your recruiter should also be running morning PT and is VERY HIGHLY motiviated to be sure that you do it.  They will even pick you up!  If you want to be in shape for basic, I reccomend you do that.  Can't beat the comradery either.

My friend joined the Marines, and I went with her to PT in the mornings when i stayed over.  Very cool.

I agree with the nut butter stuff.  Also try Sunflower Seed Butter (Sunbutter) adn sunflower seeds.

Ensure and other protien shakes tend to be high in calorie, but be careful of the protein content.

no cardio is going to bulk you up.

sprinters that HAVE bulky legs, are bulky because they do weight training to add muscle not all sprinters have bulky legs either.  Look at American Olympic 200m sprinter Alyson Felix.  She's extremely lean, and easily outran the other girls at the trials ( I watched, it was impressive)

now if you have like no muscle tone at all, yah youll see some gain in mass, but you won't be bulky, you'll just have muscles to support you.  you'll look healthy, it will help you avoid the unhealthy concaved appearance I see in so many young girls.

I have no problem with thin people, I have always been thin, but I've always been active, so it's been a toned thin.  muscle is sexy!

I am experiencing the exact same thing except that in this case me (the wife) is the one who changed the lifestyle, and my husband is the one saying I'm getting too thin.

at 5'11" and 173 i'm not exactly a little girl, and i know my bf% and all, so I know i'm no rail.  I've been working with a personal trainer to lower my bf% and up my lean muscle mass, so I have only lost about 7 lbs since march, but i've lowered my body fat by 7%, so i'm a lot leaner.

my husband is overweight, and i've told him that I'm concerned for his health, but I don't push him.  and he's giving me the same "you're too thin" shtick.  he's beein "trying" to lose weight, but hasn't changed at all and I've told him my help is available if he needs it.  so I empathyze.  I've found that suddenly as I've completely stopped talking to him about fitness and healthy eating, he is now asking me questions about his food choices.

I always invite him to go with me to the gym, and cheerily say "oh, ok, I'll see you in 40 min" when he declines, and I'm always excited when he goes with me.

Fitness Ballet Jul 23 2008

you don't have to have slippers, but new simple ones are not that expensive.  trust me, if someone has old ones, you don't want them.  it's important for your foot to be in the shoe from the beginning, because even the regular kind of ballet shoe (they come in fabric and leather) conforms to your foot over time.  Your foot will sweat as you excercise (in any kind of workout) and soften the material which will then shrink/stretch to fit your foot.

I accidentally grabbed my friend's slippers once and noticed RIGHT away, even though they were exactly the same as mine, same age and everything.

i love to put stuff on my salad, sometimes a little low fat cheese (feta and goat cheese are great), i'll do falafel, grilled chicken, but my number one fat is tofu.  special consideration for it tho:

  1. rinse it off
  2. marinate it in your fav salad dressing (like italian)

tofu takes on the flavor of marinades very nicely.  I like to use firm in my salads, yum!

Fitness carbs good thing or bad?????? Jul 19 2008

I am a huge fan of the carb/no carb debate! /crack knuckles

ok! here we go!

what you want is you want to get the most bang for your carb.  there are empty carbs and healthy carbs (that's the way I see them, no good and bad here!) and here are some examples:

Healthy:

whole wheat bread

brown rice

whole wheat/ brown rice pasta

Empty:

hostess cupcakes

potato chip

cotton candy

what is important to remember is that your body HUNGERS for nutrients and energy.  So eating whole wheat bread, which naturally has lots of vitamines and minerals, is going to satisfy your needs better than plain white (i.e. wonder bread) bread, which is made with enriched flour.  They take out about 3xs the nutrients they put back in with their so called enrichment.  not to mention the added fiber of the whole grain assits in satiating you...and moving other things along ::ahem:: if you get my meaning Wink

so you want to get the most bang for your carb!  Other healthy carbs include fruits and veggies, those have a lot of bang for their carb, with vitamins a plenty and relatively few calories!

as far as protein goes, if you go out and eat only hamburger, you're going to shoot your cholesterol through the roof (most likely).  besides, plain hamburger is generally made of NECK MEAT (ick!) which is not very meaty at all.  you want to shoot for LEAN protein, like skinless chicken, lean cuts of beef, and fish is always on the menu.  Shellfish is also a good one!  the most important thing to remember is don't eliminate anything!

