| Weight Gain | ideal weight for 5'4"? | Oct 27 2008 07:19 (UTC) |

hey there...i am 19, 5'4" and 113 lbs, just to give you an idea. I used to be 130, my goal was 116. But when I hit 116 the other 3lbs just kind of lost themselves.
and it makes me sad to hear that you went through an ED, you are really young. at 14 you should have to worry about that. keep strong and don't let it get you down. stop focusing on it, and just let yourself live. |

hello hello hello all!
So new stats: 19yo 5'4" SW: 127 lbs CW: 115-116 lbs (Hannikate I made my goal and then some! I am so excited!!!!) So basically what I am trying to so so so hard right now is maintane. I really don't wanna gain the weight back, and I've been really paranoid about it. I try not to be, but its really stressing me out. I need some advice on how to avoid panicking.
And then yesterday I went to a meeting that had trail mix. I ate like a bowl of it. I felt so guilty, but it was the first binge since the summer, and it was mostly nuts. As always, I love almonds and cashews. So now I am just afraid that I will fall into my old habits...help anyone? |

So doni, this is what I've been doing for the past 2 months: 1200-1400 calories a day (I try to give myself wiggle room because if I try to squish my calories to 1200, I feel more tempted to binge). About once in two weeks I will let myself eat whatever I want without counting calories (which is hard to do since I know the calorie count of practically everything). This boosts my metabolism for the next two weeks and prevents a future binge. I love working out. I hated it in the beginning, absolutely despised the gym, but now I love going. You get to know people. I try and go 4 days in a row, with a day of rest afterwards. The key to working out is doing DIFFERENT exercises so you target your whole body. A combination of cardio and weights is best, and cross-training is crucial to prevent muscle loss. I try and combine different cardio machines on different days. For example: Day 1: 30min treadmill, 30 min elliptical Day 2: 45 minutes Stepmaster, 15 minutes gazelle (like an elliptical but for your butt :p) Day 3: 1hr brisk walking uphill. It keeps my body guessing, and doesn't bore me. In combination to the cardio, I also do free weights and machines for roughly an hour. I do abs everyday, plus one other body part (abs+legs, abs+arms, abs+back). After a 2 hour work out I usually burn up around 1000 calories. This gives me wiggle room with my calories, so I can eat a little bit more.
hharris- don't worry about the weight. I am sure it must be sodium, since asian foods are usually cooked in a lot of soy sauce. |

To gain muscle mass (like you are trying to do) you HAVE to lift weights. Its not possible otherwise. |

I do the same thing...so to avoid this, I just cut myself a piece of whatever I really want, enjoy and then stop picking at it. Its much better to go over your calorie limit this way than just by picking. its more satisfying and you're less likely to repeat the action. also, if i feel super guilty i just go to the gym for an extra 30min. it just makes me feel better cause I know i've created a larger deficit. |

meeshmeesh, I used to be 5'4" and like 110lbs :p. Realistically I know I will never return to this weight since I am a little older now (and more toned w00t!) but between 115-117 is a good range. Its more of a matter of being comfortable with my weight, than an actual number that matters to me. in other news, this weekend (sunday and monday) was a slight disaster. I was so happy at reaching 119.2, that I just kinda ate whatever I wanted to...totalling to a whole bunch of calories (which I am not bothering to count). buuuuuuuuuut this morning I weighed in at 120 (which isn't bad, prolly sodium intake anways). Soooo I have averted a slight crisis, and am now to my daily 1200 calories. Heatherx - forget about the scales. i would say, choose one and stick to it so even if it is a little off, it will always be off by that number. orrr forget the number completely and see at what point in your diet you feel most comfortable. other heather - ahhh you are so close to your goal! I am sure its water weight! keep going!
Tips for eating right - eat your calories throughout the day continuously, and that way you will never feel starved (which keeps a binge at bay :p ) |

hello all! welcome nolabels, buttons and doni :)
SW: 130 (125 on CC) Last week: 120.8 CW: 119.2 !!!! Woohoo! I haven't seen the teens in over a year :p GW: 117 (maybe 115? Who knows, I just want to get to maintenance level before college) Heather - I've actually realized that upping my calories once a week generally helps with my weight loss. I do it if I'm super hungry one day, but I make sure to exercise a little more. I am learning to listen to my body - if it wants more calories, I will eat, and if I am not hungry I won't eat. So sometimes I am around 900 calories (I know, I know 1200 min, but some days I just can't eat) while others at 1700. And how are you already graduating college??! Hanni - Keep going and don't give up. I was thinking, this might be TMI, but if you are on birth control, that might be the reason you aren't losing weight. Some BC's don't let you lose weight easily, and make you gain weight instead. |

