well you're right- it's not visible to others, although it definitely is to me. i told someone the other day that i gained over ten pounds and she's just like- what??? where? lol i mean i think if i gained it over the course of a few minutes people may notice but when it happens over a few months, i guess people don't really realize |

and one more question- is there a point where your muscle looks like muscle without having to MAKE a muscle? not that im trying to get to that point, i was just wondering- i have a very low body fat percentage for a woman, and when i make a muscle with my arm or abdomen or legs, there's hardly any fat at all covering the muscle- but it still looks like fat when im not making a muscle. how is it possible that there are people who look ripped all the time if i have very little body fat, good muscles when i tense them, but just look kinda curvy when im not tensing them? |

no carb usually translates to no starches and no sugary things... like on atkins, you can't have starchy vegetables like potatoes, butternut squash, pumpkin... but you can have high-water-content vegetables like peppers, celery, broccoli, which are obviously all carbs... and you can't have fruits |

omg it is beyooond worth it! i just noticed im no longer obsessed with food!!! after being obsessed with it for soo long im not anymore!! i started dieting healthfully in 6th grade cuz i was actually chubby, then ate too little, then too much, then restricted, then binged, then restricted more, then binged more... finally, almost 7 years later, i just experienced my first meal tonight where i just ate and then was done! just like that! usually i crave sweets after a meal and eat those or just eat more regular food can't stop til im stuffed or when i can stop (when im being "good" with dieting/restricting) i just have to FORCE myself away- tonight i just knew when i was done!!! i am sooo happy and this is sooo worth not having the sugar- a life free of food obsession is better than a piece of cake (or two, or three... and believe me- if i can do it, ANYONE can |

hey just posted this under someone else's thread but it applies here too so... here's what i said: "wow this is exaaactly like me! i absolutely looooove bad carbs (cake, cookies, ice cream...) and find that i can't have just a little bit. even if i manage just to have a small treat for a few days, eventually i end up going overboard and eating way too much of them. i wanted to cut them out totally but it was way too hard because i live with my family (im 17) and other people (bros and siss) wanted them around the house. now though, my last sibling just moved out and i can make the house as healthy as i want! (my parents don't mind either way) so i got rid of all the cakes and cookies and white flour things that tempt me. todays day 2 1/2 of being free from sugar and white flour (the first day i was still getting rid of stuff and had a spoonful of sorbet, hence the "1/2") and its really an incredible feeling! its waaay easier when the stuffs not around cuz even tho i still crave sweet things, as its only been 2 1/2 days, i am satisfied with fruit and/or decaf coffee made with truvia. yesterday i went out and bought two all natural, sugar free cookies (made with fruit juice) to save for a treat at the end of the week if i make it til then with no sugar. i was a little scared that i would end up eating them before then, but i was able to overcome my cravings for them pretty easily yesterday, and today i don't even crave them anymore. so basically, cold turkey is DEFINITELY a better option for some of us. i feel much better about everything i eat and even when im very full, it feels good because i know its all fruits and veggies and healthy whole grains and lean protein (whereas with sugar, if i got full on it i'd just feel sluggish and fat- even though im at the low end of a healthy weight) good luck! its definitely worth a try" |

| Motivation | Does anybody else binge at home when others are not around, but when others are around say "No" to all junk food | Jul 06 2009 01:34 (UTC) |

YES this is soo me. my friends and family think i have soo much willpower, and only eat the healthiest food- meanwhile, when im alone i can suddenly get the urge to binge, and eat anything! but thankfully, i'm getting this under control now- a lot of the urge came from restricting i think, but after i stopped restricting i still binged for like 3 weeks straight. basically its sugar i crave tho so now i got rid of almost every bit of sugar from the house (the stuff left is stuff that doesn't tempt me). i dont restrict- i eat as much carbs and veggies as i want for breakfast, as much protein and veggies as i want for lunch, and then instead of a formal dinner i just snack on veggies, fruits, and fats (like avocado) the rest of the nite. all the fruits and veggies make u so stuffed that even if i think what the heck, im just gonna have bread/crackers/cereal later in the day (when the cravings really kick in) i just don't have the room for it in my stomach. see, with sugar it didn't really matter if i had the room cuz the taste was just so good and it seemed to not take up that much room (altho im talking cookies, cake and chocolate) but with bread and other starchy things that i crave, i can resist easily enough when im stuffed. and btw, my entire day that keeps me so full is less than the amount of calories in one of my binges (binges= about 2000 cal, current day calories (i dont count but now thinking back on my day and estimating)= 16-1800) |

