I also have seen recipes where you just put the "prepared" massa in ramkins then put the "stuffing" kind of inside and/or on top. These are baked. I believe they were in a water bath though. I LOVE making tamales and have a great recipe for red chili sauce and salsa verde. OMG... I still have a few in the freezer from last time. I just pop them from the freezer to the microwave. These are salsa verde and chicken. |

I teach yoga. I love yoga. I love being naked. NO WAY do I want to teach a bunch of naked yoga people! OMG! One of my fellow instructors taught yoga at a nudist resort. She kept her clothes on but most everyone else was naked. She said you kind of got used to it but it wasn't really a pretty sight. She DID NOT make any adjustments! |

I think that things have changed over the years. I am in the US. When I graduated from high school I didn't get anything and it wasn't a big deal for me or my family. Actually, same with college. I am almost 50, have a decent income, and can afford to give gifts. When I get a grad announcement or invitation to a grad party (hs or college) I give $40-50 and a photo album or nice silver/gold tone bookmark. That way they can use the money for school, car expenses, whatever, and have a little momento. Financially, I could probably give more, but I don't want them to think that money grows on trees either. My brother-in-law lost his job. It has been really hard on them. They have 2 kids going to college now. When they graduated from hs I gave them $75 in cash and put $400 into a stock account (too bad the stock market sucks right now! Actually, I guess it is a good time to buy!) I wanted the kids to think about investing. It is never too early to start. A little bit invested every month will grow to something substantial. |

Back in college I tried smoking a couple of times and didn't like it (thankfully!). I had a gf that smoked and I thought about how much money she spent on her habit--that was when cigs were $.50 a pack or less! I decided that I saved about $4/wk NOT smoking, or about $200/year. Every year I went out and spent about $200 on myself and called it my smoking ____ (jacket, boots, sweater, etc). When I told people that "These are my smoking boots" they would look at me funny and say, "But you don't smoke" and I would respond, "You're right! That's how I can afford $200 boots!" I can't believe how expensive cigarretts are. I don't know how people can afford to smoke! No wonder they can't afford health insurance in the US! I heard a pack is about $4-5 at a pack a day that is about $1600 a year! I think I am going to go on a "smoking SCUBA diving trip to Roatan, Honderus" with my husband! |

My in-laws are PA and my husband is sometimes, however, when he starts to ask me for my opinion for the 4th or 5th time (like, do you think this needs another coat of paint? after I have said yes 4 times!) I stop and talk about why he is acting like this and he actually listens and is starting to change. He realizes that he has problems on communicating some times because of how he was raised. Believe me, I have my own set of communication problems because of how I was raised, and I work on it all of the time, especially with my adult children. They are actually starting to appreciate it! We do not have to repeat the mistakes of the past.... |

| The Lounge | Underage drinking | Sep 29 2009 22:47 (UTC) |

I started drinking w/ my mom at home when I was in junior high (don't recommend this!). The legal drinking age was 18. #1 I think that the legal age should be 18-- if a person is adult enough to vote, serve in the military, or get married, they should be old enough to drink. #2 I think that kids should be exposed to alcohol (granted my mom went to the extreme) or they will "go crazy" when they get the chance. My kids were allowed a glass of wine or champagne for Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, etc. They were "sherry" glasses, so only about 1.5 ounces about 6 times a year. When they were in their last year or so of high school, they could have a bit more. Results: My daughter drank VERY responsibly in college (except her 21st b-day when her friends got her REALLY drunk and she swore NEVER again). My son did pretty well until he got around my ex-husband who "taught him" how to drink scotch. They both graduated college in 4 years and have solid employment and aren't big drinkers. I guess it worked for us. |

In the big picture of life it really doesn't matter how you log your w/o. It is what it is (or was!) You at least showed up! So, log it as light calisthenics, or stretching, or massive burn or whatever .... and tomorrow do more! Go for it and have fun. Show up! |

I have found that when I am exercising a lot, like lifting and spinning, I need more protein. I weigh about 150 and end up eating about 80-90 g of protein and feel much better. Otherwise I feel hungry and edgy. The charts, graphs, etc. are a guideline. I usually get less salt than they allow. My sugar may be a little high, but like one of the other posters said, I eat more fruit on some days, and I am okay with that! |

My husband just read a report in one of those car and driver mags that said the Audi 8 (I think it goes up to an 8!) was one of the top cars for performance and maintanance. I used to drive Audi 5000's (3 of them) back in the 80's and 90's. My friends have had nothing BUT trouble with their Infinities. Me, I drive a jag XK8 and LOVE it... except for really long cross country driving. After about 4 - 5 hours it starts to feel stiff. |

| The Lounge | Spanking? | Sep 21 2009 18:42 (UTC) |
127 |
I was spanked a couple of times as a child. NOT a beating. I spanked my kids a couple of times for serious things when they were young as mentioned above... hot stove, running into the street. To me a spank was ONE smack on the butt or a slight slap on the hand. NEVER a bruise. NEVER repeatedly. SO, to the people who DO NOT spank. How do you explain to your 2-3 yr. old child why they can't pull a pot of hot oil or water off of the stove? Or that they can't run out into the street when you want to hold their hand? When my kids were that age they thought it was a game. A quick smack to their bottom on 2-3 occasions was all it took. I didn't have to do it more than 5-6 times in their life. I could take my kids EVERYWHERE... and I did. Beatings are NEVER appropriate. But I see too often in stores or restaurants the kids running amuck, throwing food and ice, screaming their heads off for a toy or candy and the parents saying, "Stop it. Do it again and you will have a time out. Don't do it any more or you will be sorry (for the fifth time!)" until the parent backs down and does whatever the kids wants! That to me is child ABUSE! The kids are horrible and no one wants to be around them. The kid grows up to be even worse as an adult. |

