Hi all! New to calorie count, and I feel like this group might fit me...I'm 5'2&3/4". So aaaaalmost five-three but not quite. I'm trying to lose about five pounds, mostly because my fat shows up in my belly and in my face. Currently eating around 1,200 calories per day but I wonder if upping the intake does work in shedding pounds faster. according to some of you it does but i'm scared to up my calories; i gain easily. right now i'm overseas and away from home for the summer so that means no usual workouts at the gym. for exercise all i can really do is walk, stretch, crunches, weights, climb stairs, etc (without a calorie burning counter on a machine i don't really know how much i'm burning). my biggest hindrance in losing weight is my tendency to binge when i'm bored/upset. More so due to the boredom, but i'm trying sooo hard to fix that.

anywaaaay, good luck with all your dieting, girls!

emrldfantasy I hear ya girl! I am an emotional eater and eat when I'm bored. That's why I keep myself as busy as I can until I'm ready to go to bed. I can tell you, my house has never been cleaner! Busy is the key!

Welcome nece and becomethesea to the shorties thread! It is nice to be able to chat with people who a short and have the same issues about losing and maintaining weight!

So I just ordered new Tae Bo and Turbo Jam DVDs from Amazon.com and hopefully those will motivate me to exercise more. I have so much trouble motivating myself and I prefer to exercise at a gym but feel guilty when I'm taking time away from my son...can't get past that.

Thanks justpeaz:)

I weighed in again just now and am at 54kg...ie it definately is some hefty bloating going on, went for a run and sprint today though, and have at most taken in 1300 kcal...so it'll drop soon, I have a herbal remedy..err a certain type of oak tree bark (will give exact name to anyone who is interested) ie reduces stomach gas, pains etc ie it really reduces and calms IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) especially good for trouble like bloating :)

shooster I would love the name because I am constantly up and down with bloating, etc.

shooster I hate the scales too because I'm one that bloats all the time with my food allergies and what not so jumping on the scale can change up to 5 pounds in less than 24 hours but go back down. Its a pain. I started taking Activia again since that stuff seemed to keep my bloating in check. Good stuff I tell ya!

lilmissfina and yeedy I use olive oil all the time when I need to cook with oils. Very good for you, in moderation of course! I wasn't aware of the spray but it is on my list when I go grocery shopping next! Fabulous idea!

Well guess what?! It was a Christmas miracle! I actually exercised last night and kept myself busy. If I keep doing that the weight will come off in no time!!

I have not always been this weight. I was 135 before I started. I felt horrible. Way to much weight for my size. Slowly I lost it. In the beginning I did not know what I was doing. Just eating less, not exercising. I lost 10LB and stayed there for years. Then about 3 years ago I started working out. 2 years ago I got serious and started weight training and working out better. Eating better and now I eat clean most of the time.

It is hard for short girls. Pretty much an everyday struggle. But I like how I feel now as opposed to then so it keeps me motivated. I also love food and love to eat. Today was my cheat meal so I just got done eating a cookie AND a brownie. As soon as I am done with it I think about next Fridays cheat meal. Cry I love brownies. Laughing

Tomorrow is my major workout day. Hours in the gym to keep the weight off. Sprints and weight. Always a struggle.

Gosh I wish I could work out as much as you do! It is so hard to find the time. I work full time and try to spend as much time with my son as I can when I'm not working, plus I went back to school to get my degree. I just feel really guilty taking time out of the little time I have to go to the gym. I know it sounds like an excuse but with my schedule (plus my husband works nights so I only see him 2 hours a day).

Hi, Yes I totally understand. It is not an excuse. Family is the most important thing to me too.

I am lucky that I have a gym where I work, I go in early on weight days and lift. Then after work I do the cardio. On the weekend I get up VERY early. (Crazy) early and go in and get it done so I have the rest of the day on the weekends to spend with my family and get stuff done.