all good ideas guys...we should start a club/group and keep posting over the year... i think its definitely a social pressure to go out to eat. I am NOT getting a meal plan (not required) so hopefully forcing me to buy/make my own food. I love cooking anyways so it shouldn't be too bad. its just so easy to slip up sometimes and be like, "oh this won't hurt, just take a bite" also I tried the "i don't eat ice cream anymore" line. My friend just kept pushing it towards me until I finally told her that it was making me angry. then she got upset at me for being angry (i think that was an unreasonable reaction) |

Same happens to me, so I eat an extra 200 calories right after the gym (one cup of egg whites with a little turkey and broccoli - around 200 calories) listen to your body- it knows what its doing. if its hungry FEED IT. Don't starve, you will end up binging. Eat smart, lots of protein, lots of veggies, stuff that makes you feel full. Also, eat a few nuts (especially almonds) before working out. gives you a super energy burst and doesn't make you feel hungry afterwards. |

Order the thai lettuce wraps with just regular grilled chicken and don't eat the sauces it comes with - your basic salad. or order the chicken medallions with ALL sauces to the sides, grilled with minimal butter. instead of mashed potatoes order a side of broccolli. (around 700 calories) have some cheese cake - eat half, save the rest. (around 700 calories) Total: 1400 calories. Perfectly acceptable calorie count. this is your life - you can't restrict yourself from living. your body isn't super duper fragile, it can take it. go to the gym before or after if you feel guilty. also cheesecake sucks at giving info - if everyone knew the horrendously disgusting amount of calories in some the dishes (shrimp scampi - 1500 calories! to think that used to be my favorite dish), no one would go. |

woohoo heather! thats super exciting! My goal right now is to get to maintenance level before school starts, but I think I have hit a plateau...my weight has not BUDGED from 120. Hmmm, I was thinking I'd zigzag but I am afraid of gaining the little bit of weight and then not being able to lose it...and for some odd reason I feel like I've gained weight. I just look rounder somehow in the mirror, and its slightly discouraging. Also, I was talking to a friend that I hadn't seen in a year. We were talking about meal plans at college. I told him I wasn't getting one since it made me gain ridiculous weight last year. All he said was "yea I can tell." And I couldn't decide whether or not he was being sarcastic...'cause I've lost the majority of that weight (10lbs is a lot!) and I swear, if I didn't work out as much I'd be down to 117, like I was before. I didn't have much muscle before, and now I definitely do (almost have abs!) I laughed and tried to write it off as a joke, but it kinda stung. I've been working so hard this summer, at the gym, dealing with food and everything. I am really trying hard to learn portion control, so I can deal with it at college. His comment just added to my feeling of roundness. I feel like a roly-poly :/ |

Yes, it will. To create long lean muscles and toned legs instead, combine cardio with some sort of leg work out - squats with weights, lunges, step ups, anything of that sort. |

| Fitness | does weight lifting make women even SLIGHTLY visibly "big"??? | Aug 06 2008 14:13 (UTC) |

I think a combination of cardio and lifting is best. I used to focus mainly on cardio and light weights, but now I've switch over to more weights that cardio (it much more fun I think!) I've seen an increase in muscle mass, but I am proud of it. I'd rather be muscle-y and skinny than skinny-fat. But I still keep up with the cardio (although less now), just to create a larger deficit, since I eat a little bit more when I work out. |

| Weight Loss | Please Criticize | Aug 05 2008 14:56 (UTC) |

Lots of people criticize coffee, but I love it. And, if you drink it black its been known to increase your metabolism by 15%. It also helps decrease cholesterol and risk of heart attack (but you have to drink like a ridiculous amount, 6 cups a day (which I sometimes accidently do)). As for the soda - really try and cut it out. Recently there was a study done, that even the 0 calorie soda has an effect on weight loss. Also, it increases your chances of heart attack/heart problems later on in life, if you've been an avid soda drinker your whole life. Its basically consuming chemicals. It seems to me that you are bored with your diet maybe? I was like you, I depended a lot of protein bars, and honestly, what will happen when I reach my goal weight? So I am trying to learn to live healthier and eat healthier instead of eating for a diet. Try and spice it up - Have a some turkey on wheat instead of a protein shake. Add some nuts into your diet. Scrambled egg whites with a tiny bit of sesame oil and lots of veggies is around 200 calories but tastes great and is very filling. I bought a low-cal cookbook and its really made a difference. |

