Fitness Boxing? Aug 27 2009
16:22 (UTC)
1

I've been taking boxing classes for the past month and I love it. It's a really tough workout and I wouldn't recommend it to someone who is completely out of shape. My classes last 90 minutes and start with 30 minutes of cardio (jump rope, jogging, sprints, other crazy drills). Then we get into teams of 2 and we practice the drills the coach shows us (one has boxing gloves, the other one holds the pads, then we switch).  We probably do hundreds of push ups and sit ups throughout the class. At the end of the class we stretch. I had never done something that intense and I had never sweated that much before.

It's really important to get the right technique, so I hope your coach will help you with that. There are a lot of boxing technique videos on Youtube, I find it very useful to look at them and then practice my technique in front of a mirror.

The Lounge I have the worst neighbors in the entire world. Aug 13 2009

I have bad bad neighbours. They are the definition of white trash. They take all 3 parking spots behind our apartment building with their cars that don't seem to work, and leave auto, moto and truck parts everywhere in the backyard. They have a 4 year-old son who runs and screams in the apartment all the time (so we hear all the banging), and then the dog runs too and barks. We're not even allowed to have a dog in our building but they don't care.

The man is mean and aggressive, he looks like a fat Kid Rock. The landlord, a shy and old Vietnamese man, is afraid of him, so whenever we complain to him it doesn't change anything. We're pretty sure they're growing and dealing pot. They have the loudest friends. Whenever they have people over it seems to be a contest of who screams the loudest.

Also, we had problems with mice and we wanted everyone in the building to use poison to try to get rid of them, but they didn't want to use any. They like living with mice. We love our apartment but we'll have to move because of them. They should be sent far far away in the country where they wouldn't annoy anybody.

Maintaining maintaining/stuck at 135 May 01 2009

Same suggestion as amethystgirl! I'm down to 130 pounds (from 170) and I'd still like to lose about 5 pounds, but since I've been in a deficit for almost a year, I'll eat at maintenance for a few months before cutting calories again. Summer is coming and it's going to be easier for me to take long walks, so that plus my usual weight training and cardio might help me to lose the last 5 pounds without me noticing.

Weight Loss Should I get whey protein? Apr 12 2009

My advice is to get whey protein, because it's an easy and relatively cheap way to eat protein, depending on the brand you buy it can taste great and it's also filling. Also, if you choose chocolate or vanilla whey, it lets you eat something sweet and good for you. I recommend Optimum Nutrition whey protein, it tastes great and makes thick shakes.

Weight Loss Are you addicted to fast food ? Jan 30 2009
17:31 (UTC)

I think it's easy to say "I'm addicted to junk food" or "I'm a binge eater", because it makes it sound like a disease, something that you can't control.

You're the only one who controls what you put in your mouth, and if you're getting fat or sick because you're eating too much crap, well get some willpower and STOP doing it. Don't wait for a prescription drug that will promise you won't want junk food anymore if you take it.

I have nothing against occasional fast food, and if you don't go overboard with the calories it might not do you too much harm, but don't expect fast food calories to fuel your body the same way as healthy, whole food calories.

You should see the movie Supersize Me, and see it again.

Weight Loss 3 meals versus 5 to 6 Jan 28 2009
16:00 (UTC)

I have also been eating 5-6 times a day for the past 3 weeks and I really like it. I have more energy, I never get hungry and I find it easier to eat more protein that way. Here is how I do it:

Meal 1: around 9:30 AM, when I get to work, I have a bowl of Kashi cereal (dry or with yogurt)

Meal 2: around 11:30 AM I have a protein drink with a fruit

Meal 3: around 2 PM (bigger meal) I have tuna with mayo on celery sticks, cheese, sometimes a bowl of soup

Meal 4: around 5 PM (smaller) I usually have almonds with some veggies

Meal 5: around 8 PM (bigger) Salmon with spinach salad or broccoli, sweet potato. This is the only meal I eat with my boyfriend, so we cook something good and fresh that we both like, with the occasional glass of wine

Meal 6: around 10 (smaller) Popcorn or a protein shake

Then around midnight I go to sleep happy because I managed to eat healthy and tasty foods and not feel hungry throughout the day! :)

Motivation Gym in the AM - how do you do it? Jan 20 2009

Hi! I workout in the morning 3 times a week and I find it easier because the gym is almost empty at 7:30 AM and I have all the weights and machines for myself. It's just too packed if I go at 6 PM. Also, I realized that I have much more energy during my workday if I workout in the morning.

