Foods Anyone know of a healthy butter? Jun 14 2009

Good to know -- I suspected that Smart Balance may not be guilty of the "margarine sins" because the people I've known who used it were usually super picky when it came to using 'natural' foods.

Despite that it's more calories -- I've read a lot that suggests eating real butter is better for you than the fake stuff. Might be something worth looking in to. I don't know much about the smart balance stuff (I know a lot of people who are fans) but margarine is supposed to be particularly terrible for you because of the kinds of fat that it has in it. Read up on it if you're curious...

I think the site's calculator tends to under-estimate what you should be eating.

What I used to go by was having a net deficit that was no more than 20% of your Total Daily Energy Expenditure. Your net deficit is your Total Daily Energy Expenditure - Number of calories you eat.

(TDEE) which is equal to your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) times your activity factor:

Activity factor:
Sedentary =BMR X 1.2
Lightly active = BMR X 1.375
Moderately active = BMR X 1.55
Very active = BMR X 1. 725
Extremely active =BMR X 1.9

Some people use another system (and I suspect this is how the CC calculator is programmed) to subtract anywhere from 500-1000 calories from your TDEE. I think the 20% of TDEE is a more reasonable method because it adjusts for the size of the person proportionally.

Didn't know I was gonna geek out on you, did you? :P Hope that's a bit helpful.

Woah boy --- you're going to get a flood of responses to this question, m'dear. Yes -- you should definitely increase your calories. There are all kinds of calcuations you could do - different theories as to the way to find the best number for you - but they are all guesstimates --- go up to 1500 for a while and see how you do  -- then adjust from there.

1200 is barely anything and is probably less than your basal metabolic rate :(

I did 1300 once when I knew a lot less about calories and it made me absolutely MISERABLE. You must be feeling awful ya poor thing! Up those calories, but keep it healthy and keep exercising -- you are going to feel SO much better, and probably lose faster, too. :)

Hey hon - not only did I (and a few of my friends) never gain weight on the pill, recent studies have not been able to show a connection between taking birth control and gaining weight, either. Don't worry about that -- just do what your doctor wants you to do. :)

LesMills group fitness classes - esp. BodyCombat and also BodyPump. (I miss flow, they don't have it at the gym I'm at now. :( ) These were LIFE CHANGING for me. They're how I learned to love exercise.

Hershey's 60 mik chocolate sticks - these are sent from heaven - the length makes me feel like I'm getting a decent amount of chocolate - it's just enough to calm a craving.

Celery and other fresh vegetables - I love to make myself my own personal veggie tray and nosh on fresh peppers, celery, and carrots. I sometimes allow myself a tiny bit of hummus or low cal ranch to dip them in.

Vinegar: I LOVE vinegar -- almost all kinds - it's a glorious replacement for salad dressing, it makes a tray of veggies have more kick - I even put it on baked and boiled potatoes -- helps me  use less butter and salt.

Hey everybody! Oh boy, was I bad on the staff trip to Cape Cod... *hangs head in shame* BUT -- I am getting back on track, doing swell today -- have an "A" for nutrition and am at 579 calories so far (it's 1:30 p.m.) Plus, I found a gym right near where I work that has BodyPump and BodyCombat (*does the snoopy dance*) so I have a free trial for a week, and then I am most likely going to sign myself up. I am super excited, and am probably going to go to Pump or maybe one of their non-lesmills classes this evening.

How's everyone else hanging in there?

Hey there all! Not avoiding you guys, just swamped with my first week on the job (at MyGym Children's Fitness Center) and it's tech week for my show. Just got back from CVS where I got myself some clearance green tea w. hoodia pills... if they don't help me lose, at least they'll keep me hyper for the kids... hahaha

Foods Could you live without meat? Jul 28 2008

I really believe that people's bodies are different, and some do great without meat while others don't do well at all. I have a blood disorder (a kind of chronic anemia) and am actually encouraged to eat red meat once a week

I think liking or not liking meat may be a reflection of how much your particular body "needs" to have it.

No way, José!

I, too, love chicken breast and eat it 3-4 times a week. I also couldn't survive without hamburger (I know, but I use the 95% lean kind...) for tacos and marzetti at least twice a month! I think the smell of ground beef and onions cooking is one of the best scents in the world.