if you completely eliminate fat you'll get very ill, the same goes for anything!  so get the most bang for your carb, and be healthy!

heh, you won't need to "prepare" for it.  that's what the first week is for!!!  what you don't want to DIE with everyone else /gasp

do what you can for now, the best advice i can give you is to do what the coach says and don't complain (it's just irritating to the other swimmers), but don't over do it. =)

congrats on your recovery, keep up the healthy lifestyle!

every instance where i've known or seen women with extremely bulkey legs, they have worked very very very hard for a long time to get them to be that way.  PERIOD.

muscle wise anyway.  i'm talking about women that work out for several hours in a day, not just 30 minutes or an hour.  And they train for YEARS to get that look.  you won't turn in to a figure competator with average gym attendance.  not to worry ;).

weight training is good for you!

wessdogg:  now that I've been doing mostly calisthenic exercises, and free weights, that I dont like doing the machines.  But i'm really weird, and i like to do as much as possible to make sure that i'm using my own total body strength to support myself as possible, rather than a machine.  If I can lift more with a machine than i can with free weights, then i feel like my core support is probably not enough, and that's why I can't do as much.

to me, doing one muscle at a time is kinda silly, because when you move your muscles all work together.

yah you can isolate muscle groups, and focus on them, but that's different from using a machine to hold the rest of you still!! LOL!  Take it from me, i'm a bellydancer, the best way to isolate is to practice over and over again and teach your body to support itself so you can do it right!

Original Post by ladykelien:

I have a daughter who is watching her weight as well but in the opposite fashion. She doesn't need to lose weight. She just needs to not gain anymore. At 7 years old shes alread 4 foot 5 inches tall. Unfortunatly she weights 104 lbs. She was my pre mature baby. She was born at 28 weeks gestation, and she is my only child out of 6 that is over weight.

For the most part she has always been fine with it. She has a healthy self esteem. She says shes like pooh and aunt kate. Pooh is cuddly and aunt kate is beautiful, so she must be cuddly and beautiful too. And she is. But, now that Im on a diet, I can't get her off the scales. If I weigh or her father weighs she has to too. She says, mom did I gain any weight? With a look of dread on her face. This started because two things happened. I started having problems finding clothes to fit her and my father died of heart desease complicated by type II diabietes. He was only 55. Everyone knows he was way to young. She is now scared if she doesn't get skinny that she will end up like her Papa.

Its hard to say, hon its about health not size. What that scale says doesn't really matter. But for her it does because she knows that the way she gets skinny as young as she is, is to maintain the weight she is at while letting her height catch up to it. So she has become obsessed with not gaining weight.

My husband and I both need to lose weight. Ive put off dieting because, I didn't want Stephie to feel pressured to be thin, But, we can't put it off anymore for our own healths sake.

Wheather your a mother with a skinny child that is starting to worry about getting fat or an overweight child, trying to figure out the best way to get skinny, when they are that young, its tough. Saying and doing the right thing is critical yet your never quite sure what the right thing to say or do really is.

the best advice i recieved was actually from my sister.  She said:

"try to focus on everything being healthy.  That you want to be healthy, that you want your husband to be healthy, and that she wants to be healthy too.  Focus on the relative healthiness of foods, and helping her make healthy choices."

As soon as we did that (we eliminated the terms 'fat' and 'overweight' from our vocabularies), and started focusing on making healthy choices (positive reinforcement) she changed too.

we go to a restraunt, and she doesn't know what she wants, so I'll find something healthy and tell her "this is healthy, and that is healthy, and there is also this this and that" so she is making the choice on her own to be healthy, and I make healthy choices too.

now she doesn't even try to hop on the scale, except once in a great while.  she does love to go to the gym with me to walk on the treadmill.  she does "one lap" and then sits on the floor next to my treadmill and colors the rest of the time.  " I have to get ready to go hiking when we're camping mama" she tells me.

