats my advice.

It makes me nuts too. But I can understand it. I'm about 5'4"... I'm 23 now. And I'm about 162 lbs. When I was 15-16, I weighed 125-130, and I was never happy with myself. I had an unhealthy relationship with food (always felt like I should be dieting/exercising/eating less, felt guilty all the time when I ate anything, really borderline eating disorder)... I think that is how I ended up gaining so much weight as I got into my 20s. I am only now learning about how to eat healthily, and I've been working on my self esteem in therapy. I'm feeling better about myself now at 162 lbs than I did at 125 lbs! Of course, I'm still hoping to get back down to that weight which is much healthier for my height.

Anyway what I'm trying to say is, I know how it feels to obsess about every little detail of your body. I would definitely recommend exercise but not with weight loss being a goal. Keep up a healthful diet but try to be gentle with yourself if you ever make mistakes. Too much strictness can't be maintained forever.

Try keeping a diary about your feelings, especially about yourself. One thing I tried doing for a while was, to write down all the things I did that day that I felt good about. Focusing on the positive can be really helpful.

For example, you should feel great about yourself for caring about your diet and eating well, for getting into an exercise habit early on in your life (it's sooo good for you). Those are two huge things and I bet there are tons more that I have no idea about from reading your one post :)

Good luck and please don't focus so much on the numbers on the scale. You *are* a healthy weight for your height. Focus on how great exercise makes you feel.

I was on birth control for about 8 years and went off it for 6 months this year. I'm back on it because I was getting too paranoid about getting pregnant :) But, when I went off it, my period came right on time (maybe a little heavier, but I never got scary awful cramps like I used to get as a teen), I didn't lose any weight, my boobs did get a wee bit smaller maybe... basically I didn't notice any differences. No changes in mood, although some of my friends have reported HUGE improvements in mood when they went off it. I noticed when I was ovulating and I felt very fertile... lol that's basically why I went back on it.

Weight Loss How much fiber do you consume? How can I add fiber, without the calories?? Jul 23 2008

I try to choose items with added fiber, there are lots out there. Let's see... I eat rye crackers that have added fiber... and I put some Fiber 1 cereal in with my Kashi Go Lean. Or sometimes I make a parfait with Fiber 1, berries, and yogurt.

I don't know the answer to whether or not eating more fiber will help you with weight loss. It's definitely been shown to have many health benefits though.

There are also fiber pills that I've heard about, but if you take those, make sure you get enough water with them, or they can really gum up the works!
