Yet another week has gone by already! I ran a lot including the half marathon which I finished in 2:17 (about what I expected). Down 2 lbs to 187.0 for this week. Only 4.0 pounds left on my 30. Good job sexycoolaries and niccimax and everybody else, hope this week was good for you! |

Being more active is what it's all about, plus jogging burns a ton of calories. A couple years ago when I started my weight loss I shuffled along at 17:00 per mile. A year ago I was down to "only" 13:00 per mile, and now on a 5 mile run I'm at about 10:00 per mile (probably more like 10:30 for the half marathon). Not very impressive athletically but I never thought I'd run a ten minute mile! Good work being down a pound and keep it up for next week! |

Good morning all! Steady is the word for me this week, down another 1.5 pounds to 189.0. I'm running a half marathon this weekend, but I'm not "racing" exactly.... I just signed up as motivation to get me out there running to get ready for it. I think it'll be okay if not exactly fast. sexycoolaries, i hope you're having better luck, it sure seems that you are doing everything right!

Greetings to the new members, and I hope everybody is doing well. I missed two runs this week due to motivation problems but otherwise everything was pretty normal and I'm down 1.5 pounds from last week to 190.5. It's getting harder to get up at 5:30 to exercise now that it's pitch dark out. Keep up the hard work for next week! |

Wow, looks to me like you're doing everything perfect and should be losing steadily. Maybe post a separate thread to ask the experts for advice?

I'm sure you can get back on track! Have you been eating more or exercising less (and thus you need some motivation) or are you baffled about why your loss has slowed down? Let us know about your eating and exercising.

Hi all, sorry for skipping reports the last couple of weeks. I was traveling and then last week I forgot. As I expected, an extended business trip got in the way of my progress but I'm back to my usual routine now. Current weight is 196, down one pound from my last check-in three weeks ago. 17 pounds lost, 13 to go! |

Hey, I'm also currently 197 lbs with a goal of 183 (6'2" tall). I might continue past that, we'll see. 44 years old presently. My weight drifted up slowly over the years until a couple years ago I weighed myself and discovered I weighed 255 lbs, which struck me as rather Homer-Simpson-like. So I started counting calories and walking that summer. Lost 30 lbs then gained 10 back over the winter. Last year I decided to try jogging while calorie counting again and lost 30 lbs again (down to 205). I even did a half marathon last October. I didn't walk any of it but I am still a very slow runner (13.1 miles at 12:48 per mile!). In a way I didn't really care since I have never been athletic in my entire life. Now, though, I'm feeling my mortality and whatever youth I had slipping away and I think it would be good to be "above average" in fitness and general health. It feels like I'm aging backwards now! This season I started out at 213 and I set a goal of 183 which I vaguely remember weighing in high school. I also wore 32 pants and I'd like to get back down to that size. I can squeeze into a 34 now which is pretty cool. I'm training for the half marathon again and am even starting to "push it" a little bit in an effort to get faster. I probably won't ever be a real athlete but I think I can get under 10 minute miles. I don't think I'll make it that far this year but you never know. I'm also lifting weights now a couple times a week in an effort to maintain what little muscle I have. I'm aiming to lose about a pound and a half a week or so for now -- I'd like to hit 183 by october or so; more importantly I'm trying to make changes to my lifestyle that will stick for longer than just a summer of running around in pleasant weather. Good luck on your 183! I bet you'll beat me to it!

Another weigh-in. CW 197.0, down 1.0 from last week. 14 lbs to go. Next week I will be out of town on business so I will check in again in two weeks. I am hoping just to hold even during that time. Good luck to all, keep working! Edited to add: woops, I checked in a day early! No harm done I suppose. Have a successful two weeks!

| Weight Loss | the food scale: in love, but a lot of lectures! | Jul 24 2008 04:07 (UTC) |

Hmm, I'm baffled. Why would anybody object to a food scale, or give lectures about it? Tell her that food is interesting. A scale is just a tool used to help achieve fitness goals, like a pair of running shoes.

Another wednesday, another check-in! I seem to have found a routine that doesn't take too much mental energy to maintain any more (except for resisting being lazy sometimes and saying no to the occasional potential hot fudge sundaes!). Down 2.0 pounds this week to 198.0. 15 to go out of 30. I hope you are all doing well. sexycoolaries, 9000 calorie deficit for one week is huge! No way you could have not lost weight with that!

Just like putting nutrition information on items in supermarkets was a positive thing, I think this is also. It's a lot easier to take responsibility for what you eat if you have information about it. I do understand the desire to "not know" -- sometimes I wish the prices weren't on the menu either! But on the whole I think this is great. I expect the big chains will start using lower calorie ingredients and/or reducing portion sizes in NYC only, but continue as they were in places where they don't have to reveal the calories. So people in oklahoma with internet connections can check the wrong values. Not sure it will help much with obesity rates, but we can hope for the best. |

Looks like you all are doing great, keep it up for next week! A steady boring week for me, which is just fine! CW 200.0, down 1.5 from last week. I got in my exercise, counted my calories, and ate my veggies.

| Fitness | Running / Jogging etc in the rain... | Jul 14 2008 16:55 (UTC) |

Jogging is my primary exercise and some of my most memorable runs have been in the rain. It's great. Be careful if there is lightning though, and be especially careful about slippery ground, puddles, and mud which could lead to an injury. Take it easy. You'll get soaked but so what. The only downside is you have to let your shoes dry out. |

Chobbs: keep up the exercise, a week where you held your weight steady but worked out a lot has to be good for you! I try to make sure that I weigh or measure everything so I know the number of calories. That can be a drag sometimes and it's particularly hard for something like a casserole made for the whole family -- you have to figure the total for the whole thing and then make an honest guess at what fraction of the dish you ate. But I think the secret to portion control is just having a number for the calories in the portion you eat; knowing that it erases your workout is motivation to reduce the size. It's a lot of numbers and can be a bit tedious but you get used to it. I was reasonably good this week despite the long weekend. CW 201.5, down 1.5 from last week. I skipped one run and one trip to the gym due to laziness but still jogged 19 miles and lifted weights twice (though my weight lifting is not very efficient yet I don't think). niccimax and prosperos_daughter, great job! Keep it up for the next week everybody!

Hi all! If I might, I'll join the club. Sounds like you all are doing very well, keep up the good work! My story: A bit over 2 years ago, weighed 255 (male, 6'2" tall, 44 years old). The last two years I buckled down over the warm months and lost about 30 lbs each year, then gained 10 back during the cold months. I jog for exercise and count calories. This year, started at about 213, now at 203. Aiming for my usual 30 lb loss (though it seems harder this year) to hit 183 and then we'll see. The mirror will say when I'm done! Made some more lifestyle changes recently like eating breakfast and joining a gym for weight training so I hopefully will have some muscle left when I get down to my target weight (I am not muscular, never have been). I finally have gotten to the point where I enjoy the exercise although I am still not particularly fit (I jog pretty slowly). As further motivation I'm going to run a half marathon in October and I'm hoping to reach my weight target by then. Anyway, I'll update every Wednesday and offer encouragement to the rest of you also!

So you can log your weight -- which allows you to do the following:
- Plot your weight curve
- Analyze the trend of your weight (see under Recent in the figure above)
- Determine the projected target date (see under Overall in the figure above)