Fitness same number but different look Jul 19 2008

the reason you are tired is because of the binging.  health and fitness is:

  • 50% being active
  • 25% what you eat
  • 25% how you eat it

if you eat well, you can be healty, but not fit.  if you work out you can be fit but not healthy.  if you eat healthy foods, but they are prepared in unhealthy ways (i.e. salad slathered in full fat bleu cheese dressing, served with fried chicken, lots of extra cheese, croutons and sugared nuts) then you may as well eat a burger.

eating poorly (i.e. binging, or starving yourself, just plain poor food choice) will make you feel poor as well!  Think of it this way, if you put leaded fuel in an unleaded engine, it's not going to work very well (or for very long).

how you eat food also refers to how much and how often you eat.  Ideally you want to prevent yourself from feeling really hungry.  Usually your body is ready to eat BEFORE your stomach starts grumbling.

simple advice?

  1. Variety
  2. Preparation

with this SIMPLE idea in mind when you think about food, you'll find you change alot, from the way you feel, to the way you think about food, very quickly.

plan to have about 6 small meals a day, Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner, as well as a snack in between.  The simple rule here? don't eat the same thing twice in one day.  go to the store and get some of your favorite fruits, nuts, low fat cheeses, low fat yogurts, cereals, salads or sandwich makings, and dinner foods.

plan out your snacks!  Have a fruit.  still hungry? have something else!  still hungry?  have something different again.  sometimes you feel like you need to eat more because you're not getting enough of something, and with variety you make sure to give your body as many different nutrients as possible.

ok i'll stop here, ::wordy::

Fitness running routine for only 30 min/day - Should I be running for more than 30 min? Jul 19 2008

Couch to 5k workout is great, and only 30 minutes pretty much.  There are downloadable podcasts that are timed to do the interval runs.  I am on set 3 of week 6 of it, and it's working great.  The workout times vary from 25 min total to about 40 min.

I am always getting bored, so I understand what you mean about wanting some variety, i'd highly reccomend this workout for that.  I havn't gotten bored with it yet!

I don't have Wii Fit myself, but I use my sisters.  I think most of the workouts are kinda silly myself, esp the balance stuff, but I think that for someone who is not in that great of shape, it's a great way to get up and get the blood moving.

I would also like to state that I am the household balance champion. (at my mom's house anyway).  I also love the little person that says "THAT'S NORMAL!" at you at the beginning.

my fitness buddy sent me this today.  I usually do calesthenics rather than weight machines with my trainer, and free weights if we do weight lifting because it works more than just one muscle .....afterall......we generally use more than one muscle in natural motion anyway.

http://www.bestlifeonline.com/cms/publish/bes t-body/10_Machines_You_Must_Avoid.shtml

My gym has a 20 min limit on cardio equip "when people are waiting" and our gym is extremely busy, so people are always waiting when I go after work.

If you need to share with some one usually what you ask is "can I work in my sets with you" and then during their rest period you get to go.  Any (real)fitness mag will tell you the same

Ch33ry I know that you don't know me, but I want you to do me a HUGE favor.  Whatever you do, don't stop exercising (unless it's dr.s orders).  I freaked out too, and afterwards found out I had no reason to.  For generations women have worked hard in fields all day long and had many successful pregnancies.

NOW I'm certainly not telling you to over do it.  what my research yeilded was that if you worked out before you were pregnant, and you continue to do so, then you can keep doing what feels comfortable to you!  Trust me, your body will tell you when you're doing something you shouldn't.

I freaked out and didn't exercise, and ate whatever my cravings desired (mostly hot dogs and whole chocolate milk) and gained 70 lbs.  It has been 5 years, and with lots of hard work I just got back to pre-pregnancy shape.  You don't need to eat a ton of food, contrary to popular belief, instead have an extra snack.  Keep it healthy.

Don't do what I did, you'll be sorry later trust me!

Health & Support stretch marks? do they go away with weightloss at all? Jul 14 2008
23:59 (UTC)

unfortunately stretch marks are scar tissue.  they never completely go away, but they will fade with time.  i gained a lot of weight while pregnant, and got the stretch marks then (I'd never had any before).  They've faded signifigantly, but have never completely gone away.  Though the ones on my abdomen have shrunk a lot.  Just be sure to lose the weight slowly, and your body will adapt pretty well in most cases.  I also apply lotion, but clinically it's never been proven to do anything other than make you feel better to my knowledge.

I know it's not the "try this miracle cure" post, but sometimes a little insight and truth is just what the dr. ordered.

Something I learned from my friend is this, the number on the scale is not what's really important.  Don't be so focused on that.  Maybe the women who weigh less but look the same have lower muscle mass, and higher body fat %?  who knows!

