  1. Make sure that each and every person who is coming into contact with you child is certified through the state/county to be a child care provider and is currently certified in first aid, INFANT and CHILD CPR and knows where the closest hospital/fire department/police station is
  2. Make sure that every person who works there has a criminal background check available for the parents to see. If it is an inhome day care then make sure that everyone, including the spouse/roomie/children of the provider has a BG check and they aren't on a sexual offender list.
  3. See if there are video cameras in the rooms, and inspect the rooms yourself. If anyone gives you any grief over it, then that isn't the place for your child.
  4. The child- provider ratio should be stated in the contract, and ask what there procedures are if they go over the ratio.
  5. If they are a nationally accredited child care center/provider they will be more expensive, but they will be the best trained providers.
  6. When you do choose the provider/center you want to use, drop by unannounced and just observe your child in the environment. It may be the best center that money can pay for, but your child might HATE IT!
  7. Find out what day's they are closed, and if they will comp you for those days. Also, if they are closed and you need child care see if they have a list of recommended back up providers. It's always a good idea to have one or two back up providers lined up, just in case.
  8. Find out what there policies are on fighting/hiting/biting.  Kids are going to get bumps, scratches and smacks in daycare. There is no way around it. Its either self inflicted or the poor darlings get a smack over a toy or something like that. ( I saw my 14 month old son straight push a little boy down and take his toy. I was shocked, but also laughing at the same time because little guy tripped over his own feet and bopped his chin on the very toy he took!)

Thankfully I use the Child Development Center on base, and Ethan LOVES going to "cool" (school). Kids will pick up on the parent's "vibe" so if you approach this with excitement your child probably will too.

They have these little slings that you can wear and breastfeed the little one at the same time. I always made sure I had a towle or blanket or something to cover up. I couldn't put it over my child because he HATED to have stuff over his face while he was BF. So, I would just wrap it around and have a little bit covering what wasn't hid by baby's head.

Dude, I  CAN NOT sleep with my little guy and my hubby in the same bed! The last time we tried to have Ethan in the bed with us I got kicked in the throat, in the boob and smacked straight in the eye by my sweet little booger! He was sweet and gentle when daddy was holding him, but then daddy rolled over and went "nigh-nigh" and then Ethan saw "Mama" and wanted to play. He lasted about 5 minutes and then I plopped him back in his own bed! Cuddling on Saturday/Sunday mornings is just about as much as my poor throat/boobs/eyes can handle!

If you want calcium in your diet, try TUMs. They have roughly 40-60% of your calcium requirments per serving.

Breast milk production problems can be attributed to your VERY low cal intake. Most doctors and diet gurus will tell you to eat about 1200 cals a day for normal people. Breastfeeding mothers should get any where from 1800-2200 cal a day for milk production. If you eat less then this amount for more than a couple of days then your bod goes into starvation mode and will hang on to every calorie it can, and very soon after that you won't be able to produce any milk at all.

I breast fed my boy for about 10-11 months. When I was cleared by my doc to start exercising and dieting, he told me to consume about 1700 cals a day. I didn't drastically increase my exercise and I was able to shed about 40lbs of the 60lbs that I gained with my son in the first 13 months.

Yeah, just over cook a portion of what you are going to eat, add a dash of salt  or herbs to it and put it in the blender/food processor. That way you can control the "chunkiness" of the food.

At about 11 months my son was able to eat soft/overcooked unblended bites of what we ate at the table. It if was super spicy or salty I would make him about 1/2 cup of mild food. Now he just eats smaller portions of whatever we have. He has molars, so it doesn't have to be too squishy. I haven't done nuts or really hard food yet thought. He only has one molar on top and one molar on the bottom on both sides, so he can't grind very effectively yet.

He started drinking from a cup about 3 weeks ago, and can now walk and drink at the same time! (I only give him water unless he's sitting down in his booster seat. Less mess that way.)

Weight Loss >>>>> How Should I Strip Myself ??? **URGENT** Jun 30 2009

Original Post by sooji:

of FAT that is !!!!! Cool

I've gained the notorious Freshmen 15 and now im working out with a personal trainer.

She has told me before we started that we were going to focus on fat burning exercises, other than just lifting weights like I used to do - along with cardio.

