Health & Support DAY 1 without smoking Jan 28 2009

Well, Today is my second day of not smoking and I am trying my hardest to push through my cravings! I am definately going to be keeping up on this thread! The eating carrot sticks seems like a good idea.

I'm 24 and tried my first cigarette when I was 6, started smoking on a regular basis when I was 8, and have quit on and off ever since! I have had 2 children and with each I quit smoking while pregnant, and a few other times I have quit as well. Every time has always been cold turkey (as now) and I hate those smoking aide things they make me feel either nauseated or just taste (to me) worse then a cigarette.

So Here is what I have been doing and plan on until my craving completely pass:

SUNFLOWER SEEDS- helps a great deal, cons of it though are they make your tounge numb and mouth sore after constant eating, and the sodium in take can't be that great for you granted it has to be better then smoking itself!

BUBBLE GUM- Not only the chewing but the inhale/exhale of blowing the bubble actually helps me in the feeling that smoking gives me from that same inhale/exhale.

CUTTING THE CAFFEINE: For me my morning (and lasting well into afternoon) coffee has always been my favorite partner to my smoking, so for me cutting down from a pot & sometimes even two pots of coffee a day down to 2 cups a day is helping.

SUPPORT FROM FAMILY & FRIENDS: My husband is also a smoker and today will be his first day without smoking so he is trying his best so we can be supportive of each other. Also don't think of this as being "a walk of shame" but a walk to being healthier that should be made with your head held high no matter how silly all that chewing and gnashing at the gum & candy may make us look!

SO WE CAN DO THIS!!!! We are on a road to a healthier lifestyle and a life that we can live longer and enjoy to the fullest!Laughing

Health & Support Except for pregnant women, why do people say they "crave" a food when they really just want the taste of it? Jul 24 2008

I think craving are for the most part all mental. Like most people said it is something they just want and then it burden's the mind until you get that thing. Also as turtle baby says she will eat that thing and the craving will not be gone, this I think proves that it's not really something your body needs but something your mind believes your body needs. If your mind is still burdened with the craving it will not go away, which encourages the overindulgence that some people experience, such as eating 2 entire bags of peas.

When I 'crave' it's usually always the same things.... Hot Dogs/corn dogs, (and not some you just buy in the package) Funnel cake, popcorn, and those huge dill pickles. You may have guessed... it's all carnival food!  When I get cravings  I can literally smell the fair! I smell the cotton candy and the funnel cake, the lights an sounds come to my mind I can close my eyes and see myself at the state fair. I really just start intense cravings of fair vendors delicious treats.  OMG, It's Happening!!! LOL

It's definitely all MENTAL!Tongue out

I do often take my children to the swimming pool at the gym but being that they are so young I don't get much real aerobics out of it.

Also If the pool doesn't get evacuated from a lightning storm we get to stay!

I don't think you understand the weather here in AZ.  I will most certainly worry about getting caught in a down pour, not to mention that playground equptment in a storm is like standing there with a metal rod saying look at me I'm just waiting for a little jolt! lol.  I do often take my children to the swimming pool at the gym but being that they are so young I don't get much real aerobics out of it. Some days I can go without them and I swim laps. I have a bathing suit I feel comfortable in, just some guys shorts and a suit top. I will try to invest in a food scale but my budget is rather tight. Anyhow, My kids are not the reason I can't make it to the gym it's the lack of motivation that's my problem. I thought that's what this forum topic was about, did I post in the wrong area?

I don't have a food scale so I have to try and convert everything from ounces, cups, tbs., etc. so it really is time consuming! I definitely have to keep up with the kids and we try and get out as much as possible. We live in AZ so we could get caught in a down pour at anytime during this season, so it's harder to go to the park and what not.  What does 2 oz. of meat/cheese look like? How do you estimate without a scale? I really do want to get back on track!

I think that if you post a forum you are asking for opinions weather they be what you want to hear or not you are inviting anyone to respond. You should know that some people aren't going to agree with you and be prepared to take the criticism.

If you feel you are sensitive or the material is sensitive why not ask a close friend or family member instead of posting on a forum.

Weight Loss Who blew thier diet for the 4th? Jul 11 2008

Wow, I'm glad I'm not the only one who 'fell off the wagon' for the 4th!