| Health & Support | carbs make me TIRED | Jul 05 2009 21:18 (UTC) |

thanks for the replies safina1- i ate like... 550 calories worth i would guess. like 2 servings of the TLCs and 3 servings of the flatbreads. they were whole grain, so refined carbs doesn't really apply.. ktjo- hmm... maybe ill try adding guacamole tom. i don't wanna add protein cuz i find i feel much better when i follow the "one concentrated food type per meal" rule (i.e. no mixing carbs with protein, no mixing fruit with anything [with the exception of a small amount of constipating fruit after the meal to seal off ur stomach- small apple, half a banana...], and veggies go with anything). i know people say this makes no sense, but i tried it for a while, felt great, went off of it cuz i have such terrible sugar cravings that i didn't know what to do with myself if i couldn't eat carbs after eating protein, and even when i managed to stay off of sugar for days at a time, i still didn't feel as good as i did when i was eating one concentrated food type per meal. so now i have recently gotten rid of ALL that tempting refined sugar and also nuts (because i found that if i couldn't have sugar, i'd start eating ridiculous amounts of nuts... so until i'm over the sugar addiction, im staying away from nuts too) and im starting that way of eating again... fats like oil and avocado are allowed to be mixed with carbs so ill try doing that and see what happens |

| Health & Support | Is it okay not to have a period? | Jun 26 2009 02:35 (UTC) |
29 |
im in sorta the same situation except i never had a period ever. i am 17 (turning 18 this fall). i've been trying to improve the way i eat lately because i have been dieting ever since i was chubby when i was about 12-every time i gain a little more than what i decide is a good weight, i freak out and try to lose it by eating less. i was 5"1 1/2 and 96 lbs at my last "happy weight" but then i started to gain and i realized i shouldn't try to stop it. i started eating a lot better recently and haven't gained any more (now i'm 104 but i look like less because im mostly muscle). i'm not trying to gain- im just trying to eat good foods when hungry and make sure to get enough fat and protein and let my body get to whatever weight it needs to be healthy and yes, there are bad effects of not having a period, like osteoporosis- so be sure to take a calcium supplement if you're not getting 1000-1300 mg of calcium every single day. good luck! hope u get it soon! |

i bought mine online with a digital display- altogether (bodybugg+display+coaching session+6 month membership on website) it was $300. it basically counts how many calories you burn at all times, whether you're exercising or resting. it also tells you how many steps you've taken and how long you've been active. on the online program you can track how many calories you've consumed so that you can compare it with calories burned and make sure you keep a proper deficit. you can set activity/step/calories burned goals... lots of fun stuff. i like it. keeps me motivated. |

| Fitness | women and push ups? | Jun 18 2009 18:54 (UTC) |

thanks for the advice everyone! i think im gonna start trying those push-up variations... my karate teacher told me recently that push-ups very much involve chest muscles, an area women are often weakest- that would explain why i can do bicep curls and presses holding 20+ pounds in each hand but have so much trouble with pushups. as for the comments about endurance- i know thats the main thing, thats what im trying to build! because in other exercises my endurance is really pretty high up there- its just pushups that are the problem |

i would be totally fine with 30 pushups (i want to be fit and toned, but im not a bodybuilding-obsessor) except that in karate we sometimes have to do pushups for 1 or even 2 minutes straight, especially when testing for the next belt. this is reallly hard for me |