I have only worked out  with her once so far && this is what we did:

  • Instead of dealing with heavier weights (10 kgs, like i used to), she made me use really light ones (less than 5 kgs, i think) but more reps than 10-12. Like..... 15-20.
  • After finishing 2 exercises, she made me run 300 meters on the treadmill immediately. I was running 11 kph (i think it was kilometers), which is like... almost 7 mph. I was really running lol!! But it lasted like... 3 mins.

This was one set.

After I finished running, she gave me 2 mins rest and then made me do 2 other exercises, then running again.

We did a total of 5 sets of these.

Was the purpose of this keeping my heart rate up??

My ultimate question is...

Do you think this is better for losing weight than just simply lifting REAL weights and cardio??

I mean, i understand that right now, my goal is to burn the FAT, not BUILD MUSCLE. But I don't want to lose too much of my muscles and look thinner but flabbier....

HELPPPPPP!!

First baby I went from 119lbs - 156lbs. Baby was 9lbs 6 oz, born on 14 april 2002. Took me about 11 months to get down to 135. I bounced up and down between 125-135 for the next couple of years.

Second baby went from 129 - 187lbs. Baby was 10lbs. 3.3 oz, born on 2 Feb 2008. I didn't have gestational diabetes or anything like that, I just grow babies REALLY big.

I was down to 133 on his 1st birthday, but then I got really sick and I couldn't work out for 2 months. I was 149lbs on the first of May, the day I was allowed to workout again. Right now I'm about 143lbs. I'm pleased that the weight is comming off, I'm just mad that it isn't going as fast as it had been in the beginning. Hormones are horrid!! I plan on getting back down to 130 by the first of September.

Light - moderate workouts throughout the pregancy are VERY beneficial! With your docs recommendations, of course. You can do light crunches and very light lower back exercises too. Look into water aerobics, if you can find a class. the water is soothing, and it supports up to 70% of your tummy in the water, so it doesn't put alot of strain on your back or joints. Yoga is good too.

I feel ya! My doc told me that alot of that "extra tummy" is actually left over skin. Plus, most women have an extra layer of fat that is suppose to be in the lower abdomin to help protect the baby during pregnancy. I've come the conclusion that my tummy flab won't completely disapear w/o surgury. If you are satisfied with your weight and are longing to go to maintenance mode, then do it.  TUMMY BE DAMNED!!! ( whoopsy, no cursing. Innocent)

That is why I always do a range for my cal intake. Workout days its 1400-1650 and non workout days its 1250-1400. So, if im a little hungry I can have a bite of something and not be out of my "range." Also, varing your cal intake will help with the weight loss. It keeps the metabolism guessing, so it is continuously adjusting.

small meals through out the day help too. Instead of cutting up your cal intake into three meals, have something every couple of hours or so and spread it out through the day.

I used to go bonkers on those Asian Noodle bowls! they wre about 640 clas and I'd eat one for lunch then my late night snack. EVERYDAY!! They are so good, though.

Oh, and Big Texas Cinnemon Rolls! 440 cals a pop! I'd would eat about 3 of those a day before I actually read the serving information!

I have found a not too bad pastry treat. They are called Mrs. Browns Pecan Rolls. Each roll is 100 cals and they come in a pack of three. The rolls aren't too small either. I have them with my cup o joe for my sweet snack in the afternoon. I allow myself about 350 cal for selfish sweet treats a day!

WHOA WHOA WHOA, all the recommendations about what and when to start feeding children food are just that. Recommendations.

If there is no history of a peanut/milk/egg/shell fish allergy in either side of the family, or any other underlining precursor,  then the chances are very very low that a child will develop them. As for "the sole source of nutrition" thing, not true. My doctor said that at 7 months I can start feeding my child baby foods and soft veggies and fruits. The percentage of nutrition that a child can receive from food before 12 months is about 30-40 percent. They have to learn to chew and exercise different parts of the mouth.

The other issue of putting a baby down with a bottle is  a current  theory that it can deform developing teeth, and can cause tooth decay. I find it a very messy affair as most bottles will drip out, as will sippy cups.

Roasted chicken is actually a very good start for a chlild with teeth. It all has to do with the size of the piece and how much they have in thier mouth. I gave my son some roasted chicken when he was around 6 months, and he gobbled down whatever I gave him.