I also have a treadmill at home and free weights so that is where I do my leg and ab work, squats, lunges and so on.

All of this before anyone is out of bed. Sealed

I work full time too and then out of my home on the weekend. (some) weekends.

My husband is disabled so I do many of the things he cannot do. My little boy has epilepsy so that is also a challenge. So really working out is the only thing I do for myself and it helps me to relieve my stress.

Just do what you can which is more than most people do. I only know about 5 other people where I work that workout or watch their diet at all so we are all doing great!!

littleshellys you are very inspiring! Well I didn't exercise last night but I'm going to tonight! I just need to do as much as I can at home and I need to get my butt out of bed early! I need to make sure i don't hit that snooze!!

Anyway, I have lots of DVDs and a treadmill so that works. Plus the Wii Ft which is FABULOUS!!!!

skwinkle I agree that staying around 1,400 to 1,500 calories a day works best. I don't seem to lose as much if my calories are too low. Even though I have a gym membership, working out at home seems to work best for me (when I actually do it). That way I can get my son envolved and it is a little more time I get to spend with him.

I am going to try tonight to get on a routine...someone PLEASE call me out tomorrow to make sure i did and give me he%& if I didn't! Smile

Thanks for the support ladies!

I'm 5'0 with a pretty athletic build. At my smallest I was 127, and there was NO way I was going to get any smaller than that. However, that was when I was 15, and now 6 years later I've yo yo-ed up and down and finally up up up to a whopping 176. Oh, university and the freshman....way more than 15.

Anyway, I'm usually good at being able to lose weight, it's the keeping it off that's difficult. I'm hoping that by continuing to keep track of what I'm eating on here even after I've reached my goal will help.

Let's keep eachother motivated. :)

Also, in reference to someone mentioning the charts....screw them. When I was 135 BMI told me I was "overweight, nearly obese" when I was in the best shape of my life. :)

lynners to stop yo-yoing completely think of it as a lifestyle change instead of a diet and remember to eat things you crave, just in moderation. That's the key. I LOVE food and at first it was hard for me to stop eating when I was full. Now when I eat I use a salad plate instead of a dinner plate and pack it full. That way I think I'm getting a lot more than I am!

Welcome demila to the shortie's club! Wink

I did the protein shakes for awhile. I bought the powder from Wal Mart but I got the vanilla flavor. I buy frozen fruit to mix with it along with fat free milk. Very, very good! My son loves them!

makettle how did you know a Bud Light is the cure?! I keep them stocked! Well after having the enhancement, a little boob swelling is nothing for me. The pain of going through the surgery and not being able to sit up by myself for 2 weeks was bad enough not to mention the PAIN! Yell

You know, when I stay between 1200 - 1500 calories a day and get in at least 30 minutes of exercise along with all my other activities I have lost 2 or 3 pounds in one week and I'm between 5' and 5'1" so it can be done. Just don't starve yourself, stay active and eat healthy only taking in the good fats and limiting your fats to about 20% of your daily caloric intake. Remember 1g of fat = 9 calories.

Makettle Any time I eat red meat I swell up. It is crazy!! But having food allergies in a way that just causes me to bloat and have "issues" can throw me off anytime but its worse at my time of the month. I'm allergic to soy (which is in EVERYtHING) and fish (which I eat anyways because its good for me and I love it).

Where I notice the swelling is around my butt and and stomach. No swelling in the boobs but maybe that's why I got fake ones! Wink Anyway, never heard the dark chocolate thing but I'm probably one of the only women out there that really doesn't care for chocolate. Every now and then I'll have some M & M's but that's it.

Well from what I've heard at the gym, from weight watches and other programs that a "healthy lifestyle" is 80% what you eat and 20% exercise. If you're looking at adding a few extra calories to your diet and a little more fat (we need fat to keep our body working, just not too much) eat nuts or an avacado. Those are the good fats.

