| Pregnancy & Parenting | how hard is it to lose the baby weight when it's your second? | Oct 30 2008 01:56 (UTC) |

Had my second on April 28th, I started dieting on July 1st and so far I've lost 21 pounds. I got pregnant at 150lbs, was 198 the day I delivered her, after coming home from the hospital I was down to 187. On July 1 I started at 184 pounds and today I'm 163, I'm trying to get down to 140 which I should accomplish sometime in April. I'm breastfeeding and I eat 1800 calories / day. Just keep in mind that if you're breastfeeding you can't diet for the first 8 weeks while you establish a good milk supply. Good luck and congrats! |

You're "heavily pregnant" as they say my dear. It sounds like your BF is just trying to stay out of the way of the steamroller! LOL I get c-r-a-z-y for the last 3 months of the pregnancy every time. ;) I think you need to take a day off and get that prenatal massage that every woman deserves. It may seem like you have SO much to do because a baby is new and definately scary and you want to feel "prepared", but trust me, you're never going to feel prepared. Even if you go out and buy every diaper in the tri county area, hire a pediatrician, a backup pediatrician and a backup for him as well, you're still going to find yourself sitting on the floor a week before your due date working up a sweat from folding onesies all day long and cursing at your bf under your breath. I get it, you want him to be where you are mentally... He doesn't have to go through the morning sickness or the swollen ankles, the back pain or the sleepless nights... He should at least have to go through the neurotic preparations?!!? Right? LOL Not really. Men just aren't built that way. By "letting" you make the decisions he thinks he's helping the situation. Adding another element into an already stressful situation and all. But to answer your question about men going to doctor's appointments, no, they don't. I've never had one go and I'm on my second marraige. They also don't seem to go to immunizations (who would want to it SUCKS!), nor do they ever seem to have to go ANYWHERE alone with the baby! It's just the way it is! When the baby does come you'll realize how silly all the stress and preparations were because all you really needed were some jammies, a few blankets, diapers, a bassinet and a carseat. That's really about it. The hospital will give you alot of stuff and most of the baby items don't even get used for the first couple of months. They eat (breastfeeding ROCKS soooo much easier at 3 am, and 4am, and 6 am LOL), they sleep and they poop. Motherhood is manual labor... No tools required. Plus, after you come home from the hospital with that little bundle of joy you'll find yourself looking back to these last few months of your pregnancy wishing you had spent more time pampering! You'll wish you had taken long drives with no particular destination in mind, wish you had done more of the things that make YOU happy, and longing for the days when just getting a shower in wasn't a struggle, where you didn't have to haul 30 pounds of carseat and baby around with you everywhere you have to go (cause you don't go anywhere you WANT to go anymore). I know it is SO hard with all those hormones running through you but just try to do some things for yourself and try to appreciate the people you do have in your life because they'll be the same people you call crying at 1 am because the baby wont stop crying, you haven't showered in days, haven't slept in 4 months and you haven't had sex in so long you can't remember. Ahhh... the joys of motherhood. :) Sounds kinda sucky huh? Just wait, it is SOOOOOOO worth it. ;) |

| Pregnancy & Parenting | tubal ligation pros/cons | Oct 15 2008 16:29 (UTC) |

A tubal is MAJOR abdominal surgery. Weeks of recovery, etc. Plus, it's quite expensive if your insurance doesn't cover it (thousands!!). I made a deal with the hubby during this last pregnancy... We decided that if for some reason I had to have a c-section I would go ahead and get my tubes tied while they were in there ;) but if I was able to have her vaginally then he would get a vasectomy. Well, thankfully I was able to have her the old fashioned way nearly 6 months ago. The hubby finally went in for his vasectomy last Tuesday, it cost us $390.00 (no insurance), it was performed in under 20 minutes they used no needles and no scalpel, he told me the only thing he felt were the air injected pain killers which felt like someone was thumping him down there. He had some minor swelling that night (he took 1 dose of ibprofin) and the next day he felt fine.

carolann - as long as it measures in grams instead of pounds / ounces then yes. Although I'm not sure if postage scales have a "tare" function and if it doesn't then that makes it more complicated since you'd have to remove each ingredient prior to weighing the next, or keep a running total and subtract the grams as you go along... |

I have a digital paint scale that I use to measure everything I eat down to the gram. After using it religiously for over a month I took a couple of weeks off thinking that I should be able to eye the same portions. Well after the two weeks passed and I didn't lose an ounce I decided to start using my scale again. I made a normal lunch that I would probably log at around 500 calories, but when I weighed everything out and entered the weight in grams it turned out that 500 calorie meal was actually more like 800!!! No more eyeballing for me! A food scale is the way to go. Even preportioned foods (like a slice of precut cheese for example) that list the calorie content per serving on the package can be WAY off! A slice of muenster cheese is supposed to be 80 calories according to the package, but when I weighed it the grams were way off! Turns out that 80 calorie piece of cheese was actually 120 calories! Definately get a scale, you'll be shocked at how many more calories you're taking in than you think. |

Your running shoes are too small! I wear a size 9 shoe, but for running shoes I have to buy a 10 1/2!! MOST women wear their running shoes too small, you should go to a running specialty store and have them suggest the right shoe & size for you. |

| Calorie Count | Yet another Burn Meter question : ) | Aug 07 2008 13:36 (UTC) |
5 |
The burn meter shows you the calories you HAVE burned not the calories you need to burn. Above your burn meter you'll see "Total Estimate" that is the number you need to work from, keep your calories at 500-1000 below that number and you'll lose weight. The burn meter number just shows you how many calories you've burned so far that day. |

