My knees are quite similar. However, I've found that I've started to experience slight pains after a long workout with lunges and the like. I feel like though if it doesn't hurt, there's no point in stopping unless the sound is too weird. Just be careful and go slowly on anything involving knees- if you have something wrong with your knees than going fast can risk hurting it seriously. |

| Young Calorie Counters | doesnt it annoy you when naturally thin people call themselves fat? | Jan 01 2009 20:39 (UTC) |

It does annoy me. When we weigh in at practice, and the girls in front of me are complaining about breaking 118, I'm sitting in the back fretting about how close I could make it to lightweight (130-spring, 135-fall). And then I realise that these girls also have self esteem issues. I mean, name one person that you know that has no insecurities about their body.Impossible, right? And although I think it would be silly to have them go on a diet, I think that if what makes them feel better is getting it out in the open that they are self concious, then by all means, let them. I know that I've complained about my weight in front of my much larger friends, not purposfully, but I regret it and hope that they weren't insulted. Stupid media. |

Don't try to do one of the calorie restricting diets. If your problem is eating too much- going over the top like that will only cause to relapse. My recommendation is to start slowly. Go for walks or jogs- if you can get an hour of walking or hogging in a day, then you will immediately start losing some weight. With eating, set a new milestone for each week. For example: Week one- don't take any second helpings. Week two- don't drink any soda. Week three- don't eat that snack that you always have before lunch... etc, etc... If you try and concentrate on one thing each week, you will slowly start to build habits, and find a way to change your eating habits- not just for the next few months, but for the rest of your life. Good luck with this! I know that it will be hard, but we'll all be here with you for it! |

I've found that working out on my period has consistantly lightened the flow. I used to have week long periods, but after becoming much more active, they've shortened to around three days! Also, I've been getting less cramps and bloating. I don't know wether its the food I've been eating, or the workouts, but clearly, it's a positive thing! I really enjoy running and rowing on my period- things like abs and lifting just make my cramps worse. |

Shoot. I just got my period yesterday, and have to weigh in at a race on saturday. Is the weight gain normally before the period? will it go down by saturday? (My periods have been 3 or 4 days in length recently.) I am just a little bit over what I need to be by saturday morning, and by using my little tricks I could make it easily- but with my period I'm nervous... |

It doesn't hurt to do them every day- we do them before crew practice as a team. You are really sore after the first week, but then you can feel them getting stronger. I would either do them every day or two-three times a week. Don't alternate between the two- it will make you more sore than is necessary. |

| Weight Loss | 4 pounds in 9 days - possible??? | Oct 08 2008 01:52 (UTC) |

I have to weigh in at crew races- so here are my tricks. Drink a TON of water in the next couple of days. It will flush your system, and make sure you pee it all out before the weigh in. No salty foods. Salt retains water. You don't want water. If you are weighing in in the morning, chances are your weight will be less (for example, I weigh 137 in the afternoon, but I can weigh in for races at 135 in the morning with no problem). Also, most scales aren't great. So if you lean back on your heels, you'll drop a pound or two instantly. However, make sure that you're controlled- if you lurch forward you'll GAIN a pound or two. If you have a specific uniform for weigh in, don't wear underwear or anything else underneath it. Good luck! I'm not sure if these little tricks will work for you, but they've worked for me! |

I dunno- try to stay away from the foods. I just go up to my third floor, and usually my laziness will keep me away from going downstairs to eat. Either that, or just get some ice water. I love to munch on ice, and it makes me forget that I wanted to snack. :D |

I'm a 34D. It's so tough to find decent bras ANYWHERE. Especially since I don't want to pay top dollar for them. Most stores I go to, I search the entire store and find one or two, really ugly, 34D bras. If you want plain but supportive bras, I've found them at places like Boscovs or Kohls. I really want some cute ones though. |

I'm not an expert but I think that the easiest way to slim down is doing something aerobic, like swimming or running. I like running- you can do it around your house, it doesn't require any equipment (except shoes- but you have them) and you can explore places in your neighborhood. Swimming is a lot of fun, if you have access to a pool. Plus you can't feel yourself sweat! Also try to mix up the exercise routine. Do an upper body circuit one day, and an aerobic circuit the next. Look up some new exercises. Try some yoga poses (I like the sun salutation). Play with a pet. Start a pick up tackle mud frisbee game. Good luck! Lol, I have the same concerns! |

