I would like to add, the idea that someone should not feel guilty about supporting an industry that kills 60 BILLION animals a year for food, and is completely destroying our planet is ludicrous.

Make no mistake about it, this is an ethical issue and like any other ethical issue we must take a stand.

do you buy boca burgers or silk soy milk? many of these vegetarian products are owned by meat and dairy companies. so i'd say that someone who is buying local organic grass fed beef or catching a fish with a line and hook near their home (which will last for several meal. also assuming there is a 'clean' body of water near them) is making a better decision for the earth, others and themselves than those who choose to buy those kind of goods that have to be shipped and packaged from far off places.

guilt shouldn't stem from eating meat. guilt should stem from the way the animals are raised and killed, the large quantity of meat that is consumed and the effect that has on the earth. you shouldn't make someone feel guilty for being an omnivore. plenty of animals are omnivores. it isn't murder when a bear eats a fish, is it?

i'm not saying anyone should discontinue their vegan diets that has a healthy response to such. but i think people lose sight of what's really important. we should try to keep the planet as close to it's natural state as possible. that discludes factory farms and commericial fishing but includes an omnivorous diet.
if vegans continue to spend time trying to get EVERYone to convert to veganism they will miss the oppurtunity they had to pursuade the same people against something more important, to stop supporting factory farming.

Vegetarian Pescatarian vs. Vegetarian... Aug 19 2009

i don't think any of us eat seafood because we don't care about the environment, or because we're unaware of the damage it does. as i said, i try my very best to only eat humanely and sustainably caught seafood, and the amount of seafood i eat is really very little. that's what i am currently able to sustain, at this point in my life. even so, it was an incredibly tough decision to start eating fish again after being veg for almost 5 years. that's just me, i'm sure everyone else has their own reasons, and i'm sure they're all perfectly valid. just the same as plenty of vegetarians have valid reasons for not being vegan.

just because i'm not a vegan doesn't mean i'm evil, or misinformed. i could choose to be ignorant and eat a steak with every meal, but i don't. i do the best i can within my means, and i don't appreciate being made to feel like it's not good enough. this isn't an "all or nothing" area - we're all contributing, whether we go all the way or not.

This is the biggest damn list of boohoo feel bad for me excuses I have ever heard.

Here you are talking about your "tough decision" to begin consuming fish, when these animals go through absolute hell, not to mention our oceans and fish populations are on the verge of collapse.

You do realize that "humane, sustainable fish" is purely a marketing ploy to ease your guilt, dont you?

Do you understand the meaning of "sustainability"? It means, by all practical purposes that you can continue doing something forever. As in, you do not take more from the land then it can provide for you. Seeing as we have a current world population of 6.7 billion, eating any sort of flesh including meat can not and will not be sustainable. As in, if every person lived and ate the way you did we would need multiple planets in order to make that lifestyle "sustainable" by definition.

You either make an ethical decision to stop exploiting animals and the earth, or you don't and have to face the consequences of being responsible for that decision. No free passes here.

alright. i tried to ignore you for a while because you sound like an arrogant jerk and i usually try to avoid conversations with such people. but you have no right to say that what loudashope is saying is boohoo. she is saying what she thinks and feels and it seems to me that she is genuine in her belief.

it's people like you that i have a problem with. i was vegan for 3 years. i went vegan when i got into punk/hardcore. i'm sure that is something that you can relate to. i watched all the factory farming videos and put the time into researching it and i committed to it for 3 years of my life.

now, i'm sure you've probably been vegan for much longer and are probably level 99 by now and have immunity to all omnivore attacks against you but you should really hear me out.

i tried really hard to eat a healthy vegan diet within my income limitations. after 3 years i was deficient in iron, b-12, selenium, protein and calcium. that's even after eating clean, balanced and taking a multi-vitamin and drinking protein shakes. so i started eating fish and eggs. it was weird at first but it was something i really looked into and i know has been great for my health. i feel alive again.

i'm not going to get into an arguement about why these foods are great and nutritionally packed. i'm not going to get into an arguement about if you believe we're omnivores or not. what i am going to say is that i did this for my health and people like you need to respect that.

why preach to someone who does not support factory farms and tries to catch their own fish?? because they are killing a fish? go yell at a bear, they eat way more fish. there are plenty of animals (lions, dogs, cats, exc...) that kill and eat other animals. is it only murder when we do it or should they be put on trial too?

i guess what i am really trying to say is that you should be vegan because that's clearly what you want. but you aren't helping your cause when you act elitest about it. no one is going to listen to you if you act like a snob. and that hurts the cause you say that you care so much about.

also you need to realize that not everyone wants to be a vegetarian or vegan but there are people (who choose to eat meat because they believe that is what is most natural for them as omnivores) who would be all about boycotting factory farmed meat or fish that has been caught by dragging nets across the ocean floor or that produces by-catch. maybe you could encourage them to do that instead of giving the whole meat is murder lecture.

there aren't any sort of passes of any type, free, payed for or earned. you don't get a pass by being vegan. we're all sharing the same planet and if it goes to crap no one is going to save you for good behavior. so i'd recommend trying to be more open minded so that you could maybe try some genuine communication and actually work towards achieving something positive.