I also love fish, and the occasional steak as a fancy treat.

Yeah, I'm a total carnivore. My totem animal is a cat, without question! :P

Hey loves - just had an epicly awesome salad for lunch --

Used the leftover fajita makings from my dinner last night -- wegman's tangy chicken (which I'd cooked on the stove top with olive oil, garlic and onion), half an avocado, a few slices of yellow bell pepper and cherry tomatoes on top of field greens with a daub of sour cream.

404 calories of yum!

Hey peeps...

Ugh, I was hiding on weigh-in day. It's TOTM for me, as well, and I am seriously annoyed seeing my weight bounce around between 109 and 107. Rarrh. I'm also in the process of moving, so that's really stressful -- I'm moving to MA - making my first trip this Friday, and then I have to come back to finish the move -- insanity. I'm really excited, but at the same time really anxious and freaking out. *sigh*

Hey guys!!

Re: donating blood  -- I also can't donate as I have a blood disorder :( Nobody wants blood with kamikaze red blood cells. :P

OMG, though -- I am *so* proud of myself today. I ate ONE serving of the most amazing macaroni and cheese ever. One reasonable size serving -- go me! It wasn't easy, but it was so worth it. I also kept it to 2 beers -- which is good for me, lol!

I'm actually at around 1600 for the day - yay! Plus I went to combat and my burn meter says I burned a little over 2000.

Weight Loss Extremely Confused: Mayo Clinic/CC Differences Jul 22 2008
22:09 (UTC)

Hey there 'mom' ;)

I was having this exact frustration, the Mayo Clinic doesn't mention anything about net calories which seems to be such a big topic elsewhere in the weight-loss world.  For myself, I decided that because I am such a tiny person as well as someone with chronic anemia-- what works for a more average person is not going to work for me. (esp. since I am within a healthy BMI and just want to lose 5-10 lbs)

In the end, what the MC says is probably accurate if you want to lose 2lbs a week -- the thing is, it's hard to get in the right nutrients when you're eating that few calories... I'm only 5'0 and 107 lbs and I was miserable eating 1300-1400 calories. You may be better off doing what CC tells you... I know it's a cliche, but "listen to your body."

The other thing is that in the end, it's all estimates -- the calories you burn, the calories in food, it's all math and every body is different -- not to mention every "medium sized" apple. There's so much room for error when even the baseline formulas we depend on for BMI, etc, are all just general estimates.

This probably wasn't terribly helpful. I share your frustration. I think I will, once again, submit a related question to their "ask a specialist" section... *sigh*

Hey alwhite -- they don't sell the equipment and the dvd's except to gyms. Some unscrupulous instructors sell the DVDs they are given to learn the choreo on ebay. That is illegal, of course, and they are usually taken down. Because they are hard to come by the go for very high prices. You can also find torrents of many of the DVDs online - also illegal - but free. Of course, a BodyPump DVD isn't much good to you without the equipment. And of course, half of what makes the classes so great is the group environment and the live encouragement of the teacher and other participants!

Hey eveliina -- you're so right about the posers. We had a woman -- get this -- actually _answer her cell phone_ and try to keep lifting with it under her ear! #@$@!? Not only rude -- but just DUMB. She's probably in her mid to early fifties, wears a TON of makeup and bright colored walmart workout gear. It's kind of hilarious really.

I just got back from class, actually. I used 2kg for the lunches which was a great challenge -- but I dunno, I still find the biceps pretty challenging. They are slow for sure, so it is a break in that way - but I don't think I can up it and complete that many sets... I decided I def need to go up to 2kg/side for chest...

As for the new release... I think the new music is so cheesy! (On your way to the disco!) I kinda like it anyway, though. I do love the clean and press!

My BP Weights ---

  • warm up - 1 kg per side
  • squats - 2.5 kg per side
  • chest - 1 kg per side
  • back - 2 kg per side
  • triceps -1 kg per side
  • biceps - 1 kg per side (I might up this to 2)
  • lunges - 1 kg per side (same here...)
  • shoulders - 2lb free weights in each hand

I know I look like a wimp - but I'm really fatigued by the end of each set for just about every one one of these. I only weigh like 48.5 kg myself after all.