Find a good place to run in your neighborhood- if it's safe. There's a park by my house with lots of hills, and I love to run there. I also love to run around the neighborhood- it gives me a better sense of direction that I can use when I drive! I do my circuits in my room- same with my tiny amount of yoga. I'm planning on doing a ten minute circuit in my room and then shower every morning before school. |

| Young Calorie Counters | How do you handle friends? | Aug 19 2008 03:41 (UTC) |

Thanks for all the suggestions. I've started to invite friends over to my house more often, where I can control portion sizes and activities and such. I've also instead of just talking in front of the television, I take them outside and walk as we gossip. That way I feel better instead of jsut lazing away the whole day.
elovinus- I completely understand where you're coming from on the friends berating you for dieting. And it's weird too- when most of my friends know that I'm trying to make lightweight. They just don't get it- and unlike you, I have no self control, so I cave in and eat the gross stuff. |

I'm in school- and I do make sure that I'm not the biggest girl in the class (I'm not that big, just slightly over the healthy weight). I love going swimming with my bigger friends because they always berate me for not owning a bikkini or something, whereas with my smaller friends, I feel incredibly huge in my one piece. |

| Young Calorie Counters | EXPOSE your body | Aug 18 2008 04:27 (UTC) |
|
To be honest- I'm 15 years old, and I'm not losing weight for myself. I'm losing it for my sports team, where almost every single girl on the team is lightweight (under 130 lbs) and most are a good 5-6 inches taller than me. I understand that youth should not be spent counting calories, or losing those extra pounds. However, weight is constantly brought into focus by most adults. For example, my crew coach last year would weigh all of the girls in front of everyone else, and then spend a good forty minutes weekly telling us about our BMIs and what we should/shouldn't be eating, who has to lose 5 lbs in a week, who willl never make lightweight, etc... Even school teachers make comments about teenage girls's weight. It's incredibly uncomfortable to hear a 40 something overweight teacher talking to the smallest girls like their size is something to be incredibly proud of. It's the culture that the teenage girl lives up in. Where going shopping- most stores don't have anything above a size 6 in stock. Where I cannot find shirts that fit my chest because they are built for the pre pubescant body. Where I can't find jeans that fit because I have muscular thighs. I want to lose the extra weight so that when I weigh in in front of the other girls, I'm not embarassed. I want to lose weight so that I don't feel uncomfortable when the subject comes up (which it does- often). I want to lose weight so that I can live healthily. I'm not doing it for wahboard abs, for the perfect model's body- I am happy with the body I have, and I just want to tone it down to meet the needs of my team. Girls all over are made to feel uncomfortable by the clothes and pressures of our age. So I don't think that it is unreasonable for anyone to be concerned about their weight at a young age. Naturally I don't want anyone to go overboard, but the rest are making an important lifestyle choice- where they eat right, exercise, and eliminate the need to change later on in life. |

I have to do this too for lightweight rowing! Normally what people do to lose the extra 2-3 pounds is not wear undies/socks/anything but unisuit, go for sweat runs, not eat anything the day of weigh in, and drink a lot the day before and pee it all out on weigh in day. Obviously none of this is healthy, but that's what being lightweight is all about! |

Believe me, I've done it too. The easiest things to eat aren't always the best. I always go with a bagel with cream cheese when I'm running late- not the best of breakfasts Grab an apple instead of the chips for a snack? It's just as easy, just as satisfying, and a million times better. Prepare meals ahead of time so that you can just quickly eat and go? Maybe get those quick prepare meals that you can pop out of the freezer and microwave. Some of those are nice and low-cal, and it would be awesome to just stock up on them for times when you can't cook and are busy and stressed. Good luck! |

Hah, I completely blew it. Two hot dogs and a salad for dinner- bad, but not too bad, and then two brownies, way more than I want to count of those little marshmellows covered in gram cracker and chocolate chips, and to polish it off, chocolate chip pancakes in the morning. I don't really feel bad about the food. I just kind of feel sick.
I'll get back on track very soon. |

| I'm 15 and I don't think that it should be all about losing weight. I try to incorporate it into my daily activities, like walking with friends, walking the dog, etc...
It's actually my coaches for my crew team that have made me want to lose weight the most. Our one coach constantly weighs all of the girls in once a week-in front of everyone- and constantly talks about our BMIs and such. I know it's important, but I still don't like it- we're teenagers, we should be having fun, not being ashamed of what we weigh. |

Hi- Could I join in on this thread? My name is Juls, I'm 15 years old, and my goal weight is 124. I'm starting at 142 pounds. My goal is to make it into the lightweight boat at crew- which means that my short term goal is to be under or near 135 by the end of the summer. I'd love to be a part of this-I'm 5'3'' and it would be really great for me to have a structured place to log my (hopeful) weight loss. |
