| Health & Support | Fasting! Help please! | Oct 09 2008 14:06 (UTC) |

I was at temple all evening, and today I'll be at temple all day. It definitely helps take your mind off the fast when you're busy praying. Plus, it's very unlikely anyone's going to whip out a hamburger and start chowing down in front of you, because they're all fasting too. Go to services! They're fun. :) |

Yay blue team! This is my first challenge and I'm so excited. Ate terribly today because it's Rosh Hashanah (brisket, mini potatoes, cucumber salad, grilled mushrooms, challah, etc. All the jewish holiday staples, basically.) But, tomorrow is a new day! I'll be back down to 1500 cals and going to the gym instead of sitting in temple for 6 hours. Haha. Anyways, good luck to everyone! Thanks for starting this thread, star. :) |

Update: Words cannot describe how awesome my cheeseburger and fries were. Very glad I decided not to ignore that craving. :) And it's a very very good thing I don't like their milkshakes, otherwise my meal would have totaled about 1600 calories, which would just be ridiculous. About 900 for a burger and fries sounds less scary, although still not the type of stuff you want to be eating everyday. More like every few years or so. Haha. Oh, and goodchoices, I've never tried the protein burger, although I love their hidden menu grilled cheese. (yum!) Is it comparable to the beauty of the actual burger, or do you just end up feeling cheated? Rachelcrow, those fajitas sound spectacular. Especially the tequila lime salsa. Mmm. :) |

| The Lounge | Principles of Macroeconomics Help with GDP | Sep 17 2008 06:41 (UTC) |

Hm, interesting questions. Well, if you purchase a car from Germany, that's an import. Therefore, not part of consumption spending, net exports only. The money, eventually, gets filtered back into the German economy. Not the US economy. If Jet Blue purchases an airplane from France, again, the money is filtered back into the French economy. Not ours. I'm not sure about land though. My professor specified that homes that are not newly produced do not count in the GDP, so I'm assuming that refers to land as well? Not sure though. I have macro tomorrow morning, so I'll definitely ask and get back to you. :) |

| The Lounge | Starting kids early in school | Sep 16 2008 17:36 (UTC) |

I started school a year earlier than everyone else and I've always loved it. I was very proud of being a year younger than everybody and yet still able to excel in my classes. It also gave me extra motivation to prove myself and do well. ALSO, now that I'm in college and I've decided to switch majors, I don't feel bad starting over, because I was younger than everybody else anyways. I could've taken a gap year if I wanted. It just left a lot of options open for me. And the times that girls develop and start their period vary by person anyways; I ended up starting my cycle around the same time as most of my peers. That stuff is hard to predict, and therefore shouldn't really be a deciding factor. Overall, I'm sure whatever decision you make will be fine; you sound like a very loving and concerned father and that's really all a kid could ask for. :) |

Hello Okie, yeah I hate those days when I've got absolutely nothing to do. That's probably what today would have turned into if I hadn't gone to class.. I think brownie chunks may just be the solution to all the world's problems. :) |

Good news: I made it to class! (And am now back, obviously.) Also, treated myself to frozen yogurt before coming home. With brownie chunks. There's nothing like brownie chunks to take a day from really crappy to almost bearable. :) I'll probably be able to reach my calorie goal for today now! Thanks, muttlover, for your advice. I have been trying to make friends with people in my classes, but there are just so many people to sort through. I just feel like all the people I try introducing myself to are indifferent, or they do ridiculous amounts of drugs, or they're just plain stupid. I'd like to be able to find friends that I can relate to, on some level. But yes, I am trying all those things. I guess it's just going to take time to find the right people. Either that or I need to lower my friend standards.. |

Purespark- I know how you feel. Since I don't have friends I end up spending most of my time with my family. They're wonderful, but they're actually starting to get concerned about my lack of social outlets.. Icutoffmyhair- Yeah, especially difficult is that I transferred from university to community college. Definitely a lot harder to meet people when nobody lives on campus and they all drive straight home after class. :( Glad to hear the good news from both of you, though. On another note: Gloominess is starting to affect my calorie intake, but not in the way I would expect. I'm having trouble getting over 1,000 daily. So odd, so frustrating. God, I really don't want to go to class. |

Philosophy 101. It's very interesting, only 1.5 hrs long, and I like my professor a lot. The gloomy pit kind of sucks all the motivation out of you, unfortunately. I'll probably end up going.. Sorry about the lack of happy news. I hope your week picks up. |

Great, thank you! Yeah, I understand the benefits of cardio, and I could never give it up, but for the months of June and July my entire workout routine consisted of 6 days of cycling every week...and that's it. Haha. It sounds so stupid now! I've been thinking about getting the 'New Rules of Lifting..' since I've seen so many recommendations for it, but I wanted to see if I could find a good/free online equivalent first.. |