I make sure I have everything ready to go next to the bed, and my lunch is in a bag in the fridge.

I enjoy working out but it's still not natural for me (i.e. I still have to kick myself in the butt to do it), so I find that if I work out in the morning, I don't have to think about it anymore during the day, I don't obsess over it, I don't try to make excuses not to go.

Sometimes though if it's too dark or if I know it's -30 outside, I just stay in bed. :)

I would also suggest doing the New Rules of Lifting for Women program, which is great for beginner weight lifters. It gives you 7 different workouts that you do in stages for about 6 months, based on 3 workouts per week. I'm beginning stage 4 today and I'm so much stronger than when I started the program, in October. Make sure you eat plenty of protein, too.

Fitness Whey Protein side effects? Nov 05 2008

I use this same brand and I never had any kind of negative effect. It's also the best-tasting whey protein I've ever had.

I know that it's harder for me to drink a protein shake in the morning on an empty stomach, so the first few weeks I only had a shake in the afternoon or in the evening, and I used more milk than they recommend on the package.

I hope you'll be fine.

Fitness Interval Training? Oct 31 2008

It's funny, I'm exactly at the same stage as you cellar, with 6 workouts left in stage 1, and I started adding interval training because the scale wasn't moving. I do feel way stronger than when I first started though, and I can really see the difference in my arms and legs. Hopefully the interval training will make the scale move now.

I bought a 2-pound jar of ON 100% Whey Protein in natural vanilla yesterday and I love it! I was short on calories last night so I had 2 shakes! :) I would highly recommend it because it tastes natural, has no after-taste, doesn't taste chalky and dissolves easily. I will definitely use it in recipes.

Before I had Weider whey protein in vanilla and it was disgusting. I think they only sell this brand in Canada, but in any case don't buy it. I couldn't even drink it in the morning and I had to find all kinds of ways to mask the taste.

Some stores like GNC let you return the product if you don't like the taste, so you won't be stuck with some product you paid $50 and don't use.

Good luck! :)

Weight Loss Staying Committed?! Help! Oct 06 2008
17:19 (UTC)
8

I know how hard it is to stay commited to a diet. That's why I think it's important to view your new healthy diet as a permanent thing and change your habits gradually. For example, I used to eat a muffin every morning at work, but I've switched to oatmeal and fruits. It's hard the first 1-2 weeks, but after you're used to the change and you don't think twice about it anymore. I do the same thing with exercice. I go to the gym 3 times per week. I pack my bag, bring it to work, and I just go. I don't even think about not going, because I know how miserable I was a few months ago with 30 extra pounds.

Don't be too hard on yourself if you miss a workout or eat fast food, but most of the time, make the right decision for your health. And you'll see results soon enough. Good luck! :)

Motivation "Off" Weekend Aug 18 2008

I took my first "off weekend" in 2 months this weekend. I went camping with my boyfriend and since we go only one a year and that camping for me involves eating grilled meat, marshmallows and chips, and drinking wine, that's exactly what I did. And it was FUN!

I feel bloated today, but it will eventually go away, and I'm back to my normal 1,300 calories-a-day eating plan and exercise routine. I don't even feel bad, because I ate like I used to eat almost everyday just a couple of months ago. It just makes me realize how good I am at eating right and exercising these days. :) So don't feel too guilty.

Foods Sweets, Help! Aug 13 2008

When I first started CC, 2 months ago, I would allow myself to eat 2 regular butterscotch hard candies after dinner every day.

Then I bought no sugar added strawberry cream hard candies and I had them whenever I craved sugar. I also bought no sugar added prepared puddings and ice cream. But I realized these things gave me bad stomach aches and diahrrea, so now I make sure I don't eat too much, even though they're low in calories. I would rather eat a 100-calorie pudding and feel good than a 60-calorie pudding and feel all weird.

I don't crave sugar that much anymore, and I was really addicted to it before. I used to have a pack of sour gummy bears almost every night for dinner. If I got rid of this addiction, so can you! :)

I started the program last Thursday and I did the workout for 25 minutes instead of 20. I was so sore Friday, still a bit sore Saturday. I did the 2nd workout last night and it went well again, better than the first time. But some stupid kids in a car screamed at me when they drove by, saying "I'm going to puke on you!"  haha

I've always admired runners and I always thought I couldn't run, since I have had a lung condition since I was a kid. But now I can do it a bit, and in 8 weeks I'll do it even more! :)