Wow m0m6 that's HARSH!!! If I locked the credit cards in a safe and threw away all my bf's sweets he'd surely have me commited!!! LOL I have to have some sweets every day as well, but I just make sure to fit it into my plan. I buy the "real stuff" for my bf and my son and for me I buy: "Slim A Bear 100 calorie ice cream sandwiches, 100 calorie packs of shortbread / chocolate chip cookies, rice krispies treat squares (100 cals each!), Enteman's 100 cal brownie bites & 100 cal muffins, and weight watchers lemon cakes (79 cals each!). I also usually keep a couple of "3 musketeers mint" bars in the house, 2 bars to a package and each one is only 75 cals, for when I have to be really naughty! Hehe. I stay between 1800-2000 cals / day and I usually eat my meals in the following pattern: B: 300 cals L: 500 cals S: 200 cals D: 500 - 700 cals (depending on my calorie goal for the day) Desert: 300 cals I eat healthy meals and try to get as much protein as possible (I aim for 90+ grams a day). I usually have 2-4 servings of vegetables with dinner and forgo the potatoes or pasta that I make for the boys. I eat big meals, I just eat them in a smart way! For breakfast I either have: oatmeal and fruit 2 servings of "better n eggs plus", 2 pieces of bacon & a piece of wheat toast with spray butter or "Heart to Heart waffles" and 2 servings of "Better n eggs plus" These are all FAST meals that I can whip up while the baby is in her swing (and before she starts to meltdown LOL) they're all healthy and they're satisfying for at least 3-4 hours For lunch I eat whatever I want that contains at least 15g of protein and fits into the 500 cal limit (and I do mean anything) For dinner I eat steak, center cut pork chops, pork loin, grilled chicken breasts, tacos (with fresh corn tortillas, lean ground beef, veggies and salsa), We even pick up taco bell / subway from time to time. Eating this way enables me to have 3 - 100 calorie deserts every single night and I think that's probably what keeps my fingers out of the box of honey buns and that big apple pie I bought for the boys. :) Good luck mommies!

:) Thanks for all the advice everyone!!! I have to admit I've been googling "Dog Attack" myself. LOL Although it seems we did exactly what we were supposed to do in that situation, still scary though. My FIL also told me to get a can of BEAR mace, (OMG), he's been a jogger for over 30 years and he said this kind of thing happens more often than you think! My next run is today at 6pm... I'm scared sh*tless, but I'm going. Think I'll take a different route this time though. Still don't have anything to protect myself, and that makes it even harder to grow those huevos I'm in need of. LOL |

| Weight Loss | I have a question about the burn meter. Can you help me? | Aug 06 2008 14:51 (UTC) |
5 |
Well, almost right. When you burn 419 calories during exercise you can't just add that on top of your estimated daily burn. Say you ran for an hour and burned 419 calories, if you're going to log that 419 as calories burned then you need to subtract about 90 calories from your total after you do. You see that hour of time you spent running was already accounted for in the 2200 calories displayed on your burn meter. When you say you burned 419 calories during exerciseyou're counting that same basal metabolic calorie burn again. So you actually burned about 329 calories above what you would have if you just sat on your butt for that hour. When you enter exercise into CC though it actually does this subtraction for you. :) Oh, and yes 3500 calories is one pound, no you can't view your burn meter the next day. |

cindy46runner - I convinced the bf to watch both kids (5 & 3 mo's) for 30 minutes on Mon, Wed & Fri evening so I could do the program. I suppose I could try to extend that to an hour and drive to the park (about 5 miles away), they have a long sidewalk running between the park and a country club that a lot of people use... I'll have to see what the bf says. Of course that would get me home around 7 and I'd still have dinner to make... hrm. |

dybo70 - unfortunately yes I do. We had a young mother of 2 who was spotted out jogging and later abducted from her home in the middle of the day. It happened about 6 months ago and only a few miles from our house. I do plan to leave little Yoda at home from now on. He's too scared to run again and I don't really blame him. Hopefully you're right and I won't attract as much attention without him! I may try changing up my route as you suggested, but I just keep thinking is it better to know where the danger lies or to not know if there is any danger to be concerned with, you know? |

Doglady - I'm not against pit bulls, one of our best friends is in the top 5 pit breeders in the nation! He owns "BigNBully kennels" and we've met all his top dogs and I fully agree that with a responsible owner pits should not be feared. But, it's also because of him that I know the danger a pit presents when the owner is less than responsible. I'm not generally afraid of dogs, up until yesterday my greatest fear was the wild boars and gaters I might encounter in the .5 mile undeveloped area of my run. But this dog was viscious! I was genuinely frightened (so much so that I couldn't even move as he advanced on us) and when the owner came running into the road screaming it confirmed that my fears were spot on.

Brandy-
Welcome :) To answer your question, it's safe to start trying to lose weight after the 8 week mark. You won't want to drop your calories too low until your milk supply is well established. I dropped my cals to 1700 at 12 weeks PP and my milk suffered. Now I eat between 1800 & 2000, my milk is fine and I'm still losing. (My estimated daily burn with the breastfeeding is about 2500 just to give you an idea). Anyway, hope I helped! |