My sister is the same way. Nothing with a sauce or bread on it, no "gushy" textures or any sort of meat dish unless she sees it being prepared/or prepares it herself. ( She has had some HORRID experiences with food. Found a piece of a beak in her breaded chicken sandwich from BK once. A BEAK!!)

Have you tried jucies? I know it isn't exactly the same as fresh fruit and veggies, but there are juices out there with both of them in there, and a cup or two equals a full serving. Have a cup o juice with a piece of toast or serving of oatmeal, and you got breakfast! I would try different types of food from around the world, though. You might find something you LOVE!! I am a big experimentor with food. I like to try new textures and recipies to find something tastey!

Original Post by lanebertrand:

P.S.  This is an aside to those who think 152 is not bad.  While that may be true for some, the degree or amount one needs to lose is all relative.......

.....  The thing I DON'T like is when someone who weighs 135 says "I'm soooo fat.  I just have to lose 5 lbs." in front of a truly obese person who needs to lose 50 or 100 lbs.  Bad form!!  I don't talk about my weight loss issues much around people who are a lot heavier than I am now unless they ask about my surgery.

~Carolyn

Well, why should a "skinny" person who is trying to better their life have to walk on eggshell around someone trying to do the exact same thing? The obese person's weight loss might be more drastic, but both parties are in the pursuit of better health, right? I get the whole aggressive, confrontational responses from people about my weight loss quest. No kidding, a girl in the same room practically shouted " I hate it when skinny bitches whine about loosing weight!" I was 15 lbs over weight at the time, mind you. And I wasn't even being whiney or loud about it. One of the guys was asking me about Yoga, and if it helps with weight loss.

I'm not obese, but I'm one of those "need to loose 10-15lbs" people. On Tuesday I took a fitness test, and my BMI negatively affected my score. 3lbs would have raised my score from "Passing" to "Good." 3lbs doesn't sound like it would break the bank, but I was so angry with myself. Not 8 months ago I scored in the high 80's on this test, and now I didn't even break 80 points! I'm not saying that those pounds would have magically made my score awesome, but it would have helped out alot!

So those 5lbs aren't always "vanity pounds". Like you said in the beginning of your post, weight loss is realtive to the person. I think everyone should keep that in mind.

This is pretty much my life story. Insert my name for your sister and BAM... my sophmore year of High School all over! The best thing that you can do now is to be supportive, understanding, and strong for her. She probably feels LIKE CRAP right now. Hence all the crying. The utter humiliation, rage, frustration and emptiness after being dumped by the guy you lost your virginity to is on a whole other level then a normal dumping.

The one way that you can help her is to take her to a OB/GYN and get a full spectrum STD screen. The last thing she needs is to contract some disease. I'd do that as soon as possible.

She probably already knows that you dissaprove of her actions. That adds to the feeling of humiliation and dispare. I'd talk to her like my sis ( 7 years older) did to me. She only mentioned once that it wasn't a very good idea, that I should have thought it through, and that was it. After that 10 minute, very gentle but honest conversation she just let me cry and rage.

If you really want your mother to understand where you are coming from, say that you got the facts from your doctor, and that it is a serious issue for you. Tell her that you aren't "making it up" and that there is no room for debate. I'd tell her that her support and understanding would be greatly appreciated, but you are going to do what is the best for your health regardless of her position on the matter.

Now, if this is something that you talk about a lot with your mom, she may be trying to tell you nicely that she doesn't want to hear it anymore. Think about it from the flip side. If this is a subject that is constantly brought up and "argued" over, then SHE might be sick of it, too. I think someone mentioned bringing up other subjects. That might be best until both of you can come to a pleasant middle ground.

Yeah, you should be eating more on the days you work out. I'm about the same cal burn/intake as you. I do a range on my workout days of 175-250 more then on non workout days. I've read that varing your cal intake causes the metabolism to continually adjust.

You know, you don't have to read her emails. If it is stressing you out then you probably shouldn't even be reading her forced advice. I know she means well, but enough is enough! If she wants you to have all that fancy stuff, then maybe she should offer to buy it for you for your shower? Hmmm.. might work.