me too! ill work out and then get ready for a shower and then take a shower and then hang out for a bit and feel completely cool- and my face is still pink and warm! but it doesn't really matter to me so much cuz i usually work out at home or at night so i can get into the car and go home right away without anyone staring at me lol |

yuuuuppp. it depends what im doing- if its something stationary, i usually just get flushed (i.e. exercise bike) but if its something that includes a lot of moving around (i.e. karate, basketball, running...) my face is the color of a tomato after about half an hour, maybe even less. i've also gotten that "are you ok? you're really red" or "omg ur face is the same color as ur (red) shirt!" it actually makes me happy. its like my body tells me when its getting a good workout- i can judge the level of the exercise by the temperature of my face (warm/hot/burning a hole through my head!) |

| Health & Support | healthy way to break a carb addiction? | May 25 2009 06:41 (UTC) |

Thanks for the replies. I like the idea of eating often... I'd been eating every 2 1/2 hours for a while- when I first started this, I wasn't really hungry 2 1/2 hours after a meal but would eat anyways because I knew I was supposed to- then I started to be hungry when snacktime would come around, and then I began to be hungry a 1/2 hour before I wanted to have a snack. I think when I don't eat until my stomach feels empty, I tend to want to binge (especially on carbs). So now I'm gonna start eating smaller meals every 1 1/2 hours... do you think I'm just gonna start getting hungrier faster if I do this? |

I'm eating baked chicken breasts, spiced cooked eggs w/ no oil or salt, low fat cottage cheese, steamed and raw veggies, nuts, nut butter,... so yes, I guess I am eating healthfully, but I've read- and this might be totally incorrect, but it seems to have some support- that starches ARE a necessary part of a healthy diet: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/09/02/hea lth/main640566.shtml http://www.bodybuildingforyou.com/articles-su bmit/keith-klein/low-carb-diet-truth.htm  ; (these are just a couple sites I saw that made this claim) But most importantly, I must eat at least half a slice of bread one day a week and at least 1 1/2 slices one day for religious purposes (a lot more complicated than it sounds, it's not like we have a religious ritual centered around bread its just a necessary component... basically, don't ask)- so I fear that I'll start having intense cravings for carbs after a bite of bread.

| Health & Support | All my weight went to my... thighs? | May 24 2009 22:49 (UTC) |

Yup. I have a very narrow waist, thin arms, flat chest... and jiggly thighs. I use an exercise bike four times a week, take karate, and go walking- my thighs are rock hard when I make a muscle. Yet still, my inner thighs look like little sacks of fat. I decided to just accept this- almost everyone has some sort of trouble spot which will be fatter than the rest of their body unless they become so unhealthily thin that they lose even that fat. I think its pretty awesome that my trouble spots are my inner thighs cuz they're the easiest to cover up! Saddle bags will always show, beer bellies are hard to conceal, jiggly arms can't be hidden away- but just throw on a skirt and no one knows about your inner thighs! As for wearing a swimsuit, I always wear either shorts or a mini skirt with it. Problem solved! |

malnutrition?! whoa thats a big assumption dont you think? i mean, seeing as you know nothing about me except for some 15 lines about one incident that happened the other day... it just so happens that its not so strange in my family to get it late- the earliest of my sisters was 13, the latest was 15, and my mother got it at 16. im not saying that there's no other reason for it because maybe there is. but with all the effort i put into making sure i get fruits, vegetables, protein, fats, and at LEAST 1000mg of calcium, i am seriously doubting the whole malnutrition theory... just my opinion

when you eat empty calories, they don't "count more" than healthy calories- the only thing is, they don't fill you and usually don't satisfy you, and thus make you more likely to eat more. but if you can eat them and stay within your calorie limit, it makes no difference in your weight if some of your calories come from foods like that |

bananee- check a bmi calculator for ppl under age 18- according to that, 90 pounds is the lowest someone of my age and height could be and still be healthy. as for protein, i usually have a couple yogurts in the day and then for supper i have either fish, meat, or chicken |
