Fitness the everlast "one gym" Apr 08 2009

thats a good point, about spending the $130 elsewhere.

i have sets of 5, 8, 10 and 15 pound weights that i use for various things (though i've pretty much phased the 5s out...yes! small victories.)
i will definitely get a resistance band...in fact, i think one may have come with my stability ball (also have that). i just was never sure how to use it, really.

i think maybe i'm just bored in my routine. i'll look into a squat rack, though i'm not sure i have space. i don't necessarily need one to squat a heavy bar, right?

(sorry for all my n00b questions!!)

ugh, how do those magazines get away with giving advice and workout routines that won't work??

thank you for the advice--yeah, the routine in fitness magazine seemed like it'd be a little too easy to TONE UP ALL MY TROUBLE SPOTS!!! but i thought i'd give it a go with heavier weights to see what would happen.

again, i truly appreciate all the feedback :)

thanks, getlost, that actually was a part of my question, and you're right. i'm really trying to shift my focus from "i need to do this to look good" to "i need to do this to be strong and fit, and looking good is a bonus!"

floggingsully- really? so cardio isn't all that important?
as for diet, i'm an occasional pescatarian, but most of my protein comes from vegetarian sources- tofu, beans, nuts. all whole grains all the time, haha. lots of fruit and veggies. i have a bit of a sweet tooth, but i try to accomodate that by baking my own sweets (oatmeal raisin cookies with whole wheat flour, homemade granola bars) instead of processed stuff.

as for weight training, i think i am going to try one of those one-month plans from fitness magazine for a month and then see where i need to adjust.

i apologize for my ignorance on these topics. i have been reading this forum, but it seems like since everyone's goals are different, everyone has different takes on what to do, you know?

thanks again for the help, for real.

thanks everyone for sharing! i didn't even really think about the impact of squats and things--but it completely makes sense to me now: a few months ago, i was taking a fitness class that had lots of lower body work and not much ab work, and i could definitely feel my midsection getting stronger.

Weight Loss why is it...? Feb 09 2009

"you don't want to believe that 1200 isn't enough - fine.  but you asked, and we've answered."

actually, if you'd read my posts, you'd see that i was asking for advice, and that my reference to the number 1800 was in response to another poster saying i should eat 2300 calories a day.

and no, i am not "completely deluded about my body composition," i am just trying to lose my post-college spare tire.

man...i thought calorie count was supposed to be a support system. instead, you ask a question about weight loss, which is obviously a frustrating process, and get snooty attitude in return. thanks so much.

it seems to me that any time i eat more than, say, 1700-1800 calories/day, even if i'm exercising, i gain weight. i think if i ate 2300 calories/day, i'd be really heavy! i don't understand it.

also, you're telling me that i don't need to lose weight--well, how are you supposed to lose body fat without losing weight? i'd really like to get rid of this belly pooch.

sorry if this sounds argumentative, i'm just trying to figure out the best plan for me, thanks in advance.

thanks for the info.

ugh, weekends! it's just frustrating because i feel like i start the week off on a bad foot, and then spend the rest of the week trying to get back to the weight that i ended the previous week with, you know?