There is nothing wrong with Goodwill, Discount stores or anything like that. I go to a store called Bealls and I can get Tommy Hilfiger baby outfits for around 10-15 bucks. I can go in there with $30 and walk out with two to three outfits of high quality baby clothes. (The best is when I found a $130 dollar dress for $35! It was for my sisters wedding and it rocked!)

The one thing about discount stores or Goodwill stores, you have to have the time and patience to rummage through to find what you want. Ooh, check out Big Lots. They sometimes have the overstock, high end baby equiptment. I found an Even Flow infant carseat and base for $35 at one a few months back!

*edit: the one plus to a changing table is that you aren't bending and strainig your back. We just got a big changing pad and would plop it on the floor or bed after our son was born. Man, picking him up and puting him down it would hurt my back something awful! You could just get a little night table or dresser and put the changing pad on it, or if you have counter space in the bath room you can attach the pad there. That's what we did a few months back.

Pregnancy & Parenting To medicate or not to medicate? May 07 2009

It sounds very familiar to the illness I had at the beginning of the year. Have you tried a method of decongestant? The asthma medication and the antibiotics might help, but the crap in the lungs needs to get out, too! You can try a cool mist humidifier and one of those vick vapor plugs, or  sudafed vapor plugs for babies while he sleeps. I haven't found an OTC decongestant for a child under 5 yet, so I just do the homeopathic remedies. Steamy showers work pretty good too.

It seems that you might have to do the antibotics. I don't like over medicating the kids either, but its been longer than a week, and poor little guy isn't getting better on his own, so its probably time to start the medication.

Its always been my experince that the sinus infections usually go from bad to worse. I rarely get a period of improvment with my infections if I'm not taking medication. I was sick for almost 2 months in highschool because I refused to take the antibiotics. Never again. That was agony!! I went through 2 boxes of tissues a week! and I had to get an inhaler for the bronchidal asthma! SUCK CITY!

Has he been cutting you off from friend and family, either physically or emotionally? Blaming everything on you, or trying to make you feel guilty for NORMAL everyday interactions? Has it been recently, or the whole relationship? If the answer to any of these questions is even "kinda" then the behaviour is abusive.  The main thing here is that you said you aren't happy, and scared. When is that ever a good incentive to stay in a relationship?

I'm assuming that this guy has a job? He has a place to stay, so I guess that he is able to pay the rent? You shouldn't be finacially responsible for this guy.  He isn't a child, and you aren't his mother. Now this might sound weird, but both of you should be selfish right now. I think you should take care of yourself first, and he should take care of himself first. It sounds like he might have some severe insecurities and social problems. Those are HIS problems and HE should take the steps to fix them with the help of a professional. They aren't your problems to fix, and you can't fix them for him.

One last piece of advice. What if your sister/cousin/friend came to you and said the exact same thing. What would be your advice to her? Why should that advice not hold true to your situation? ( And don't let him use the " I love you lets get married" ploy.)The main thing here is your happiness and security. If this guy isn't providing it to you ALL THE TIME YOU ARE WITH HIM, then he isn't the one for you.

I BF until my little boy was 11 months, too. The last straw for me was when he bit me so hard he left little baby teeth imprints! I took him right off and that was it. Straight bottles for about 3 weeks and then sippy cups. He loved getting "mama's" but it was time. It hurt so bad! Really, if your child is eating solid foods and can drink from a sippy cup, then BF isn't really doing anything for them now.

When I stopped taking my prenatal vitamin while breast-feeding my hair fell out like yours did. I was also under a lot of stress from my job at the time, and caring for an infant by myself while my hubby was stationed in Korea. I didn't take my vitamins for three days, and the hair loss was almost instantaneous!! I bought more vitamins in a hurry and it took about a week for the vitamins to kick in and the hair loss to stop.

I would try a multivitamin to augment your vitamin consumption. Surprisingly, the Flintsone chew ables are fairly good in supplying vitamins. But you would probably be better served by getting a multivitamin geared towards a young male.  Vitamin supplements would help I think, but I'd go talk to your doc as well.

You can always spread out your breakfast. Have a cup o joe or a cup o juice first, then when you get a bit more hungry you can have some ceral or something like that. That's what I do, but mainly because I workout three times a week in the morning, and I can't have a full tummy when I exercise.