Yah, I watch the scale some, but the really important things are:

  1. Being healthy (that means maintaining internal organ health, and smoothly functioning metabolism)
  2. Feeling good (energized)
  3. Body Fat % (kindof goes with being healthy) ther is a min you must maintain for bodily function.  If you are concerned whether you are toned enough go get this measured with a pinch or dunk test.  that will give you the best idea of the status of your body =)

I've seen your pictures, you are beautiful, don't let the scale rule you, you're too good for that! (I have to tell myself that all the time!)

funny enough, actually, if you tone up, like start working on your core strength, and some upper and lower body strength (you can do it all w/out a gym too, get a good calesthetics (SP?) program from the internet) you might put on a few lbs of muscle, lower your body fat %, so you'd actually have a higher number on the scale, and a lower number on your jeans LOL!

Weight Loss How often do you jump on the scale? Jul 09 2008

I weigh whenever I go into the upstairs bathroom, the scale is right there by the toilet, i just like to watch.  I only pay attention to the first weigh in in the morning when I wake up before I hop in the shower.

I actually don't track my success by my weight though, I track it by body fat% which my personal trainer only takes once per month.  I watch my weight because I used to have 10-20 lb fluctuations in a month because of hormones, so I have to make sure that doesn't happen (I'll literally change 3 lbs +/- over night, but I'm a tall girl so I probably have more places to hold on to water) When that happens I know I need to really cut back the salty food, and drink an extra glass of water, and that always helps.

The thing I'm really happy about is that I got a dress the other day, and it was a size 8, I havn't worn that size in probably a good 6 years.

Yeah - most people in the US have a skewed sense of portion size.

I go out of my way to tout healthy portion size in my house, I have a 5 y/o little girl, and I want her to be raised to pick healthy choices on her own.  So the bowls that we have only hold 1 serving of cereal, and we usually use smaller plates, etc.  If you finish something and you're still hungry, I encourage my daughter to choose something else for variety.

My BFF comes over, and complains about the size of my cereal bowls (which I went OUT OF MY WAY to pick) saying "don't you have any REAL bowls around here?".

I find when I go to a restraunt I need to just stick 1/2 to 2/3 of the food on my plate right into the to go container, because it's WAAAAAY too much food.

ok the best thing you can do for her, is talk to her about what's REALLY bothering her.

My friend died because of her ED.  Her twin sister had to go to an in-patient recovery center.  Don't go to her and say "you're gaining weight" instead talk to her.  Is something really bothering her?  Is she taking her meds like she's supposed to?  your job is to be there for her as a friend.  Don't try to be her nutritionist, or her therapist.

If she needs one of those, as her friend it is your job to gently aim her in the right direction.

You know, my mother warned me about that too.  I gained 70 lbs with my daughter, and I lost it slowly, but she warned me early not to eat her food.  She said "you are not the garbage disposal.  Let her have her plate, and you have yours, you don't need to share germs or calories."  And she was right.  Slowly the weight came off, I just tried to eat as healthy as I could.

My girlfriend's mother must not have warned her, however, I went with her somewhere, and was shocked to see how much EXTRA food she ate because she was trying to get her daughter to eat by eating mouthfulls of her food, and then picking up the crusts and leftover bits from her daughter's food.  Then she complained that she wasn't able to lose any weight!

Also remember, that how you eat is an example to your children, so if you diet in an unhealthy way your children are liable to pick up on that and think it is normal.  But it will make you smile inside when your child orders for themself at the restraunt and always asks for fruit or veggies instead of french fries.

PS i got up to 240 after having my daughter, she's going to be 5 soon and I'm down to 170 with 26% body fat =)  slow and steady wins the race!

Weight Loss My Scale is Broken!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Jul 03 2008

as a person that likes to hop up on the scale constantly, mostly because it's there, I would like to share this with you.

weight is not everything in your health.  what about body fat %?  what if you were 20lbs away from your goal weight, but your body fat was unhealthily low?

If you really want a scale, go to consumer reports, and get the one that is rated for accuracy.  Why? because ultimately it's your overall health that matters, not the number on the scale.

Wheather you make your "goal weight" or not, I'm sure you will look, and even MORE importantly FEEL great.

PS if you want to measure body fat % go to a fitness place and either get the pinch test done with calipers, or for further accuracy, get the dunk test.  those are the most accurate ways to do it.
