Motivation Small changes lead to Big rewards... Dec 27 2008

I've been making little changes every day for the last 8 months.  And though my progress on the scale has been slow, I know these changes are genuine.  I feel better -- more energy, clearer skin, less headaches, and I'm sleeping better.

I stopped drinking caffeine after 11AM, and I changed from sugar and cream to black.  Most days, I only have one large cup of black coffee.  I enjoy it more than ever.  (150 calories)

I increased my physical activity from sedentary to light.  I take a 45 minute + walk every day.  (200+calories burned)

I've increased my fiber to 20-25 grams a day.  I always eat 3 to 5 fruits and vegetables a day.  Usually more.  I've decreased my sodium intake to less than 2400 mg/day.

I drink 1.5+ liters of water a day.

I'm drinking a glass of red tonight.  It's my major indulgence for the week.  Loooove a dry red wine.

But.  I must agree with GIJane... you aren't drinking 1/2 your calories every day are you?  Eventually, that will ruin your body.

So enjoy!  But remember, everything in moderation.

Cheers!

Thanks gi-jane.  I've been struggling with lowering my daily fat intake, but it's been difficult (I live in Korea and don't have as many options as I'm used to, and I take a fish oil supplement which is packed with fat).  I'll try making my breakfast more calorie dense (I added a boiled egg and a 1/2 cup of OJ today).  Alcohol is a tough one, because I've gotten into the habit of having a large glass of wine or a bloody mary (yum!) three or four times a week, but a few weeks without any alcohol would probably be good for me.  I think I'll increase my vegetables and have oatmeal more than twice a week.  It's difficult to find good carbohydrate choices here (the only rice is white glutinous) and all dairy products are made with whole milk.  As to adding more water, I already pee every 30 minutes... so I think I'll stick with my 2 liters.  It's good to have an outside opinion and to admit there are still lots of things I can do to better my diet.  Oh -- as to eating too few calories, I don't feel deprived.  I'm afraid my metabolism is already a disaster.  I've suffered from a variety of EDs and most recently was put on a plethora of pills (antidepressants and anti-psychotics), but got off of them earlier this year because I hated the way they made me feel and I was gaining 20 pounds a month.  I've decided to use diet and exercise and specific vitamins/minerals as my tool for deal with all of my... um, issues.  I "feel" really good, but I'd like to *see* some results as well.   Thanks again!

I haven't had it for years.  Paglia's in small town Missouri.  Surely there are other pizza places that make it... but I've never come across any.

Vegetarian Aren't you happy we dont have to worry about Listeriosis? Aug 29 2008

The human being is an omnivore, as are many bears, birds, and pigs.  I'm sure you wouldn't begrudge a bird to eat a grasshopper.  Everyone has a right to make their own choices, and I totally support your right to eat whatever you want.  I do believe that factory farming is horrible to animals -- and the food that is produced through such practices is lacking in integrity and nutritional value, as well as the cause for most outbreaks of Listeriosis, MadCow, and Avian Influenza.  But if someone wants to eat a BigMac, I say have at it.  Enjoy!

  • 1.5 Liters of Water Everyday

  • Changed to skim milk in my coffee. and only use 1 tsp sugar. - Used to take it with Cream and a tbsp of sugar. I hope to be sugar free by the end of this month.

  • I eat 5 to 6 times a day.
  • I quit smoking. and I only have caffeine in the morning - 1 cup of coffee.

  • Not being discouraged by slow results. But noticing small changes. Like how I'm sleeping better. And how much more energy I have.

Thanks for the advice mladdy and allydan!  I've been paying close attention to my sodium/fat/cholesterol intake.  I've been getting A ratings the last five days.  I've considered tweaking my protein vs. carbs percentage...  but I've never been a big meat eater.  I try to have some nuts and maybe a chicken breast in my day, but that is about it.  I live in Korea, and it's really hard to find beans here. -- hmm.  I should get some tofu.  My carbs are high, but that's mostly from fruits and vegies.  Le sigh.  If I don't see a bigger weight loss after this week, I may try to switch up things a bit more.

Weighed this morning.  I've lost a total of 2.5 pounds in 3 weeks.  I'm discouraged.  I have a long, long, long, long way to go.  It will take 3 years for me to reach my goal at this rate.  I'm trying to be happy with every little loss...  but I expected to have a larger initial weight loss.  I've lowered my calorie intake to 1300 -- I started at 1800 and then went to 1500.  I'm afraid my body isn't willing to go into weight loss mode without a huge deficit.

I recently joined CC again a few weeks ago.  I've gained a ridiculous amount of weight over the last two years.  And now I am trying to regain control of my life.  I've spent the last two weeks observing my calorie intake, and now, I'm cutting down to 1500 calories (I was at 1800).  I'm trying to do this right.  Change for life.  More concerned for my health than how I look (though I still really care).  My goal is to lose 140 pounds over the next two years.  Cheers to change!
