| I am a huge fan. I think they have a totally undeserved bad reputation, as part of a healthy overall diet. I would go as far to say that they are a pretty good food chocie to start the day with every so often, they keep me full for hours and prevent sugary cravings later in the day. My favourite combo is sausages and bacon (grilled), egg, mushroom and tomato cooked in olive oil and wholegrain toast for getting all the juices.
Lots of protein, fiber from the beans, iron from the meat (important since am getting over a phase of anaemia!), vitamins and minerals from the mushrooms and grilled tomatoes, whole grains from the toast, bit of fat for keeping me full - PERFECTO BREAKFAST |

There was a survey done where they asked a group of French women and a group of American women what words they associated with 'Chocolate Cake'. The word most chosen by the French group was 'Celebration' whilst the word chosen by the Americans was 'Guilt' Live like the French! Birthdays are there to be celebrated, not agonised over. I hope you had a lovely time :) One weekend will not undo the rest of the year. |

Chick pea curry can be made in a massive batch and heated up later - I actually prefer it heated up the next day, it seems to taste better! It's very easy and cheap too - veg can be bought cheaply from greengrocers/markets, cans of chickpeas are rock bottom. A great stand by meal! 1 large onion Chop up all the vegetables, grate the carrot, cook them all in a tbsp oil in a large pan. When soft, add the chick peas and the sauce, then bring to a simmer. Let it cook for about 15 mins, or until the veg is cooked through. |

Yeah I agree with basing meals around 'add ons'. e.g. Baked potatoes with salad -on top of daughters she could have regular cheese etc. on top of yours you could have cottage cheese Fajitas - in daughters she could add guacamole, cheese etc, whilst you just stick with chicken and vegetables in yours Keep bread on the table for her to eat with her dinner, but skip it yourself Both of you need to eat lots of fruit and veg and wholegrains - base meals around a healthy component and add or take away calories as needed with toppings/portion sizes/extras etc. |

| Foods | Toast before bed... | Aug 14 2009 14:06 (UTC) |
|
The only reason I try to stay away from food right before bed is because it gives me night mares if i have much food in my stomach during sleep! I get really vivid, scary/angry dreams and it messes me up! I really don't think that eating before bed has a negative effect on weight though, as others said it is the total calories for the day that matters. If you're hungry you should eat - it is more important to learn how to peoperly recognise your body's hunger cues and fulfill them sensibly (as you are doing by eating this snack) than to deprive yourself and then probably have a grumpy/hungry nights sleep because of it. |

Nutella is amazzzzing :D However, I really don't think of it as a nut spread. There are not huge amounts of nuts in it, and the main ingredients are sugar and fat! It's yummy, but if I 4 tabsp a day like that I'd be giving my ass its own post code. Gimme almond butter any day :D |

Suzushii, great tips, but I have always understood that it should go: Warm up-THEN stretch-exercise-cool down-stretch. Stretching cold muscles can do more harm than good and leave you sore the next day. 1) If you want a treat, walk/run/bike for it. E.g. A half hour walk to a nice ice cream shop for a cone on a summer day is fun and better for you than just loading a whole container of ice cream into a car with the weekly shop. 2) My bf plays alot of computer games. He does sit-ups during the 'loading screens' - I have no idea what these are but he informs me it is helping him get fitter! 3) Do things the long way round. I purposely keep things not at arms reach at my desk at work. If I need an envelope etc I must walk round my desk and go to the stationary cupboard

I'd do a test... don't drink it for 5 days, record how you feel. If the mood swings go away, I'd stay away from coffee as it obviosuly doesn't agree with you.

| Yeah it sounds a good base for variety, and nuts/fruit in it would keep me going longer I think.
I am loving chocolate oats at the moment - I stir cocoa powder and raisens into oats and it is really good, so i I sure it would work well with rice too with similar results |

mmmm that sounds good! I don't know if it would do me very well for breakfast though. Whilst its a good amount of calories, the white rice and sugar might leave me hungry again pretty soon after. Perhaps a small lunch/dinner with this for dessert would work well too, yummy! |

I like some kind of pasta dish. In the week I'm a wholewheat pasta/veggies and tomato sauce kind of girl. But every now and then I love just baking pasta in some kind of cheese sauce with an egg stirred into it, with cheese on top. Proper comforting, warm, european loveliness. No worrying about getting my 5-a-day, just flavour and pleasure, and having fun making creative things in the kitchen. Or I'll eat a frozen pizza to myself - but I love veggies so a whole veggie pizza (with extra veggies on top) can be about 800 cals which isn't tooooo bad to fit into the day, and it makes me happy. Or I eat at my bf's house and he is very much into his red meat, so normally its something like pasta with spicy sausages in it, sauce and white bread/garlic bread on the side. Or meat balls...mmmm |

A big slap of home made millionaires shortbread that sits in my freezer. Shortbread made with real butter, with a layer of thick caramel on top, and dark chocolate on top of that. I try and only bring it out for guests, or hack a small chunk off it then whack it straight back in the freezer after dinner so I'm not tempted to eat the entire thing haha. It's lasted a good 6 weeks now. I make a pact with myself - I can have cake but only if I bake it myself so that I know whats in it and its not full of chemicals and preservatives. |

I think getting back into a regular exercise routine is the most important thing for me if I ever slip up. Let the food issues take care of themselves for a while, but just really really focus on starting up regular exercise. The feeling of achievement and happy exhaustion after a work out is such a motivator to carry on and do good things for your body. I find that when I exercise, I instinctually want to eat healthy food and find it easier to say no to the junk. So contact your gym and find out when the aerobics classes are on, or write a chart for yourself with a jog pencilled in every evening and stick to it. Your motivation will come flying back, I promise! |

I read on another forum that you can make a pretty tasty dessert by mashing an avocado with some unsweetened cocoa powder and sugar/agave nectar, it comes out into a sort of puddingy consistency. I've yet to try it myself though! I did have a wonderful experiement result the other night though. Freeze a chopped banana, then whiz it up in a blender and it comes out the consistency of soft-serve icecream - it is truly quite amazing. It looks and tastes like banana ice cream, but fruit is its only ingredient! It has changed my life :D I bet you could experiment by adding spices like cinnamon to it before blending, or adding some blueberries or nut butters on top before eating. I make a smoothie for breakfast sometimes but it comes out so thick that i eat in in a bowl with a spoon like soup for breakfast! I blend fruit with oats, seeds, nut butter and a little liquid (fruit juice/soy milk - is that classed as raw though??) It keeps me full for a good while. You can make your own 'bars' by blending up dried fruit e.g. dates, prunes, raisens etc. with oats, nut butter and a little liquid (fruit juice, splash of water etc.) and press it all down into a baking tray and refrigerate, then cut into bars. To jazz up salads and veggies i sometimes make a sauce out of blending up an avocado with varying combinations of spices/pepper/tiny bit of garlic/herbs/lemon juice etc, loosen it with some cold pressed olive oil or some water, or something juicey like a tomato, then pour it over your veggies. |
