Hey, Alyssa. If you are not overweight, why do you want to lose 10 lbs? I'm more interested in your measurements than your weght...It's that "pound of feathers vs. pound of rocks" philosophy. If you are not fat, and you lose weight---it is muscle that you are losing. And that is disasterous because if you have less muscle, it is easier to gain weight because you don't have the machinery to use fuel anymore. SO, I'm afraid if you are just losing weight to get to a magic number on the scale, it will back fire on you and when you are old like me (I'm 55) you WILL be overweight and it will be because you just wanted to be one size smaller when you were 18. |

I grew up on a farm. Believe me, if you have to go into a field, plow it, plant it, nurture it, harvest it, can/freeze/dry to store for winter---you are expending WAYYY more calories than if you pop something from your freezer into the microwave. Imagine how much energy was expended 150 years ago to put a meal on the table. You'd spend every waking moment in some stage of work towards finding or preparing food. It is so easy for us now -- we don't have to expend the energy to get the food on the table, we have to make sure we work hard enough at the gym/park/whatever to be able to eat what we want. As far as the "rules" and pyramids and stuff---they keep changing. And what you should eat and what you should avoid changes depending on who's talking. I think there is a perfect diet for each of us...but I don't think there is ONE diet for everyone. If a diet is torture, you're not going to stay on it. It has to be something you can live with long term...your lifestyle has to change. The change was easier for me because I developed food allergies. It's easy to swear off something that makes you sick. So--no sugar or mayonnaise, and very little white flour, rice or potatoes---but lots of meat, green & yellow veggies and fresh fruit. Now, I just need to practice portion control and stop late-night eating. |