Ah yes, I remember those days well. For fun, I love looking at the calories of some of the things I used to get Starbucks. For example: a grande white chocolate mocha with whipped cream and a blueberry scone totals 850 CALORIES. An In-n-Out cheeseburger and fries? 880 CALORIES. A Chipotle burrito with rice, beans, sour cream, cheese, and steak, with chips? 1795 CALORIES. (I know people who eat these almost every day.)
It just blows my mind... |

| The Lounge | Can men and women be friends? | Sep 08 2008 23:26 (UTC) |

Hm, so if men and women can't be "real" friends due to the inevitable attraction, how does this rule translate to bisexual people? Just wondering. Are they unable to have any "real" friends, due to the fact that they are attracted to both sexes? Obviously, this is going to get us into a debate on "real" friendship. Does "real" friendship exclude any relationship that includes sexual attraction? I don't think so. I've been attracted, to various degrees, to many of my male friends. I think the added dynamic makes the relationship more interesting. Of course, there are lines and boundaries that are set throughout the course of the friendship, and you have to be careful not to go too far. Thus, the nature of human relationships. Complex and confusing and sometimes really upsetting, but without that confusion there is no excitement, no change, no growth, no life. :) |

| The Lounge | BED BUGS! Ewww! | Sep 08 2008 19:36 (UTC) |

I never had bedbugs, but I did get scabies when I was at school last year. Not as hard to get rid of, but very very uncomfortable. When you have them, you can see the actual scabie bugs under your skin and the "track marks" from where they move. SO glad to be rid of them. Just take a deep breath, relax, and try to live your life until they go away. That's what I did, and now they're just a funny memory. :)
Edit: Thought your post said you were in school. Oops. :) |

| Vegetarian | Unsupportive Family: Help? | Aug 30 2008 06:19 (UTC) |

Well, I took everybody's advice and told my parents. Dad's response? "Why can't you just make things easier on us for once?" Better than expected, I guess. I think the main problem is that in their heads vegetarianism=left wing liberalism=flag burning and pot smoking and orgies. They're conservative republicans and tend to jump to funny conclusions, especially now that I've registered as a Democrat. They refuse to buy any special groceries to accommodate, though, so I'm going to have to do more of my own grocery shopping from now on. (Don't get me wrong, I love grocery shopping, but my paycheck is teeeeny tiny. Definitely going to have to sacrifice all non-essential items. Haha.) Thanks for your advice, everyone. I do feel a lot better now, not having to hide from my family. Hopefully they'll become more open to my vegetarianism over time. |

I get the regular Better n Peanut Butter from Trader Joe's and I absolutely adore it. It definitely does not taste like regular peanut butter, but I've come to like it even more than the regular kind. I had the same questions as you when I first tried it, so I looked up their website (literally betternpeanutbutter.com) where they list the nutrition facts. I thought it would be interesting to compare it to regular peanut butter, Jif Creamy to be precise. The only thing that 'Better' seems to have sacrificed is the protein (4g instead of 8g.) Seems like a reasonable trade-off for 90 less calories and 13.5 less grams of fat. Also, all the ingredients listed on the website seem harmless. I'm not an expert on what constitutes a "processed" food, but the ingredients listed are all words I recognize, which I'm guessing is a good sign. :) |

Funny: I had the same experience yesterday! I'd been so good for so long, and so I decided to not count my calories for the entire day, and I absolutely hated it as well. I couldn't even bring myself to dig in to chips or cookies or anything, because they just sound disgusting now. Why would I want to put something like that into my body when I could eat a granola bar or a small fruit smoothie or some egg whites or a little salad? I ended up counting calories in my head all day anyways. Haha. No more cheat days. A healthy lifestyle is so much more satisfying. |

Well everyone, I ended up taking a very direct route to solving my problem: I dropped a class. Haha. It wasn't JUST because I wanted to use that early morning time to exercise (it was a crappy overcrowded class with a bad teacher, among other things), but it definitely did factor into it. Now my schedule is perfect! I have a class at 7:30, after which I go to the gym, shower, have some lunch at home, and then drive back for my afternoon class. Granted, parking is absolutely ATROCIOUS at that time in the afternoon, I have to factor in an extra hour for me to circle around the parking lot/various parking structures. But it's definitely worth it now that I can get my exercise in in the mornings. :) |

I'm participating in this summer weight loss contest at my gym, and so I was forced to weigh in yesterday. No poundage lost in the last month, BUT my body fat went down 3% and I lost an inch around my waist! It was a nice little victory, and I'm so glad I didn't let the stupid number on the scale ruin it for me. Won't be weighing myself again until Sept. 15th. :) |