I'm not one for junk food like candy and cookies but I love salt and can't completely give it up! As far as upping calories, for me if I eat less than 1200 calories I notice that I don't lose weight as fast as I do if I eat 1200-1500 calories a day. I think it is because my body thinks its starving if I get below a certain number of calories a day.

I have to say now that I'm counting calories and activities my house will stay a lot cleaner because instead of sitting on my butt I will be cleaning, cleaning, cleaning!

That makes sense. I notice if I eat 1200 - 1500 calories per day I seem to lose weight quicker. What I've started to drink is Oolong Tea which is a natural way to speed up your motabolism. See this article http://www.oolongtea.org/e/health/04.html. It is very interesting! I found it at the store for $1.99 so  figured I would try it. I guess you're supposed to drink 3-4 cups a day.

Well kks I'm super jealous! I just need to get through the next week and a half then I will be back on track as far as what I really weigh. Its not fair for us that  1 to 2 weeks of each month we are completely off!!

I would LOVE to go to the gym at 5am but my husband works nights and I work days so someone is always home with our son. He doesn't get home until 7 to 7:30am and I leave for work at 8am aso I have to go after work which is really hard. I would much rather do it first thing in the morning so I can use the energy throughout the day.

Well you guys are giving me motivation to get back into the gym so I will start tonight. I love going to the gym. I just use that time to build muscle since I have a treadmill at home. I also bought the Hip Hop Abs which is a lot of fun. Laura, that's for the info on Turbo Jam because I really have wanted to buy it. Oh and thank you Misty for the suggestion on what foods to bring to lunch. I need to start taking the time to put a well balanced lunch together. Yours sounds great!

Wow, I'm starting to feel like I'm not alone here! The 1200 now sounds accurate. Thanks for explained it the way you did holsfisher! Laughing Makes a lot more sense now!

You know, I'm between 5' - 5'1" depending on who measures me. I think I looked the absolute best at 115. I don't understand those weight charts. I think each person needs to be their own judge on where they feel the best. No matter how skinny I get I'm always towards the upper part of the "normal" BMI.

Do any of you have a desk job? What do you bring to work to help you with a proper diet? Like what kinds of foods? I'm trying not to have too many processed foods. I am allergic to soy which is in EVERYTHING that's processed. I just have stomach "issues" from it so my weight can fluxuate about 5 pounds in 1 day due to the food that I eat and sometimes I just can't avoid it.

So what fun things does everyone do to exercise? Right now all I do is workout on the Wii Fit with my son which is really fun. Who has a gym membership? What do you usually do there to keep it interesting?

Well I have been sticking to about 1200 calories a day. I noticed that the patches of time where I forget to eat and I consume less than 1000 calories a day I seem to not lose as much weight. I guess its because the body thinks it is starving?? I don't know.

I have to say that for some people sweets are their weakness during the time of the month but my weakness is salt...and I've cut way back compared to what I used to eat but I just can't resist it during my time of the month. I cut it back this month though and I seem to be more bloated. Very weird. Now I have started drinking Oolong Tea - 4 cups a day everyday and cut out coffee. I wonder?

Oh I'm so glad you responded to me! How often do you weigh yourself? I weigh myself everyday. I found that doing that helps me stay on track. Not weighing myself is almost like saying "calories don't count".

Anyway, is there anything else you can do besides drink water and take Midol? Usually Midol works but not this month. Cry

I would love to join! I'm 30 1/2 and really trying to keep on track with my healthy eating (I love food way too much) and lose the pesky 10 pounds I gained with summer and vacation. I am married with an 8 year boy so it is a little hard to eat completely healthy with the boys. This website has been a really big help for support and motivation.

I do need to get on an exercise plan. Other than taking the stairs at work and playing on the Wii with my son (he just got the Wii fit and it's awesome!!!!) I don't do a lot else. I do have a membership at a gym but it's finding time to go.

Anyway I'm very excited about this!