I started eating healthy/working out in January, and only lost 3lbs by April. Then from May to June I lost another 2 pounds. Then all of a sudden in July I lost 6lbs. Like Magic, poof! The only thing I changed was that I was stricter with my diet (no cheat days, eating strictly between 1200-1400 calories, I try and zig zag to keep my metabolism up), and I also got a trainer one a week for 30 min. to show me how to lift correctly. Apparently I had been doing it wrong, and ever since then I've been seeing better results. So don't give up! The same thing happened to me! |

I am the only one who's calorie counting, but my family supports it, buying me lots of fruits, veggies, lean meats. My mum also cleaned out the pantry for me from all highly junky foods. My little sister started complaining but we kept a cupboard for her and my dad. My sister eats whatever she wants. She is 00 and does not gain a pound. At all. EVER. She can have like three grilled sandwiches in one day and it will not be reflected on the scale the next, even with water weight gain blahdiblah. My dad eats fairly healthy, except he has a huge sweet tooth. Eats so much chocolate and pastries and cakes. Yet magically, like my sister, stays pretty slim. My mum tries to eat healthy. She cooks really delicious healthy meals that whole family enjoys, but sometimes she just eats too much. She's also trying to lose weight, so its nice to have a partner-in-crime. |

For me if I suddenly drop down really low, and then go up really high in one day, it means I have lost a pound, and it shows it on the scale over the next few days. Its kinda weird how that works...water or something... hanni how are you doing? |

Cream cheese on Crossaint covered in raspberry jam with crumbled egg on top...YUM. Buttered toast with black caviar spread on top (when I was a kid, 5 years old, that's all I would eat. My parents thought I was crazy...its still delicious). Mix boiling milk, a TON of feta cheese, some butter and sugar. Put extremely dry toast in a bowl and cover with milk concoction. Cover bowl with plate for 5minutes, so the butter and feta and sugar all melt together and seep through the toast... Enjoy!

I had a "no-no" list...until I got so bitter one day that I binged on everything and then just felt horrible afterwards. Sooooooooo, live and learn, I threw out the list. Now whenever I crave something (like Ginger Ice Cream ohmigosh so delicious) I will make it fit into my calorie count. Or peanut butter...i know its good for you but the calories are so high i can only let myself eat a little bit at a time. Anyways moral of the story - its ok to have these foods once in a while. sometimes you get so caught up in calorie counting that you forget what its like to eat like a normal person. An egg WON'T make you gain weight. You just have to learn how to fit stuff into your calories, and allow yourself a cheat day every once in while (for example, upping your calories to maintenance level) so you won't go crazy. |

| Young Calorie Counters | Just starting. Would someone answer these questions? | Aug 04 2008 04:06 (UTC) |

runnabe has a pretty good grasp on it...just a few more additions:
Starvation mode is when you eat less than 1200 calories on a consistent basis, thus causing you metabolism to become VERY slow. The body thinks its in a famine and once you start introducing more calories to your diet, anything extra will be converted to fat. This pretty much undoes all of your hard work, so you must eat at least 1200 calories everyday. You need 1200 for basic human functions, breathing, heart beating, blinking ect ect ect. Cardio isn't the best for weight lost, it can destroy muscle. What cardio does is create a calorie deficit big enough for you to lose fat. I do do cardio everyday, but I really saw a difference once I started lifting. The best solution is a combination of cardio AND weights - Cardio creates a calorie deficiency allowing you to lose fat, while weights will build muscle. Eventually you will have a nice toned body. I would recommend starting out slow (I started at a light 10min jog and am now up to an hour's run). Its best to keep a daily update of your calories - that way you are always on track and eventually you'll be able to build a routine. I generally do keep track of all calories, but once I reach my goal, I'll slow down a bit and give myself some leeway. Your weight will fluctuate DAILY. I can gain like 5 lbs some days, depending on weather I've done a heavy work out, eaten something salty like pickles, not drank enough water, drank too much water...the list is endless. As long as your weight loss TREND is down, you are losing weight. Welcome to CC! Its a good community :) |

Nice job heather :) Did you, by any chance, notice that the closer you got to your goal the slower you were losing? I think thats happening to me...also I think I look smaller, but I haven't lost a considerable amount of weight. I know muscle weighs more, but it would be nice if the scale reflected it :p |
