| Weight Loss | Men trying to drop the weight!! | Nov 14 2008 14:09 (UTC) |

So what's the best way to determine a healthy weight. Using BMI, my healthy weight is around 150 - 170. I haven't weighed in that range since college, and I was a pretty skinny guy then. That seems way low. To save you searching above, I am 48 yrs old, and 5' 10". My goal weight is 185, but according to BMI calculations that only gets me to a "slightly overweight" category. How is everyone else figuring their healthy weight goal? SW:245 (10.1.08) CW:236 I an exercising 5 days a week alternating strength (M-W-F) with cardio (T-Th). on weekends I am active but don't do a formal workout. Yard work, camping (this weekend), home repair. I don't just sit around in other words. I notice some of the weight loss results are more rapid than what I am seeing for myself. I am maintaining a 1000 cal deficit on average, but the lbs seem to be coming off slowly (9lbs over 7 weeks). What's anyone else doing? |

| Recipes | T-Day dilemma: A turkey without added fat or salt? | Nov 13 2008 21:10 (UTC) |

I rub the turkey with a little olive oil. No butter. I have never brined a turkey, and they are fine and moist. Use a meat thermometer instead of the lottle red pop-up thing. I have heard roasting breast down is good too as another poster suggested. I've never tried it. Anyway rubbuing the bird with a few tablespoons of olive oil shouldn't present a fat concen, you will be roasting out more fat than that while cooking. Don't use a self basting (sodum injected) bird and you won't have a sodium issue. |

Oh...but be sure to read the labels. Some canned beans have lots of salt added to them. Drain them and riunse them in cold water. |

Once soaked and cooked you can throw them on salads too. Dried beans are great, but if soaking and cooking them doesn't fit with your schedule you can get them canned. They're easier and faster to use that way. |

| Fitness | Exercise Induced Asthma | Oct 09 2008 15:14 (UTC) |

I've had asthma for 30 years or so. Asthma has many triggers and they vary by individual, for me its allergies and sometimes excercise. I don't use a pill, I use Advair, whcih is an inhaled powder (like one of the other posters) and abuterol. Advair and the pills are medicines that control the asthma and are used daily for maintenance. Albuterol is used to reduce the symptoms of a flare up. It essentially dialtes the air-passages that have constricted (causing the attack). So using albuterol is not really preventative, and won't prevent EIA, it just dialates things so you don't notice the flare up as much. I only use albuterol pre-work out if I am already feeling a little shortness of breath. The daily maintenance medicines are preventative and help keep the symptoms from apprearing when your triggers occur. Advair for me, pills for others. It depends on what your doctor recommends. Like the other poster, when I keep up with the Advair, I almost never need albuterol. |

| You can usually see that on the back of the package, what they consider a "serving". Having just looked last night, the spghetti box I had said 2 ounces was a seving. | |||

| I use these workouts and really like them. The set I have has 4 workouts on 2 DVDs. Foundation, Energy, Strength, and Power. Like the previous poster said they require good leg strength and mobility to do with vigor. But, if you start with the foundation workout and go at your own speed, it is not difficult to pick up. You will develop leg strength just trying to keep up. Billy Blanks even recommends holding on to a chair if you're having trouble.
So you can start slow and work up to their speed. I sure everyone on the tape has been doing these for years, so they have all the moves down. I'm still learning and have trouble with some of the more complex combinations. I'd probably be dangerous in an aerobics class too! I think I paid $15 at WalMart for the set. |