I was in the kitchen preparing everything for the hubby to grill so while I was in there the chip bowl on the bar was constantly staring at me with longing eyes, of course I gave in to it's needs! God knows how many chips I ate.

Then I ate an entire skewer of grilled veggies not so bad right? Okat then I had a burger with everything on it....butter flavored cooking spray on the 200 calorie bun, lol, American cheese -ouch!, lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion, ketchup -yikes!, and mustard. That was just the burger, I also have a polish sausage, god those things are heart stoppers, but they taste so damn good. Anyhow, I skipped the bun on that one. I also had corn on the cob with light country crock and salt and pepper. Then I had the dessert...'star spangled short cake' fresh strawberries and blueberries (emacerated in sugar of course)  with whip cream and sprinkles, at least I skipped on the cake that went under the berries!

And Oh YES, The Alcohol..... single barrel Jack Daniel's wiskey with...yup you guessed it Coca-cola. About four 'drink' glasses full, about half and half of each.  I think I may have also had a glass of 360 vodka with tonic water?

I think I also may have snacked a bit, at oh let's say 2:30 am?

LOG?....What Log?

Right back to the Gym on the 5th, hangover and all!Sealed

Weight Loss Kinda long, but need some advice (or just rant with me) please Jul 10 2008

Okay here's my take on this situation......

(And so far you have gotten some great advice so this may even seem redundant but here goes)

Being that you have small children you can't deprive them of their daily snacks and treats that may be off limits to you, so be sure to keep snacks that are in you daily calorie intake(air popped popcorn with butter flavored cooking spray, fresh fruit, ricecakes) in the pantry. Rereading this it sound bad so let me emphasize,  I'm not saying give your kids chips, cookies and candy for snacks but their snacks tend to be higher in calories (cheese crackers, peanut butter, nuts and fruit etc.) If you've ever tried to eat a 1/4 cup dried fruit pieces for your daily snack I'm sure you found yourself searching in the cupboard right afterward, or at least I have.

Try and look for lowfat ways to spice up that chicken breast, there are marinades out there that are low in calories. Have you looked around at what the locals use as spices(I don't know much about the Bahamas, except it's general location on the globe) but maybe there is something out there that you haven't tried yet. You can also just keep trying healthy meals until you find some that your family likes. There are plenty of websites that offer the recipes. Don't forget to add in at least 30 min. a day of exercise, that will help you burn off those calories that you do intake. I also keep my calories down in the day so that by the time dinner rolls around I have plenty of 'room' in my 1200 calorie diet to eat with the family, granted I still measure out my portions to stay within the limit.

Now, about the support system (or lack there of) that your man is providing you, that is a little deeper problem then just him agreeing to eat healthy with you and keep you motivated. That's what we are here for!  You really need to have a sit down with him and talk about what you need out of your relationship and how you need him to respect your feelings, plus tell him if he supports you it will only lead to a better life and a future wife with a bombshell of a body! From your picture it looks like you already have great legs!

Anyhow, really tell him how you feel and what you need from him, if he understands great, if not try a few more times and then reconsider the marriage, because you can't spend the rest of your life with someone who doesn't respect your feelings and goals. Keep trying!

New Members Woman, late 20's, about 100 pounds to lose. Looking for buddies who can relate! Jul 08 2008

As I am reading these posts I find we are all, for the most part, in the same boat which I think is good because we can all relate to each other. I would definitely like to be a part of a support system because I know I really need it. I am 23 and I am at 220-225 lbs and am only 5'2", so I have about 100 lbs to loose but right now I'm just aiming for 80 to feel comfortable again.

It's pretty hard because my three year old boy is under weight and they have him on 2% milk and higher fat content foods, which are just sitting there in the pantry staring at me when I am hungry. Also my husband is a very picky eater and is mainly a red meat and potatoes kind of guy, he's a little heavier then he wants but still in reasonable condition, since he's in the Army and participates in PT every day. He's been a great motivation in helping me at the gym, but making family meals is harder than I thought. I have to bring the measuring cups and spoons to the dinner table with me!

I have a feeling this post could get really long, so I'll just end by saying, I'd love to have the support from other ladies like me and knowing what y'all are trying out and share what I'm trying too! So let's support and share the up's and downs, because you know there will be, but for once I'm hoping there will be more downs!Laughing lol