I just log xx minutes in whatever activity I am doing my HIIT in. I usually do on the spin bike. I warm up for 10 minutes, do 6 reps of 1min hard, 2min recovery. (18min) and then do a couple of minutes of fun stuff like a cadence build (60 rpm, 30 sec. 70 rpm, 30 sec. 80 rpm, 30 sec, etc. to 115rmp) It only takes a couple of minutes and I think it is fun. Then I cool down. About 35-38 minutes of moderate stationary cycling. No more than 1x per week... |

| Fitness | Weight Training with Shoulder Injury - Help! | Sep 19 2009 18:19 (UTC) |

I injurred my shoulder in November and am JUST now getting back to weights 4 weeks ago. In PT they gave me really LOW weights -- it was more range of motion. And they would stretch my shoulder out really well. I was doing lat pulldowns with only about 20 pounds, shoulder shrugs with 2 pound wts, lateral lifts w/ 2 pound wts, bicep and triceps w/ 5 pound wts. Some band exercises and pressing against the wall. VERY wimpy. Hardly seemed worth it. Eventually, my shoulder got better but it still hurts a little bit. I guess it will depend what you hurt. Don't rush into it. I hurt my rotator cuff. Good luck. |

Everyone goes through adjustments. You will survive this! As everyone else has said, find activities. Church groups can be fun, sport activities. I used to turn to someone in one of my classes and say, "do you understand this?" and then start studying together. If they seemed pretty nice, the next time I would say, let's do lunch and study afterward... If you did this in every one of your classes you would have so much going on you wouldn't have time to be homesick. The part time job is a good idea too. And volunteering! I used to volunteer at a hospital and some other charities. Sometimes it was stuffing envelops, other times, working as an usher at a live theater show. I always met fun people volunteering! Go to the gym and take classes... then talk to someone in the class and ask if they want to swim a few laps, play a game of tennis.... you get the idea. YOU have to make an effort to talk to people. A great way is to ask questions? Where is the best coffee shop? Hamburger? Want to go? Where are you from? You have any brothers or sisters? My mom just mailed me a box of cookies, want to come over and watch a movie and eat them? Also, think of one thing you want to SHARE... best place for ice cream, best dry cleaners, something! That way you are bringing something to the table. Good luck! Have fun.... You will learn so much about yourself... |

I don't have an ED but my husband is going on a LONG bike ride with his buddies tomorrow and the gals aren't invited. I am SO looking forward to a Saturday by myself! I have a list of things I want to do, and even a few that a should do. I don't know what I want to do first! I try to eat the same general things every weekend for breakfast. Hmm... probably leftovers for lunch. I think I will fix a nice dinner for when he comes home... maybe have friends over too. Occasionally my husband is gone for the whole weekend and then I call up all of my single gf's and do movies, dinner, happy hour, whatever! I miss him, but I have a great time! So, HAVE FUN! Maybe you will have so much fun that you won't remember you have an ED... :) |

You can wear clothes that play up your head and make it appear more in proportion. Same with hair (as mentioned above) and makeup. Don't worry about it too much! It is, what it is. Think of all of the truly important things in life, like the soldiers that are missing their arms or legs..... |

Sometimes it also helps for a change of scenery. Go for a walk, go to the library, play tennis, etc. Break the cycle of where you are binging. Of course, getting rid of the junk in the house helps too. That way if you DO binge you are eating a pound of carrots or a head of lettuce! Oh, I also found that brushing my teeth after dinner stopped me from having another glass of wine... first it tastes yucky, and second, I am too lazy to want to brush my teeth twice! Good luck! |

| Weight Loss | What if you're hungry? | Sep 17 2009 17:54 (UTC) |

Hmm, cake in the house... that's a BIT tempting! Prepared chicken salad is really high calorie too. When ever I get really hungry all I have to do is look at my log and it becomes painfully clear to me! I need about 80 g of protein because I have an active life. If at the end of the day, I am below that I often feel hungry. Lately, I have found that I eat a HUGE fresh salad w/o dressing with about 3-4 oz lean protein for dinner, I CAN'T eat anything else. Even when my husband makes fresh-baked cookies! I try to fill up on quinoa, wheat berry and brown rice. High volume foods that keep me full w/o a ton of calories or fat. On days that I eat out I find I am out of calories and still hungry at night. |

I really like the program in the book New Rules of Lifting for Women. There is a group on cc where you can ask questions and read their posts. It is a full body workout. The first few weeks are pretty easy in that you can get it done in about 30 minutes but still feel it. It progresses as you get stronger and more confident in lifting. I like the fact that the routine changes -- you do different exercies. There is w/o A and w/o B. Every few weeks you get a new A and B. Sometimes the exercises repeat but it is fun to change it up. It REALLY does work! |

Doing the same activity 4x/week for 2 years sounds really boring to me, but not overtraining! If I were you, I would try some yoga to relieve the stress and anxiety and help your back. It is also good for re-energizing you! Practice yoga 1-5 times / week. Maybe some pilates and weight training. Then have some fun and take a hike, bike ride, kayak, etc. Good luck! |