I already posted my plan for today in the regular 'what did you eat today?' thread but it fell through. so here is the real deal.

breakfast
organic/free range poached egg; strawberries; grapefruit juice w/ added calcium

lunch
tofu and veggie stir fry w/ jasmine rice; two light beers; angel food cake w/ fresh peach slices and so delicious vanilla soy ice cream

dinner
vegetable soup; rosemary and olive oil triscuits; sardines

my tummy was pretty upset from dessert i think. so dinner was unwanted but forced. :(

if your working out you could be gaining muscle. muscle weighs more than fat but it has a smaller volume than a pound of fat. so maybe you are replacing fat with muscle. thusly you might be getting smaller and healthier but gaining weight.

Firstly, how the heck could you eat fish and still think you were vegetarian? It's flesh, right?

Secondly, you're not just a different type of vegetarian if you're a pescatarian. You're not vegetarian at all.

I'm not a vegetarian but it irks me when people who don't eat red meat but eat either chicken or fish (or both) say their vegetarian. If you eat meat, you ain't.

And to whoever said eating salmon might have saved her life - whaaa? Vegetarianism can be as unhealthy or as healthy as any other kind of diet. Like an omnivorous diet, it is what you make it.

i think she was very young when she made this decision. it could be confusing for someone so young. i remember thinking a lot more ridiculous things than that when i was her age.

Plus, keep in mind that the OP is a teen and therefore most likely still not totally independent in her food choices (in her post, it sounded like family members forced her to eat the fish).  I'm sure when she becomes an adult and can make her own food choices that she will do what is ethically sound for her.   She did mention that she did well with the "nothing without a face" concept, which indicates a leaning towards your beliefs.

I had parents who ate a lot of meat and I still became a vegetarian, even after I ate meat at least once a day for the first 10-12 or so years of my life.  I think if a parent were to force you to eat meat, that would be considered child abuse and child protective services would need to be called.

oh my gosh. really???
making a kid eat meat and abusing a child is very different.
apparently you have never seen child abuse or been a parent.

I don't really agree with pescatarianism being anything close to vegetarianism.  The whole point of being a vegetarian or a vegan is to not eat anything with a face or heart or feelings.  I guess some people do it more for health reasons, but as far as I go, I can't ever see myself eating anything that I know has feelings.  It would be like eating my husband, which would be gross.

That's YOUR whole point. other people have other reasons. it is close to vegetarian but not the same as pescatrians eat fish while vegetarians do not.

Foods Who is using stevia instead of sugar or splenda? Aug 18 2009
16:24 (UTC)
Original Post by mollymouser:

My endocrinologist told me to stay away from Stevia because of its potential problematic impacts on my blood sugar/insulin levels.

As recently as 10-16-07, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration  has warned: "If stevia is to be used in a dietary supplement for a technical effect, such as use as a sweetener or flavoring agent, and is labeled as such, it is considered an unsafe food additive."

On August 17, 2007, the FDA warned the maker of Celestial Seasons teas (Hain Celestial Group Inc.) about a potentially unsafe herb (Stevia) in some of its teas, saying it might be dangerous to blood sugar, reproductive, cardiovascular and renal systems. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration sent a letter to Hain, dated Aug. 17, calling the herb, a natural sweetener made from a South American herb called stevia, "an unsafe food additive."

*   *   *

As far as I'm concerned, I recommend caution using Stevia as a sweetener until its been scientifically confirmed that its not a danger to your blood sugar, reproductive, cardiovascular and renal symptoms.

=^..^= MOLLY

the FDA will do that with a lot of natural herbal solutions. you can not patent something that is naturally occuring like say...cabbage. and if you can't patent something then there is a danger in claiming that it can cure or help some type of disease because drug companies or artificial sweetener companies in this case can't make (as much, if any) money from it.

the FDA has good guidelines but you can't trust everything they do.

Weight Loss American size 0? Aug 18 2009
16:05 (UTC)

here's the deal. women's sizing is always crazy. i can be a size 1 in one brand and 5 in another.

Ambercrombie & Fitch is well known for marking clothes a bit smaller. Therefore more girls want to shop there and pay an extra $10-30 for an article of clothing because they can say they are a 0 or a 00 when actually they are probably a 2 or something like that.

it's crazy. i wish women's clothing would just be like men's and use actually inch measurements (in your case cm). it would make everything so much easier.

which seems strange because i would have to weigh 120 at 5'5" which seems like kinda a lot for my. maybe it's cause i have a small frame but even if i totally stuff myself everyday i usually can only get up to 115 max.
